entered into Miss Earth and Miss Caribbean, she won again 2005 and spent another 6 months travelling around all of the gorgeous islands crowing the potential winners for the next year. You could say this is where she developed her eye for beauty that she now

uses in her cosmetic work. Although the time she spent back home and in the Caribbean was enjoyable, Dr Liesel was determined to make a difference to the poverty that is still suffered by so many people in Peru and partnered with her aunty, Frieda Holler (Miss Peru 1965) to co-found a charity called Angeles Peruanos to sponsor kids and help support their mothers to get them through school. She was very involved doing health lectures, medical campaigns and also holds charity events in London for funds to we send funds every year for our sponsored kids. Despite flying to every Caribbean island to crown winners, also entering Miss Universe and numerous offers of TV and film work Dr Liesel returned to medical school back in Sweden to finish her degree and gave up the life as an international beauty star. So by 2006 she was back in med school, began surgical training and moved to the UK in 2008 and went on to have 2 beautiful children. Maybe then, not the person you would think to still work a 24 hour shift in the intensive care unit of an NHS hospital which she currently combines with aesthetics at the heart of London’s Mayfair. She is now focusing more on her passion for aesthetics and she loves balancing this with her life as a mother and wife. Dr Liesel is not like any ordinary woman I have met, more like a wonder women, yet remains very grounded, focused, family centric and caring – what more could you ask from your doctor! If you want to see Dr Liesel you can find her at Raj Acquilla’s Mayfair clinic and also the lovely Aesthetics lab in Primrose Hill. Why not fill in our online patient

BEAUTY TECH Wendy Lewis reveals what’s trending across the pond from IV vitamin drips to stem cells for hair loss

I

n America, the old want to get young again and the younger want to stay young. Fortunately, there is enough on offer to satisfy even the most discriminating clientele. You are what you eat, or in some cases, what you don’t eat. Young Hollywood is buying into the idea of clinics offering customized IV drips infused with vitamins, minerals and other forms of nutrients transported directly to the cells as a complement to oral supplements and a healthy (aka starvation) diet. Each IV treatment can be customized with select ingredients to target the individual’s needs. Aethern®

Advanced Nutrition Skin Beauty Program (Biorganic Pharma, Barcelona) entered the market with a new way to transform your skin from the inside out. Their innovative nutritional collagen-based formula created with 14 special ingredients in one drinkable 25 ml dose that is equivalent to swallowing 25 vitamin tablets. The system is launching at leading cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban’s new spa, Skin X Five, in the Pacific Palisades, and will be available only in clinics and medical spas. Many practitioners are now combining topical growth factors with energy based treatments to enhance the skin

rejuvenating results of lasers and skin tightening devices. The 3 product range from Defenage® (defenage.com) was developed by a PhD scientist and focuses on molecular specificity to stimulate stem cells that live in the hair follicles. Defenage products turn on the stem cell (your body’s own wound healing process) resulting in the creation of proteins from a young cell, and a slew of leading dermatology researchers are championing

this technology. Sciton’s HALO (halobysciton), the world’s first and only hybrid laser, is arising as the treatment of choice for glowy skin among the red carpet set. This novel system combines two wavelengths, ablative and non-ablative, to the same or different microscopic treatment zones to provide ablative results, with the lighter downtime of non-ablative treatments so it is customizable to precisely

