A Quiet Revolution A manifestation of modernism and posh lifestyles with a touch of tradition, it is a paradox in itself. This week, we continue to walk down the lanes of Adyar. preading an aura of worldly charms and holding the curiosity of the young and old alike, the vivacious Kasturba and Indira Nagars give a sense of dynamism to Adyar. Standing out among the other locales, they proudly withhold a multitude of outlets, making one wonder if it is a miniature adaptation of T.Nagar or Purasawalkam. As we walk along the Kasturba Nagar 3rd main road, we might easily get fooled by the serene atmosphere, for, it bears the most pleasing- to -the -eye homes in the streets within, while covered up by a host of retail outlets. The first one you’d notice is the Sony showroom. Tall standing and urbane, it gathers quite some techie crowd. Adjoining it are the enticing eatery outlets, Mary Brown and Pizza Hut. Trying hard not to let my tummy take control of my senses, I walked ahead to bump into a pack of big and small shops such as Health and Glow, GR Opticals, a Handloom showroom, Nalli Silks, Afton, the health and fitness equipment showroom and a bunch of medical and grocery shops. Mr. Sharma, a resident says, “It’s a multifaceted area. In spite of the presence of so many shops, it strives to remain as one of the most pollution-less and trafficfree places.” You can also find another

Moving further, at an intersection where the road splits into two, on the right, you can spot the popular hangout, Cafe Coffee day. Though lately a number of cafe outlets have been set up across the city, this joint never ceases to entice its dedicated customers. On your left, you can spot the Hero Honda showroom

sporting the latest in’s and other beguiling bikes. While both the crossroads lead to the Indira Nagar

Nalli

pizza joint - Dominoes and a couple of tasty eat outs and ice cream parlours to savour your taste buds. If the numerous eat outs are indicating that it’s time to revamp your wardrobe then fret not. Head directly to the Body focus at the 1st main road. It offers simple ways to tone your body at the most reasonable prices. As for those who love to deck up the natural way, they can head directly to the Green trends Unisex saloon located at the 2nd cross street.

with ample greenery surrounding it. The Indira Nagar Park, situated on the Second main road, is the home for cheerful birds. Morning walkers, joggers, kids and other moms with updates

..............................................................................................

Pulling out extra dough from your daily share, the Maverick gym near the junction gathers quite a lot of crowd from this locale. The popular Hindu Senior Secondary School is located near the park. With almost every need and want available at a stone’s throw away, the tenants charge a bomb with the house rents! If you’re an ardent health freak then head to the Cholayil Sanjeeevanam on Indira Nagar First main road. This is a place committed to offer natural living and healing solutions. In addition to an Ayurvedic Spa that functions from the same premises, there is a vegetarian health restaurant. The special item here evanam is ‘Rajakeeyil Sanje y la o h C am’, the king of natural foods, priced at Rs.180. Rendering itself to be a reflection of the new era, Kasturba Nagar is one of the new south neighbourhood housing colonies to be set up in Adyar during the 1950s’ . . It has since seen marvellous developments over the years with high rise buildings and establishments. Nevertheless, these two areas as mentioned earlier are the hub of Adyar.

area, the one on the left again beholds the new eat out, Mocha Mojo and the multi speciality hospital, Padmapriya hospital which has been taken over by Global Hospitals. Indira Nagar as such portrays itself to be a very calm place

on the latest gossip, take immense pleasure in spending quality time here.

The Spell of the Unknown Of stories untold, of lands beyond, behold the face of mystery and magic - D’Hut

4

he wooden wind chimes blow gently as you enter, their music adds on to the surreal experience you feel as you step into D’Hut -the small store near Axis Bank off the ECR road. From the wooden croaking frog to the huge pair masks from Africa, everything here seems to have a little story. Even as the sheer presence of these exotic creations enchant us, Reshuma, the owner of this unique space gets into the details of each piece, adding more meaning to our chance expedition. She picks up a comb made of ram horn and explains, “This one is from China. For Chinese women, knowing to hold a tea ceremony and sporting a beautiful long hair are essential qualities to be sought after. They believe that their hair grows long if they use combs made of ram or ox horn!” We then move on to a culture lesson from Ghana, pointing to a huge pair of wooden masks, she says, “these are used for wedding ceremonies as a symbol of fertility.” When it comes to masks, the story doesn’t end here. They have Chinese oprah masks, Bairava masks, circular masks from Ghana, the crocodile shaped ones from Indonesia and lots more ( we lost count after some time). The Batik masks though seem to be the favourite among visitors. She then informs us that they have another full fledged outlet in the second floor, our surprise turns into ecstasy as we walk into this exotic space. Tabuman doll from Papua New Guinea welcomes us with its shell eyed charm, Reshuma explains its seemingly stern face, “Well, it is supposed to protect the men from evil female spirits!”

