MODERN MALE

ale cosmetic surgeries are on the rise. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons says 4,614 plastic surgeries

were carried out on guys in 2015 alone, with almost 1,000 going under the knife for eyelid surgery. That's up on 4,042 in 2014, with 849 eye surgeries - and 2,440 10 years ago in 2005. But while it's on trend for 'tweaks' reflects the way we feel in 2016 about full plastic surgery. It seems increasingly extreme to go for a full face lift. In fact, for men who are feeling that a good night's sleep and some eye cream are no longer cutting it, going under the knife at all is now unnecessary. We look at the windtunnel facelifts of the 80s and 90s and thank god we didn't have to be the guinea pigs for those pioneer doctors. Luckily, it's 2016 and for those of us who want to,

Luckily, it’s 2016 and for those of us who want to, we don’t have to go as far as surgery; there isn’t much that can’t be done with injectable treatments like fillers and Botox

a more masculine jawline they can be very helpful,' says Dr Tonks. Dr Vincent Wong, who uses Intraline filler for men in his London clinic, says: 'The focus should be on understanding the differences in how men and women lose volume in their faces, which is different. It’s about enhancing the male features while maintaining the masculine appearance.'

YOU CAN HAVE SOMETHING SUBTLE No one wants to leave their dermatologist looking like they’ve over cooked it. A puffy, shiny and immobile face is not the look you’re going for, I’m guessing. 'Some men want to keep some of their lines, which is easy to do because men generally have stronger facial muscles so sometimes more botulinum toxin is needed to create no movement,' explains Dr Zamani. Dr Zamani says she's seen an increase in men coming to see her in recent years, especially for injectable treatments. Like Dr Tonks, she says most of her male injectables patients want to look less tired or more masculine. 'I see many male patients asking for under eye rejuvenation to look less tired, which is also extremely common in women,' she says. 'I also get a lot of male patients asking for a stronger jawline and chin.' Do you have a question for Stephen we don’t have to go as far as surgery; there

AFTER

One thing Adrian wasn’t worried about, though, was having the mick taken out of him by colleagues for daring to have a treatment that might be considered by some to be ‘feminine’. He confesses: “I didn’t care what anyone thought about me going in for treatment, I was just really interested to see the effects, to see if it would improve the look of it and to see if it could improve the breathing. “It looks a lot better, too. I’m so pleased with it.” “I think it’s a fantastic procedure. You get a hell of a lot of rugby players who get their noses broken. I’ve got friends who’ve had their noses broken, some are squashed flat to their face, and they think there’s nothing you can do - but I’ve proved there is. I’d urge anyone interested to do the same.” To keep his nose looking straight, Adrian will need to go back for dermal fillers every 18 months, at a cost around £600. The procedure takes just 20 minutes to complete. He also has not stopped playing Rugby so may be back sooner but Vicki is really putting her foot down for him to stop. SkinViva’s Dr Tim Pearce, who carried out Adrian’s 30 minute non-surgical Rhinoplasty, adds: “We use highly effective and safe dermal filler called Juvederm Volume to reshape and alter the key points of a person’s nose without the need for invasive surgery. FEELING DEFLATED

Andrew, 42 from London, had come to us worried that he was losing volume in his cheeks and asked us what we could do to help. We had recently been very impressed with the results of the new male fillers from Intraline.

D

r Vincent Wong, expert cosmetic doctor, agreed to help Andrew and so we sent him in for a full medical consultation. Dr Wong said “Intraline for men is great and

can be used for contouring the face and mandible, improving profiles and strengthening male features. Exactly the subtle effect