target the skin damage that needs help. Halo combines deep dermal rejuvenation with epidermal renewal for a combined synergistic effect that takes years off a dull, sun damaged complexion in just a few days of redness and flaking. The FDA approved injectable drug from Allergan, Kybella® (mykybella.com), is getting a ton of attention for its ability reducing chin fat. It is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that breaks down fat. After a series of injections – as little as two and as many as six – fat gets dissolved and your jawline looks younger, slimmer and more defined. It works for women as well as men and is an alternative to liposuction without the surgery. On the horizon, Topokine Therapeutics that was acquired by Allergan, is working on a topical agent for the treatment of undereye bags. Applied to the lower eyelids once nightly, the experimental drug XAF5 penetrates the skin and acts on fat cells to shrink puffy fat deposits. But fat cells do have their place, and a new technology called Kerastem Hair Therapy (kerastem. com), says it’s on your head to grow hair. The method is CE marked and currently undergoing a multi-center clinical trial in the USA. It uses your own naturally derived stem and regenerative cells found in fat of the hips and thighs to treat female and male early stage hair loss. The holy grail of aesthetic treatments is a real cure for cellulite, which most women, even size zero supermodels, have. Regrettably, most cellulite

treatments have not stood the test of time and rarely come with serious scientific studies to prove that they actually work. The most recent cellulite solution is Cellfina® from Merz Aesthetics and it’s making a splash for destroying dimples with clinical data that shows duration of results of two years, the longest of any FDA cleared treatment to date. It is a clever device that treats the structural cause of dimples, the connective bands woven throughout fat in the thighs and buttocks that pull down the skin and create puckering. Cellfina works to reduce the tension so skin bounces back to a smoother surface with a few days of downtime. If you’ve got a scar, Stratpharma from Switzerland (stratamed.com) may have the answer. Stratamed® can be found in dermatologists’ and plastic surgeons’ clinics used for speedy healing of surgical scars. It can be used immediately after cosmetic surgery or laser treatments applied straight away like a liquid bandage in a tube. Wounds heal quicker and better, which means less scarring, reduced risks of infection, and a better cosmetic outcome. The first step is admitting that you have a problem; I am seriously ‘app-dicted’ and this one caught my eye. A new beauty app by ModiFace (modiface.com) uses a live video simulation technology that shows how skincare products will look on your own skin. Created by dermatologists, this unique face and skin mapping technology facilitates details of the skin to be analyzed and shown as life-like visualizations. How cool is that?

NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

A WELLNESS CHOICE OR WASTE OF MONEY? The British public spent over £750m in 2013 on dietary vitamin and supplements, of which multivitamins accounted for £138m and fish oils for £139m. With one third of the UK taking vitamin and dietary supplements is there enough robust evidence in favour of us taking nutritional supplements or can we get everything we need from our diet? BY DR JOHANNA WARD

A bit of the science:

A balanced diet:

All cells in our bodies need a few vital things to survive: oxygen,

In a perfect world, no one would need to use supplements. A balanced and healthy diet would be enough. But there is another problem. Over the last 50 years western food has become nutrient depleted due to modern soiling, intensive agriculture, fast crop growth, refining processes,

TRACTION ALOPECIA

This is one for the ladies (and gents) who add extensions or engage in tight hairstyles or braiding. Traction alopecia occurs when there is pressure on the hair follicles, due to the extensions and glue pulling on the hair follicles.

TRICHOTILLOMANIA This is a psychological condition that some people suffer from, where they have the habit of voluntarily pulling or twisting hair out from the scalp, eyelashes and eyebrows. It’s most frequently seen in children but does affect adults, too. While we would never advocate a transplant until the underlying psychological problems that led to this condition are well and truly treated, it’s often a positive final step on their route to recovery, as well. While there are a number of types of hair loss, it’s still not known why some follicles are programmed to have a shorter growth period than others – the gene bank of mum and dad, stress, childbirth, hormones or cosmetic procedures also impact the quality of your hair over the years. If you’re in doubt, it’s always worthwhile seeking the advice of a professional and have your concerns appeased.

Totally Aesthetic Magazine is working with Greg Williams of The Farjo Hair Institute to explore 4 different types of female hair loss with our readers and we will share their stories with you over the coming months. See page 18 to find out more.

Even jumping out of a plane to raise over £3,000 for Spinal Research. In all I’ve raised over £40,000 for vital research for a cure. This campaign is to show that we all need to fundraise & do whatever we can to speed up the process of a possible cure so that it will happen sooner rather than later!

