On a Full Bloom Let the sweet smell of thy messenger speak of the fragrance of your undying love…

V

alentine’s day is just around the corner, and there is nothing quite as timeless a choice as accompanying a gift for your loved one, with a bunch of pretty flowers. And if a trip to the florists drives you crazy with choice, then consider picking flowers that suit your Valentine’s zodiac sign. If you believe in the mystical connection between astrology and the flower power – that different flowers typically please people born under a certain zodiac sign – or well, want a change from the ‘three red roses’ formula, then look up the flower that might best suit your loved one’s zodiac sign…

ARIES

LEO

LIBRA

SAGITTARIUS

Love Bloom: Tiger Lilies

Love Bloom: Sunflower

Birth Flower: Daisy

Love Bloom: Carnations

Ariens are quick-witted and fiery. They will fight for what they believe in, are also quick to forgive and are large-hearted. The sharp lines and rich, red colour of tiger lilies best complement their personality. Geraniums and honeysuckle are also suitable.

Loud, lively and warmhearted, the Leo woman is constantly in search of the sun. The Leo woman might be extravagant and can entertain guests in style – she won’t think twice about doling out extra cash for champagne and caviar for a party at home, but will genuinely appreciate a simple bouquet of hand-picked sunflowers too. Dahlias, marigolds and passion

Their philosophy is really about ‘just being’ and Librans truly believe in fair play and justice; for Librans, life and love are meant to be sweet, carefree and simple without undue complications. That’s why the daisy best represents their spirit. Hydrangeas and mint leaves are also suitable.

Fun-loving archers, Sagittarians are true champions of free spirit and peace. They might be playful in love, but when they have found ‘the one’ they stick with them through thick and thin. Delightful companions, the carnation represents their love personality. Dandelions and peonies are also suitable

TAURUS Love Bloom: Rose Taureans are born with a strong appreciation for earthy and sensual colours and smell – you can find them perk up to the smell of freshly baked cookies, or show an inherent appreciation for sophisticated fragrances. The rose strikes favour among almost anyone, but for the Taurean, the fragrant flower will surely hit home. Poppies, foxgloves and violets are also suitable.

CAPRICORN Love Bloom: Pansies Most born under this sign, usually believe in undying love, and are capable of nurturing relationships that last decades. A small bouquet of fresh pansies you picked on your way back from work will get you in her good books. Ivy and jasmine are also suitable.

AQUARIUS Love Bloom: Birds of Paradise

GEMINI Love Bloom: Orchid

Aquarians stand out in a crowd: there’s rarely one you will find, who doesn’t love quirky jewellery, fancy custom-made clothes or has an unusual perspective on just about anything. Most Aquarians want love on their own terms. The attractive bird of paradise best suits their unique personality. Orchids and gladiolus are also suitable.

Chatty and inquisitive, there’s rarely a Gemini woman who isn’t the life of a party, and dressed in style. A bouquet of exotic orchids will leave her delighted. Lavender, lilies of the valley and chrysanthemums are also suitable.

CANCER Love Bloom: Lotus Cancerians are truly one of a kind: most born under this sign have a quirky sense of humour and love, often taking the notso-beaten track. Surprise her with an unconventional choice of flowers – fill a shallow container with fresh pink lotuses. You can also have the container custompainted or decorated. Magnolia, geraniums and lilies are also suitable.

flowers are also suitable.

VIRGO Birth Flower: Chrysanthemum The Virgo’s obsession with perfection is a legend, and they do love order and detail. Virgos usually show an eye for detail – intricate designs on clothes, and even weirdly patterned leaves and flowers. Delicate chrysanthemums are sure to strike their fancy. Buttercups and pansies are also suitable.

PISCES Love Bloom: Lilies

SCORPIO Love Bloom: Venus Fly Trap Scorpions are intuitive and forthright. If they find someone unworthy of their love, they will turn the page and never look back, and when they find a love that matches theirs in passion, they will love you with all their heart: the Venus Flytrap best describes their outlook on love. Hibiscus, rhodendrons and geraniums are also suitable.

Pisceans are perceptive and empathetic by nature. They love old-fashioned romance and subtle declarations of love – a bouquet of delicate and soft fragrant lilies along with a thoughtful gift and a dinner for two at a quiet expensive restaurant that serves their favourite cuisine, and you’re all set. Narcissus and jasmine are also suitable.

