We were asked to undertake the enlargement and reform of a 5-star rural hotel occupying an old 18thcentury monastery located in Pollensa, on the island of Mal lorca. The clients wished to refurbish and enlarge the spa situated in the main building and to build four new villas on the adjacent land. The goal of the intervention was to form part of the landscape. It does not seek to occupy the territory but rather to build territory, create a large garden, a landscape in which to stroll. To avoid competing with the historic architecture and in order to make the most of the surroundings, we planned four villas that have blended into the stone walls of the ter races that make up the area’s farming landscape, creating a complex in which the construction and the green spaces have become symbiotic. The new villas are thus inserted into the last terrace at the foot of the mountain and enjoy the vistas over the vineyards. The upper level of the villas can be read as a garden that, extending from the main hotel building, reaches down to the farmland. On the lower level, each villa, opening onto the landscape and protected from prying eyes, enjoys its own private world. The project used the materials found in the surroundings. We could say that the project is made from stone, earth and light, all of it enjoyed in privacy. The enlargement of the existing spa in the historic building involved adding rooms with views of the landscape. Our greatest concern was that the solid-looking 18th-century building would not rest on a glazed base; large wooden per golas and vegetation blur the shine of the glazing and put it in the background. From the road the view of the old building remains the same despite the enlargement of the spa and the construction of the four villas. The great building continues to rest on its stone walls, just as the landscape is still made up of farming terraces and drystone walls.

Situated in a district in the town’s enlargement area built in the second half of the 20th century and consisting of a majority of constructions erected between the historic centre and the beach, this project resulted from working with the context, freely interpret ing the town’s architecture by mixing three references: the surviving vernacular, the one that persists between reality and fiction, and the one that is idealised by thinking that it is yet to come. The spaces, elements and domestic atmosphere of Conil, together with the town’s image as a tourist destination, are the starting points that define this building. The programme consists of four lodgings per floor, with each one occupying one of the four centrelines of the courtyard. Three of them are studios and the fourth one a two-bedroom apartment. All circulations run along open or semi-covered spaces. The courtyard and the roof, both of them fitted out, are spaces for communal use in which the idea of a garden was superposed on the architecture. This urban piece occupying the last corner plot available in the district is designed to fit into the domestic scale of the surroundings, essentially embodied in a volume of smooth, cutout white planes, underlining its identity in the powerful curvature of its chamfered corner. The curve, whose reference is found in the district’s earliest constructions although with a smaller radius and presence, rescues as well as invents a recognisable image for the context. The material work with the multiple possibilities of the colour white, blended with the powerful light of the Cádiz Atlantic coast, the very essence of Conil architecture, empha sise everything that this building seeks to be and to contribute, even its ornamental-style response. This project has paid special attention to the building’s energy needs and was committed to incorporating passive measures taken from traditional architecture combined with ac tive measures for greater effectiveness. In a holistic approach to sustainability, the use of local businesses and trades was favoured during the construction process. The commission allowed the authors to carry out the total design of the complex, including furniture, landscaping and even specific art pieces that textually express the qualities of this architecture, among them a collection of ceramic dishes made by Enrique Carrillo which are halfway between a traditional décor, a souvenir and the epigraphy featuring verses by poets who have praised the Cádiz light.
