aris styled after Mumtaz and Shakira, dark wood furniture decorated with startling brass designs, bead and brass earrings and bright coloured quilts from Jaipur: walk through this tiny store in Alwarpet and you might find quite a few unusual things for your home and wardrobe…

U!

Inaugurated recently (in February), House of Mayuram, located on C P Ramaswamy Road promises you a distinct collection. It offers a fascinating variety of saris and kurtis, painted antique furniture, light silver and brass jewellery and even a few quilts. They also stock blue pottery - cups and saucer sets, wall hangings, coasters and jewelry – made by Neerja, a Jaipurbased NGO.

points out to a dark green silk and netting ‘butterfly sari’ decorated with colourful satin roses and embellished butterflies. And then, there’s also the Shakira sari, among other styles, - a silver, pink and blue netting stitched in a sari with flared bottoms. We are impressed! “We also undertake customised orders. Even if you have an old sari, we could convert it into something trendier for you,” adds Kavita. The kurtis are an eclectic lot – demure light coloured frock-cut kurtis, to brighter blues and chutney green cottons and even olive green corduroys mixed with netting of the same colour. Most cotton and block printed kurtis have bright coloured embroidery on them, so if that is not your style, then perhaps it’s best you give this section only a quick glance through.

Enthralling beauty

Style statements for your home

Their elegant saris play with various materials – georgette saris that come with black and white printed leather edges, netting interspersed with silk, cotton saris with rich zari borders apart from an interesting variety of styles as well. “We have a collection of concept saris that usually come with pleats and tucks stitched in and can be worn very easily,” says Kavita Shekher, owner of the store, picking out the Mumtaz sari for us to see - a peach georgette with generous amounts of coloured lace stitched in, that is worn in winding layers and then she

On another side is a tall shelf, stocked to the top with colourful quilts, with gold block prints. The shop is dotted with wooden coffee and curio tables that are painted. Intricately carved brass is fitted into a large wooden chest that comes with matching bedside tables; two Chettinad pillars stand beside a rope-woven chair with carved handles which were found discarded in Kerala. “The quilts are from Jaipur,” explains Kavita, “most of the clothes and furniture here are also from Delhi. The furniture is made at a factory there. We usually source antique pieces of furniture from various parts of India and Indonesia, or even take in discarded chunks of furniture and treat the wood before painting it and converting it into a work of art.” They also have several painted metal vases, also made in Delhi.

A glass shelf contains funky jewellery, designed by Kavita. Flattened and carved brass earrings fitted with coloured beads at the end, a fish-shaped silver earring fitted with a green stone for its tail, bright coloured earrings made from painted sea shells; there is definitely ample choice here, despite prices being on the steeper side at this counter. They also have Kalbeliya-worked earrings here. Also Phot os : P on display are the beautiful blue pottery rabh uK items with bold floral patterns – made by Neerja, the NGO – these quartz and paper items are fragile, but will make artsy additions to your home. Nature Beckons When art marries nature, we get infinite possibilities to explore beauty!

W

hen any foreigner returns from Chennai, he is sure to take with him a Ganesha Idol, a silk sari and loads of handicrafts. So, when we heard of yet another handicrafts store, we were not surprised. But ‘Vibrant Nature’ had an intriguing tale to it; you get purely eco-friendly handicrafts here. Now, that’s what we call uniqueness! Unlike people who explore with singular eco-friendly products like jute bags or coconut shell based handicrafts, Vibrant Nature gives you a plethora of options to choose from. Having worked in an export company that deals with handicrafts, Ramakrishan wanted to explore the possibility of crafting artifacts using natural fibers. His curiosity led to research on resources and finally a year later, the company was registered for exporting and named as ‘Vibrant Nature’. It has been one of the leading manufacturer and exporter of quality handicraft goods for about a decade now, with the right mix of artistic skill, creativity and prudent use of raw materials. From 2005, they have been selling only natural products that are hand crafted and 100% bio-degradable. They are currently exporting to countries like US, UK and the Gulf. In India, the company deals with corporate organisations like Fab India, Raintree Hotels etc.