On a Mission, When I mean you complete me, there has never been a truer statement!

I

t’s Valentine’s Day, so we take you into the beautiful life of a couple in Chennai, who complement each other’s passions well and have made it work for their business as well. Ashvin Rajagopalan started Ashvita art gallery and Ashvita café owing to his love for art, and once he married Sruti, the duo ventured into jewellery designing and now they have converted Ashvita café into Ashvita fine dining restaurant. They tell us the secret of their shared passions, read on.... He and she I, Ashvin, am the son of doctor parents and have always had a fascination for art. I graduated from Pratt Institute, New York, with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree. Sruti is a Visual Communications Graduate from MOP Vaishnav College. Sruti was a runner-up in Miss Chennai 2002 and this started her off in the modelling world. Since then Sruti has been in over 100 Ads (both Print and Commercials). As she knows what it is to be in front of the camera, she decided to try her hand behind the camera as well. She has worked as an assistant director with Actor/Director Revathy and is currently working with Vikram K Kumar, whom she assisted in the film, 13B/ Yaavarum Nalam. Neither of us has taken on our family businesses/careers. Yet, we have the entire support of our families in our career choices.

Art and ‘us’ We understood each other through our common interests in art, music and films. We were able to understand each other’s ideas and create things together. Making of Ashvita After finishing college, I had always planned of coming back to Chennai and starting a career here. As a person with a fine art background, I decided to start an Art Gallery. Over the years, we shared our passion for the arts, food and creativity and have developed Ashvita into what it is today. Creating jewellery We share a passion to create/design. Jewellery is something that intrigues us both and is an area with unlimited design potential. It also makes for a good business model. We shop for all components together , sit and design the pieces together. In fact everything designed by us is a joint effort after mutual consultation and sharing of ideas. Ashvita cafe to Ashvita fine dining restaurant It was recession that inspired the change! We have always wanted to bring more people to Ashvita. We are big foodies. So this was a perfect opportunity for us to do both. The restaurant serves platters- both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. We have chat platters, momo platters, Indian

platters and a lot more. Each platter is a complete meal in itself and comes with a dessert as well. We decided to come up with a different concept of dining and convert the café into a fine dining restaurant. Romancing the platter Two things stand out in our restaurant. First, it is the quality of the food and the unlimited platter format in which it is served and secondly, the unique natural ambience with old trees and a running water body that we have preserved.

Together, we can! Being a couple is what has helped us become what we are today. It is very important to be able to sit down at the end of the day and realise that what we do is a lot of fun and that when we work we get to spend more time with each other. - Shivani Arora

T

heirs seems like the ultimate love story with all the ingredients of friendship, romance, courtship and a happy marriage thrown in. Actor Jiiva spills his heart out to us on Valentine’s day revealing what love and marriage to his childhood sweetheart Supriya means to him… Tell us about your love story and how marriage happened? Supriya and I studied together from the sixth standard at Adarsh Senior Secondary school in Chennai. We were just a part of a big gang of friends. Later, her dad got transferred to Oklahoma but we kept in touch. It was when she went away I realised that she meant a little more to me than the others. When we used to chat over the phone, we realised that there was something more than friendship between us. By the time she came back to India I knew she was the one for me and finally we got married two years ago! What are the things you like about her? She is a great decision maker and really mulls over anything before giving her opinion. I have come to rely a lot on her and we take joint decisions. She is someone I can depend on. She is currently taking care of my wardrobe, now that I am doing films that need stylish costumes.

What’s your idea of romance? Romance to me is being alone with Supriya, spending time talking, taking a walk or even a drive. Even when we went on a family holiday to the US or London, I would steal some hours away from everyone just to be with her and go shopping or just walking in the streets. One romantic getaway we had recently was a cruise to Phuket. In Chennai, we go on long drives on the ECR or catch a meal or a movie together. How would you describe love and marriage in a nutshell? Love is about understanding each other. Love to me means never tiring of her company. She is like my shadow. We complete each other. It’s just that she is more expressive than I am! She is really my better half! ( laughs) - Rinku Gupta

What is the best gift you have given her and she to you? Last Valentine’s day, I gave her a teddy and a card and that really made her entire day if not the year because it was so unexpected! It may not be worth much but I know she values the sentiments behind it. She is the one who has given me countless gifts and I cherish all of them. But this Valentine’s day, I plan to do something big and special for her.

