HIGH FIVE! FIVE YEARS O MY BAG
O My Bag has been my left, right and center the past 5 years and it’s unbelievable how quickly time flies when focusing on one thing. One thing that is all yours. One thing nobody can tell you how to do, because it has sprung from your mind. You built it up in your imagination, at the time when there was nothing to see. And I guess that is still the thing that amazes me every time I think about it. Where did I get the guts to start my own leather bag brand? It is kind of something too unrealistic to built your life around. I mean, a leather bag brand? When I was young I wanted to become a children’s author like Annie M.G. Schmidt or maybe an actress like Julia Roberts. Why would bags become the beginning and end of my universe? But they are, and this did happen and then some…

I relish in it, I love it and… it is a success! We make people happy with our bags. They are a convenience for people because now they have something pretty to hold their stuff together. And like our tagline says, it was never just your ordinary bag. The bags are a beautiful means to an even more beautiful end. The real deal is to make a positive difference in the world. Our positive difference is to provide successful trade relations in rising economies. For now, it has been India, where with our support trade not aid model, we contribute to a sustainable economy. Also, we do our best to be a good role model for other brands, show that it is possible to produce wisely, trying to lift other people up. Collaborating with organizations that are not run with the same kind of efficiency we are used to in the Netherlands. Making that happen while also designing and producing for a high-end segment and selling world wide, is a challenging undertaking. But it is a challenge we at O My Bag love getting out of bed for.
A third, not to be missed, thank you goes to all our producers in India. We give them the spotlight on page 7, find out who’s who and why we work with them specifically. The time may fly, but with laughter along the way, I hope to be on this O My Bag train with everybody for a long while to come. So that we can keep changing the leather industry by making it more sustainable, changing the fashion industry by investing in producing countries, changing people’s hearts and minds by bringing some good vibes to their life and impressing them with a leather carrier and the way we do business. And most importantly: enjoying life while doing all of that! Thank you for all your support, on to the next 5 years!

There is never a dull moment at the office, but I have a team around me that can hold their own. And that is the thing. It is the reason why I am able to pull all this off. I might be the one that started it, but I was never alone. This whole she-bang would have never become a reality without everybody that helped along the way. To look back on the past five years, means shining the light on everybody that had a role in making it happen. For one, my friend Eveline who persuaded me in 2010 to start our own business. All my dear friends who joined me on brainstorm evenings to think of the company name and names for the bags. My parents, who traveled with me to India in 2011, my dad as my ‘financial advisor’. Fleur, the first intern, who stayed for seven months! Betsy, my American friend, who became the first O My Bag
Another big component are the O My Bag customers! Our loyal fans stood by me when the first batches of Dirty Harry’s that were sold turned out to have faulty zippers. One in five broke! What else could we do but fix it and keep our sense of humor. Because of our initial production issues, we put a great deal of value on customer relations. A brand value very dear to us today. Check out the “Every Scratch Has a Story” on page 24, where a few O My Bag wearers share their love affair with their bag.

OUR PRODUCERS. It’s time to celebrate all the skills and talent of our O My Bagmakers! All O My Bags are handmade in India by a select group of producers in Kolkata in a safe and positive atmosphere where fair wages and benefits are paid, women are empowered and training and eduction are offered. We have a personal relationship with our team in India and we would love for you to learn more about them!
I. The leather industry is an employment intensive sector, providing jobs to approximately 2.5 million people in India, mostly from the weaker sections of the society. As working with leather involves a lot of physically demanding labor, men are often responsible for cutting and sewing the leather. However, women are crucial when it comes to work that requires precision and detail, such as painting edges or packaging. Also, four out of five producers we work with have woman in key management roles.