7

he had in mind for Andrew.” After a full consultation to understand what look Andrew wanted and to manage patient expectations, it was decided that a very slight change was desired. The softly softly approach also allows for patients to ‘get used’ to their new look and tweak with minor top ups if required. Watch his story unfold here... Are you interested in dermal fillers? IT’S A THING! Brides aren’t the only ones who want to look their best on the big day – according to top doctors, a growing number of grooms-to-be are opting for cosmetic treatments before they walk down the aisle

men may choose blondes over brunettes, for example!” Now, Dr Bessam Farjo, who carried out Richard’s surgery at his Manchester-based clinic, is keen to help remove any stigma surrounding hair transplants in younger men. Dr Farjo, founder of The Farjo Hair Institute and medical director of the Institute of Trichologists, said: “Hair transplants are often associated with 50-something men who want to recapture their youth and look good as they age. Of course, this may be the case for many patients, but we’re seeing a steady increase in younger men – often in their late 20’s – coming forward to find out more. “Whether this is due to the rise of popular celebrities and footballers being so open about their own procedures, or simply a case of men being more aware of their looks, it’s evident that there’s been a real shift in mindset.” Dr Farjo is consistently at the cutting edge of cosmetic surgery. He performed the world’s first full beard reconstruction by hair transplantation in 1996 and, in 2012, he worked with former footballer Michael Grey on the first hair transplant to be streamed live on the internet in Europe. He also performed one of the first FUE hair transplant surgical procedures in Europe to be carried out by a robot on former England captain David Platt. He now

holds Europe’s only Certificate of Excellence for the Provision of FUE Transplants using the ARTAS robot. Dr Farjo added: “The results from the Tinder project suggest that those with a fuller head of hair are looked at more favourably by the opposite sex. The hair restoration industry is growing rapidly and constantly changing, so there are various options to consider and, of course, while surgery isn’t for everyone, it is the most appropriate choice for long-lasting, reliable results.” www.farjo.net

STOP STRESSING Have you ever noticed how ‘well’ people look when they return from holiday or leave a stressful job? It is a fact that stress is very damaging for the body and can actually accelerate the ageing process. We asked Dr Tiina Orasmäe-Meder how exactly does stress age the skin?

Q: What is the most common reason people visit you in your clinics? Contrary to popular belief you do not have to have issues with your skin or a ‘problem’ with ageing to visit me at my clinics. I am finding that more and more patients are investing in affordable professional skincare and sun protection than ever before. Taking control of your skin health should begin in your 20’s as a way to protect and maintain a youthful appearance. The majority of patients who come in are looking for anti-ageing treatments. They want to look like a fresher version of themselves, without looking “done”.

Q: What are your most popular treatments? Injectables are a perennial favourite, and body contouring with 3D Lipo is still very popular. People are much more aware now of the importance of effective clinical skincare, and treatments to improve skin quality and texture are also in demand.

Q: What is the treatment that is on the rise in 2016? Plexr is really popular as a way of getting rid of saggy eyelids without the need for surgery. And sexual rejuvenation for women is the hot topic for 2016 and there are many treatments to help with function and appearance and the O-Shot® is just one of the treatments I offer. Women are realising that there is something that can be done, non-surgically, to help enhance sexual pleasure, improve stress, urinary incontinence and also enhance the aesthetic appearance of their labia.

Q: What percentage of patients are men? Around 10% of my patients now are men. I have seen an increase in men seeking treatment over the last few years and more and more products are being developed specifically for men.

Q: What are the most popular treatments for men? Botulinum toxin injections, facial fillers, body contouring and skincare are popular. I have had an increase in my male patient cohort due to the P-Shot® which involves PRP injection into the penis and improves erectile function, increases size, and can treat Peyronie’s disease, a condition involving a bend in the shaft of the penis often due to trauma.