LOVE Matters Our ideal haunts in Chennai: We love rooftop restaurants like Pergola, Aqua, Crown. Also Taj Coramandel, Basera, Kipling Café, Mocha, Tiscana. When I have to gift her something, I head to: Globus, Lifestyle, Landmark, Chennai Citi Centre. We love to catch movies at : Sathyam cinemas, Inox.

6

Supriya & Jiiva

Our ideal weekend getaway : Taj Fisherman’s Cove. Favourite shopping destinations: Singapore, Sri Lanka, Delhi Gifts from Supriya that I cherish: A 36” white shirt she gave him 8 years ago, a Buddha statue, some paintings, a mobile phone and a paperweight.

Music to the ears Nokia X6 – Has it got what it takes?

W

hen it comes to mobile phones, Nokia is surely a mass hero. Every model of the Finn brand is designed with mass appeal to satisfy the needs of a buyer. And with its wide range, Nokia is the foremost choice of the public. So when it introduces first of its mobile with a capacitive touchscreen, expectations are high. Does

it stand to its part? Well, yes and no. Yes, on the hardware design and no on their software. Opening the box, we have the regular parts – charger, micro USB cable, CD pack, a booklet with the key to enable ‘Comes with Music’ service and user guide. Plus the special one – WH-500 headset. The stereo headphones are surely a delight when compared to the regular headphones Nokia has been shipping. The construction of the X6 is nice with an opaque plastic finish, immune to fingerprints. But we would have surely liked some amount of metal fused in, if not for the looks but at least for the high price tag. The Call, Menu and End keys are neatly placed below the display. While the top is quite crowded with four keys – power key, 3.5mm audio jack, charger plug and micro USB slot, the bottom of the X6 is bare with just the microphone pinhole. The right side features the volume rocker, the camera key and screen lock slider, and the stereo speakers and slim card slot sit on the left side. Hotswap functionality is a strict no as you have to restart the mobile for the card to work. In the back, the 5-megapixel

camera is partnered with dual LED setup. The 3.2” 16M-colour touchscreen display occupies most of the front. Well, that’s the whole idea. Response to the touch is quick and requires only a gentle stroke, thanks to the capacitive technology. The HVGA screen is a little disappointment when WVGAs are making the waves currently. And bad sunlight legibility doesn’t help either. Available almost throughout the interface, the kinetic scrolling works really well. The finger scrolling has undergone a lot of improvement which is evident. Most of the UI is as we have seen on other S60 devices and holds no surprise anywhere. There are no changes in the home screen, it is the same as the Nokia 5530. Messaging and emailing is at its ease. A standard alphanumeric keypad is offered for writing, or thanks to the accelerometer, a full QWERTY keyboard comes in when the handset is tilted. The email client makes the set-up of the accounts sweat-free, as it automatically downloads the settings required. The music player is the same that we see in 5800 XpressMusic and needs some tweaking to make it interesting. The Playlist DJ is a new addition though. Joy, Passion, Anger and Tempo – just set your mood and adjust the sliders to your desire and the DJ creates a playlist. The Music Store app in X6 comes with one year free subscription. So download unlimitedly with

the ‘Comes With Music’ subscription, the 32GB internal memory adding further to the mileage. The FM player interface is simple and goes easy on the eye. The audio quality is typical of other XpressMusic editions – Excellent. The 5 MP camera of the X6 offers decent images with Carl Zeiss optics detailing. Though settings like manual white balance, ISO, contrast and sharpness are present, X6 lacks features like face detection and smile detection which act as default options in other brands. The balance between the detailing and the noise level works well providing photos of good colours and contrast. The video quality is fine but VGA at 30 frames per second is not much to expect more. We all can agree on the fact that the S60 web browser has not utilised the touchscreen for its worth. Be it usability or user-friendliness, it has to go a long way before even think to compete with the likes of iPhone. Sure the improvisation is there, but let’s give it some time to get perfect. X6 comes with 3 preloaded games – Spore, Asphalt 4: Elite Racing, DJ Hero. Nokia X6 is, as already said, more of a hardware update than of the software. The capacitive touchscreen is great, but is paired with poor configuration. Though the internal memory of 32GB poses big for X6, the performance gives scope for loads of improvement. When it comes to India, Nokia X6 is sure to pull the crowd with its brand image and styling. - Balasubramaniam N

