Vanity Fare From boutiques to bowling alleys, it can’t get better than this. This week, catch all the action at the haute and happening Nungambakkam!
D
id you know that Nungambakkam was one of the five villages initially acquired by the British in the 1800s? This posh area that was once meant to house the elite – the likes of the British governors and their subordinates – continues to retain its pride and honour, with the rich and renowned nestling in its beautiful bunglows. And moreover, Nungambakkam today is not only a high-end residential locality, but also a ‘mini-Las Vegas’ in terms of its retail scope. A great chunk of the locals, visiting and floating population of Chennai, relies on the retail development of Nungambakkam to fulfill their various shopping needs. And here we present you a slice of the pie, beginning with Utthamar Gandhi Salai, a.k.a Nungambakkam High Road. Lashing out from under the Gemini flyover, Nungambakkam High Road has everything that you need for sustenance. Banks, work places, places of worship, educational establishments, star hotels (the two most prominent ones in the city), shopping malls, a bowling alley – name it and you have it.
And there are enough refreshment options to give you that boost

Ispahani Centre
nungambakkam
Even as my sight fell on New Yorkers, a vegetarian restaurant for delicious Mexican, Italian and Lebanese food, I wondered how many restaurants this place could hold. The variety here includes Rangi’s Chinese restaurant; Little Italy and Bella Ciao, the authentic Italian ‘ristorrant’ for Indians, Italians and everyone; Dhaba Express for the ‘makhan’ ad kkam High Ro and ‘lassi’ lovers; KFC s on Nungamba nt ra au st Re & Shops for the chicken freaks of the world; Pizza Corner for the pizza lovers; Opal Inn (Ranjith Hotel) for those amazing sizzlers and Dindugul Thalappakof energy you need attu biriyani and Khurrinji restauafter every 2-3 shop-stops. Apart from rants for those who crave for South Indian the usual hang-outs of Marrybrown, Cafe delicacies. Indeed a heaven for foodies! Coffee Day and Sweet Chariot in Ispahani Centre, there are small food joints like And what better way to digest a heavy Mango ‘n’ Tango and Burger Man which ..............................................................................................
serve you hot snacks and cool drinks, while the Bosotto Brothers (right outside Rangoli and Karishma) engage you with their choices of fresh fruit juices. But the super stars in demand are their neighbours - the ‘kulfi-wala’ and ‘chaat-wala’ who have been apparently requested to shut shop between 5 and 7 every evening to avoid traffic congestion in that part of the road!
Letting the kulfi melt in my mouth (priced a mere Rs. 25) I proceeded to explore and record more of this happening retail strip. Had it not been for the kulfi in one hand (and mouth) and the many shopping bags in the other, I would have stepped into Sri Krishna Sweets for their heart-melting ‘Mysore pak’. Harder to resist were the mouth-watering pastries and crispy croissants of Cakes ‘n’ Bakes. The apple pie here is next best only to the Taj’s. For the health conscious, there is Nuts ‘n’ Spices. And for the beauty-conscious, there is Health ‘n’ Glow. And the diamond die-hards are not spared either. Bapalal and Kantilal have
seen to that. And of course, there are exclusive options for the menfolk too. While their better halves were seen choosing the sparkliest diamonds, the Martians could be seen hunting in the showrooms of Basics and Adidas in Pottipatti Plaza and Van Huesen and Louis Phillippe in Paramount Plaza.
street walk
As I walk down one of the most-trodden roads in the city, I am being pulled in hundred different directions. Every store has a reason to grab your attention and you feel there is an invisible harp that extracts the beam of vision from your eye and pulls towards it.
meal from one of these places than ‘shopping it out’ in the neighbouring stores. My eyes, feet and purse reached out to the dozen clothing stores studded alongside invitingly. There are international brands like Marks & Spencers and ColorPlus, sharing space with stores like Satrangi and Easy to Wear. While Satrangi houses a chic collection of apparels for one and all, Easy to Wear is the export quality products store where you can find the coolest of stuff that the hottest of brands either do not stock, or over-price. Further down, Rangoli and Karishma are ever-beckoning with their gorgeous collection of exclusive traditional Indian wear. On the other side, Man Mandir, Rupkali, Nalli and The Raymond showroom with its exclusive gatsby collection meet the clothing needs of any elegant Indian wedding.