LOREDANA’S STORY I was only 17 years old when I was involved in a car accident with my family which left me paraplegic. I am an active person with an extremely busy life, a graduate, I have full time job and is politically engaged but I don’t want to spend the rest of her life confined to a wheelchair so I decided to create the Cure Girls blog. I work very hard on a daily basis with the CureGirls and I spend a lot of time to raising awareness and fundraising so that it gets donated directly to research initiatives that focus on curing chronic spinal cord injury.

MARINA’S STORY At present I’m a student of psychology at the University of Bologna but at time of my injury I was a professional cyclist and had a promising career in Italian cycling. In June, 2010 I had a very serious accident during my cycling training when a car cut me up making me come crashing off my cycle. Since that terrible day my life has changed radically. I was taken to hospital with very serious conditions then went into a coma, I came out of the coma on June the 9th which was my 22nd birthday. Since that day I’ve been paralysed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair, because of a spinal cord injury. In spite of the many difficulties I face and the obstacles that a paralysed person has to face on a daily basis that doesn’t make me lose the will to fight in order to have my healthy, active life back. During the long period which I spent in hospitals and rehabilitation centres, which is still going on, I really discovered the pain of human cases that are even more dramatic and awful than mine. It is for this reason that with my family and closest friends I set up the non-profit Marina Romoli Onlus with the aim to support research focused on research into therapies able to cure spinal cord injuries, but also helps people under 30 under who have been involved in sports and have been victims of road accidents. We help them financially in order to help them pay the very expensive costs of therapies and rehabilitation. My charity has raised over 200.000€. You can help us in our quest to find a cure by contacting us, donating or supporting us here: Donations can be made through Marina’s charity called MARINA ROMOLI ONLUS here is the link: www.marinaromolionlus.org /en/support-us/donations Or via my website: www.LollyMack.com

WHEN GOOD SKINCARE

GOES BAD Just like food, cosmetic products and skincare expire too and when they do, they become ineffective and possibly dangerous by harbouring bacteria that can cause infection. Do you know how long your lotions and potions should last for and are you rubbing harmful bacteria onto your skin everyday?

to display a “best before” date. Manufacturers determine the appropriate shelf life based on the shelf life of the raw materials and internal stability testing. It is important to note that expiration dates are simply “rules of thumb,” and that a product’s safety may expire long before the expiration date if the product has not been properly stored. Manufacturers don’t take into consideration how the product is stored and used by the consumers. If a product has been exposed to heat, light or bacteria for instance, it will lose its

A Guide To Skincare Product Expiration Dates How long a skincare product lasts also

depends on how it is stored and used, so the following expiration dates should be taken as general guides rather than exact indications:

effectiveness and go bad sooner.

MAKEUP  MASCARA liquid or gel eyeliners: 4 to 6 months (always throw away dry/clumpy mascara – never add water or saliva to moisten it)  CREAM LIQUID OR STICK FOUNDATIONS OR CONCEALERS 6 months to 1 year  POWDER-BASED PRODUCTS 2-3 years  LIPSTICKS, LIP GLOSS, & LIP PENCILS 2-3 years

SKINCARE  MOISTURISERS CLEANSERS 1 year  TONERS 6 months to 1 year  BHA OR AHA EXFOLIANTS 1 year  CREAMS AND SERUMS WITH ANTIOXIDANTS AND RETINOIDS 9 months (these ingredients can oxidize when exposed to light and air and lose effectiveness)  FACIAL OR BODY up to 18 months  SAMPLE PACKETS: 1 day  DEODORANT, ANTI PERSPIRANT, SOAP 3 years  SUNSCREEN 1 year and never take your SPF away 2 years in a row! Products that contain water as one of the first ingredients have the shortest shelf life after opening because water encourages the growth of bacteria and other microbes. Also susceptible to bacterial contamination and breakdown from exposure to air are products that that contain plant extracts. Products made up of almost no water (such as powders) last the longest, because almost nothing can grow in these kinds of products. If your product is labelled “preservative-free” you should take extra caution, because without some kind of preservative system bacteria can flourish easily.

