APIR! The use of firecrackers has long been part of the Filipino tradition especially in New Year revelry. As if welcoming the new year is not complete without the powerful firecrackers and pyrotechnics such as bawang, judas belt, baby rocket, five star, sawa, super lolo and the like, that endanger life and limbs. The Department of Health (DOH) has long been advocating for a total ban on the sale and use of firecrackers. There is an existing law, Republic Act 7183, that mandates regulated sale, manufacture, distribution and the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devises. Some local government units have even ordinances prohibiting and or regulating the sale of firecrackers in efforts to prevent fire- cracker related injuries. But these are not strictly implemented . Some people are just plain hard headed or adventurous they indiscriminately use firecrackers resulting to injuries mostly on hands and eyes. For two decades, through surveillance and monitoring, injuries and deaths brought about by the use of fireworks and firecrackers still shows a very slight downward trend. From December 21, 2010 to January 5 .2011, DOH recorded 1,022 total injuries of which l, 972 were fireworks-related, 39 from stray bullet and 11 from fireworks ingestion. The sad fact is most victims are children aged 110 years. To help strike a balance between merriment and safety, from the Iwas Paputok campaign, the DOH this year is advocating a new firework-injury reduction campaign dubbed as 'Aksyon Paputok Injury Reduction' or APIR (Give Me Five). APIR is symbolized by the complete set of fingers representing five reminders to prevent injury from firecrackers and five simple tips to keep safe while celebrating the holidays. These reminders are : firecrackers/fireworks cause injuries and endanger health; children should not use any of such type; the public especially children should keep away from exploding firecracker/fireworks; never pick-up used firecracker/fireworks; and for the public to seek immediate medical treatment for any or all firecracker/firework-related injuries. The APIR also calls for patronizing pyrotechnics display or use of safer merry-making materials such as trumpets, torotot, vehicle-horns, tin cans and other safe noise makers in welcoming 2012 instead of explosive firecrackers. DOH is also enjoining the public to organize community fireworks display This involves the designation of an area for a common fireworks display in the communities to discourage the indiscriminate use of firecrackers. The help and cooperation of everyone in the reduction of firecrackerrelated injuries in the country is enjoined. Let us heed the reminders and tips of the DOH for a yuletide celebration that fun-filled, exciting, and safe. APIR! Frank Cimatu, PDI - North Luzon Bureau