And it doesn’t stop with just this. There is Makoba Elite Stationery to replenish your study supplies and Toy Shop (in ChottaBhai Centre) to satisfy your child. For more specific options like optical gadgets, you can choose from Vijaya Optical House, Zeiss and Savera Opticians, while Maurya Arts and Crafts (next to Taj Coromandel) and CIE (Cottage Industries Exposition Ltd.) offer products of astounding artistry and craftsmanship. But at the end of the day, if all that you want to do is just go on a vacation instead of transferring your funds to the retailers’ accounts, you are still welcome to visit The Travel People or yatri.com or Akbar Travels for some holiday planning. This is not an easy place to avoid, after all. - Shruti K M

to Awe!
Now, make a fashion statement with your space.
H
ome décor has taken a very significant place in today’s ‘lifestyle market’. Be it thematic furniture or antique decorative pieces that add that touch of élan to your house, the art of making up your interiors has come a long way over the recent years. Adding yet another vertical of versatility to this concept is the hottest trend of ‘designer home furnishing’. To make Chennai feel proud of holding such a novelty, we have Darsha and Ritesh Elchiwala. Through their maiden venture called Glamorama Home Fashion, they have given the trend-setters of the lifestyle slab of Chennai, a new style statement to talk about. A combined product of NIFT, Chennai and Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, Darsha is the creative spirit of Glamorama, while Ritesh is the spirited business head whose never-ending attempts to reach out to the people of Chennai is taking them places. Ritesh, an engineering graduate with a job in IT and heart in entrepreneurship, met Darsha, who was a talent siren in the field of fashion merchandising. And when they decided to join hands, it was not only in marriage, but also in business. Glamorama was first introduced to Chennai three years ago when the concept of ‘designer home furnishing’ was incomprehensible to many. A few would understand what it was all about, after you come down to the level of explaining that ‘we design furnishing for your house, just like designing clothes for a model’. And for the benefit of any bemused reader, I may add that they are fashion experts who clothe your home instead of clothing you. And they have come up with this initiative after a careful market research and positive response in exhibitions. On asking how they form and develop their
glamoram a Tailoring expressions to impressions
clientele Ritesh explains, “Almost all the people, who approach us, come to us because they have been referred to us.” It is quite evident that by ‘word-ofmouth’, the name of Glamorama Home Fashion now rings a bell for many. Their services include consultation on various aspects like design theme, site feasibility, space balance and colour coordination, site visit and idea pool with the architects and interior designers. And the choice of fabric they offer you is exquisite and mesmerising. Right from silk, blends of silk, linen, cotton and designer polyesters to a range of natural fibres like banana, bamboo, jute and korai, their line-up of fabric varieties are waiting to add richness and royalty to your home. One look at their store in Alwarpet and you will understand their expertise and quality of the products and services they offer. On speaking of everyday challenges that is guaranteed with any new venture, Darsha explains that, “we work hard on convincing and explaining to people that ours is a lifestyle product and has its own worth and significance.” And yet another speciality of their product is that they buy materials directly from the craftsmen and have begun paying more attention to the possibility of bringing a ray of hope into the lives of these indigenous skilled workers. That’s what we call ‘fashion with a cause’! It’s your turn to add glamour to your lives! - Shruti K M

Get a Virtual Read! If you have the habit of reading on the move, then E-Book Readers can be your best pal!
