Save the World Club Save the World Club (www.savetheworldclub.org) is a Kingston-based charity registered for 15 years. We have three volunteer trustees and rely on up to 20 active volunteers. What do we do and why? We actively prevent things from being unnecessarily wasted. We: • run activities to prevent items ending up in landfill or incineration; • We collect and redistribute food and goods to needy recipients to help improve the quality of their lives. We do this in two main ways by: 1. Community Mosaics • We collect waste ceramic tiles, mirrors and beads converting them into beautiful mosaic murals; • We have completed hundreds of metres of mosaics around Kingston Town, like the one in the subway as you walk to the left of Kingston Station; • We have worked with thousands of young people, the police, Network Rail, residents and businesses to design, create and install hundreds of metres of wall mosaics, brightening up areas and eliminating graffiti.

Helping to Improve the Mental and Emotional Health of Local Children with Cancer Bethan Jenkins

Children’s Mental Health Week 2019 runs from the 4th - 10th February. Momentum Children’s Charity, a Kingston-based organisation that has been supporting children with cancer and life-challenging conditions for 15 years, is spreading awareness on mental health among young cancer patients. of the music therapy sessions, “Harry absolutely loved music therapy. He had a huge smile on his face during every session. It was wonderful to witness.”

Bianca Effemey, Founder and CEO of Momentum Children’s Charity, says, “When a child is diagnosed with cancer or a life-challenging condition, they can often struggle to deal with the emotional and the physical changes that they find themselves suddenly dealing with. Sourcing support through a doctor or hospital can often take months. We recognised that there was a need for immediate access to a variety of therapy services for all the family.”

The charity has recognised, and recent research has shown, that mental health issues among children who have had cancer can appear years after treatment is complete. Momentum Children’s Charity ensures that they are there to offer support at every step, forever.

The charity’s therapy services programme includes music therapy, play therapy, art therapy, and access to a trained psychotherapist/counsellor. Harry, who was three years old when he was diagnosed with Leukaemia, really struggled emotionally during his treatment.

As part of their 15th anniversary appeal, Momentum Children’s Charity are aiming to raise £20,000 in 2019 for a trained psychotherapist/ counsellor. The objective is to enable more families to access their one-on-one counselling services in their own homes, helping to improve their mental and emotional health. The money raised through the appeal aims to increase the number of children, siblings and parents who benefit from a course of counselling by 30%.

Bianca explains, “He started to lack confidence without his mother there, often experiencing feelings of anger, whilst feeling frightened and upset. We arranged music therapy sessions, one batch during his treatment and a second batch of sessions when he started maintenance. The aim was to help him express his feelings and give him an opportunity to interact with someone else.

As we look back over our shoulders at 2018, a year of progress and success in terms of grants and impact on the community, we’d like to thank Omni Local and each of you readers for your support.

Love Kingston Small Grants 2019 Love Kingston is continuing last year’s theme of ‘From Isolation to Integration’; their 2019 Small Grants are to support local organisations working on intergenerational projects. Organisations can apply for up to £3,000 to fund a project/activities that make a difference to the lives of children or young people and older people living in the Royal Borough of Kingston. A new online application form and criteria will be available from Monday 4 February. The deadline for applications is Friday 1 March. Successful applicants will be notified in April. Around the borough you have raised funds and awareness for residents who are isolated and in doing so, helped fund charitable groups who work tirelessly in our communities to offer companionship, advocacy, food, social life, learning, and respite. Singing is a joyful experience and the Kingston Rotary Club wants to spread the opportunities for this to happen by fundraising through the Kingston’s Big Sing.

The proceeds of our Big Sing event in February 2018 funded a choir run by Sarah Clay at Staywell Raleigh House a joyous time being had by all who participate.