Keeping a safe distance from Tabuman, we then step in to notice a bundle of sticks lying in a corner. Noticing our latest object of attention, she picks it up and turns it down. Voila! We hear the rain starting off in a drizzle and ending in a heavy downpour. Reshuma smiles and explains,”these rain sticks are from Indonesia. It is an aboriginal tradition used to call the rain.” We then move on to see the smiling Budhas from Srilanka and their ‘not so serene’ neighbour mudman from Papua New Guinea. It is believed that the mudmen were beaten in a tribal battle, they later covered themselves with mud and frightened off the enemy with their scary presence. Our little friend here did scare us in the first glance but he seemed more friendly after a while. There are many such stories to be told, the last one hour we spent here was almost like a treasure hunt sans the map. If you want to know what it is to belong to another world, here’s your chance. Come, behold the trail of the forgotten traditions. - Catherine Gilon

The ‘Unity’ Tree This unique wooden carving (shown in the picture) is a must-have wooden marvel. Hand carved from a single piece of wood, this piece is a symbol of unity. It is usually depicted by the entanglement of three or more figures. It is surprisingly lightweight, foldable and definitely a conversation piece. The wood for the unity is taken from the roots of different baobab and blackwood trees throughout Africa. Only the most accomplished artisans can create these carvings, since they have to make it out of one single piece, without breaking or cracking the wood. The unities are treasured in Africa as the symbol of love, family bonding and unity in their society. They are sought after throughout the world as they add a very unique charm to the home they are brought to. These wooden carvings can even double up as holders apart from acting as a piece of mystic beauty.

t is estimated that about 78% of the gold consumed each year is used for making jewels . Gold symbolises status , beauty, and accomplishment. Today no other metal holds such a prominent place in our society as does Gold.. ‘Gold can make its way through the midst of guards, and break through the strongest barriers more easily than the lightning’s bolt.” This was said by Horace, the Roman poet. Gold is preferred over even government bonds in view of the fact that it is the safest form of financial security .It is reported that Indian households collectively have at least 40,000 tones of gold while even the RBI has only 600 tonnes. Even today, the status of a family is governed by the amount of gold it possesses. No wonder, it is the main item that a bride gets as asset .For people in North India, the new accounting year starts on Deepavali day and every family buys some gold to invoke the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.

centres have the required infrastructure for assaying and hallmarking , in addition to facilities for security and safety of the same.

As for national gold reserves, most gold is owned by the USA followed by Germany and the IMF. But in terms of jewellery India is the largest repository . It is on record that gold has been in use in India for thousands of years and thanks to its beauty and nobility, it is worshipped, considered as Goddess Lakshmi.. Use of ornaments made of gold varies from region to region and ‘solah sringar’, ie., sixteen types of body adornment, are made even today.

jewellery. Since the launch of the scheme, over 6584 gold jewellers have been licensed by BIS and over 571.82 lakh jewellery items have been hallmarked. Jewellers get the ornaments stamped and such hallmarked jewels are charged Rs100 more But hallmark does not mean that the gold is 22 carat since such mark can be done even for 14,18 and 20 carat items So how will one ascertain a 22- carat jewel? There are certain marks to find out the purity. The first is BIS symbol. Then comes the number - 918 stands for 22 carat, 585 for 14 and 750 for 18. The next three letters show the name of the hall marking centre.Next comes the code -- the letter ‘K’ indicates the year 2009 and ’L’ for 2010. Then the shop emblem is given. To read all these, a magnifying glass may be required ( it is available with all jewellers.)

Since pure gold ( 24 carat ) is too soft and cannot withstand stresses, goldsmiths started alloying gold with other metals such as copper, silver, and even platinum to give the required strength and durability. Since then ornamental gold has become an alloy of gold with one or more other metals. How to know that the jewels displayed at a shop are made of 22 carat gold. There are arbitrators’ shops run by the Jewellers Association to weigh ornaments and its weighment is accepted but how to ascertain the purity ? Therefore, the Bureau of Indian Standards introduced Hallmarking of Gold jewellery in April 2000 with the objective of providing third party assurance to consumers on the purity of gold or its fineness, promote export competitiveness for the product and develop India as a leading gold market centre in the world. The scheme, formulated under the BIS Act 1986, is voluntary in nature and is operated through a network of regional offices of BIS all over the country. Under the scheme, a jeweller has to obtain a licence from BIS to get his jewellery hallmarked from a BIS recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. The scheme does not grant self-marking rights to jewellers. The hallmarking centres are recognised by BIS based on a laid down criteria, after ensuring that the