E
A list of E-Book Readers that have been rocking our world and the features that make them so:
lectronic Paper (E-Paper) or Electronic Ink (E-Ink) display is a technology designed to mimic the look of good old ink. Unlike a conventional flat panel display, which uses a backlight, e-paper is capable of holding text and images indefinitely without drawing electricity, while allowing the image to be edited later.
Amazon Kindle 2 If you still haven’t heard about it, wake up! - Sleek design (it weighs around 290 grams approximately) - Wireless with Whispernet - you can get your favourite book in seconds - Long battery life - Global coverage
Advantage e-paper!
- Stores over 1,500 books
E-Paper is considered more comfortable than your conventional displays because the image is stable and does not need to be refreshed constantly. The wider viewing angle and the fact that it reflects ambient light does make reading easier. An E-Paper display can even be read in direct sunlight! Lightweight and durable, it can currently provide only a monochrome display (i.e. black on white). You can lay your hands on a full colour version sooner than you think.
- Just like paper Kindle provides a crisp black-and-white 6” screen and you’ll never miss your paper - Built-in PDF reader - Read aloud options (Read-To-Me feature and their experimental ‘Text-toSpeech’ feature can read out loud to you)
kindle
Sony Reader - Touch Edition
Why do I need eBook Reader? If you are a book worm, this could be the best gadget you have ever laid your hands on. You can have an entire library at your fingertips. You can also take notes, save clippings of quotations and highlight passages etc... They’re convenient, portable and eco-friendly. But if you have the habit of reading over a cup of tea ensure that your digital companion doesn’t get a share of it. Check-list Here are a few factors you need to check before you make your buy:
- Write and edit notes - Free wireless access to Wikipedia!
- Touch screen capability - Access to over 1 million free public domain titles from Google books - Ability to borrow E-Books from libraries - Bookmark / highlight / zoom or take freehand notes with stylus - Battery life lasts upto 2 weeks without recharge - Mac and PC compatible - Audio player - Picture viewer - Expandable memory - memory stick PRO Duo™ & SD card memory slot supports up to 16GB
1. From touchscreens to screen size and type and wireless capabilities, check out for features that make your reading experience more comfortable.
Barnes & Noble’s ‘Nook’ Barnes and Noble launched a new E-Book Reader called ‘Nook’. It does look like Amazon’s younger version, only you get a cool colour multitouch screen instead of the keyboard. It runs on Google’s Android OS and sports wireless capability from AT&T.
2. Some of them have thousands of titles from a particular service while others can support a few files from the internet, hence know what you want.
-Compact size: 7.7 inches
3. Problems are just a splash away! Before you get your hands on one, check out the technical support it provides.
- Paper like display - 3.5 inch colour touchscreen LCD with One touch control and navigation - Free wireless from Barnes & Noble via AT&T - Expandable storage (2GB with a microSD slot) by Barnes & Noble

If it all sounds jargon, ask your friend who was a toddler in the late eighties and early nineties, the time period I believe the ‘video game’ became family entertainment and gave the kids a new reason to bunk school. The dawn of home entertainment Theoretically, ‘gaming’ began much earlier than the early nineties; it began in the fifties when TicTac-Toe went from the paper to the huge vaccumtube computers. If you decide to fish for ones that were front runners to the consoles we own today, you might find those of as early as the seventies. Magnavox first came up with the ‘Odyssey’ in the early seventies, a console powered by batteries, offering crude graphics and no sound. It was then succeeded shortly by the Atari ‘Pong’. Atari and Magnavox then dominated the seventies and the eighties with only a handful of other competitors producing successful consoles. This domination ended only in the early nineties as Nintendo and Sega vied for the top seat in family entertainment. Sega then fell and the break of the new millennium brought Nintendo’s new opponents – Sony and Microsoft. Such has been the evolution of video games, from silent devices to being the centre of family entertainment. Caught in this evolution were the hand-helds, ensuring more portability in gaming and with it, a good level of privacy.