Store To get more apps, games, audio and video downloads for your Nokia mobile, visit Nokia’s Ovi Store at store.ovi.com. With a simple user-friendly structure, it gives you a description of each app when selected. If you can’t find what you are looking for in Recommended section or the Related apps section, searching the store is easy. And if you can’t find it even then, go Google; there are several other sites for software downloads for the Symbian.

You are the Song in my Hear

A half smile, an act of indifference, a nervous laughter, why is it so hard to just tell it to yo

T

he sign

Falling in love hurts like hell, yes; you ought to ‘fall’ in love. Suddenly, your senses will disobey you. Having waited for half an hour, it is just a sheepish grin that comes to welcome your loved one. Oh, where did all the fuming go? And yes, when they mention another person’s name (probably just a friend or acquaintance), you start praying that they should be either ugly or gay. Even in a crowded 29 c bus, all you can see is how beautiful your love is. And in the middle of night, you get up with a smile on your face, pick up the mobile, key in their number, and then just wonder whether they would be thinking of you. You look at the moon and feel lucky that you both share the same sky. Oh, you’ll laugh at every single joke they crack (sometimes, even before they finish it). If you show any or all of the above symptoms, then your worst nightmare has come true, you have fallen in love. You will never be you again!

Those three words What’s worse than falling in love? It’s telling it to your beloved! What if she/ he says no or worse, what if they just burst laughing? We know it’s difficult but you got to tell them how they have disrupted your peaceful life. Here are some ways that men (sometimes a daring lady) have tried to woo their love. Read it for inspiration and then just do it your way. As the waves sing along There is something about the sea that causes even the most unromantic person to dream. There are lot of beautiful beaches along the ECR stretch, all you need to do is befriend some fishermen, they’ll take you to the sea in a traditional catamaram for around Rs.150, you can propose to her even as the waves blush beside you. For those heavy pockets, Taj Fisherman’s Cove too offers such catamaram rides, you can probably try this after a romantic evening at Taj. But try this adventure, only if one or both of you know swimming. Else just hit the beach, sit close to the waves and say those words on a starlit evening. The light of my life We cannot always guarantee a moon light, so, go in for the candle light instead. Nothing can lift the spirits, like good food and music. You

8

can opt for the rooftop romance at Crown, Residency Towers or try the beautifully lit Asvita in Mylapore (please check out the little pathway from the restaurant to the gate). The Farm House on the ECR stretch is another lovely place to declare your love. Propose to her after the dinner, kneel down like a man and ask her to be yours. It is difficult to say no when true love comes calling. Divine love If your beloved believes that God has got to have a say in life, prove that even love is conspired in heaven. Take her to the Nithyakalyanaperumal temple near Muttukadu and ask her to share your life. This Deity is believed to be auspicious for marriages. And soon Chennai will even have a Valentine’s Sri Krishna temple at Sholinghur ( around 90 km from Chennai). Who else to concede for you, than Lord Krishna himself? You can then start your life together with the blessings of the Lord. Love is an adventure If she is somebody who loves to have lot of fun, take her on a trip with Wild Tribe, Chennai. Or just spend a day in a theme park like MGM, Queen’s land etc. Probably, when she is holding on to you for dear life (when your ride stops at some 200 m above ground level), tell her that you’ll be there to protect her throughout her life.