DOS AND DON’TS OF COSMETIC CARE Here are a few tips on how to prolong the shelf life of your products.

DO:

1. Always read the instructions carefully and take note of any warnings for use.

2. Wash your hands before applying makeup (especially if you need to dip your fingers into the container.

3. Tightly close containers and jars after use. 4. Throw away products that become discoloured, runny or lumpy, have separated or develop a strange odour.

5. Throw away products when the product labelling indicates. 6. Replace applicators frequently or use disposable makeup applicators.

7. Store cosmetics in a clean, dry place and not in extreme environments.

8. Scribble the expiration month on the product with marker pen to remind you.

DON’T:

1. Share your cosmetic products with others 2. Use water or saliva to moisten cosmetics or applicators as this might add bacteria or other germs.

3. Add water to dilute cosmetics unless directed by the manufacturer. This may make the preservative system ineffective.

4. Use eye makeup if your eyes are irritates or infected. Throw out cosmetics that were used during a period of eye infection.

5. Store products in the refrigerator. Skincare formulas are designed to withstand the average fluctuations in temperature, but not long-term heat or cold storage.

6. Store products in direct sunlight.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

AGEING IS A BLESSING It does happen to us all that ever so slow road to getting older but we can either choose to embrace it, nurture it or desperately try and stop it. We talk beauty, relaxation, non-invasive treatments and Broadchurch in our Totally Exclusive interview with beautiful actress, Sarah Parish and also find working out very relaxing. We are lucky to live in a very beautiful part of the country, in Hampshire, and there’s nothing better than a nice long walk there by the river with my husband, daughter and our two dogs to blow the cobwebs away.

FAVOURITE BEAUTY PRODUCTS? I am totally addicted to Face Matters Evening Elixir, which is a combination of Botanical Oils and Silica Gel and which makes my skin look and feel incredible - I’ve never found anything else that comes close. Every morning I use Dr Levy Booster Cream, which contains Argan Oil - it really works for my skin and feels like it penetrates the layers of my skin to give me a very moisturised feeling. I cleanse with Face Matters Anytime Cleanse, again it’s made with Botanical oils, smells amazing and stops my skin getting clogged up, which is so important with the amount of make-up I have to wear on set days!

FAVOURITE TREATMENTS? The LA Facial from LA Beautiful is amazing for smoothing wrinkles and tightening skin, what that machine does in an hour is incredible! It’s available on Harley Street and in salons nationwide. For body treatments the LA Tummy Tighten is a great treatment for firming up those parts of the body that sometimes exercise can’t reach, and it gets me beach body ready (as much

BOTOX PART ES Tupperware, Avon, Ann Summers - at home parties are common across the globe and millions of women (mainly) enjoy the comfort of socialising, sampling and shopping in a relaxed home setting. But nowadays you don’t have to look very far to find even a “Botox” Party, and it seems to be a growing trend. GREAT HAIR

Last year, Viviscal conducted the world’s largest hair survey completed by 6,759 participants internationally. The results of the survey show just how important hair is to a woman, regardless of age, ethnicity or culture. It is an integral part of a woman’s feeling of femininity and plays a crucial role in a woman’s confidence and self-esteem

A

ndrea Ferrari – Esprit Magazine Australia: “My personal experience of Viviscal Professional is very positive. In Spring 2014 I overtrained for running Sydney’s Half Marathon and made myself sick. I had malabsorption - I wasn’t absorbing the nutrition from my food. Alarmingly my hair broke off. It was