What’s up in the market? Identifying the big players in the business today needs no more than one quick glance at the market. In a market that stands divided between the PC and these consoles, the Sony PlayStation, the Microsoft XBOX and Nintendo appear the clear favourites.
First launched in year 2000, it is now in its second version known as the XBOX 360. As popularity goes, XBOX seems to dominate the Indian market owing to affordability, though sales elsewhere might paint a different picture.
The PlayStation was started out towards the end of 1994 when Nintendo approached Sony for CDROM gaming memory. After a few phases, over a decade, the platform from Sony is now in its PlayStation3 version which has received rave reviews from hard-core gamers. Nintendo, although having been in the industry for longer than Sony, only joined the CD-ROM race with the new millennium when they launched the GameCube. Though a fairly successful console, its popularity is often believed to have been eclipsed by the PlayStation and the XBOX; Hence, Nintendo launched the Wii in 2006. With the Wii, gaming entered a new dimension where, instead of buttons being pressed to play, hand and body movement resulted in action on the screen and ‘virtual reality’ began to make some real sense.
Along the same time as the GameCube, came the XBOX from the Microsoft stable.

Choosing your console! The XBOX sales figures are an example of the trend in the Indian market, where budget plays a vital role. The PlayStation3 might have set its standards and received wide acknowledgement around the world, but it doesn’t go easy on our pockets. Hard-core gamers might argue their decision is often based on brand loyalty and features offered, but for much of the world where gaming is relegated to just entertainment, economy comes

Work In & Out With gyms opening up in almost every neighbourhood, it’s time to work your way to a healthier lifestyle! ost working people today lead a sedentary lifestyle yet do understand that for ‘living healthy,’ it’s imperative to be engaged in some form of physical activity – either play a sport, exercise at home or go to a gym – to keep their body and mind in good spirits. Of these three options, gyms seems to be the most feasible and viable option for Chennaiites. Not many can afford to create a home gym nor be self-motivated to enrol in a sport. The easiest and practical solution would be to register at a gym, and workout amidst like-minded individuals, with trainers keeping an eye on you. It’s Gym Time Several choices are indeed available to Chennaites to stay fit and burn out those extra calories. With atleast one state-ofthe-art gym in every locality, the options and customised packages are endless. Gold Gym, which is located in over 25 countries, has a facility in Alwarpet that has the latest cardio and strength training equipment along with dynamic groupexercise packages which include dance classes where one can learn everything from salsa to Indian contemporary styles. Step into Talwalkars at Indira Nagar, a J.R.D. Tata quote: “Every morning when I do my fitness workout, it is the name of Talwalkars that comes to my mind”, etched on a metal board welcomes you. The gym assesses a new member with a ‘Body Composition Analyzer’ and recommends a suitable programme based on the age, fat, fitness and also keeps monitoring the results on a regular basis. “More than the equipment or the environment, the person has to do the exercises
as per the programme recommended. This will yield better results,” says Nirmala, Branch Manager. Maverick is another prominent gym at Indira Nagar. It offers various packages, uniquely designed to suit each one’s needs. On ECR, Palavakkam, you have Atom, where the reception desk sports a nice picture of Kapil Dev who visited this gym last year when about 80 boys who played for ICL toned their body muscles in this very place. Mr. Arul, Branch Manager, says, “There is more awareness today about the need for being fit and healthy. We have designed a programme called ‘Express Circuit’ for people who cannot spare more than 30 minutes to workout. This programme gives the effect of doing all the workouts.” All those who complain about having no time, are you listening? O2, one of Chennai’s ‘stylish’ gyms is at Nungambakkam and many other locations in the city. It offers special discounts to senior citizens. ‘Body Lyrics’, a unit of O2 located at Savera Hotels, teaches silambattam too in addition to the various fitness schedules. What’s more? Try ‘Virtual Cycling’ at the Velachery branch, and ‘Virtual Walking’ at the Mogappair branch. We heard that quite a few opt for health powders as an easy way out.