Q: If you could make everyone use one product to slow down ageing what would it be? Sunscreen! Do you have a question for Dr Shirin? Email us at ASK@totallyaesthetic.com or to find your nearest clinic simply fill in our online patient enquiry form www.totallyaesthetic.com/enquiry

Emma has the sort of skin that glows and is a fantastic advert for taking a more structured approach to your skin health and seeking out an expert as you would with other troublesome areas of your life. And at my initial appointment she asked me questions to find out what my current skincare regimen was, I was currently using a ‘cosmeceutical’ range of products that whilst helpful for pigmentation and lines wasn’t doing anything for the spots. She also asked about my lifestyle, diet and stress levels as this plays a contributory factor to triggering adult acne. I am somewhat of a sugar addict and also a bit of a stress head so those are areas I need to work on myself. After a thorough cleanse, Emma recommended a course of resurfacing treatments a bit like a chemical peel along with homecare products by a company called pHformula. With pHformula they aren’t peels they are resurfacing treatments using acids like those used in conventional peels but it’s the delivery rapidly into the skin that means there is no damage and therefore no peeling. That’s what makes them such a unique brand. The resurfacing treatment itself consisted of three different strengths of ‘acid’ applied in a thin layer with drying time between each layer. Whilst

FILLING IN THE GAPS WITH DERMAL FILLERS

4

Real reader reviewer Alison, 35 from London, offered to share her experience whilst having dermal fillers and we jumped at the chance to share with you. We asked celebrity favourite Dr Vincent Wong to help us and sent Alison along to Harley Street for her personal consultation.

D

r Wong has extensive experience in the field of aesthetics and has received several awards for his work. Committed to the highest standards Dr Wong has treated many high

profile celebrities and is sought after for his expert opinion. He has been featured in popular press, radio and television channels.

7

Only the very best for Totally Aesthetic Magazine. Initially Alison was nervous about her procedure and did not know exactly what to expect from the appointment. Alison asked Dr Wong questions such as: can I eat afterwards? And will I be able to lie down tonight when I go to sleep? The answer to both questions was yes and helped to put Alison at ease prior to treatment. After her full medical consultation, Dr Wong decided that Alison was a perfect candidate for facial dermal filler and he chose to work with Intraline HA fillers. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is the skin’s key tool in retaining water and its presence in the skin creates volume and elasticity. This is what we lose when we age. Dr Wong marked up the areas that he felt had lost volume with a temporary marker and he began his expert work.

10

Juicy Oasis is the ultimate boutique health and fitness retreat, providing an intimate, tranquil and luxurious environment in which to unwind, lose weight, get fit and indulge in health.

Sparkly eyes and radiant health shining from others spur me on. Tales of relieved pain, snoring, cat allergies, perfect skin are recited and mentally registered.

The proof is in the wheatgrass and passion fruit pudding, with Jason’s own personal story as testament. He tackled his asthma, psoriasis, eczema and hay fever and pounds of body

“Where on earth is my double espresso?” I have always required at least 5 doubles to kick start my morning. With a heavy heart and a ginger and beetroot shot, I make the crucial decision to relieve my mind of the brainwashing. Set in the depths of a conservation area without the signal to use my Uber app, I accept the reason I came. They say that everything happens for a reason. Well, quite frankly if I am meant to quaff large quantities of dandelion, chlorella, alfalfa, barley and oat juices – C’est la vie! I opt for the clear skin programme (primarily as it includes 5 Brazil nuts at “breakfast”). I chew on raw ginger with gusto and vigorously sprinkle Himalayan salt and cayenne pepper on the evening soup. Jason makes detoxing a delicious juicy dream. His spirit, enthusiasm and appearance could be mistaken for that of a man in his 20’s. The reality of the situation is he is 46, sorry Jason (it was bound to surface one of these days over a Lemon Ginger Zinger). The retreat offers scenic mountain hikes, spinning classes, volleyball, a 24-hour gym and saunas along with glorious yoga, juice workshops, out of the world massages and treatments. I met Karol from Monaco, who has dropped a cosmic 100 pounds on the regime in a mere matter of weeks.

