a range of homewares that will make both your heart & home sing. One Another’s limited edition, ethically made cushions, throws and artworks combine modern designs with traditional artisan hand embroidery and weaving. The end result has both ‘style and substance’, providing an independent income for women in poverty and beautiful products for you and your home. Husband and wife team, Rick and Annette Carter, have been immersed in the Sydney creative scene for years with individually over 15 years experience in their fields of design/photography and fashion respectively. The label also combines their shared passion for humanity and a desire to empower women living in poverty.
why make ethical homewares?
It’s estimated that approximately 2.5 billion people around the world live in poverty. Many of those who do have jobs work in dangerous conditions for little pay. Worse still, there are 168 million children trapped in a life of labour, meaning they miss out on basic human rights such as education, rest and leisure. These are more than statistics they are real people struggling to survive. It is the stories and faces of these women that inspired Rick and Annette to launch One Another. Their vision was to create a collection that brought together the traditional artisan techniques with a modern aesthetic. The intricate hand embroidery from India and beautiful loop weaving from Africa are incorporated in all their designs and is what makes them so unique. oneanother.com.au
hand made by who? Netu, Roshan or maybe Zanele! One Another works directly with two amazing groups of women, one from Lucknow, India and the other in Cape Town, South Africa. For these women we can provide a secure job in safe conditions with fair pay empowering them to break the cycle of poverty in their lives.
Zanele. South Africa (pictured)
As a child Zanele was very good with her hands and her mother, who was a seamstress, taught her to sew. She use to make dolls with sticks or whatever else was lying around and had the best dressed doll’s in the village!. She moved to Cape Town in 2000 to look for work and joined Mielie (One Another’s partner in South Africa) two years later. We are truly lucky to have Zanele in our team – she is hardworking, draws beautifully and is very organized. She serves as our Khayelitsha co-ordinator, ensuring that everyone knows which designs to weave, checking on quality and making sure that there are enough materials.
Neetu. India
Neetu is married with a little boy, Prakhar, who spends his afternoons after school at the workshop with his Mum. Neetu joined the collective when her husband was unemployed and the family badly needed money. She has just completed her secondary school final year by distance education, we are very proud of her achievement. Neetu is not only a good embroidery worker but a great person to go off to the market to get things done – she bargains brilliantly! oneanother.com.au
