ON SALE EXPRESS | OCT 30 - NOV 5, 2009
The striking third quarter Here we are at the other end of Adyar, near the MGR Janaki College, preparing ourselves for a royal welcome by the Shahenshahs of retail. very time I travel across the Thiru Vi Ka bridge, with fierce lions standing high and sturdy as pillars on both sides, the famous Adyar river and the discarded, yet serene broken bridge remind me of its scintillating history. It was on this very bank that the famous war between the Nawab’s forces and the French troops took place some 250 years ago. Moving ahead, after we cross the bridge to enter the greenland, ie, Adyar, the flyover welcomes you to explore the multi-faceted locality. This flyover gives a direct access to Sardar Patel road on a straight path and branches off to Dr Muthulakshmi Salai (LB road) on the left. Just before taking off on this bridge, on the left side is the famous Theosophical Society. Mere words cannot describe the aura it creates to every soul who takes a walk across this divine society. Its century old Banyan tree which extends over 40.000 sq.ft, the mystic Buddha temple, the splendid library which has a collection of over 15,000 manuscripts and the very deep rooted history it beholds is an asset beyond measure to the fellow Adyarites. Opposite to this world famous society, is the Malar hospital, offering world class health care. And, the first hospital to be set up on the banks of Adyar is the Durgabhai Deshmukh hospital, now known as Andhra Mahila Sabha Hospital.
A few steps down the lane, just as we cross the Adyar signal, right ahead of us is Hotel Coronet. Started 50 years ago, it holds an esteemed position in the hearts of its customers who have found immense pleasure in the food that they offer. Mr. Sridhar, the Manager says, “ Over the years, the kind of customers we cater to has varied widely. Though this area is fast developing in a metropolitan style, our services never fail to entice the outsiders.” Sharing boundaries with this well-known hotel is the Gokul Arcade. This mall, though not as historical as its neighbour, promises to be a one stop shop for all those who are on the lookout for moderately priced goods. Be it a trendy stiletto, a wholesome library, a designer boutique or a stationery store, this miniature version of Spencers plaza has it all! On the same road, lies the landmark of this place, the Adyar Bakery, which currently has 25 branches. Established in 1952, it serves over 250 items. Abirathiga, Food & Beverage Manager, says with an unflinching attachment, “Being in Adyar, we feel proud to serve the people here who are very loyal and live their lives with us. We even have customers and families who are with us since we opened. Adyar is our root.” Now that you are familiar with the roads that lie ahead, let us look back and walk towards LB road which holds a treasure trove of

You can spot the Archies gallery to your left, at the very end of the bridge. Following it is a row of shoes, hardware and medical shops. One of the very famous shops on this road is Mercy Electronics. Mobbed by a din of people at all times, you can find anything from cell phones, ipods, printer cartidges to batteries here.

Beyond the signal is the very prominent BSNL office. It is a landmark for many who explore the interiors of Adyar. It is conveniently surrounded by the very popular Adyar Depot, the serene Kurasani peer masjid, Vasantha Bhavan, the South Indian fast food centre and the enticing Cake World. You can also spot a wide array of shoe, accessories and jute shops. With schools aplenty in this area, it’s only obvious that the city’s two very well known book stores have made their mark here. Adyar book house and Kamal stores, located on either side of the Telephone exchange signal cater to the educational needs of school children and college students alike. But has their business been disrupted because of the rapid developments of tall standing shopping malls? Mr. Arjunan, proprietor of Adyar book house says with a nod, “ Yes, our business has gone down a lot over the years. Though there are not many new people coming in for purchases here, our age old customers are still loyal to us.” Well, nonetheless, it’s a pleasure to stroll along the busy streets and delve into an extensive shopping expedition in the city’s most happening locale. Before we indulge in further such explorations, why don’t you take a peek into the places we’ve mentioned earlier? For, we shall join you next week to see and experience the very popular Ratnagireeshwarar temple, the blissful Bessie beach, the enthralling road side shops and more.

