The Promenade

4

- Concept A discussion of twenty-first century commons must address means to regain the public realm of the city from the automobile. The idea behind this project was to give more space back to the public while addressing the connection from Queen Street onto Quay Street. The Promenade, Agora and tower are a response to these conditions. The Agora: The sphere of private people come together as a public. The point of assembly. Natural place to gather. E.g. sunlight, wind and the microclimate. Mixed- Use Tower: In response to the politics and privatisation of the site surrounding a mixed-use of tower(Apartments, Offices and pools) connects down into the sculpted cultured landscape. The Promenade: A new connection slices through the topography connection a new animated route leading from Queen Street into Quay Street. The void formed from this promenade will act as a hybrid space that will allow for a variety of activities to unfold. (E.g. Performances, Seating areas, Sports, Events). The journey through the site will make the visitor experience expansion and compression as they traverse towards Quay Street and the waterfront. The sculpted landform created from the void in the promenade gives way for an urban space that will create park space encouraging Physical activities and beautification of the surrounding environment. The complex will serve as the anchor to a commercial node, an oasis for office workers and a playground for its residents.

Public vs. Private?

5

The ongoing discussion of Public vs. Private is a big issue regarding the Britomart Site which is partially owned by Precinct Properties and the Auckland Council. How much of this should be public? How much should be private? With the City Rail Link planned for commencement in 2020. My proposal is for the ‘promenade’ to be a generative green space that will be a strong public amenity and alter the economics of the area. A gift back for the area. To see all the unintended parts of the city at a different heights e.g. The Old Railway Station and Ferry Building.

Architect’s Promenade for date Downtown Mall Site

A reconfiguring of the Auckland Downtown Westfield site to acc for pedestrians could be the remedy that Auckland has been wait

This is what local Architect Taylor Chan is proposing: A diagonal ing spine’ that will run from Queen Street to Quay Street. Shared bra crossings, and larger pavements that will aim to reconnect th site and its people with Auckland City’s lost harbour.

“The lack of connection to the waterfront is a main driver for this signed public complex,” he states.

“Albert Park seems to be the best working public space in Auckla the downtown site it seems that public life only exists in leftover s are not accessible by car.”

This dynamic 24 hour promenade consists of retail, market stalls britomart square and apartments. The project aims at creating fle which will serve not just within peaktimes but be used in some w of the times. It is a 24hour complex designed to bring people into rather than cars.

With the addition of the City Rail link on the way. This project co other pivotal move in making Auckland a more inviting, pedestri city as an urban fabric needs public spaces and public transportat healthy society.

THE PROMENADE

Is Auckland ready for a 24 hour complex that could generate exce and unneeded drunkenness on the streets? Will the the narrowing of Quay Street and Albert Street for pedes add another dimension to Auckland City’s transport woes?

We will be yet to see if this project will be brilliant or just another Saga of Auckland City.

EXISTING CONNECTIONS

The Promenade

- The Block size on the Downtown Site is too big to promote pedestrian activity, e.g. from A(Queen Street to B (Quay Street).

0

- No opportunity for pedestrians to shortcut through the Downtown Site.
