01 Parco della Salute A new city hospital and an urban development project | Turin, Italy
The project for the ”Parco della Salute” (health park) is located in an empty area, previously occupied by FIAT and provides the redevelopment of an industrialized area recognized as contaminated site by the Regional Register of Contaminated Sites (ASCO). The area is characterized by the presence of isolated architecturs of historical interest and also of recent construction. In the health park project three new functions are to be placed, which will divide the large area into different poles: hospital, university and residential; the first provides a new hospital to replace the current Molinette, the second a new university headquarters closely connected to the hospital and the last a residential complex for the Ferrovie dello Stato. The area is reconnected the surrounding urban fabric through new axes, which are attach to the park around the Palavela from one side and to the blocks beyond the railway from the other side, eliminating the urban barriers present. The hospital complex, is characterized by a particular horseshoe shape, constructed also in the underground levels with the aim of avoiding a massive construction on the park level. The entrance is through a gently sloping square, that leads to the main distribution axis: an “8” path shape on two hypogeal floors from which visitors and staff can access various departments. The hospital’s internal facades of the court differ from those facing the park due to the presence of entire glass surfaces shielded by packaged aluminum lamellae. Those overlooking the park, however, are characterized by the presence of a ventilated wall with regular windows, shielded by shielding blinds interspersed with large glass areas in accordance with the indoor common areas.

This first type of hospitalization is characterized by an opaque facade in which a large window is inserted, screened by an external shielding blinds. The bathroom is located near the corridor and has a wall system space that can be inspected from outside of the room; this allows easy inspection avoiding patient disturbance. The service area is equipped with a sink for the doctors and lockers for patients. The individual beds are surrounded by sliding curtains in order to make it easier to the doctors to check the individual patients.
The space is distributed in the same way as the previous type, but in this case the shielding orientation was analyzed in order to reduce glare and still maximizing the visual relationship between the room and the court taking the patients psychological comfort in consideration.

02 Locanda di Stupinigi Restoration and redevelopment of “Parco Naturale Stupinigi” | Stupinigi, Italy The “Locanda di Castelvecchio” restoration project is part of a redevelopment project for the area near Stupinigi’s Hunting Castle. As part of the development project, several buildings were chosen to have a process of restoration and reuse. The Locanda project was performed in several stages, the first stage included manual architectural relief using simple mediums, as well as architectural relief using aerial photographs and assembling them into a 3D model using Agisoft and CloudCompare softwares. The second stage included cataloging the types of defects, and the manner of handling them, in the external and internal parts of the building in order to prepare the necessary restoration plans. The third and final part included the Locanda renewal project for its reuse as an accessible guesthouse. During the project it was decided to dismantle all the additions and changes made on the building’s facades and to return the Locanda to its original and symmetrical shape. The new Locanda has various sized bedrooms, a small event room, an outdoor restaurant and bar. The project uses materials and additions that preserve the character of the historical Locanda.

03 Inside\ Outside The outside spaces of the Polytechnic’s main campus | Turin, Italy Barriers, boundaries and spaces without a common character are the elements that characterize the spaces inside the main campus of the “Politecnico di Torino” (La Cittadella Politecnica). Designing these spaces means giving new importance to what is currently the back of the Polytechnic and at the same time the most frequented entrance by students, mostly residing in adjacent neighborhoods. In the project of the new Citadel’s front, a vast indistinct pavement was designed in order to unify all the spaces and to expand the area of the Polytechnic outside the historic wall. By observing more closely the situation of Via Borsellino and Via Boggio, it was decided to break the existing monotony by creating three squares. The first is the current garden of Corso Menotti, the second is the entrance to the Citadel and the last is generated by the resulting spaces of the former Westinghouse and the back of the OGR. Fundamental to the project is the manifest by the italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto called “Terzo Paradiso”, the one generated by integrating the first paradise (the natural paradise) and the second paradise (the artificial one created by man). The First Paradise, characterized by the presence of tall pre-existing trees. The new design of the ground chosen for the square guarantees the coexistence and dialogue of the intimate spaces of the garden with the traveling spaces bordering the historic wall of the Citadel. The intimacy of the spaces is amplified by the elimination of vehicular traffic, the elimination of the difference in level between the road and sidewalks and the inclusion of an acoustic barrier capable of masking traffic noise. The square created between the OGR and the former Westinghouse becomes instead the Second Paradise, designed to be reachable thanks to the opening of the axis located between the OGR and the Citadel. This path, located between buildings of industrial past, best represents the artificial paradise created by man. The Third Paradise is the square at the entrance to the Citadel. The square was divided into three sections: two for pedestrians crossing and one for vehicles. A common outdoor furniture was designed for the pedestrian area, copying the soil design of the second paradise, it’s a new ways of staying, of socializing, introtucing a new quality standard of open spaces within the “Cittadella Politecnica”.

VIA BORSELLINO
VIA BOGGIO

04 Frammento Urbano A Residential building based on a modular structure | Turin, Italy The project was developed in an empty lot in Corso Regina Margherita using a predefined structure, which served has a repetitive modulr. The selected shape of the structure is the hexagonal. The shape selected has been chosen as it can be assembled in order to creat a supporting structure, with which it was possible to maximised the land use, and in addition made it possible to have a great planning flexibility. The chosen tetrahedron, 3 meters high, was used to creat a six floors residential building. The principal facade has the same proportions of the adjacent buildings but different from their basic geometries. The same structure has been used inside the court as a repetitive pattern from which were created pubblic spaces and also a structure dedicated to urban vegetable garden. The project was design using special paneling in x-lam for the opaque and glazed walls with appropriate shielding systems for the transparent parts.