Light life
ne candle lights up another, a hundred, lights up an entire hall and so does a chandelier. Born in the medieval era, chandeliers spread light in churches, palaces and down the years have evolved to illuminate your modern home. A symbol of the rich, chandeliers dazzle, shine and sparkle. It is believed that Galileo’s law of pendulum was inspired by the sway of chandeliers. Sit down, look up and get enlightened, literally.

Why we love Chenn S
hennai, a city where the old and new, the conservative and the modern, the traditional and the radical, the conventional and the unconventional, all co-exist harmoniously. Imbibing other cultures through hospitality and amicability, the city has seen several hundred families and individuals relocating to its cozy shelter every year. We spoke to a few families and individuals who have moved to Chennai to either study, or make a living or stay close with their beloved ones. And they all declare undeniable love to this city for its quiet, green, relaxed and slightly laid-back ambience. Feby Varghese, Sajith Menon, Queena Nanda, Nishit Chandra and Yifat Agarn, all have reasons to be here and love ‘Namma’ Chennai.
F
eby Varghese has stayed in four different Indian states and has spent a considerable amount of her life in North India. She is all praise for the city that has been kind and accommodative to her. Let us hear from this lady who proudly declares that she is a Chennai-ite too! Where do you love to hang-out in Chennai? Chennai is a foodie’s haven! I love my tea at the Oxford Cha bar, the South Indian food at ID, the authentic Bengali food at Annapurna and the rest of the times, I am pretty content with my cook’s food! Shopping haunt: Chennai has a gamut of options when it comes to shopping, right from swanky malls to T. Nagar or Sowcarpet. I generally prefer shopping at Shoppers Stop, Lifestyle and recently I have been shopping in a new boutique that has come up in R.A. Puram. Where do you buy stuff that you can’t do without? Chennai offers all that one could ask for!
Recently, I had gone for A.R. Rahman’s concert on ECR, where I witnessed a crowd going ecstatic over Hindi, Tamil and English numbers. There were a couple of Sufi songs and also some hip hop songs which captured equal adulation of the audience as they all proudly waved the Indian flag. I could sense the diversity and unity of the city. I acknowledge this as one of the most special moments in Chennai.

attlefield is set. Fighters are ready with their strategies. The number of players in the combat zone is not limited to any levels. And they just wait for the flags to go down. When the Telephone Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) releases the spectrum for the 3G technology, the battle will begin. The 3G war will take the rivalry of the Indian players to a new level. The fight is not limited to the domestic players, as international players like Verizon and AT&T are also taking part in the league. Leading telecom operators like BSNL, Airtel, Reliance, Tata Indicom and Vodafone are geared up to face the competition with unique plans and products. These companies are assisted by top manufacturers like Nokia, Sony Ericsson, HTC etc and new entrants Qualcomm, Haier, ZTE and many more. All the manufacturers are taking a plunge into their designs to introduce cost-effective 3g compatible devices that provide the consumers with a wide range to choose from. Warriors from across the world Qualcomm, a leader in mobile communication world over, already has set a foot in India. They provide modems for several mobile operators in the country, and when the 3G licence comes they are ready with unique plans. Qualcomm India, with its single chip solution for mobile communication, is all set to launch products that will be suitable for Indian market. High speed 3G communication devices such as USB modems starting from Rs.3500 and a PC-like internet access device are in line. They also plan to launch smart phones
based on different operating systems like Windows, Linux and Android with a reasonable tag. China based manufacturer, ZTE, with its stronghold in the Indian market with clients such as Airtel, Aircel, Reliance, Tata Indicom, Vodafone, BSNL etc. is planning a huge expansion by introducing its own range of phones of low-cost and then expand to smart

