VARY YOUR VOLLEYS Most players practice one kind of volley: the kind that's hit right to them. If you want to improve your net game, practice the types of volleys you see in a match. Here are four you need to master: [1 J The low volley that dips toward your sneakers; [2 J the floater, at head level or higher-it looks easy, but players often flub it; (3J the stretch volley, which you'll find yourself hitting on passing-shot attempts; and (4 J the reflex volley that comes right at your chest, and quickly. For a closer look at these volleys, and the technique needed to hit them, visit TENNIS.com/yourgame and watch my video. -Jorge Capestany, USPTAMaster Pro, PTR, and founder of TennisDrilfs.tv
THINK SPEED, NOT STRENGTH
STRONGER
LONGER
When players go for a big serve, they generally try to muscle the ball. They tense up and often hold their breath when swinging. Instead of thinking about pummeling an ace, relax and move your racquet faster. Try exhaling as you swing and developing an easy, fast motion with a lot of racquet-head speed, not a tense, aggressive, hammerlike swing. Once you've mastered this, you'll hit your serve with more conviction and no longer feel like you're swinging so hard. -Feisal Hassan, USPTAMaster Pro, Regency Sport &,Health, McLean, Va.