Happily

rt!

ou? It’s romantic anyway, anywhere! One of my colleagues was just talking to a friend of his, suddenly, he realised he was in love with her. He disconnected the call telling that there was something important that he should do. Took permission from office, took a flight to her city (yeah, right!), bought some flowers on the way and went to her office, called her up, asked her to step out for a minute and then knelt on his knee and proposed to her. Did she say no? Of course not! You can bring in the romance, just about anywhere. Take her out for a romantic movie, and sing a long the romantic song that comes in the movie (get the words right) and tell her the way she changed your life. Take her on a long ride and propose to her in the middle of nowhere. So, what are you waiting for, there are ways aplenty to sweep her off her feet, take some courage, find the right moment and tell it to her. - Catherine Gilon

ever a fte r

You have loved her/ him like mad, got married, had children, now life is all about work and children. So, did you just let your romance die in the process? Valentine’s day might just be an excuse to bring back the love of your life. - Make her feel special on that day, leave children at your parent’s place and take her out for a romantic dinner or movie. - You can gift her a lovely chocolate massage at a spa like Oryza or get a box of chocolate sauce from www.straightline.in, it also has a brush to design with. - Take those old pictures of you two together and put it up in an handmade album ( try Aurovile shops) and present it to her or frame one of those lovely moments and surprise her. - Make a year’s collection of ‘ how you made me happy today’ and present it to her in a bowl or box on Valentine’s day - Get her different expressions shot candidly and emboss it on a wooden frame or gift her a pretty mirror (Misuri Sana has a good collection) and tell her how she’s grown beautiful every year (yeah, she’ll believe it). - Now, stop looking out for more ideas, go and make your loved one feel special. Happy Valentine ’s Day!

Sweet somethings! Here are few romantic tips to fill in your senses this Valentine’s day - See a movie at Zha Café, Adyar. You can book their conference room and watch a romantic movie with some good food. It’ll be a good place to spend some quality time together

- Gift her the rain, yes, you heard it right. Get her a rain stick from D’ Hut in the ECR stretch and see her smile as she hears the rain falling through. - Get a taste of some real chocolate at Sandys, R. A. puram. Chocolate and love do make a lethal pair. - Nothing smells sweeter than a love; gift him a perfume that says so. - Hold each other’s hand and go walking on a long stretch (no, not in afternoons!), you might discover some new places to hangout (just make sure you don’t have any sneaky relatives around).

A Date with Disaster? You might want to keep some fashion disaster alerts in mind, to have your V-Day remain etched in memory for all the right reasons.

10

s your preparations and expectations for Valentine’ Day build up, you might either go overboard getting your looks and your wardrobe right or might even completely neglect it! History has it that dates can go absolutely wrong due to fashion disasters and wardrobe malfunctions. Don’t believe us? Just try searching the net and find out how many people have written about great dates gone awry due to fashion disasters. Here are our absolute no-nos for the coming V-Day!

and t-shirts are supposed to fit you and not you plus your best friend. Stop looking like you are Eminem’s clone or younger brother. If you are actually a rapper or a ghetto gangster, then the look is so becoming of you! Accessorise right

Bags, clutches, earrings, bandannas, shoes, anklets, toe rings, cocktail rings, watches, cuff links and more. We all probably own them all, but that doesn’t mean that we need to showcase them all on our date. Accessories complete the look, but do not make your look all about the million different accessories you own!

Between Black And White Yes, between black and white there are tons of shades of grey and outside of these two shades, there is a whole spectrum of colours. As much as we do appreciate that black and white are classic shades that complement most skin tones, don’t end up looking like you are in mourning when you walk into a date. The chances of things turning morbid are especially high if you carry flowers! Another risk factor is that you might end up looking like the service staff at the restaurants. Red Riding Hood Yes, yes, yes, it is the season for red and all that, but that doesn’t mean you need to look like a V-Day decoration. Avoid going overboard with this intense colour and avoid ending up looking like an oversized heart or red balloon. Your date will also be mighty glad for showing mercy on their eyes! So red belts, bags, shoes, scarves, jewellery, lipstick and more are great if not worn all together on the same day! Cartoon Prints Unless you are a teenager on a date, please steer clear of cartoon prints. We are already pretty peeved with our Bollywood men for even assuming that cartoon prints bring out their once existent cute machismo. Save your cartoon prints for mommy’s eyes or for bedtime, period.

A

Get the place right!

Hair Scare We guess by now men would have learnt that long hair and afros require regular upkeep. The adverse effects of bad hair hygiene include flies getting attracted to your head, birds mistaking it for nest, your date ending up either puking, fainting or screaming out of fright. Likewise ladies, the above holds good even for you. While naturally straight hair looks great, don’t get too excited with your straightening iron lest you end up with ultra flat or burnt hair.