phones that work on Windows Mobile and Linux. ZTE is also making arrangements for the release of other 3G products such as data cards, modems etc. ZTE, backed by the public banks of China, have invested vastly and they are not ready to leave any stone unturned to get the returns. Just noted Market leader, Nokia, which already has a wide array of models in its 3G line up, is planning to come up with new designs. These new products will be aimed at affordability factor. Also in pipeline is Nokia’s 3G compatible netbook which was unveiled recently. Nokia will however not be the only one to introduce netbooks in India. Olive Communication, the parent concern of Haier Mobile, along with network partners Tata Teleservices, has launched its own netbook X701H that is powered by Qualcomm. With configurations such as 1GB ram, 160
HDD and a 1.6 GHz processor, you can pocket this one at Rs.23000. Tata is also introducing netbooks ranging from Rs.5000 to Rs.40000 that’ll target almost everyone. These notebooks are bundled with Tata’s already popular wireless broadband device, Photon+. With data transfer speeds multiplied manyfolds; 3G technology sure promises a different experience. 3G will take us to a level seen never been before in mobile communication. India, with its huge base of
3G
mobile communication, will produce mammoth results if the 3G gets going. This will provide opportunities for the telecom operators to cash in, with the 3G. But the problem with 3G technology is the investment it needs for its initiation. Network providers will have to spend a huge amount of money in the infrastructure of 3G. So no matter when the 3G kicks off, the response will surely rock the skies.

Trick or Treat? The Halloween spirit is quickly catching up in the city. Read on to get a few traditional trick and treat ideas!
H
ave you ever wondered why children go trick or treating? Well, the origin of trick or treating is still unclear, with many versions doing the rounds. One of the most popular explanations is that this custom began in Ireland where poor people would dress up in
scary costumes and knock on the doors of the gentry offering ‘protection’ in exchange for food. If nothing was offered a prank was played on them such as breaking a gate or letting chickens out. Trick-or-treating, also known as guising, which is over 1,200 years old, is a popular activity among children on Halloween especially in the USA and UK. Children usually accompanied by an adult, will dress up in interesting costumes and knock on each door for treats. Today, this practice has been socially accepted and whatever be your religion or whether you have children or not, it is expected that you should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters. Halloween continues to be extremely
popular with kids of all ages; Studies have revealed that 85 to 90 percent of U.S. children go trick-or-treating or engage in other Halloween festivities every year, and many adults also join in on the fun. The Trick Though it is celebrated only among the expatriate population in Chennai, many neighbourhoods in the USA have neigbourhood ‘block’ parties which are popular among young and old alike. Certain pranks such as soaping car windows and tipping over garbage cans are expected at these parties. Besides pranks and daredevil stunts, many collect money to buy food and medicine for needy children around the world. At Halloween parties, children play traditional games. One of the most popular one is ‘Pin- the-tail-on-the-donkey’ - One child is blindfolded and spun slowly and asked to find a paper donkey hanging on the wall and try to pin a tail onto the back. Another game is bobbing for apples. One child at a time has to get apples from a tub of water without using hands! How? By sinking his or her face into the water!
The Treat Though invented in Europe, Halloween has travelled across the globe and is celebrated even in the Asian belt. The treats handed out to children often include candy, gum and chocolates. Some parents have tried to hand out healthier food options like nuts and fruits, but research has shown that children do not enjoy them (obviously!). In North America candy apples (apples rolled in candy syrup and coated with nuts) is a popular dish. A traditional recipe of Ireland, which is still practised, is the barmbrack ( a light fruit cake) into which a ring, coin or a small item is placed and baked. It is believed that the person who gets the ring, will find their true love in the following year. So here’s the recipe and let’s all hope to find the love of our lives.
Happy Halloween!

Barmbrack (Irish Fruit Bread) Barmbrack is a tea bread popular in Ireland, especially around Halloween. It is best served toasted with a smear of butter and a cup of Irish tea. Method
· 2 cups strong black tea · 2 cups dried fruit (raisins, sultanas, currants, candied peel, etc.) · 1 cup milk, lukewarm · 1 packet active dry yeast · 2 tsp sugar · 3 – 3.5 cups flour · 1/4 cups sugar · ½ tsp ground cinnamon · ½ tsp ground cloves · ¼ tsp nutmeg · 1 egg, beaten · 1/3 cup butter, unsalted, softened · 1 tsp salt
1. Place the tea and dried fruit in a bowl and let it soak for at least one hour, preferably overnight. 2. Mix the yeast, warm milk and sugar together in a small bowl and set aside for 5-10 minutes to activate the yeast. 3. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar and spices. Make a well in the centre of the flour and add the yeast mixture, beaten egg, butter and salt. Stir with a wooden spoon to mix the ingredients and bring the dough together. Add a little more flour if the dough is too wet or a little more milk if it is too dry. 4. Remove the dough to a floured work surface and knead for 5-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth but still a little sticky. 5. Drain the dried fruit and knead a little at a time into the dough until all the fruit has been incorporated. 6. Remove the dough to a large, lightly buttered bowl. Cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap and set in a warm corner until doubled in size, for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. 7. Remove the dough to a lightly floured work surface and punch down to deflate. Knead lightly for 2-3 minutes. Form into a ball and placed in a buttered 8-inch cake pan. Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let it rise again until doubled in size, for about 30-60 minutes. 8. Preheat oven to 400°F. Place the loaf in the oven and bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the top turns brown and sounds hollow when tapped. Remove to a rack and cool. Serve with a spread of butter and a cup of tea.