very unsettling to look in the mirror and see ‘someone else’. Being in the beauty industry I was being photographed a lot at product launches and had further reminders of how bad my broken hair, short fringe and spikey crown looked. Fortuitously I attended the Viviscal Professional launch and was heartened to hear the testimonials. Viviscal Professional’s haircare and supplement regime became my daily dose of hair self-help. I’m well into my second year of taking the supplements twice a day every day. I am delighted with the strong regrowth and health of my hair. I have naturally fine, dry hair and prefer an argan-infused/softening treatment hair care range but I am diligent about taking the supplement twice a day. That is the crux of the successful outcome. You cannot expect the supplements to change the texture of your hair that is already grown. It is about feeding the new growth. With poor hair quality, breakage and hair loss you have to think long-term to achieve new growth and nurture the fresh hair growing through. Try to think of your head as a pot plant! It needs daily TLC from what you are eating/supplements and then care on the outside. I have recently started using the new Thin to Thick Cosmetics Shampoo, Conditioner and Elixir. I love feeling the thickness of my ponytail – I grew it myself…well, with the help of Viviscal Professional. Don’t be disheartened that it is not an instant fix, it is longer-term but it does give genuine results you can see and feel. My hairdresser is also very pleased with the quality of the new hair growing through. I think the photos here speak for themselves.” For more information on Viviscal Professional, visit www.viviscalprofessional. co.uk, email, enquiries@viviscalprofessional.com or call, 020 7936 9871

 Hyaluronic Acid Facial Fillers In my practice I use facial fillers based on Hyaluronic Acid. But what exactly is hyaluronic acid? Often shortened to HA, this is a naturally occurring sugar molecule with unique water-loving properties. 50% of all the body’s HA is found in the dermal layers of the skin providing moisture and hydration, thanks to its unique ability to bind up to 1,000 times its own weight in

One of the key aspects of using temporary facial filler is its reversibility. Our bodies contain an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which naturally breaks down our own HA daily. The HA you find in facial fillers, such as the Juvéderm range, has been formulated in such a way that it won’t be instantly broken down by this enzyme, but slowly and naturally dissipate with time. And within the Juvéderm portfolio of facial fillers there is a filler

SKIN NEEDLING IS EFFECTIVELY USED FOR: Reducing scars (including hypertrophic scars) caused by acne, surgery or thermal burns Stretch marks Reducing fine lines and deep wrinkles Dyspigmentation e.g Melasma Tightening sagging skin. Collagen induction

BENEFITS OF SKIN NEEDLING Far lower risk of hyperpigmentation and scarring and safe on all skin types. Suitable for thin and sensitive skin. Little or no pain involved in treatments and can be well tolerated by patients. The protocols can be done on all areas of the skin that certain other treatments can’t for example; peeling or laser resurfacing. It is also fine to do around the eyes. The epidermis remains intact and is not damaged in any way. Medical Micro Needling has become a very talked about procedure with many celebrities choosing this method of rejuvenation due to its clinically proven results but also for the lack of post treatment downtime, which can be attributed to many other more aggressive protocols.

MESOTHERAPY

THE ELEXIR TO ETERNAL YOUTH?

We are all aware that ageing is an inevitable process, which none of us can avoid indefinitely. We may accept the fine lines, grey hair, our children growing up and leaving home and for some the prospect of retirement is the promise of an exciting new venture in our life’s journey. The trouble for many is the mirror’s reflection reminds us daily of the changing structure of our faces, the passage of time and the loss of our youthful appearance BY PAM CUSHING 46

amino acids. This cocktail of natural ingredients help the skin regain its elasticity, improve collagen production, is deeply hydrating and moisturising leaving the skin brighter and more radiant. The action of the needle (similar to micro-needling) also stimulates the skin, improving the circulation and enhances the results. For those who are scared of needles this procedure, if done correctly is completely pain free. The speed and repetition of the needle can be surprisingly soothing but it’s not like a relaxing facial. The depth of the needle is so superficial there is little or no risk of bleeding or bruising. The treatment lasts about 30 minutes and after a soothing mask or moisturiser and UV protect of course, you will come out feeling a little tight (a bit like windburn) but little if any signs you have just been jabbed by millions of little injections. The next day while you may not have morphed into a supermodel you will notice a subtle but noticeable improvement with your skin looking brighter and feeling smooth and radiant. As the face is not only a give away to our age this treatment is fantastic for the neck, décolletage and hands. If it’s good enough for Madonna and other celebrities it’s good enough for you. A very fine needle is used on a syringe connected to the dermal filler, which comes in a 2ml syringe, to apply the hyaluronic acid dermal filler just underneath the surface of the skin. Unlike traditional dermal fillers, Profilho is injected in a bolus or ball at strategic points in the face and neck, depending on the areas