4

Mounting Challenges When you do something good, you are bound to meet with obstacles on your path. For someone who had tried his hand in something good and innovative, Ramakrishan did have challenges aplenty. As the company deals with handicrafts products, it was largely dependent on weather and human resources. Raw materials had to be procured at the right time. While heavy rain would spoil the raw materials, less rain would hinder the very process of extracting the raw materials. So lot of effort went into studying the various fibers. There were lots of rural self-help groups who were good in crafting natural products but they had no awareness of exporting. Vibrant Nature came as a bridge between the raw talent and export business. It is its close association with hundreds of established artisans, co-operative societies and craft work groups, with traditional talent and experience that has made Vibrant Nature into the reliable icon it is today. This is the only Indian company dealing with

more than 13 natural fibers as of now. The various types of fibers that the company deals with include banana fiber, palm leaf, sisal, talipot, screwpine, kora grass, coconut husk, coconut shell, arecanut and much more. Off their shelf From home décor items to accessories, they seem to have something for everyone. From curtains, cushion covers, pillow covers, table mats, runners, coasters, to lamp shades, bags and boxes, they can effortlessly make your home green. Now, our favourites of the lot were the coconut shell sculptures and the beautiful sisal lamp shades. Who could resist a beauty with a purpose? For those who spend the better half of your life in office, you can use their handmade paper for stationery or the biodegradable plates for your office canteen or party. Their price range too is very modest, ranging from tens to hundreds depending upon the product. They also customise the size, design and colour of the products as per your need.

As of now, they take only corporate and export orders through their website www. Vibrantnature.co.in. But soon, Vibrant Nature will come to your streets through their retail chain. They aim to be a one-stop shop for all natural handicraft products. We at On Sale Express, salute this venture that seeks to spread awareness about the natural products available around us, which could be successfully used as substitutes for non-degradable items and in the end, help in creating a greener environment. - Catherine Gilon

Watch out! Vibrant Nature’s retail shop is coming soon in Besant Nagar!

he biggest of the celebrations is here. Back in its own native, Indian Premier League is starting its third edition of the 20-20 tournament and, boy, are we thrilled? Since its inception, IPL has been garnering world wide popularity in its every season. Be it the opening and closing ceremonies, the matches, the prize money, or the stunning cheerleaders, there has always been the extravaganza factor around all of them. With 8 teams and an estimated brand value of $ 4.1 billion or Rs.18998 crore, IPL is just the beginning of bigger things to come. And we are here, not just to talk about the teams or its players, but also to tip you on how to show the support for your favourite teams.

CSK fans. From T-shirts, caps and key-chains, binoculars to compressed t-shirts (which expand to the original size if immersed in water for 5 minutes), Oceanbed has a whole collection of interesting CSK items and has tied up with Landmark, Megamart and Peter England outlets to bring it to you. Overtaking Kolkata Knight Riders as the most valuable team, Chennai Super Kings have hogged limelight mostly because of their captain, M.S.Dhoni. Kolkata Knight Riders Though not getting the act right to come anywhere near the IPL trophy, Kolkata Knight Riders was and is the most popular team in the IPL franchise. The fact that Shahrukh Khan owns the team and his own charisma have been the main factors that attributed to the team’s fame. Though they started off the first IPL match in its inaugural season with a blast from McCullum, it was the last time the team had a blast. Now that the team has changed their colours from black and gold to dark purple and gold, you also have to get updated on your wardrobe, right? Reebok is the official sponsor for the merchandise of the Knight Riders, so that is where you have to head to. If you don’t want to just cheer for them and are raring to do something to get them start winning, here’s a chance. With Nokia and KKR’s “Main Bhi Coach”, you can also get to send advice and tips for the team. Want more? and place into a blender. In another container, whisk together the milk, eggs and cooled butter. Pour the egg mixture into the blender and turn it on high. Depending on the power of your blender, you may have to stop ever so often to scrape down the sides and make sure the dry ingredients are incorporated. Continue blending until the batter is fully blended and there are no lumps. Take the blender off the base and fold in the strawberries. Keep the batter in the blender, as it makes a great pouring mechanism when you’re cooking the pancakes. Heat up a griddle or a large frying pan with a generous pat of butter and pour out the first amount of batter. Flip them up when edges seem a bit more solid than the center. Continue this process until all the batter is used.