- Das Auto olkswagen Jetta, the new kid in the block, is the first of the cars that the German carmaker has lined up to enter the Indian automobile market. VW Jetta was first conceived from Volkswagen’s best selling hatchback model, Golf. It has been
released as a two-& four-(sedan) and five-door (station wagon) model. Read on and find out what’s haute about it! Since its inception in the year 1979, VW Jetta, that has over 6 million takers worldwide (mainly in USA), has evolved both in size and power with each generation. Now the fifth generation Jetta is all set to storm the Indian roads. As a luxury mid-size car, Jetta has given another choice for the consumers who didn’t have many options rather than going for the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla Altis till now. This upper-class sedan comes as an all-rounder as far as performance, styling, build quality and features are concerned. The styling is simple and timid without any oomph factors, but that is what gives the uniqueness for this car. The design around the body compliments the car overall without any unwanted stick-outs. In front, the
car is much like a Passat, with the chrome grille having VW logo in the middle. Eyecatching LED tail lamps sport the rear of the Jetta. Not only the exterior, but the interior of the Jetta is also brimming with topnotch build quality. The instrument dashboard gives you all the necessary details. The LCD provides
trivia like distance travelled, average speed, fuel consumption and much more. The console is neatly laid, with userfriendly switches that give you the control of the car. Storage spaces are available in the instrument panel, doors and roof console. Jetta sports the typical three-spoke steering wheel that feels hard but one forgets about it when the wheels start

rolling. The seat upholstery is trendy and easy to the eye. Superior comfort is what the Jetta promises you. The wide, comfortable seats offer abundant legroom and headroom. Five persons can take a ride with much comfort, without any soreness. And to the rear, you have the spacious 527lt boot. Height adjustable driver seat gives you the edge of the view upfront. Jetta comes in both petrol and diesel versions. The petrol version, 1.6L, gives a max torque of 148Nm at 3800rpm while the diesel variant, 1.9L, gives a max torque of 250 at 1900rpm. The gearbox looks classy with 5-speed manual/6speed automatic (in DSG version). The handling and control of the Jetta is as one will expect from a Volkswagen, simply outstanding. Although the diesel engine handles like a toy in city rides in low revs, both the petrol and diesel are a treat to drive in highways. With impressive accelerating figures, 0-100 kmph in 12.2 secs for petrol and 11.9 secs for diesel, the Jetta can touch speeds up to 189kmph. Handling corners and bumpy roads also form the talents of this car. Fuel efficiency is the major are where the Jetta scores high, returning 14-15kmpl
for the diesel variant. The suspension is very efficient and absorbs the bumps with ease. The 16-inch alloy wheels with R 16 tyres provide fine traction for the road. The front and rear discs supply massive braking power. On a no-compromise policy, high level safety standards for Jetta is provided by 6 air bags, 3 head restraints, anti-lock braking system, traction control system, anti-theft warning system. With climatronic air conditioner, cruise control, multi-function display console, steering mounted controls, front center armrest, and RCD300 & RCD500 audio system with loudspeakers (from 4 to 10), Jetta is not less in its goodies. On the whole, Volkswagen Jetta offers German technological excellence with vibrant image designed to handle Indian roads. Diesel Jetta will be the choice as it scores over its petrol counterpart in fields like fuel economy, power etc. Volkswagen has made the entry, a grand one at that, and its here to stay as it had for generations.