to be treated. As Profilho can spread so effectively through the tissues, there is no danger of it causing a lump in the areas it is injected, instead if flows and gives a supportive layer of hyaluronic acid under the skin. There is no need for any local or topical anaesthesia with this treatment as discomfort is extremely minimal. I have found that there is on occasionally a small bruise at a single injection point, which is always a risk when performing a

treatment of this nature. Treatment sessions are 1 month apart with at least 2 sessions necessary for the best results. In comparison with other biostimulatory products such as Restylane Vital or Teosyal Redensity 1 there are fewer injection points necessary with Profilo and treatment sessions are a longer time apart. With results lasting around 4-6 months per treatment it is easy to see why this treatment has rapidly gained traction with my patients both as a standalone application or with other treatments such as wrinkle relaxing injections or other hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. JUVAPEN I have also been using the new Juvapen over the past few months to administer Botox injections and it has been a very positive experience for me. The benefits of the pen in allowing micro doses of 0.5U botulinum toxin have allowed me to create a much more refined treatment result which is difficult to achieve by hand as the dosing is so small. I have also had positive feedback from patients on the reduced discomfort experienced during injection, and the reduced skin reaction it seems to cause. Definitely a new favourite at The Lovely Clinic. www.juvaplus.com

SPMU BROWS

BOTCHED BROWS POTENTIAL PITFALLS TO PERFECTION Expert comment from Sophie Doros, semi-permanent make-up technician and co-founder of The Mint Clinic. Based in Hatfield, the popular clinic offers an extensive range of facial aesthetics, semi-permanent make-up (SPMU) and nail treatments. for my course, followed by extension courses and product purchases, so my personal investment amounted to over £10,000 before I even got my first client! I’ve seen different courses for under £3,000 and afterwards the technician’s work is below substandard with prices of around £99. This makes sense as their initial outlay was three times less than mine, so their prices reflect this too. So please be aware that bargain prices reflect the level of training behind the brows and don’t be tempted to risk it! What could go wrong? With inadequate training comes substandard work, which could result in you needing to get your brows fixed by a professional and paying out all over again. That’s the best case scenario, as aside from the aesthetically poor results I have heard horror stories from clients of poorly trained technicians cutting costs in various ways, including sharing needles and wound care packs between more than one client! This is not only unhygienic but extremely dangerous and as much as we love beauty treatments, no cosmetic improvement is

Everything was white, bright and naturally light. I was greeted, offered refreshment and invited to complete a short questionnaire about my skin before being lead down to one of the 8 treatment rooms on offer. I had opted for the 45 min skin energy

My skin had suffered from post baby hormone changes, leading to breakouts and sleep deprivation leading to fine lines so I was certainly in a position to put this to the test. After my consultation it was time to get down to business, so I hopped into the extremely inviting heated bed of thick fluffy towels and instantly felt relaxed. The treatment started with a deep cleanse, this was repeated twice to my delight as the massage to my face and neck felt heavenly. The next step involved the application of the exfoliant fluid with a small brush combined with the exfoliant cream. The latter was massaged in to go deep into the dermal layer. Both products feature a unique peeling system of fruit acids and enzymes which combine to dissolve dead skin cells and accelerate cellular regeneration. This felt cool at first but then started to tingle in

PREMIER LEAGUE BARBER

How often is it that you are watching a big football match or walking past a billboard featuring top International football stars and wondered ‘How do they look so on trend’? How are they groomed within an inch of perfection?