So, if you’ve decided to join a gym in 2010, here are a few factors to take into consideration:
10
- Location
- Hygiene & Cleanliness
- Timing
- Programmes
- Staff & Trainers
- Facilities
- Equipment
- Pricing
We asked a gym instructor at O2 whether consumption of supplementary health powders sold in some gyms and even at supermarkets will have any side effects. He tells us, “It must be consumed strictly as per the trainer’s instructions and appropriate workouts should be done. Taking it as and when you wish and without doing any workout will definitely lead to complications.” All these gyms have exclusive schemes and programmes for working professionals. Many gyms have physiotherapists, certified instructors, steam baths, saunas, massage therapies and a few even teach kickboxing! Do Not Quit While writing this article, we also tried to explore the reason for many gym dropouts. We couldn’t find the exact
reason but the gyms did say, they do keep in touch with all their members and motivate them to come back and workout. It looks like laziness and lack of determination are the main reasons for the drop outs. Some have work till late in the night and find it difficult to make it to the gym the next morning. Joining a gym has benefits aplenty, so for this New Year, kick off that lethargy and makeup your mind to look good and stay healthy.

From the hot and zesty Pav Bhajis to the sweet and sour Pani Puri’s, each in its own devious ways tempt a man to splurge in and relish mouthfuls of these North Indian delicacies. Located at every nook and corner of the city, it wins hands down over other junk foods like hamburgers and pizzas. It was originally known to be a mixture of potato pieces, crispy bread crumbs, spices and beans. Later it evolved to include other popular combinations which gave rise to Papdi Chaat, Aloo Tikki, Channa Samosa and other such tempting delights. Unforgettable are those days when we craved to grab a quick bite of those alluring chaats being sold right opposite our colleges and offices. All this relish sure does come with a bunch of thumb rules though! One, head to a place definitely on the roadside and not some posh hi-funda restaurant. Two,
trust the North Indian chaat sellers better for they possess the magic touch to melt your senses with those tangy treats! Three, avoid taking the Pani Puris to your tables for, the fun of gulping it down before the next one lands on your Katoris is indeed lost! And last of all, enjoy it with a carefree mind and do not mind if the seller hands you a newspaper for a tissue! Roadside stalls apart, this gourmet has found its righteous spot at all the multicuisine hotels and restaurants too. For those who smirk at road-side vendors, there are restaurants like Gangotri and Kailash Parbat, which specialise in presenting you the most tempting chaat items along in air-conditioning, with clean furniture, tissues and well-dressed waiters to serve you.

ProBiotic k n o w . s p e a k . a c t
market today. Curd, a lactobacillus fermented product, has been part of the Indian diet for ages. Pickles and butter are other good sources of probiotics. What are probiotics and how good are they?
R
ecently, there was a news item in the dailies that the Central Government will soon be issuing guidelines for regulation of probiotic foods that have flooded the Indian markets. A task force has been set up by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to formulate these guidelines which will ensure product safety, quality, reliability and level playing for all companies manufacturing probiotic products. The task force is expected to publish the norms by January 2010. Several food products found in the market today make claims about their efficacy as health food. Some say that they are functional foods, probiotic and superior to other such foods. How good are they is the question many buyers ask. According to Mr N.K. Ganguly, former director general of ICMR, probiotic food is an emerging category in our country and since a number of such foods are making a foray into the market, it is necessary that some guidelines are evolved to regulate
them and standards fixed for a product to be classified as probiotic. Labelling of a probiotic product giving details about the manufacturer, shelf life and storage conditions should be ensured to help the consumer and prevent unscrupulous people from making tall claims and misleading buyers. Some medically unproven claims are that probiotics slows the aging process have anti-oxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties, cures headaches and helps those with depression. Most probiotics in India are sold as dietary supplements and not all of them undergo the testing and approval processes that medicines do. Some varieties of chocolates claim to be probiotic but they are not, since due to heating during manufacturing, live bacteria are killed. Similarly, frozen yoghurts cannot be probiotic because they are stored at near-zero temperatures, destroying the bacteria. In fact, our Indian diet have a better proportion of probiotic health benefits than what we buy in the