JUICY CURE FOR A SUGAR

ADDICT

“Hello, my name is Chloe Jasmine and I am addicted to sugar! Friend of the magazine and all round good egg, singer, model and we think really should be an actress, Chloe Jasmine investigated Juicy Oasis for her cure – in an idyllic boutique luxury health spa situated in rural Portugal, far, far away from Michelin-starred restaurants, vending machines and the Waitrose chocolate aisle. is not a ‘spa hotel’ but rather a seven-day retreat journey designed to fully recharge every aspect of your mental and physical health. Rarely if ever, do the words ‘luxury’ and ‘detox retreat’ go together, but at Juicy Oasis Boutique Health Retreat & Spa the two have merged beautifully. The Juicemaster, Jason Vale, has served as an inspiration for my extremely health conscious and vegetarian family for the past 15 years or so, from back in the days when the popular perception of ”juicing” was commonly identified as a glass of pasteurised, “fresh” processed orange juice

Phototherapy or LED light therapy was originally developed by NASA to aid plants to grow in space. LED Phototherapy is clinically proven to treat a wide range of skin conditions, such as acne, pigmentation and ageing by naturally stimulating the skin at different depths depending on the colour of light used. It can help rejuvenate or resolve problematic conditions.

Claims to aid?

Phototherapy or LED light therapy was originally developed by NASA to aid plants to grow in space. LED Phototherapy is clinically proven to treat a wide range of skin conditions

 Skin Rejuvenation: fine lines, complexion and texture  Acne, problematic skin  Rosacea, redness and flushing  Hyperpigmentation  Inflammatory conditions  Accelerated healing

How does it work? Red light at 630nm (nanometres) stimulates skin rejuvenation, new collagen and elastin. Near infrared at 830nm is the most deeply absorbed wavelength and plays a part in healing and targets the inflammatory process, great for calming after treatments. Blue 415nm light is well known to be powerful against the bacteria that causes acne (P. acnes) – a photodynamic reaction kills the bacteria.

Is this treatment right for me? If you have any skin concerns then this type of treatment is worth a try. The versatility of LED Phototherapy is greater than many other advanced skin treatments as you can be any skin colour, age and even have most medical conditions and still be safe. The only condition is that I would err on the side of caution with epilepsy, due to the lights being very bright (consult your doctor).

THE SOUND OF

B E AU T Y

Ultrasound is a great way to quickly and safely get a great lift without any needles or downtime. Perfect before a party or just as a general pick me up! BY DR SARAH TONKS

M

any of us look in the mirror and feel like we could use a little lift. Sagging and tired looking skin can leave us feeling like our appearance often doesn’t match the

way we feel on the inside, or even if it does, its not something we would want to advertise to the world. Now we have many options to help ourselves feel fresher and brighter; from dermal fillers and thread lifts to chemical peels and laser there are so many methods available to help us achieve this vibrancy without the need for surgery. Ultrasound is one of the lesser known techniques available to get the results you might desire. What makes ultrasound so unique amongst this huge collection of options is its ability to target the superficial muscular aponeurotic system, or SMAS, which is the layer of tissue lifted when undergoing a traditional facelift. It does this without the need for surgery, without the need for any anesthesia, with no bruising, or swelling or down time of any kind and its completely non invasive, meaning nothing enters the skin except ultrasound waves. These ultrasound waves are the same type of ultrasound used when checking on a baby during pregnancy or looking at a problem inside the body. The ultrasound uses a special technique to focus the energy into tight beams which are able to pass harmlessly through the skin without damaging it, and they impact on the SMAS. When this energy reaches the SMAS it is deposited there causing the skin to contract and tighten. With my patients I use the analogy of putting bacon in a frying pan and the heat causing the bacon to contract. Perhaps not the nicest image, but you can certainly see why it would work! Ultrasound can be used on various sites on the face and body. The most popular area is the neck and jawline, and I have a treatment which is particularly popular before big events