W

ell, It is all down to the amazing craft of the renowned celebrity groomer/ stylist and our cover star, Daniel

Johnson, who has a portfolio that reads like a who’s who of the top footballing elite. Whether it’s trimming Wayne Rooney or Mario Balotelli hair or styling Jermain Defoe, nobody else can match the high standards required for living your life in the largest public spotlight. He is the man responsible for the biggest trending haircuts in the world - how many people remember the infamous ‘Balotelli’ or indeed when Gareth Bale signed for Real Madrid? and tightening being common place it wouldn’t be long before procedures for the male more intimate parts would pop up. Pardon the pun. So where does this stem from? Is it the ‘locker room syndrome’ where a guy’s power symbol doesn’t measure up? Or is it age? Which until now, men have had to resign themselves to the fact that the scrotum ages prematurely. Whatever the reason why shouldn’t they feel better about themselves? Wanting your bits and pieces to look and feel better can be physiological as well as visual, which can lead to other emotional concerns such as erectile dysfunction. There have been various treatments around for a while including; penis pumps, hyaluronic acid fillers, fat injections, PRP and shock therapy (ouch). Some of these are targeted at the aesthetic appearance where others for medical conditions. Some practitioners have also found that when using lasers for hair removal in that delicate area, often referred to as ‘back, sack and crack’, clients have noticed an improvement in the area’s appearance, including; becoming less wrinkly and a smoother texture. The coup de grace is the scrotal lift known as ‘scrotoplasty’, a surgical procedure which tightens, lifts and reduces the scrotum’s excess skin. But what about Botox or now aptly named ’Scrotox’. Botox as a procedure improves the appearance of wrinkles and decreases sweating and has been used for a while on marathon runners and cyclists as it reduces burns in the inner thigh from rubbing and sweat irritation. So with the right application in the genital area the scrotum can appear less wrinkled and in some noted cases appear larger due to the muscles being relaxed. Though this is a

BLEPHS LIKE A BASSETT HOUND When your eyelids get as droopy as a Basset Hound there is often little that you can do to rectify it and sometimes surgery is the only way to go for an effective and long lasting result. his looks and what he wanted to achieve. He told me it was at this time he became aware that he had no long term non-surgical solutions open to him so he opted to explore surgical options. After a full consultation and Mr Pacifico having explained the treatment options and it was agreed that blepharoplasty in combination with a lateral temple lift was the way forward. Don agreed on surgery and has never regretted his decision and the results are clear.

HOW POPULAR IS THIS KIND OF SURGERY? Women still make up 80% of our patients, but men are becoming increasingly comfortable with the concept of cosmetic surgery WHY DO YOU SUGGEST HAVING BOTH TOGETHER? This is not necessary in everyone. However, many people who come to see a plastic surgeon about the upper eyelids also have what is known as “compensated brow ptosis”. This is when people subconsciously raise their brows to take off the weight of their heavy eyelids (or else the heavy lid skin would impact on their visual fields). In these cases, if we were to perform an upper eyelid lift alone, the result would be disappointing but if the brow is stabilised to prevent it drooping down after surgery, the result is much fresher, the outer eyelid area is opened out (as if some wonder cream has been used) and the result is so much more satisfying, as demonstrated by Mr Moat. HAVE YOU NOTICED A DECLINE IN SURGICAL REQUESTS SINCE THE INCREASE IN NON-SURGICAL OPTIONS? As a clinic that specialises in plastic surgery as its core business, we have not seen this. However, one effect we have seen is that people who come to enquire about surgery are sometimes more suited to non-surgical treatments. A typical example is someone I saw recently who came to have lower blepharoplasty, however was much better