Cartoonist: Arun Of Shoes and Boots We still live in Chennai and yes, it is still smoking hot throughout the year so why does one need to wear knee high boots or UGG to prove that they are following international fashion trends? Also keep in mind the length and type of date you are on. Especially V-Day falling on a Sunday this time means that you might be on a day long date, so avoid sky high heels.

Rip Vann Wrinkle!

Yo Gangster!

While on the topic of irons, there are a few things that do require straightening like your clothes. Especially the menfolk of this city seem to be under the misconception that women dig rugged looks. Yes, women dig rugged cowboy look sans the wrinkly clothes, they make one look shabby instead of cool. Ever heard of wrinkle-free clothes or the good old iron box?

The gangster look or the rapper look when you know you clearly aren’t one. We don’t want to know the brand of underwear you are using, so why don’t you men pull up those jeans to where they belong. Shirts

We repeat- “Get the place right.” Knowing where you are going is half the battle won. Picture this, a woman turning up looking like she’s dressed for the Oscars red carpet when it is a movie date or a guy ending up looking like he jumped off a rock concert for a romantic fancy dinner. We know a lot of you will plan surprise dates for V-Day but at least tell your partner what to wear, you will save yourself, your partner and your date from an impending fashion disaster! My Name is Love! A sip of chocolate, a dip of honey, let’s brew a love potion to stir up some magic.

A

ll through the ages, love potions have found their way into almost every mystical and magical story where they have created as much mischief and mayhem as they have happy endings. People have always believed that a love potion will help make someone fall in love with them, and the secrets of these ancient brews have been passed down over the centuries. The ancient Greeks called it a Philtre, and probably used the magical herb Dittany as the main magical ingredient in their love potions. A love potion usually has three important elements. An element that constitutes the powerful ‘Magic’. The ‘Magic’ of the potion has to be consumed and this is usually in the form of a brew. A special incantation/ spell to invoke the Magic of the love potion.

A Lemony Love Potion

If the love potion is created with the best of intentions, mixed and drunk at the right time, with or without magic ingredients, it should work. Remember that any love potion must be made with love, from healthy and natural ingredients, and must most importantly be yummy! Colour can also play an important role in the effectiveness of a love potion, so red ingredients will work well and be more effective.

Ingredients - A bottle of lemonade concentrate - 1 cup raspberry sherbet - One bottle of lemon/lime soda (or 7-Up can be used)

The following are a few delicious brews that are rather light on the spells and strange ingredients, but heavy on colour and taste.

Directions for the spell - In a pitcher, mix the lemonade concentrate with the recommended amount of water. - In a separate pitcher, combine the sherbet with 1 cup of the lemonade mixture. - Add the soda, stir, and serve.

Cupid’s Punch

A Love Potion Tea

Ingredients - Orange juice concentrate - Lemonade concentrate - Chilled pineapple juice - Chilled cranberry juice - Ginger ale - Club soda - 2 cups of fresh sliced strawberries

Ingredients

Directions for the spell In a large bowl, mix the orange juice and lemonade concentrates, pineapple juice, cranberry juice, ginger ale and club soda; stir to combine well. Add sliced strawberries on top of each individual cup while serving.

- A pinch of rosemary - 2 teaspoons of black tea - 3 pinches thyme - 3 pinches nutmeg - Fresh mint leaves - Fresh rose petals - Few lemon leaves - 3 cups of pure water - Sugar & Honey

Directions for the spell To make your sweetheart fall in love with you, brew this tea on a weekend or on a full moon day. Place all ingredients in an earthenware or copper tea kettle. Sweeten it with sugar and honey, if desired.

The Scent of Strawberries Ingredients - The juice of one lemon - Sugar - 10 fresh strawberries - 1 cup of water

Directions for the spell Mix the lemon juice, sugar, strawberries, and water using a blender and mix until it becomes smooth and pink. Serve over ice. If you are a bad cook, it would be a good idea to just go out to a nearby café and gobble up an unmagical potion of chocolate. For all we know, these potions could just be an excuse to indulge your loved one. This Valentine’s day, celebrate the spirit of love with some delicious adventures.