He and his wife Veronica are the owners of the Sheong Shi Tannery in Kolkata. We’ve been working together with them for almost 5 years now. Patrick and Veronica are very passionate about sustainability. For example, Patrick has built a water reservoir to collect rainwater during monsoon season and to minimize energy consumption, the building is built in a U-shape to catch as much daylight as possible.
II. In India chai tea is served to welcome guests into their home. Almost every visit starts with a cup of chai and some biscuits. At the Loyal Workshop chai is a daily ritual. At 4 p.m the ladies take a break and sit together to chat with a cup of tea. Kakali’s chai is the most popular. Want to taste this tea? Hop over to page 26 for her recipe!
VI. These lovely ladies work at the Crescent Factory. Crescent is a family-owned business employing 250 people. All employees are entitled to health and accident insurance. Also, women are entitled to maternity leave and benefits.
III. This picture was taken in 2011 upon Paulien’s very first arrival to EMA (Equitable Marketing Association). “I was so pleasantly surprised by the beautiful surroundings and the warm welcome. At that point I had visited over twenty producers and this was the first time I saw so many smiling women, and also the person leading the organization was a woman! I instantly knew that this was the place O My Bags should be made” - Paulien Wesselink.
VII. Sushanta - a father of two - started his career at EMA ‘on the floor’. Nowadays he is leading the production department (+100 employees!). He is a perfectionist and a very hard worker. His biggest dreams are to provide the best possible education for his children ánd to visit the Netherlands. We can’t wait to have him over! VIII. Mister Misra is our quality-checker in India. He’s been with us since 2014 and is in contact with our Product Manager Jessica on a daily basis. What he loves most about our bags is that they all have ‘with love from India’ in the label. “O My Bag always gives credit and recognition to the manufacturing country and I really appreciate this” - Dilip Misra.
IV. Swapna Das is the general manager of EMA Factory. EMA was the first to produce for O My Bag. “I share a very special relationship with O My Bag, since I have been involved with it right from its inception. In fact the first set of bags was made by us at EMA. I always felt that both of us planted a tree and then with time others also joined and made the plant grow faster and more healthy. Now the O My Bag plant is flowering. O My Bag’s direct involvement with the producers at EMA, especially Paulien Wesselink’s infectious enthusiasm and compassionate approach while working with our leather artisans, has been a very positive contributor to the work environment. Our artisans love her and are always eager
IX. Meet Krishna Naskar! This cheerful lady is a single mom. Her mission is to give her son the best education possible! Her job at EMA gives her the opportunity to pay for his education. When Krishna started working at EMA, she took part in a 6 month training program and is now a permanent employee with excellent (leather) painting skills. 7

O My Bag starts working with Sasha. Their goal is to provide an ‘umbrella’ organization which can acquire big clients and then break down the orders among small producers who could, otherwise, not support themselves on their own.

O My Bag is inseparably linked to India. It is a great source of inspiration for the brand and all production takes place in this country. The FW 16/17 collection originates from ‘The Blue City’, Jodphur, but with a Western twist. The houses in this historically-rich country are painted in wonderful blue colors, creating a striking contrast with the sober landscape of the Thar desert. “We strived to combine several elements of the Indian culture - such as decorative ornaments and colors - and translate these to a modern, minimalistic design”, explains owner and Head of Design Paulien Wesselink.

Over the last 5 years many people helped us out with making O My Bag what it is today. All our lovely and talented interns, employees, photographers, retailers, models and make-up artists. Who are the people that shaped us into who we are today? We have interviewed a few. I. WHO Tomek Dersu Aaron Whitfield, photographer of the Afriek X O My Bag campaign, the 2016 social media campaign and our AW 2016 campaign. He’s excentric, fun to work with and always just a phone call away to share his photography skills with us. FAVORITE O MY BAG “I’m one with my Mau’s Backpack in Black.” FUTURE OF O MY BAG “I’m always excited to work with O My Bag and I’m looking forward to making many more beautiful images together, a campaign in India for example! I hope their company grows in a healthy and good way, never forgetting their core phylosophies of creating products that are good for people and the enviroment. I hope that every country will have an O My Bag retailer at some point and that O My Bag keeps contributing to a world where products are made with respect for the environment and the people who make them.” VI. At the office we are always excited when she arrives bringing her fancy mirror with lights and suitcases packed with her tools. VIII. WHO Vera de Ruijter was also one of O My Bag’s first employees. “Together with Paulien I went to India to design the new collection. For me this was a life changing experience. The creative freedom I got was fantastic! I really got a chance to experience how it is to run your own business. Now I have my own company with employees and I always try to give them as much freedom as possible.” FAVORITE O MY BAG “The Frankie Fierce is still my favorite. It has a perfect size which is suitable for every occasion.” FUTURE OF O MY BAG “I think that O My Bag is a leading brand which is always in for the next adventure. I imagine them expanding into a lifestyle brand with besides bags also leather interior accessories.”