suited to tear trough treatment with filler. She now has an excellent result and surgery can be postponed for another decade or so! IS IT A GENERATIONAL THING OPTING FOR SURGERY? At the end of the day, the right procedure has to chosen for the right individual. If a practitioner is limited in their repertoire of treatments, or cannot offer surgery, they should recognise when it is the right thing to refer onwards. There is always the concern that “if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail”. All clinicians therefore have a responsibility to give the correct and best advice to their patients, even if it means recommending something they cannot offer themselves. WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR TREATMENTS FOR MEN AT PURITY BRIDGE? We see a steady stream of men coming for appointments for facial and body procedures. These include gynaecomastia correction (man boobs), liposuction, facelifts (in fact one of my patients next week is a male facelift and blepharoplasty), eyelid surgery and much more. BIO Marc Pacifico is dedicated to providing the highest possible standard of care to every cosmetic or reconstructive surgery patient in his care. He will provide you with an open and honest opinion regarding your suitability for surgery, with your safety and wellbeing as his top priority. When not at work, Marc spends as much time as possible with his young family. Marc Pacifico is a fully accredited specialist in plastic surgery, and is on the Specialist Register in Plastic Surgery with the General Medical Council and a member of both BAPRAS & BAAPS.

in London. A chance to really put a stamp on the new rebranding of Ross, to which I was able to truly be whom, I wanted to be. Losing the weight so quick does come with its own side effects. Physically all the hard work had left its own stamp. I have loose hanging skin on my stomach, which I am saving to get rectified by surgery, and a very gaunt looking face and complexion. This was then my next plan of action, I decided to tackle my gaunt face by booking in to see tope celebrity doctor Vincent Wong. He was so kind and offered to contact the suppliers of his dermal filler, Intraline, to see if they could help me. Intraline and Dr Vincent Wong transformed my face with a specially designed filler for men and botox injections to relax the wrinkle in my forehead. I am now much happier and look younger with fuller cheeks to make the ‘weight loss look’ a distance past. I will definitely keep these treatments up. With the fantastic results from Dr Vincent my confidence has soared and I am truly on that path to inner perfection. There is still a long way to go and more tweaks required but without Aesthetics, a daily skin care regime I don’t think I would be in the positive, happy and grounded frame of mind I find myself in today. There is too much stigma surrounding men having treatment, yes it’s falling but it’s still prevalent. From a personal perspective I would recommend anyone defeat those demons, get the right help and advice, be wise in your decisions of practitioner and treatments and do what makes you truly happy.

Asking, ‘what do women look at, when they meet a man for the first time?’ Men in the UK are some of the most stylish in the world. Male grooming is growing in popularity, with sales of men’s grooming products estimated to tip the £608million mark, by 2017*. But with all these lotions and potions, are we really doing it right? Together with the team at MyFaceMyBody we recently conducted a survey from a cross-section of women, from four different continents on what aesthetically they look for in a man. The results give a valuable insight into what many men can improve on.

instantly look at the aesthetics. So smile, hands, hair, eyes and lastly shoes. Basically a man’s overall appearance and presentation, so first impressions really do count! So for men, male grooming, is important, but spending hours in the bathroom isn’t essential. Maintain the basics and it’ll only take you a few minutes each day to keep you looking sharp.

A BARBERING MASTERCLASS WITH PALL MALL BARBERS BY ROSS LINTON

In this day and age it’s easy to say that appearance and feeling good is becoming more and more important to the everyday man, me included. Today’s gentlemen seem to be on a journey to find the ultimate in grooming brilliance. I’ll be asking is it possible to have old fashioned traditions with a modern twist, but still be discreet and offer the pleasures of being groomed and on point? I took it upon myself to find out

The result of my hair cut was unlike any others I had experienced. Dan had ensured my hair looked sharp and was styled to perfection using a mixture of techniques with scissors and blade. THE NO HAIR HAIR LOOK! Once upon a time men losing their hair were resigned to a life of baldness, hats and possibly even singledom! But no more with the introduction of scalp tattooing or scalp micropigmentation, similar to cosmetic tattooing used for eyebrows BY LISAJANE DAVIES