50

50-51_Ultrasound_SarahTonks_SoundOfBeauty2.indd 50

04/07/2016 16:52

called the ‘Party Lift’ which focuses on this specific area. Other areas that can be treated are the forehead to lift the brows, the dĂŠcolletage for crepey skin, and skin tightening on the bingo wings, stomach, thighs and buttocks. On the day of treatment, when you arrive at the clinic there is no need for any anaesthetic, so no topical anaesthetic, no local anaesthetic injections as you would receive at the dentist. A jelly is placed on the skin to allow the probe to come into contact with the skin and the machine is activated. As someone who both performs ultrasound skin tightening, and as someone who has had it done, I would say that it feels a little like being zipped up from the inside. The treatment is over in around an hour and afterwards you can apply make-up and go about your day as usual. There may be a little redness after the procedure, but this quickly subsides. Results are visible immediately, however you will look your best at around 3-4 months after the procedure as it takes a little time for our bodes to produce all the extra tightening collagen which comes as a result of the treatment. The lift and tightening will last up to 3 years, meaning you really do get a long-lasting effect from ultrasound, which is amazing considering it is such a quick and painless procedure. You can combine ultrasound with other procedures, which I commonly do in my clinic, and I have found excellent results when combining with radiofrequency skin tightening in particular. Radiofrequency skin tightening targets the dermis of the skin meaning when used in combination with ultrasound, it gives a sandwich effect, lifting and tightening from the upper and lower layers of the skin. If you are in the market for something a little more invasive, then ultrasound can be very effectively combined with dermal fillers, which is fantastic if you are looking for significant jawline or cheekbone strengthening. For a real non surgical facelift, you can combine ultrasound with Silhouette soft threads, giving an

improvement like nothing else. Currently in the UK there are two ultrasound machines available in clinics. Both are operated by doctors only to ensure that the procedure is carried out safely, avoiding important structures in the face. Ulthera was the first machine introduced to the market, and more recently a device called Ultracel. You may have read reviews online stating that the procedure was particularly painful, however treatment protocols have now changed and since I

started using my machine. I have never had any feedback about the procedure being too painful.

D OCT O R MOL INA

Dr Molina told us “When we first saw Claire we did a full medical consultation and it was obvious that she needed to have a correction of a previous treatment. There were lumps all over the inside of her mouth, worse in the upper lip. The shape of the lip was still too large and uneven.” She added: “It is shocking to see how someone can inject a lip so badly, endangering a young persons looks.” Dr Molina found that the filler had the completely wrong placement, mainly submucosa (the layer of areolar connective tissue lying beneath a mucous membrane) and she found filler behind the muscle. Even after a year had passed the poor results and damage were still so obvious. During the first treatment with Dr Molina Claire had a ‘doctor only’ hyalase to dissolve the existing filler and then the doctor organised a follow-up appointment 3 days afterwards for correction treatment using a dermal filler. It has taken Dr Molina a series of gradual treatments over 6 weeks to make Claire’s lips look ‘natural’ again. Claire told us that she will now only go to Dr Molina for her future treatments and that everyone should make sure they do their research before having any treatments.

Whether you eat antioxidants or put them on your skin they are vital to your health. When applied topically or eaten, antioxidants do the job of reducing environmental damage whether it is from the sun, pollution, or just the very air we breathe. Antioxidants inhibit free-radical damage and research is abundantly clear that doing so has remarkable benefits for all skin types. Antioxidants Are Vital!

From cancer to ageing to illness or wrinkles – free-radical damage plays a role

SKIN COMBINATION

YOU’RE JUST NOT MY TYPE What is you’re skin type and how do you tell what you are? From dry, acne prone, oily to all of the above, we take a look at combination skin

What is Combination Skin? Combination skin occurs when two or more different skin types occur on your face at the same time. Typically, combination skin is when some parts of your face are dry or flaky, while the centre part of your face, nose, chin, and forehead (called the T-zone) is oily. Combination skin can also describe conditions where wrinkles and breakouts or rosacea and dry skin are present at the same time.

What Causes Combination Skin? A variety of factors contribute to combination skin – sometimes it is just genetics. When it comes to combination skin, the causes and combinations are a little bit different for everyone. Generally, the areas around the nose, chin and forehead have more active oil glands than other parts of the face. Some people have rosacea and dry skin and others have blemish-prone, flaky, inflamed skin. Another common cause of combination skin can be a result of the very skincare products you are using. For example, if you are using products that contain irritating ingredients, they can stimulate oil production in the T-zone area and at the same time create more dry skin and redness on the rest of the face. Voila! You have taken your relatively normal skin and made it combination. You may also be using moisturisers that are too emollient, making your skin feel oilier and clogging up pores. All the products you use have to be appropriate for the different skin types you are

experiencing – even if that means using different products on different parts of your face.