Kingston’s Big Sing will take place at All Saints Church, Kingston Market Place, Kingston upon Thames on 23rd February from 3.00 pm to 6.30 pm. It will be run by professional choir leaders, Ben Crawley; Sarah Clay; Mary Bourne and Jon Rattenbury, all with great experience of creating community choirs including, some that have performed for the Queen and Princes Harry, Charles and William. This year we are joining with The Big Sing Soul and funds raised will go to support Big Sing Soul: creating choirs in the community and Rotary Charities.

We haven’t quite reached that ‘spring splendour’ feel just yet, as those wintery days tend to linger into February (give or take) for most of the UK; however, mid-March is supposed to signify the move into Spring and things are about to change. The tough part is knowing what can be done and what will have to wait...Some areas are actually ideal for this time of year, no matter what the conditions, so why not get started here:

perennial plants that have been neglected until now to encourage faster growth and healthier, fuller blossoms when they start to bloom. It’s actually better to do it in the cooler months, and before they start to become unruly, and you should only keep the healthiest pieces.

Lawn preparation For those of you looking to start up a fresh new lawn, you can begin preparing the grounds now. In fact, Greenthumb specialises in those post-winter freshenups (see advert opposite), so get in touch if you’d like some help or advice. If alternatively, you’re looking to do it yourself, ensure that you’ve removed any weeds when digging the area you need. Keep the soil in clods and let nature take care of the rest.

Choosing your seeds/bulbs wisely Take a trip to your local garden centre if you can, speak with someone who knows what will fair well at this time of year. You can even take a walk or drive around your neighbourhood in order to see what inspires you, whether it be conifers, camelias or roses. Snowdrops, sweet peas, daffodils, tulips or crocuses are supposed to be ideal for winter/spring months. If your thing is planting produce however, you can sow beetroot, carrots, peas, cabbages and spring onions – or even tomatoes, cauliflowers and lettuces if you have a cover. It’s also possible to start early planting onions, potatoes and garlic.

Planting early Once you’ve removed any old leaves and debris from your chosen area (and assuming there’s no snow in the way) you can start your planting, as soil can retain some warmth even in the coldest of temperatures. You could start off new hedges or plant shrubs ready for the warmer seasons. Just be sure to do your research on more high-maintenance plants.

OS19 will be taking place on 8/9th and 15/16th June and is open to any artist or maker living or working in and around Kingston. Open Studios in Kingston is a collaborative public exhibition whereby local artists and makers open their own homes or studios to the public and exhibit their work. The Open Studio venues are organised into art trails in and around Kingston, featuring a wide range of 2D and 3D work – painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, glass, photography, digital art, textiles, paper art and mixed media. This is a perfect opportunity to meet local creators, see their work, talk to them about their techniques and inspirations and buy affordable art direct from the artist. The coming year in 2019 Many KAOS members’ exhibiting diaries are already beginning to fill up. In March, two of our artists are jointly showing in Kingston’s twin town Oldenburg in Germany, while another has been invited to show her work in Venice at the 2019 Biennale. We have various joint shows in Richmond in March, Cologne in April and Bermondsey in July. Our printmakers have shows on the South Bank and The Cornerhouse Community Centre in Tolworth, and one of our textile artists is involved with the Landmark Contemporary Textiles Fair. Café life is not immune to the influence of KAOS and many of our artists have their work on display on the walls of cafés in and around Kingston. Coconut Treats

COOKING CORNER

Method:

1. In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients together. 2. Place the mixture in the fridge to cool as it will be easier to handle. 3. Once cooled, divide the mixture into 10 equal parts and roll into little balls. 4. Use a little more desiccated coconut and cover the balls in the coconut by rolling them around. 5. Eat the coconut treats at room temperature, but store them in the fridge for best results.

start, remember that now isn’t the time to be serious. The holiday should be about following your heart and trying to make them smile, without being ashamed of looking silly or cheesy in any way. Put your most lovely-dovey, mushy-gushy self out there and they’ll know that your love for them has been put above anything else. This means you can get something that’s humorous, from a jokey greeting card to something a little more risqué or something sweet and simple like their favourite chocolates or an edible bouquet.