Water Bottles

and You

But how many Consumers are aware of the health risks posed by the bottles themselves? These containers are made using the chemical, polyethylene terephthalate or PETE. A recent study by the Institute of Environmental Geochemistry at the University of Heidelberg (the oldest university in Germany) found that PETE bottles leach a dangerous toxin called antimony into the water they contain. The study found that the levels of antimony increased the longer the water remained in the bottle. Another study found that to make bottles to serve American markets in a year, manufacturers used 17 million barrels of crude oil , enough to run cars for 12 months. It also resulted in the release of 2.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. This does not take into account the energy needed to fill the bottles, send them by truck to the consumer, refrigerate them, and recover, recycle or dispose of the empty bottles. Even today, many of us while travelling or on a visit to a hotel, ask for a bottle of mineral water, but do not care to check the best before date. And how many know of the kind of plastic used in that bottle ? Now, the aim of this article is to alert those who do not really know about the different types of plastics used in bottles and their safety aspects.. Take a plastic bottle you have in the fridge. You will find some letters and a number on the bottom side within a tri-

angle. Those letters and numerals ( 1,2,3..and so on) denote the type of plastic the bottle is made of. PET(E) plastic bottles have No.1 on them and are made of a strong, durable plastic and have good chemical resistance. It is clear, and is good for protecting against leakage, gas and moisture. These are mostly used by mineral water suppliers and makers of soft drinks. Some fruit juices come in bottles with this number. HDPE bottles have No.2 at the bottom, and are made out of high-density polyethylene. Because they are made of a more dense plastic bottle, they are good for things that spoil easily, such as milk or fruit juice and help their longer shelf life. Some household chemicals and detergents come in such bottles. PVC: If you see a bottle with a No.3 stamped at the bottom, then it is a PVC bottle, made from polyvinyl chloride. This type of plastic bottle is very flexible and used when the liquid or food inside is known to expand or contract, so that it can do so without cracking the plastic. PVC is an excellent choice for salad oil, mineral oil, and vinegar. It is also commonly used for shampoos and cosmetic products LDPE bottles, made from low-density polyethylene have the No. 4. This is thin plastic used as a waxy moisture barrier and is cheap. Some milk cartons and squeezable condiment bottles are made of this plastic. No. 5 stamped bottles are PP made of polypropylene. Polypropylene has a very high melting point,

which is why it is traditionally used for items that have hot liquids like coffee poured into it. Infant milk bottles are made of polypropylene and are safe since they do not contain bisphenol-A, a chemical harmful to babies.

The missing number is 6. It is because No. 6 is commonly known as Styrofoam and not used for plastic bottles. If you see No.7 on the bottle, then it is made out of either none of the first noted five materials or made from a combination of two or more layers of other plastics. Disposable, single use water, juice and soft drink bottles will have this No.7. Almost 90 per cent of the bottles that come with a variety of beverages, soft drinks or condiments are thrown into the bin and not easily biodegradable. The buried bottles not only take up hundreds of years to biodegrade but also leak toxic additives into the groundwater. Some plastic items that get incinerated along with other garbage release toxic chemicals into air adding to the pollution...( TO BE CONTINUED) – Correspondent

Mediclaim policy The Supreme Court has said that insurance companies can repudiate a mediclaim policy if true and full information is not furnished. The court said it was obligatory for the policy taker to make a true and full disclosure about the information sought by insurance companies. A mediclaim policy is a non-life insurance policy meant to assure a policy holder of meeting certain expenses pertaining to injury, accidents or hospitalisation. It is a contract of insurance and whatever information is asked for in the proposal form should be disclosed. It is not for the proposer to determine whether the information sought for is material for the purpose of the policy or not, said a bench comprising Justice DK Jain and Justice RM Lodha.

f you ask any Chennai resident why he or she prefers packaged ‘mineral’ water to tap water, the answer will be that bottled water is safer and healthier than tap water. Until some years ago, every family in the city used to boil water taken from Metrowater taps and use it. When the city faced an acute water shortage a few years ago , bottled /sachet water became popular and consumers were lured by suppliers making tall claims about the quality and safety aspects of their brand. But it is a fact that the municipal water is safer than some of the sachet or bottled water sold . Even families that have water purifiers, opt for packaged water in 20-ltr cans since it is readily usable.