Which Products Work for Combination Skin? Basically, those with combination skin need products that don’t make matters worse. It is critical to only use well-formulated products designed for the mix of skin types you’re dealing with. To understand why you have combination skin and if there is anything that you can do to improve it, we recommend a professional skincare consultation. Is it just us who finds this bizarre? With so many amazing, qualified, talented cosmetic doctors and nurses out there, why are there still celebrities who have over-inflated lips, plumped up chipmunk cheeks and other really obvious aesthetic enhancements? Indeed, they make the idea of trying an injectable dermal filler quite scary for the average person in the street. For the men and women still considering their first injectable filler, knowing which products are reversible and which last is key

I don’t believe that tackling ageing or getting perfect skin is related solely to what you put on the outside of your body. It is also about what you put inside your body, as deep down inside the gut is where real ageing begins Note from Dr Nigma: Since writing the book, Reverse the Signs of Ageing, it has a bestseller in its category on Amazon. The response to the book has been incredible and I have been busy following up with press internationally and here in the UK. I am getting emails and Instagram messages from people who have read and implemented the plan in the book and who have not only reversed the signs of ageing, but they feel so much better and happier. Nothing could fill my heart more than to know that I am able to reach out to more people than just through my clinic practice through my book. I have also created a probiotic because I couldn’t find the right one out there to fulfil my needs and my patient needs, so I created a probiotic that has a strain called the DDS 1 strain, which is one of the best researched probiotics out there. I combined grapeseed extract in the probiotic to increase the absorption of the probiotic in the gut lumen and also so that the skin and the gut have antioxidant support. Find out more about Dr Nigma and get your copy of Reverse the Signs of Ageing from www.healthydoc.com

should be included in the price you pay.

How long does it last? The effects slowly diminish over a 3 to 4 month period, after which time your muscles will have regained all their strength. Some will get longer-lasting results but this isn’t predictable.

Will I look worse once it’s worn off? No, during the time your muscles have not been creasing up the overlying skin, your skn will have had a chance to recuperate and will look better, not worse. Think about a leather jacket that you wear every day and is getting creased – hang it up for a few weeks and the creases will be improved.

Where should I look for a good practitioner? Only those able to prescribe medicines (e.g. doctors and some nurses) or those being supervised by a prescriber are allowed to offer treatment. Even then, a medical professional may only have had a single day’s training yet be in control of your facial expressions for months. Do your research and look for someone with good experience – ask how long they’ve been treating and how many they’ve done. A famous plastic surgeon or dermatologist may not necessarily be an expert in botulinum toxin treatment. Don’t get lured by heavily discounted treatments or places where the practitioner only visits once in a blue moon. Do you have a question for Askari Townshend? After having my son a year ago all my Botox and fillers had completely dissolved and 18months later I looked a haggard version of my previous healthy self post-baby lull and we both agreed the difference it can make to your confidence looking back in the mirror to see a rejuvenated version of you. Michelle had been treated by Dr Wong on Harley Street and I have been treated by Dr Shirin Lakhani at her clinic in Kent. Why do I mention our doctors? Because having a talented aesthetic doctor and a great quality product makes the difference from you going from looking tired and worn out to rejuvenated and natural! Yes natural is the key, even with fillers. When fillers and Botox are not done well they can look terrible and have awful consequences like my friend Abi Clarke (former Towie personality) had to contend with. So the moral to my first column is don’t feel bad about becoming the best version of you but make sure you go to a respected doctor that uses high quality brands like Juvederm, Intraline and Restylane. Then make sure you ask to see their before and after patient pictures, and if you see natural-looking results then go for it. You can check out my interview with Michelle on our YouTube page. Here’s my before and after pics after being treated by Dr Shirin Lakhani. In the next edition I will be bringing you some more fab treatment tips and reviews. What is Hyperpigmentation? Brown, red or pink, small or large, clustered or diffused, hyperpigmentation is a darkening of the skin due to higher than normal levels of melanin. Any part of the skin that is darker than the rest is hyperpigmented, no matter where it occurs. The most important thing to do is wear sunscreen - even if you don’t see discoloration on your skin, you should protect it from the sun with a professional SPF to lessen your chances in the future.