A BIS press note says that till March last, 137 hallmarking centres in different parts of India have been recognised for certifying gold

Purchasers of hallmarked jewellery can get their jewellery tested from any BIS recognised Assaying Centre. In case a hallmarked jewel brought by the consumer is found to be of lesser purity than that marked on the jewel , the testing charges would be refunded to the consumer by the centre which had hallmarked the jewellery and the jeweller will be obliged to replace the jewel . A scheme for setting up assaying and hallmarking centres with Central assistance was launched during the Tenth Plan in 35 selected districts on a pilot basis. Under the scheme, selected applicants was given one time financial assistance @ 15% of the cost of machinery and equipment, subject to a maximum of Rs. 15 lakhs per centre. For locations in the north-east and special category States namely Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal however, a one time financial assistance @ 30% of cost of machinery and equipment, subject

to a maximum of Rs. 30 lakhs per centre would be admissible. To ascertain the quality of gold jewellery being sold in the country, two market surveys on non-hallmarked gold jewellery were conducted by BIS during2001 and 2006. In the survey conducted in 2006 it was found that out of the 162 samples drawn from 16 cities, 146 samples (90.1%) were found falling short of the declared purity. The average shortage in purity was observed to be 13.51% and highest purity shortage was 44.66%. In Delhi, Pune, Madurai, Kanpur, Jaipur and Chandigarh all the 10 samples collected failed the purity test. The findings of the survey are being used for creating consumer awareness by BIS and Department of Consumer Affairs through advertisements and other awareness programmes. OTHER USES: Do you know that gold is put to a varietyof other uses? Almost all electronic consumer items such as mobile phones, computers, and flat screen televisions contain a small amount of gold, which is critical to the reliable and efficient functioning of the equipment. The chips and contacts found in a car’s ABS system contain gold, as does the electronics controlling the inflation of car airbags in the event of a crash. Smoke detectors, routinely used in millions of households to protect against fire, contain a gold alloy placed between layers of another metal. Gold is used in brazing alloys used to join

certain components in aero engines and in some medical implants gold is the metal of choice. It is fair to say that without the use of gold in all these products, they would be much less efficient and reliable than they are now. Besides these, around 60 tonnes of gold is used every year in dental restorations like bridges and crowns. Gold is the oldest dental restorative material, having been used for dental repairs for more than 4000 years and is considered by many experts to be the best available material Coming back to the main subject, here are a few tips : *Buy hallmarked jewels only, *Insist on a bill/ receipt for the item purchased since tax on jewels is only one per cent( for a jewel costing Rs25,000 you will pay only Rs250) *The bill will give legal protection in case of a dispute,(some take a hand written estimate to evade tax, but this will not help) *If the ornament is studded with stones, tell the jeweller to mention in the bill the weight of gems and gold and the price of each separately. – Correspondent

Hatch me if you can!!! F

or luxury, we have the sedans and SUVs; for economy we have the small cars. Hatchbacks are for everyone. They have a major share in the Indian automobile market. This is evident as we see almost all the four-wheel majors investing heavily in the hatchbacks. Being a rapidly growing industry, Indian automobile market is the target for the International brands around the world to launch their products and get a good bite. Here’s a forecast on what to expect from the legion of cars in the year 2010. While the downpour is for sure, the packages they come in, give us a lot to look and grab for.

Renault Sandero: Leading the race to hit the markets is the Sandero, from the French makers Renault in collaboration with Mahindra. To be built on the Logan platform, the Sandero will have both petrol (1.2ltr) and diesel (1.5ltr) versions. Priced at Rs.4-5 lakh, the low-cost Renault hatchback has the ‘best in market’ comfortable quotients as for as the shoulder and head rooms are concerned. It is slightly bigger than the Maruti Swift with a storage capacity of 320ltrs.The Sandero is planning to be on the roads in mid 2010.

Fiat Bravo: A luxury hatchback is what Bravo is, going upwards of Rs.15 lakh. Fiat would be launching Bravo not to promote sales figures but to popularise the brand image of Fiat. Fiat Bravo scores high not in its price tag alone. The car can shell out 150 bhp at 4000 rpm, with its 1910cc engine. A release in mid 2010 is expected.

BMW Mini: The plans for launching the three door luxury hatchback Mini got delayed from the year 2007 by the premium car makers BMW owing to the extensive investment. But 2010 could be the year for the Mini, which will be the first small car by the German automobile giant. Mini it may be called but not so in features. BMW has marked every aspect of this junior with luxury. With a late 2010 release, BMW Mini carries a hefty price tag of Rs.20 lakh.

