Noise Induced Hearing Loss When we are exposed to harmful noises, such as loud sounds that last a long time, sensitive structures in our inner ear can be damaged, causing noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). NIHL is a common sensory disorder, affecting tens of millions of individuals of all ages around the world. With increasingly frequent use of personal audio devices, the threat of hearing loss due to recreational exposure to noise is a real one.

young people worldwide could be at risk of hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices. Nearly half of all teenagers and young adults (12−35 years old) in middle- and high-income countries are exposed to unsafe levels of sound from the use of personal audio devices. To reduce the risk of NIHL, it’s important to turn down the volume of music systems, use hearing protection devices or reduce loud sounds to a safe level.

NIHL is cumulative, invisible, permanent and can be obtained from overexposure to loud noises. It’s cumulative because the damage can start when we are young and get worse over time. It’s invisible because it can happen without even noticing it, until it’s too late. And it’s permanent because we can’t “heal” our hearing. The effects of noise are often underestimated because the damage takes place gradually, and there are no externally visible changes such as bruising or bleeding. That’s why people have traditionally not valued the serious impact of NIHL until it’s too late. There is no surgical cure for NIHL. However, the good news is that once hearing loss begins, its progression can be halted by avoiding further exposure to loud sounds.

Researchers who study hearing loss have found that a person who is exposed to noise levels higher than 85 decibels for a prolonged period of time is at risk for hearing loss. Children are exposed to dangerous levels of noise on a regular basis and many devices that children use have noise levels much higher than 85 decibels. For example, a typical MP3 player at maximum level is roughly 105 decibels. That’s 100 times more intense than 85 decibels and is loud enough to begin causing permanent damage after just 15 minutes per day. Needless to say, listening to portable media devices at high volume levels (above 85 decibels) for long periods of time can cause irreversible damage. Surprisingly, according to the WHO, most countries of the world still have no legislation to control recreational noise exposure, either for recreational venues or with respect to the maximum output levels of personal audio devices.

Effects on Learning Further intensifying the serious consequences of NIHL, it’s been proven that loud sound exposure from listening to music in adolescence may significantly contribute to communication difficulties in later life. Hearing plays an essential role in communication, speech, language development, and learning. Even a small amount of hearing loss can have profound, negative effects on speech, language comprehension, communication, classroom learning and social development. Studies indicate that without proper intervention, children with mild to moderate hearing loss, on average, do not perform as well in school as children with no hearing loss. In young children, hearing loss impairs language acquisition and learning abilities. Anxiety and attention-seeking behaviors are also common in children exposed to loud sounds. The impact of chronic noise exposure in children is reflected in lowered academic performance and outcomes, as well as reduced motivation and concentration. Minimizing loud noises is also proven to be calming for children with autism, making volume-limiting headphones a viable choice for children with sensitive hearing and attention deficits. 8 - onanoff

Made to last as kids grow, the BuddyPhones WAVE is extremely durable and can be fully adjusted to different sizes. The headband is made of our specially calibrated polypropylene so it can be bent and pulled and won't snap. As an audio technology company, we combine our Nordic design sensibility with Chinese manufacturing precision to create a uniquely successful combination. To safeguard the strength of our brand, we securely control the entire manufacturing process for all of our products from concept to final production, including even the packaging. Being strategically based with headquarters in Hong Kong means we are close to our manufacturing partner in China. This also means we are able to monitor the production process to guarantee that our BuddyPhones and other products are made of the highest quality and from the safest materials. When needed, we are able to make frequent visits to the factory and maintain a mutual relationship with everyone involved in the production pipeline. To further guarantee quality, all of our products are certified by first-tier global testing labs, making sure they comply with all key safety and environmental standards like ROHS, REACH, PROP65 and BPA. Behind the Brand We sat down with Petur Olafsson and Yvonne Lo Mather to discuss their roles at ONANOFF and why they’re so invested in making kids headphones.

Why did you decide to start ONANOFF? Petur: I was running a design and product development company for several years with another Icelandic friend, Bjarki Gardarsson, when we decided to start ONANOFF with Yvonne. I had a lifelong ambition to design and produce functional, stylish and ergonomic technology products that empower safe usage of smart devices. Yvonne: I grew up in Hong Kong and worked in the US in hospitality with a focus on sales and marketing management. I was intrigued by the development process of BuddyPhones and since I had been friends with Petur since we moved back to Hong Kong, I knew that by joining ONANOFF I could realize my dream of building a brand that my kids would be proud of and love.

Behind the Brand

Where do you draw your inspiration for the company? Petur: I draw inspiration for the brand’s design from my Nordic heritage and the vibrant Hong Kong lifestyle. Yvonne: Being a mom to two active daughters helps inspire me to find solutions for other parents looking for safe audio products for kids that suit an active and urban family lifestyle. What led you to create BuddyPhones? Petur: It happened quite naturally. We noticed Yvonne’s kids were frequently using headphones without a limit to how loud they could set the volume and wondered about the risk this posed to their hearing. Yvonne: My kids were young and we needed headphones to keep them calm on our long-haul flights back to the US. The headphones we found were too loud, uncomfortable and flimsy. At the time, I knew Petur was working on designing headphones and I suggested he look into the children’s market. Petur: We found that statistically more than 10% of young kids have hearing damage directly caused by listening to devices with the volume too high. That’s insane! We were compelled to educate people about this risk and help prevent further hearing damage. We decided to create our signature series of BuddyPhones through ONANOFF, which just launched the world’s first waterproof and wireless volume-limiting kids headphones. What’s it like to work at ONANOFF? Yvonne: We’re a big family! We have about 20 people working for us globally, and we try our best to deal with all the challenges of growing a meaningful brand. With almost 50% of our staff are young parents it reflects in our management style, we want to make responsible decision with the best interest of our partners and for our next generations. We all wear many hats in our company and that’s what keep our job fun and exciting! A great place to learn from each other. Petur: We definitely keep the team busy designing, developing and selling our products to 63 countries worldwide. Our headquarters is in Hong Kong, but have operations in Iceland, Europe and the USA too.

ONANOFF is an audio technology company that takes its name from the most fundamental feature of all electronics- the on and off button. This name reflects the ONANOFF approach to electronics- pare down to what is necessary to create a successful balance between form, function and safety. There’s no question that electronics are a useful and integral part of daily life. ONANOFF adds value to the use of electronics by creating safe technology that protects users, giving ONANOFF a reputation for innovative problem-solving and simple, functional design. In tandem with creating safe products, ONANOFF’s mission is to bring awareness to the potential damage posed by the misuse of electronics and educate users how to limit this risk. What is a day in your working life like? Petur: Busy! But good busy. I’m a morning person, so I‘m normally at my desk by 8am, answering emails and requests coming in from overseas. As the day goes on, I move on to handling our current development and design projects. No matter how busy the day is, I break it up with 5-10k run that allows me to breathe and think a bit; it’s a sacred bit of time out of the office. Yvonne: It keeps me out of trouble when I have a healthy work-life balance. I’m frequently in the office managing the marketing and sales teams. It’s a vibrant role- in any given week, we could be arranging social media collaborations, planning photoshoots, organising a product launch or planning our participation in CES. It’s definitely an exciting job with lots of variety. Some days, I bring in my daughters (they love Snowy, the adorable office dog) and other days I make sure I leave on time to pick them up from the school bus. Thinking about the future, how would you like to see ONANOFF grow? Petur: I see us growing to be a global leader in safe children audio brands. We want to keep educating people about the risk of hearing damage caused by listening devices. Yvonne: I also hope one day my kids will join us in spreading the word of healthy hearing and develop more safe audio products that protect future generations.
