Christmas in this Difficult Times The Christmas tree had been set up and decorated. The gifts have been wrapped. The parties planned and paid for. And then this. About 1,000 people have been killed by the wrath of Typhoon Sendong, turning suburban alleys into muddy streams and wooden houses into Angry Bird victims. It's like we were expecting Santa and something else darker and bigger than us coming down the chimney instead. These happened many times before. Another typhoon in Bicol years ago killed hundreds of people a few days before Christmas. A jampacked ship full of people going home for Christmas hit an oil tanker and caught fire. In times like this, Christmas can be very difficult. We practically are all survivors now ad as such we feel grief, anger, frustration and hopelessness. Even the President as not spared from the fingerpointings that followed, chastised for attending a party of the presidential security staff for even a few minutes. Environmental degradation, poverty, lack of warning and monitoring, lack of land use plans, overdevelopment, mining and global warming were among the factors blamed. But this can hardly comfort those who lost their loved ones. If you have lost a loved one, you and your family are likely to feel sadness about your loss and maybe also around memories associated with the circumstances of their death. Such sadness may not be obvious and is often expressed as irritability, anger or and intolerance.

We see a lot of calls for donations. If you can, please do whatever you can even if it means giving less to your families and friends. Give until it hurts. But other than physical, it is the emotional and mental that needs to be replenished during the Holidays. Give the survivors a space for rest and quiet times. Give them dignity to grieve on their own. Let them have a time out or if they feel more comfortable staying in where they are, let them. Be realistic about the situation. Don't bring your stable of movie stars and Santa impersonators and serenade them with Christmas songs because this may trigger the wrong emotions. Let them feel less guilty in having a Happy Christmas despite what happened. The more important thing is stop the fingerpointing first. There are no rights or wrongs in dealing with grief and loss and so please try to avoid judging yourself or others. Trust that everyone is doing the best they can at this difficult time. Remember that love, commitment and patience will help us all Filipinos and tide us through this Holiday season. Frank Cimatu, PDI - North Luzon Bureau