Ford Figo: Figo will be the new face of Ford in 2010. Coming in two engine options, DuraTec Petrol 1.2ltr and DuraTorq Diesel 1.4ltr, Ford Figo shares the looks of Fiesta & Ikon in the front and reminds you of Fusion in the rear. Figo, to be launched in mid 2010, is priced at Rs.3.5-5 lakh and has competition from the likes of Maruti Ritz and Hyundai i20. Ford has recently invested $500 million in Chennai’s production plant to increase its production capacity, which proves that they are here to stay.

Volkswagen Polo: Volkswagen will introduce Polo in early 2010. The Polo, to be designed on a whole new platform, will have petrol and diesel variants. The final product will be the fusion of German engineering and domestic necessities. It faces stiff competition from Hyundai i10, Maruti Swift and Ritz and is valued at Rs.5-6 lakh. The car will be rolling out from the company’s new plant from Chakan, Pune. Volkswagen has invested around Rs.3800 crore for its operations in India.

Cars make a statement. They reflect your character. So a lot rides on your rides. Still drooling over the shapes and sizes? It’s time to rule the streets with your very own hatchback. Hatchy driving...!

CMYK

Not wanting to be left in the race, Skoda and Toyota would also be launching their own hatchbacks. Apart from the new entries, the hatchback segment will also see upgrades in its earlier models. With the Indian automobile industry going big bang, the range of options available in the segment is not limited.

Being healthy is the in thing and organic food not only helps the cause but also spreads a greener environment. rends change, styles change, and so do eating habits. Fast food, quick snacks and fizz drinks rule, gone are the days of three full meals a day and milk straight from the cows’ udder. Most of the foods we eat these days are not natural produce. Right from the pulses to the fruits, they all are grown with the help of chemicals and fertilizers and even genetic modification in some cases. The concern over the quality of food consumed has caused the resurgence of the old school farming, this time around in the name of organic farming. The soil is not fed with chemical additives and the animals are reared the natural way.

Organic food is healthy and natural and hence tasty in the true sense. In the longer run, it helps the eco system and its balance avoiding soil erosion and pollution. Friends of the soil like the earthworms and other micro organisms are allowed to thrive and this helps the crop produce too. Organic farms aim at producing a variety of crops and thus balance the eco system too. The awareness among people about can-

cer and heart related diseases have created a shift of focus and healthy lifestyle has caught up among youngsters and the old respectively. “The response for organic food is from different age groups. Older people prefer the food because it is similar to what they had consumed as children and youngsters are aware of the scientific implications. However the main challenge to us has been to spread awareness.” Elucidates Radhika Ram Mohan, Trustee, Restore. Restore is a non profit organisation which sells a wide variety of organic food ranging from pulses, millets and rice to condiments, located in Adyar. ( 22/10, 2nd main road, Kasturba Nagar, Adyar) You might wonder if you will enjoy the variety you get in supermarkets at an organic food stores, but trust me you are in for a surprise. Says Sandhya Srinath, the owner of Eco Nut, “We first started in Kodaikanal 16 years ago and in Chennai 6 years ago. Many people were unaware and used to compare our products with that of Food World and Nilgiris. We don’t use chemical fertilisers in our food items and our most popular sold items are

the breakfast items like cereals, granola bars etc. We sell 350 food items and they include rice and dal grown in Kodaikanal with only cow dung as fertiliser. We sell foods to cure many types of ailments including obesity.” “ The cost of these food are 10% more than the normal food you get in super markets, but organic farming as such is not expensive, marketing the product and getting people to buy it is the

difficulty. So when more people start buying organic food, the prices will automatically come down,” points out Ms. Radhika. A few pennies more for health is definitely worth it. You’ve heard it from us, spread the word for a greener and healthier world.

role with ease. Nayantara has a glamorous role as Tara, the niece of the judge and Aadhavan’s love interest. But chemistry seems to be missing between the pair, who somehow do not look quite right together on screen. Except for the protagonist and his target, the other characters do not make much of an impact. Rahul Dev as the villainous Dr Abdul Kulkarny and Shayaji Shinde as Aadhavan’s foster father add mayhem to the melodrama in typical Tollywood style.

Though the movie starts off on a promising note, the second half drags a bit and the script turns out to be a big letdown. The flash back does not really touch our hearts even with Anu Haasan doing a decent job as Nayantara’s mother. Surya’s portrayal as a 10 year old boy is clearly graphical in some scenes. The musical score by Harris Jayaraj was fairly enjoyable with the title song and the final song ‘Hasiliye’ being the clearly winners. The film too could have been memorable had it been little innovative. Strong point: Comedy Verdict: Predictable - Aishwarya

Enraged, Aadhavan (Surya) plots to complete his task by entering the home of his target, a magistrate (late actor Murali) and entangles himself with the large unruly family in the residence.