Hazardous Wastes - a health risk

Insured money for stolen car

,

Environment activists are deeply concerned over the fact that our country has become a dumping ground for trash from abroad and all types of wastes, nuclear spillages or asbestos are being brought in clandestinely. On the pretext of boosting recycling business, some 105 nations regularly ship their hazardous non-biodegradable waste to India, at the peril of ignorant masses. Hazardous waste is any material that can no longer be used for its originally intended purpose, or has been used in some process, or leftovers or discarded material that got contaminated. For example, you buy some chemical and after using most of it, dump the remainder in the backyard. It contaminates the soil and becomes hazardous waste. Such a waste becomes a health risk also. All material that are no longer useful and have become outdated, come under this classification. To address this critical problem, the Hazardous Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules were issued in 1989 under the umbrella of Environment Protection Act (EPA). These rules classified hazardous wastes into 18 categories in its Schedule-1 based on the constituents present. The Central Government amended the Rules in 2000 and further in the years 2003 and 2008. These amended rules identified the types of hazardous wastes likely to be generated from dif-

ferent industrial processes. Categories of wastes banned for export and import have also been defined in these amendments, fulfilling the Basel Convention, ratified by India in 1992. (The convention worked out at Basel, Switzerland, and is ratified by 172 countries. It is the most comprehensive global environmental agreement on hazardous and other wastes.) Threat from E Waste: A report by the UN Environment Programme on e-waste says China and India are expected to see a sharp rise in electronics sales over the next decade, contributing to an e-waste mountain growing by 40 million tonnes a year. The UNEP says e-waste cannot be left ‘to the vagaries of the informal sector’. It says large-scale collection and recycling facilities need to be established in China, India, Brazil and Africa where levels of e-waste are rising. With a 10 per cent annual growth rate in generation of e-waste, which is one of the highest in the world, India’s environment might be facing a serious threat. Due to the lack of adequate standards for e-waste disposal, these toxic hi-tech products are partly recycled and the rest thrown into waste streams or garbage dumping yards. According to a new study released by the Electronics Industry Association of India (ELCINA) , the total e-waste generation in India by the end of the past year was around 4.34-lakh tonnes. It is likely to grow more since most electronic goods like TV and mobile phones are getting replaced faster than before due to introduction of technologically advanced versions. The study, conducted in association with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research under the Union Science and Technology Ministry’s ‘technology management programme’, revealed that over 95 per cent of the e-waste is segregated, dismantled and recycled in the unorganised sector located in urban slums. Recommending urgent technological intervention to tackle the problem of environmentally unsound and occupationally hazardous manner of collecting and segregating e-waste, the study has identified an apparent gap in both techno-

logical status and market viability of the existing organised recycling industry.

“The scenario of hazardous wastes in India is grim,” says a senior scientist with the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), the central research body with its headquarters at Nagpur. It is a growing cause for worry. Thousands of tonnes of unaccounted hazardous waste are lying at various ports. The quantum of hazardous waste reported to be generated per annum and that recycled under the registration scheme in Tamil Nadu is 2,55,281 and 87,173 tonnes per annum respectively. According to a Greenpeace Report, in 2007, India generated 380,000 tonnes of e-waste. Only 3% of this made it to the authorised recyclers’ facilities. India’s e-waste generation is growing at the rate of 15% and is expected to cross 800,000 tonne mark by 2012. By 2015, two billion PCs are expected to invade our homes and our mobile phone subscriber base is expected to be about 450 million. .

Recycling: At present, a few private sector companies in the organised sector, such as Trishyiraya Recycling unit (of Sims Recycling Group ) at Tambaram , Ecoreco in Mumbai and E-Parisara in Bangalore, are engaged in recycling e-wastes in an effective way . The e-waste material is segregated into various categories such as Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals, Plastic etc and shred. The pulverised material is exported for precious metal recovery in smelting refineries abroad. Besides these, there are several units in the unorganised sector which get regular supplies from scrap collectors as they offer better prices. But they employ cheap labour in crude working conditions for recycling work with minimal investment on equipment. Labourers working for about Rs.75 a day use crude means to extract usable parts and incinerate unwanted printed circuit boards.

few days ago an alarming report appeared in newspapers that about 470 tonnes of municipal hazardous waste, stuffed in 20 containers from Greece and French-controlled Reunion Island and meant for a Sivakasi-based paper manufacturing company landed at Thoothukudi port. The waste included batteries, thermocol, aluminium foil packing material and bottles, which cannot be processed as raw material for making paper. Customs officials detained the goods, imported in violation of the Hazardous Waste (Management, Handling and Trans-boundary Movement) Rules, 2008, and initiated legal action against the importer.