Types of Discoloration and How to Treat Them  MELASMA Light to medium brown in colour, this pigmentation occurs on the cheeks, sides of the face, upper part of the nose, forehead and above the lip. Melasma can be treated with: hydroquinone and Retin-A; salicylic, lactic or glycolic acid peels; Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) plus vitamin C; or Cosmelan. (Melasma is hard to treat because of its potential to reoccur.) Try www.obagi.uk.com  SUNSPOTS (AKA AGE OR LIVER SPOTS) Light to dark brown in colour, sunspots can appear on the face, chest and hands; and look like small, flat, dark spots. As their name

indicates, they are caused by the sun and can be treated with Retinol and IPL or fractional laser resurfacing. Try www.zo-skinhealth.co.uk  POST-INFLAMMATORY HYPERPIGMENTATION (PIH) Pink, red or brown in colour, PIH can show up anywhere on the face. It appears as flat spots and is caused by inflammatory acne. PIH can be treated with light salicylic acid chemical peels or red light and blue light treatments (if there is active acne). Try www.dermaluxled.com  FRECKLES Caused by the sun, freckles are light to dark brown or even red or black in colour. They occur on the face, chest and arms in the form of small, concentrated spots. For treatment try Fraxel or an Nd:YAG laser. Do you have a question about pigmentation and how to treat it? Ask one of our expert Dermatologists today ASK@totallyaesthetic.com

WHAT’S HOT IN PHOTOBIOLOGY?

SUN DAMAGE & ANTI-AGEING Paul Banwell, Consultant Plastic Surgeon and Skin Specialist, tells us what is in the sunshine that you expose yourself to every day. It has long been known that excessive sun and ultraviolet radiation is bad for your skin. However, whilst public health campaigns have focused on the dangers of the sun in relation to skin cancer, did you know that the sun is responsible for 80% of premature ageing too? Plastic surgeons, dermatologists, cosmetic doctors and scientists now believe that understanding this photoageing effect is key to finding solutions for sun damage and ageing and accounts for the huge growth area in photobiology medicine.

 External factors

 Prevention is the key

Whilst good genes may help keep you looking young up to a point,

Minimising sun exposure and avoiding sunbeds altogether is the best

HYPE OR TRUTH?

YOUR DOG’S VET CARE HAS MORE REGULATION THAN YOU DO The frightening lack of regulation in the UK means that only a minority of the general public are protected from self-appointed experts and unqualified practitioners, making unrealistic claims without recourse. It may seem bizarre but even doctors in the UK are not allowed to perform procedures on animals unless it’s a very specialist procedure and even then a fully qualified vet has to be present. Yet anyone, medically qualified or not, in any corner salon or front room can start administrating potentially harmful medical procedures on your face with long-lasting side effects. We asked our expert advisor, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Mr Ash Mosahebi his thoughts on the current lack of regulation in the UK.

 So why is it not the case in the UK? Mr Mosahebi said, “You have probably heard about the PIP breast implant scandal where a French implant manufacturer had been marketing industrial-grade silicone as pure medical grade. And the subsequent enquiry by the NHS medical director at the time, Sir Bruce Keogh, highlighting the lax and unregulated cosmetic industry in UK. This industry covers everything from Botox and fillers to chemical peels, lasers and cosmetic surgery.” He further commented, "In fact, a person having a nonsurgical cosmetic intervention has no more protection and redress than someone buying a ballpoint pen or a toothbrush." He also highlighted