WHO Betsy Kordsmeier was one of the first employees. “When I first joined Paulien in March 2012, the OMB office was tucked in the back of a friend’s antique furniture shop on the Marnixstraat where we worked on building the company’s administration, sales, and clientele. Within a few short months, we outgrew that charming little corner 23

Our eco-friendly leather ages beautifully, becoming richer and prettier with use. An O My Bag will pick up indicators like marks, nicks, scratches, and shine. Color might naturally change and the leather may soften. These signs of wear are the best part in our opinion. They contain all your adventures and your life’s stories. We asked a few fans to show off their used pieces and share a bit about the love they have with their O My Bag.
I. I AM Stephanie Abidi from Vienna MY O MY BAG IS a Fly Violet and she’s a true survivor! It was a birthday present and I was over the moon with it! My happiness was rudely disturbed when Fly Violet got stolen at a supermarket. Unbelievingly, the following night, a family of four stood in front of my window with my beloved Fly. They found it in a small river next to a playground, with all my important documents still inside. This bag and I truly belong together. II. I AM Bram Agoston from Amsterdam MY O MY BAG IS a Dirty Harry. It was eye candy when I bought it and became even prettier over the last 5 years. Look at that leather! It aged and relaxed beautifully. And so did I along with it ;) 24

But after 4 years of festivals and nights out, her beauty really only came out even more! IV. I AM Emilie Wesselink from Madrid MY O MY BAG IS a Georgie’s Wallet and is about one year old. I used to have a big Miss Moneypenny, but now I’m really happy with this small wallet. It can fit all my cards, coins and bills so it has all the necessary needs, only wrapped in a cuter package. V. I AM Jorran de Wit from Amsterdam MY O MY BAG IS a Harvey and it’s one year old. I have had passers by spontaneously compliment me on my bag. Another funny thing about having an O My Bag is that fellow O My Bag owners tend to greet each other as a sign of recognition. VI. I AM Loes van der Weerd from Amsterdam MY O MY BAG IS a Frankie Fierce! I have had it since December 2011. I saw the bag in an article in NRC Next about Paulien and how she started the company. It’s the ideal bag; tough, feminine and a bit different, exactly how I would describe myself. I can’t believe that now, 5 years later, I’m doing my dream internship here. : ) VII. I AM Annejet Buiten from Amsterdam MY O MY BAG IS my sportsbag, my businessbag, my travelbag, my grocerybag, my shopping bag, my violet, my favorite bag! What I love the most about her? She’s lopsided, her right side always falls down. VIII. I AM Ernst-Jan Bos from Amsterdam MY O MY BAG IS three years old, I believe. This cardholder was a gift and it fits in every pocket. It used to be camel colored , but because I used it so intensively it is much darker now. Oh, and it is the only wallet I have never lost! 25

INGREDIENTS • • •
Tea time! Everybody at The Loyal Workshop knows that Kakali’s chai is the best! When O My Bag visited the workshop a few months ago we were lucky enough to join the tea party and taste it ourselves. It was so delicious that we asked Kakali for her recipe and she was nice enough to share it with us...

Milk (2 cups) Water (2 cups) Sugar, preferably palmsugar. About 4 tablespoons if you like it the way The Loyal Workshop has it, which is pretty sweet! Fresh Ginger (thumb sized piece) Chopped, then crushed in mortar & pestle Tea powder (2-3 heaped teaspoons) Tea powder is the best, but if you can’t find this, loose tea leaves will do.
METHOD 1. Pour the water and milk into a saucepan over high heat. 2. Add ginger and sugar and stir. 3. When the sugar has dissolved and begins to foam, add tea and take off heat for 30 seconds. 4. Place back on heat. When mixture foams again, lift from heat and allow to settle, then stir. Return to heat, and repeat 2-3 times. 5. Strain mixture through a sieve. 6. Pour into small cups and enjoy with friends.