This year, whether you’re in a relationship or not – we hope you’ll be sharing in (albeit, one of the less important holidays) Valentine’s Day this year! Show your love for whoever, even if it’s just a good friend or a family member. There’s no rule that says you should be ‘courting’ whomever you buy that box of choccies or bouquet for.

Alternatively, you can show your really thoughtful side and create a photo album of your favourite photos together, cook their favourite meal, book a seat at the place you had your first date or purchase/craft some sort of keepsake relevant to your relationship like a personalised wall motif or throw pillow. If money is an issue, you could make your own (possibly heart-shaped) confectionery, create a memory book or fill a jar with little notes about why you love them - maybe even write them a poem or song if you’re the creative type. Just using the day as an excuse for something simpler and more entertaining will ensure that no one dreads the occasion and nobody gets left out. You’re simply doing it in your own way. After all, we don’t all have the exact same Christmas or pick the same location to celebrate a birthday.

Homemade baked goods or a scrapbook of your favourite mum moments is sure to get a smile.

Visiting your grandmother or stepmother Not all relationships run smoothly, and not everyone gets along with their stepmothers or has the chance to spend time with their grandparents; but hopefully you can take the opportunity to spend time together and share old stories, even if just for the duration of a cup of tea/coffee and a chat. Spending time with your ‘Mums Mum’ could help you feel closer to your mother as well while you reflect on the good old days, and maybe even look at old photos or create a scrapbook. This helps create a good support system for the both of you during such a sad event.

IN THE CINEMA LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part Following up on the fun, mayhem (and that earworm!) that came from the original LEGO movie, the sequel has arrived to bring, well, a whole lot more of the same! Five years on from where we left things, the ‘everything is awesome’ feel has slipped away slightly as the citizens now face the threat of invaders from space (in the form of LEGO DUPLO characters). The heroes of Bricksburg are back to save the city from these new visitors who are destroying more than the townspeople can create. The ever-plucky Emmet (voiced by ‘Jurassic World’ and ‘Passengers’ star, Chris Pratt), Lucy (Elizabeth Banks, known for her roles in ‘Pitch Perfect’ and ‘The Hunger Games’) and Batman (Will Arnett, ‘Arrested Development’ and ‘30 Rock’ favourite) must gather all of their other friends on their exploration of new and faraway worlds. This leads to various tests of their courage and skills, an array

of strange and brand new characters and some more catchy songs. The peppy feel and general hilarity is fun for the whole family.

The story follows a country singer named Jackson Maine (played by Bradley Cooper, famous for movies like ‘The Hangover’ and ‘Limitless’) who is struggling to fight a secret addiction to drugs and alcohol. He is supported by his older brother/ manager Bobby (Sam Elliott, known for his role in ‘Road House’ and the recent Netflix series, ‘The Ranch’). After a concert in California, Jackson meets a waitress/singer-songwriter at a local drag bar, named Ally (Lady Gaga), after being mesmerised by her performance. Just as she’s giving up on becoming a singer, he pulls her into the spotlight. The two go on tour together which leads to a more intimate relationship, however they face many ups and downs as he battles his own issues and her career begins to take off.

You need to visit a few times to enjoy the selection and their set menu changes weekly. Fish! also offer a variety of quality wines, liqueurs and soft drinks.

We were lucky enough to visit Fish! Kingston and were treated to a delicious – yes, you guessed it, fish meal! With their sister company Jarvis Fishmongers next door serving beautifully fresh fish since 1942 and Borough Market in Central London they certainly know how to find quality responsibly sourced fish and seafood, largely from England, Scotland and Ireland.

Not only a restaurant at the back, they have takeaways, deliveries and happy hour/s from 4 pm to 6 pm: Fish & Chips + beer/glass of wine £14.95. Open Tues – Sat 1200 – 2200. If you prefer al fresco, when warmer they have a terrace outside to enjoy.