Probiotic food is one that contains live bacteria, which is considered beneficial to humans. Our digestive tract has an estimated 400 types of probiotic bacteria which checks the harmful bacteria and keeps the digestive system in good shape. Lactic acid bacteria is the largest group of such bacteria in the intestine. That is why yoghurt which has Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria, is considered good. Yeast is a probiotic substance. But even in yeast, only certain strains are found suitable for some people. Therefore, be sure to check the label to find out whether that yoghurt pack contains live and active cultures; if you don’t see the information you need there, contact the manufacturer. Doctors recommend use of probiotics for diarrhoea control caused by prolonged intake of antibiotics. Probiotic supplements in the form of capsules or powder will restore beneficial bacteria and prevent diarrhoea. Owing to the health benefit, there is a huge demand for these food products globally. Leading dairy companies such as Amul, Nestle, Heritage and Mother Dairy have a presence in the market with their probiotic packs and the Indian consumer has started using them regularly. You must have already tasted Amul’s probiotic ice-creams.
Foods Some pharmaceutical majors too are venturing into this segment. A recent survey by Euromonitor International said that demand for branded yoghurt, curd, cultured milk and lassi are growing at rates above 14 per cent. According to Business Line, the Japanese global probiotics leader, Yakult, has entered the Indian probiotics market with a 50:50 joint venture with the French food major, Danone. The venture, which has set up a Rs 136-crore factory in Rai in Sonepet, Haryana, hopes to sell one million bottles a day of its health drink by 2010. Consult a doctor: It is stated that some are hypersensitive to probiotic products. It is therefore advisable for expectant mothers and nursing women to use nutritional supplements only after consulting their doctors. Similarly, the use of probiotics for the treatment of any disorder must be medically supervised. In the pharmaceutical sector , Ranbaxy has introduced a probiotic dietary supplement, Probi. At least 39 probiotic drug brands are already being marketed in the area of gastroenterology. With an estimated annual growth of 41.1 per cent, the market is expected to grow further in the coming years. The other major player in the probiotics segment includes Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, which has four probiotic brands, Zydus Cadila, Unichem, JB Chem and GlaxoSmithKline. - Correspondent
Why an ‘Expiry’ date?
Most packaged food products and medicines carry the ‘Use By’ date or the ‘Expiry’ date. It is not there without a reason. According to medical opinion, the longer the medicine or food is left on the shelves after its date of expiry, the more its bacteria will multiply, posing a risk to health. But how does a manufacturer decide on an expiry date and is there any criterion for it.
CMYK
Well ,before introducing a new product in the market, tests are conducted to find out at what stage will bacteria in the food become harmful. Further tests are done, taking into account the other factors such as packaging, transportation conditions, distance and storage temperatures. Whether an item should be kept in refrigerator or in a cool place is also indicated. The average expiration date for a medicine is three years as per US-FDA standards and then the drug is discarded. Of course, there are some exceptions, such as medications like nitroglycerine used to treat heart conditions, insulin used by diabetics, and some antibiotics, which do not degrade slowly. ‘Use By’ dates have a degree of safety built in, in order to protect the industry.’ For some foods, the shelf life is an important factor to health. Foods left unused for too long will develop bacterial colonies that may cause food poisoning. Pasteurised milk can remain fresh for five days after its sell-by date if it is refrigerated properly. Be it biscuits, icecreams or medicines, do check both the date of manufacture and the expiry date before you pay.

War of the Wheels S
ilence ruled the streets. Sky is dark with the occasional blinks of lightning. Even the winds blew muted. Roads are lined with blazing fire. Then came the sounds of the battle. Engine tremors echoed in all the directions. At the next sound of thunder, the machines took off with a roar that tore the roads apart. Their tyres didn’t seem to touch the ground as they flew to fight for the top spot. Before they get to the finish line, let us take a brief peek at the contestants.