The District Consumer Forum based at Tirupati recently issued directions to the Hyderabad branch of the Reliance General Insurance Company to pay up the insured sum to the owner of a Toyota Innova car which was hired by two persons and stolen subsequently. The car driven by the owner-cum-driver , was first taken to Bangalore and later to Pondicherry where the duo stayed in a lodge. The duo later called up the driver-cum-owner to their room where they allegedly threw some powder at him that made him lose consciousness. When he came back to senses and looked around, the duo and his car were missing. The Pondicherry police with whom he lodged a complaint failed to trace the car and gave him a certificate stating that it was untraceable. Then, the car owner presented a claim for the insurance money. But the insurance company rejected it on the ground that the vehicle had no ‘valid permit’. The claimant however proved to the Consumer Forum that the vehicle had a valid ‘All India Permit’. The Forum President while issuing directions to the Insurance Company to pay up the insured money, referred to an earlier Supreme Court case and said that even if the vehicle had no ‘valid permit’, it was not ‘germane’ to the case so long as it had a valid insurance cover. The Forum also directed the company to pay another Rs.3,000 towards the legal expenses of the petitioner.

- the champ The next big small car from Ford hey have ‘Endeavour’ for the rough and tough, Fiesta and Ikon for the mid-sizers. Now Ford has launched Figo for the bigger small car segment in India. In the largest and rapidly growing small car market, Figo comes out as Ford’s flagship product with an attempt to gain some serious share. Though the similarities in design cannot be missed, Figo will replace Ford Fusion, which didn’t make much noise. With Ford opening new showrooms and service centres to cope with the expected demand Figo is going to cause, a lot is riding on the Figo’s shoulders. Advanced features, great efficiency and a very competitive price tag should help Figo in getting a head start. Coming in petrol and diesel versions, Figo has got four variants in both – LXI, EXI, ZXI and Titanium. The petrol version is driven by 1.2L duratec, 1199cc, 16V DOHC engine. It produces a maximum power of 71PS at 6250rpm and a maximum torque of

102NM at 4000rpm. The petrol engine is great at low and mid revs and doesn’t complain in the high revs either. The diesel counterpart of Figo is powered by 1.4L duratorq 1399cc, 8V DOHC engine. With maximum power of 61PS at 4000rpm and a peak torque of 160NM at 2000rpm, the diesel Figo is at its best in low revs and will be easier to drive in the urban traffic. Both the engines are designed to shell out best mileage figures in the segment without compromising on the power or performance. While the petrol engine is a whole new design, the diesel version has already proved its worth in Ford’s Fiesta and Ikon models. With a height adjustable driver seat, the hydraulic power assisted steering and a sporty 5-speed manual gear box makes driving a pleasurable one. Adding to a comfortable drive, the Figo also sports an independent dual path mount type McPherson strut in the front and semi-independent twist beam, coil spring type in the rear. Brak-

ing power is provided by ventilated disc and drum brakes in the front and rear respectively. The 14-inch 175/65 R14 type tyres are available in both tubeless and radial forms. The fuel economy and ride quality of the Figo is sure to make it a front runner in the race to the top. The exterior design of the Figo is fresh and appealing. A flowing front that joins with a distinctive trapezoid lower grille highlights the kinetic design of the Figo. The cat-eye like headlamps and the fog lamps in the corners of the front are nicely placed. The sides of the Figo have got a turn indicator that is followed by a comet-tail belt line. With the longest wheelbase in its class, the Figo has minimal overhang. The rear does remind you of Fusion but the resemblance ends there. Dual tone bumper with body colour and black elements provides a fresh looking rear. The overall design of the Figo is neat and simple without any unwanted bulges, giving it a sporty feel as soon as you spot one. The interiors of the Figo are designed to seat five people in maximum comfort possible in a B-plus segment car. Though the front row has got the intended comfort factors, the rear row may get you feeling cramped if three are seated, more so if you

are taller or wider. Having told that, the Figo, undoubtedly, has the best comfort packages available in the market. The boot has got a 284 litre capacity, the largest in the segment. You can also get more space by just getting the rear seats folded completely. The instrument cluster is dynamic, with red illumination, providing all the necessary information needed for the driver. The audio system comes with all the latest enhancements like bluetooth connectivity and more. The seats that are in dual tone colour enhance the luxury feel of the Figo.