Bank pulled up It is a common practice for many banks to treat new customers with more attractive packages than offered to old customers. A Chandigarh resident lodged a complaint with a District Consumer Forum against a bank for giving loan to a new customer at a lower rate of interest than that charged for a loan taken by him some time ago. The forum held that the interest rate of any old loanee should be lowered to bring it at par with the interest rate fixed for its new customers ‘so that all its customers, whether old or new, who have opted for adjustable rate of interest pay the same rate of interest during any particular period.’

Honda has announced a recall of over six lakh 2007 and 2008 model Fit, City and Jazz cars worldwide, after a fire hazard involving a power window switch resulted in a death in South Africa. Honda said extreme amounts of liquid, such as rain or melted snow, can flood the master power window switch on the driver’s side, causing the vehicle to overheat. Honda said there were no reports of injuries in the United States. The Fit is sold as the City and Jazz in international markets. The automaker said that current 2009 and 2010 models are not affected by the recall.

Beat it! It’s tough. It’s smart. It’s Beat. Mind it! fter getting an overwhelming response in a poll among the three concepts – Beat, Trax and Groove – before they went into production, General Motors obliged the public by getting the Beat on to the roads. Ever since its display as a concept, the Beat has generated a lot of interest. Remember Skids from the movie Transformers: Revenge of the fallen? Yes, it’s the same machine. With its funky looks and dynamic designing, Chevy Beat offers more than just looks. Competing with the likes of i10, A-Star and Ritz, Chevrolet has launched another competent car that is here to capture the market share of the enormously growing small car segment. Petrol engine is the only choice the Beat has been launched in. But you have got three variants – PS, LS and LT – all of them powered by 1.2L, 1199cc 16 valve DOHC engine. The performance of the engine is great for a small car. With 80.5PS of maximum power at 6200rpm and 108Nm of maximum torque at 4400rpm, the acceleration and performance of the Beat is excellent in its segment. The 1.2L engine is finely refined though at high rpms, it tends to get edgy. The car is a pleasure to drive in urban areas with its compact size and the best in class mileage. The fuel economy of the car is what makes it a winner. 18.6 kmpl, according to ARAI, makes Beat a frontrunner in its class. Transmission is trouble-free and efficient, though early shifting is needed for high revs. The hydraulic power steering makes the driving more conve-

nient through the busy lanes. Equipped with McPherson strut-type front suspension and compound crank type to the rear, the ride quality of this Chevy passes with flying colours. The fine tuned suspension takes in the bumps and patches of the roads effortlessly to provide first-rate riding experience. The 155/70 R14 tyres are small but gets justified with the fuel economy. The bold front grille of the Beat gives it a brawny image with aggressive twinbarrel design headlamps. Crisp lines all through, scraped up A-pillar and swept roofline make the exterior of the Beat all funky. The rear door handles are where the rear quarter glass would be making the car look like a two-door model and a sportier one at that. Although the rear resembles that of the Santro, it goes well with the overall design. The interiors are no less lively, the instrument cluster instantly grabbing your attention. With its cool ice blue backlighting, the set-up is inspired by the motorbike clusters. A large analogue speedometer accompanied by a digital display that shows off the odometer, trip reading, fuel level, time

sits behind the steering wheel with indicators surrounding it. The centre console houses a built-in music system that comes with plug-n-play USB port and aux input as well. The controls are neatly placed and are designed for easy usability. There is storage space thoughtfully arranged all around the inside of the Beat, so storing things will not be a problem. Front seats provide generous leg room. Height adjustable driver seat and tilt-adjust steering wheel promise you the perfect position for driving. Rear seats don’t score much in the conformability part as much as the front but one can live, (or sit) with it. So the Beat is comfortable for a four-person drive, but be ready to cramp a bit for five-seating. The boot gives you ample space than that you would expect off a small car. The safety features include ABS (not going to tell what it is this time), dual airbags in the front and a 4-star NCAP rating. Automatic climate control switches between heating and air-conditioning modes automatically with pre-programmed temperatures.

Chevrolet has once again rolled out a sure winner in its line up for India. Beat is loaded to grab a serious market share for Chevy. And if the booking figures are to be believed, Beat is surely making a loud thump. Beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