Bajaj Pulsar 150 DTS-SI Bajaj has been a household name in India. And their favorite product, Pulsar, became a cult sort of bike with massive following. Look left, look right, look front, look back, you will be looking at a Pulsar. That is how the success of the Pulsar is gauged. The Pulsar series brought the Bajaj a major share of market that was controlled by Hero Honda. And it still continues to do so. Being the only twin-spark featured 150cc or any other segment for that matter, Pulsar has got the advantage being a great performer as well as fuel economic. The DTS-SI feature is a constant in all the models of Bajaj. With ever increasing sales figure right from its birth, Pulsar is at the peak with its competitors trying hard to catch up with the legend.
Yamaha FZ series Yamaha made a come back, with a bang we can say, with the launch of the FZ series. FZ-16, the first in the series, is the hunkiest of the lot in the market. With its naked-bike kind of body design, it jump started the otherwise dull sales figures of Yamaha. Not wanting to lose the grip, the company followed it with the FZ-S and the recent Fazer. Innovative design, wide tubeless tyres, unique headlamp, mono shock-absorbers, large front disc brake and the almost-straight handle bar has made the FZ series the choice among the younger generation. Though the mileage is a big let down, that’s a compromise, many are willing to take, to make the bike their own. Regarded as the Pulsar-killer, the FZ series sure is proving to be the lord of the streets. If the designers at Yamaha can come out with such cool looking bikes, what happened when they plotted the designs for the bulbous Libero and the disastrous old Fazer?
Hero Honda CBZ Xtreme It has been some time since Hero Honda came up with a bike that is good in performance and styling. The void has been filled up with the latest edition of the CBZ. Solid body, LED tail lights, dual colour alloy wheels are the attractions of the CBZ Xtreme. As with most of the Hero Honda bikes tradition, Xtreme is packed with all the standard equipments and features. CBZ has been a great bike and with its name-tag, Xtreme was full of expectations at the time of release. Fusing style and mileage is not easily accomplished, but Xtreme passes through both of them with ease. With all the latest bikes getting their instrument cluster digitalised, it is a surprise that Hero Honda is yet to take the path. Unlike the other 150cc bike Hunk, launched by Hero Honda in the same time, Xtreme is quite successful and is supported by the rising graph of the sales books.
TVS Apache 160RTR TVS has grown big after its break-up from Suzuki. And the company has become one of the leading manufacturers in the country with its fuel-economy specific models. Apache gave a new face to TVS in the style department. The response has been overwhelming with Apache scaling new heights in sales. So, it is natural for sequels to come. Came Apache 160RTR, followed by Apache 160RTR Fi. The successors had engine cowls, LED tail lights, improved engine with alternative fuel injected version. Apache had the downs with the slushy gear box and continues to do so in the recent editions also. With great fuel economy and performance, Apache is one of the hot selling models without a doubt.

he food you eat here is all organically grown on the premises ( yes, on Dimitri Klien’s 100-acre organic farm in Kodaikanal), and the bed that you lie on or the chairs that beckon you are all made from re-cycled wood. And, again, the various buildings within the 35-acre property are either made of re-cycled wood or palm leaf thatch. This is no script for the next sci-fi film; it was how Dimitri conceived ‘The Dune’ in 2001.