Power windows, electric adjust mirrors, electric boot opener on dash, 6-speed wiper are other features that gives the Ford, the edge over others. To conclude, Ford Figo has got more features than other cars in the same segment without any doubt. The features partnered with a very competitive price tag should make it to the top of the list. Great fuel economy and ultimate performance makes Figo the all-rounder it is. Available Colours: - Squeeze, - Colorado Red, - Diamond White, - Moondust Silver, - Panther Black, - Sea Grey and Chill.

ast week, I had gone grocery shopping and here’s what happened. As usual, I shopped as less as I could, yet with two loaded carts. I was waiting at the billing counter, trying to keep my calm as one thing after another kept falling down. There, behind me stood a guy (a bachelor I think), with just a Maggi packet and a Tropicana can in hand. He first smiled at me. I ignored him, pushing my carts further down the line. Now, he shrugged his shoulders and was showing me his Maggi packet. Meaning, lady let me go first, you have a whole baggage out there. I puffed and moved on. He took courage and said, “Aunty, I’ll take only two minutes,” and this time, I had lost my patience. I turned around and said, “If that Maggi packet is all you have, you should probably do more shopping, I am gonna take a while here.” My two-minute troublemaker was gone for good. Evil me!

Little Confusion I

t was our parent’s wedding anniversary and we had gone to our favourite restaurant in Mylapore. We dragged along our two-and-ahalf year old nephew along. My nephew is a cutie pie and can be nice if he chooses to be. The minute we entered the niche restaurant, he started playing truant. When the waiter came to pour water (a good 20 minutes later), my nephew asked him impatiently, “when will you bring my rice, I am hungry. “ The waiter blinked at the lil’ imp and replied that he’ll bring it soon. Finally, the food arrived and my nephew insisted on washing his hands (he likes playing in the water). My mom asked him to go to the right and wash his hands. The poor chap went but couldn’t reach the tap, there; the same waiter was standing behind him. My nephew called out to the burly waiter, “Aunty, can you lift me?” The waiter’s face went red. My nephew having grown with only girls and aunties around, was yet to master the masculine gender terms. So the rather embarrassed ‘aunty’ lifted our little boy and he was done with washing. We had just finished explaining the ‘aunty’ part to the poor waiter, when my lil’ nephew shouted again, “Thank you, aunty!” The waiter didn’t bother to come to our table again. Poor soul. - Lourdres Priya,Velachery

Spice Girl Pertly piaa opens up on life in Chennai, films and more. he’s naughty and nice, and full of life and fun just like the character she portrayed in her latest flick, ‘Goa’. We are talking about the young model turned actor, Piaa Bajpai who is back in Kollywood after her previous release ‘Aegan’. We catch up with her to find out more about her and the fun trip - Goa! How did you enter Kollywood? Well, I have been a model in Mumbai and have done over 80 ads, but acting has always been my first love from childhood. Even when my parents were against me going off to Mumbai from small town Itawah, I knew that this is what I wanted to be doing. So I put up against all odds and made Mumbai my home. When an opportunity came along to work in ‘Poi Solla Porom’ thanks to director Vijay, I grabbed it with both hands.

he would call me soon. I never asked for any details at all since I was so thrilled. I knew it was an excellent production and a great director and team to work with. I am so happy my character was well received and appreciated.

How was it shooting for the kissing scene? Well, Jai and Venkat would tease me saying we were going to do rehearsals for it and I was shivering with nervousness! But we finished it in about three takes. It was my first screen kiss and since the team was friendly we didn’t feel uncomfortable. How was it working with Ajith in your second film? It was mind blowing and I still can’t believe it! I hope I will get an opportunity again! I remember there was one scene where I had to run up to him and catch his collar and shout at him. I was so nervous about it! But Ajith sir made me really comfortable and asked me to go ahead and do the scene. He is such a down-to-earth person. What’s your next film? It’s ‘Bale Pandiya’ opposite Vishnu of ‘Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu’. It’s directed by Sidharth and produced by AGS Entertainment and I am really looking forward to the release.

How did you bag the role in ‘Goa’?

It’s very interesting! I was looking for good offers post-’Aegan’ when one day I got a call from director Vijay. In fact I was sleeping at that time! He told me that Venkat Prabhu is looking for a girl for ‘Goa’ and that