A once-high profile advertising professional, Dimitri settled down in Auroville, bought up 35 acres of coastal land about 15 kilometres from Pondicherry to make his dream come true. “It took me two years to decontaminate my system before I could think of venturing into something new,” says Dimitri. What took him eventually three years to build on the barren sands on the East Coast was completely destroyed in the Tsunami of 2004 and Dimitri, with his neversay-die will power, built it all back shipshape in no time. He put up one cottage after the other, each a unique dwelling by itself, and developed an eco-village that blends so much with

nature that you really don’t miss the lack of cable television or telephones in the rooms. Spread widely over the beachfront terrain, these cottages are a unique blend of modern comfort (read: western) and the advantages of traditionalism (read: Indian). For instance, the thatched roof of one of the cottages makes the interior so cool even at the height of summer, that you don’t need a ceiling fan, let alone airconditioning. Beds enclosed in nets keep the omnipresent mosquitoes away. Some cottages offer the privacy of an independent house plus your own space with an open bedroom encircled by a high wall, semi-open bath, tiled roof with a courtyard in the centre to let rain or sun in. Moving around the ‘village’ is on bicycles – each cottage is provided with a minimum of two. Of course, for the lazy or elderly, Dimitri has an electric vehicle for use on request. The Dune lives upto its name in the ‘eco’ category. Dimitri informs us, “Most of the chairs in the restaurant are from a broken down ship. The tables are all made from old wood. The doors of all the cottages are recycled wood. All the waste from the kitchen is turned to compost for the garden. The used water from the cottages and kitchen is recycled
for watering the garden and lawns. Hot water for the cottages is made using solar energy!” Dimitri’s 100-acre farm in Kodaikanal grows vegetables and fruits, coffee and produces dairy products. A large part of the 35-acre Dune is set aside for a variety of produce for daily consumption in the resort. “Our entire requirement of rice comes from our own paddy fields. We do not use any chemical fertilisers or pesticides at The Dune or at Kodaikanal. We even conduct workshops for local farmers on the use of organic manure and fertilis ers for their crops,” says Dimitri. Today, The Dune has rolling greens interspersed with sand dunes, swaying palm trees, scores of shrubs and plants, with winding pathways laid with gravel and mud - no asphalt is used anywhere. It is the ultimate in eco-friendliness and is an epitome of green values to our world in these times of global warming and green house emission issues. - Nikhil Raghavan

A 'Feel Good' One, I
If you are wondering what this movie ‘Paa’ is about, you need to watch it. But here is a crux for you. An innovative narrative and an impeccable star cast, Director Balki did no wrong in choosing a rather unique and rare father-son relationship that brought the best out of both the Bachchans. After a neat job in ‘Cheeni Kum’, the director is once again successful in living up to his loyal audience’s preference. ‘Paa’ is a brave initiative by him and to actually make Big B everything he is not in this movie, needs to be applauded. Everything from actions, to attitude to height to mannerisms are presented in an absolutely different and exceptional character, Auro. The story is about the witty young boy, Auro (Amitabh Bachan), who suffers from a very rare genetic disorder, Progeria. The disorder typically is an accelerated physical ageing; Auro is mentally 13, but physically five times older. Auro for the kind of person he is, is very happy in spite of his disorder and is shown coping with it in a good spirit. He lives with his
mother Arundati Naag (Vidya Balan), a gynaecologist and is not aware that young politician Amol Arte (Abhishek Bachchan) is his father. At an event in Auro’s school, Arte and Auro meet and develop a very beautiful relationship, to Arundati’s shock. Arundati then reveals to Auro about his father and the relationship . The movie is then well-knit and takes you through how Auro brings his separated parents together, in his own typical way. The movie needs to be given credit for the very articulate and witty script. It proved beyond doubt the director’s exemplary sense of humour and his distinctive style. Many argue that the plot was predictable, but the movie is simply good for its own subtle and simple story telling. Unlike other movies that focussed on human disorders, this intends to do no teaching, but just forms a backdrop for drama in the plot. The music is also instrumental in making the audience experience the feel along with the characters.
The characterisation in the movie is flawless and most of the movie looks good because of the roles that were clearly established. Set in an urban locale , the movie deals with a lot of concepts like free and open political ideology, abortion, pre-marital sex and many more and what is worth mention is that all these are dealt with appropriately, and provide great value addition to the overall movie, aesthetically.
