SUMMER 2013/14
our story One Another combines unique abstract photographic prints with delicate hand embroidered illustrations in a colourful collection of limited edition, ethically produced cushions, scarves and artworks.
The embroidery is a key part of the collection and has been beautifully hand-stitched by an amazing group of women from Lucknow in Northern India. For these women a secure job in safe conditions with fair pay ensures the life of poverty they once lived is now a memory.
Husband and wife team, Rick and Annette Carter, come from a graphic design and fashion design background respectively and have individually over 15 years experience in their industries.
It is the stories and faces of these women that inspired them to launch One Another. Their vision was to create a collection that brought together the traditional embroidery techniques with a more modern aesthetic.
This is combined with their shared passion for humanity and a desire to empower and transform the lives of people living in poverty. They are committed to ethical production, asking consumers to question where and how products are made. oneanother.com.au
“We hope that the range of ethical products we have created encourage people to support one another and understand that they are designed to enhance your life and importantly the lives of the women who make them.
meet the embroiderers Our embroidery has been beautifully hand-stitched by an amazing group of women from Lucknow in Northern India. They work in safe conditions with fair pay, working only 5 days a week, which is unheard of in India. Praveen Widowed with two young children, Praveen needs every little bit she can earn. She values the shorter working week, and the flexibility to bring the children to work with her when they’re on holidays. Praveen was very quiet and rather sickly when she joined the team. Her health has now improved as has her confidence, she enjoys the time she spends working with the other embroiders. oneanother.com.au
Neetu Neetu (pictured) is married with a little boy, Prakhar, who spends his afternoons after school at the workshop with his Mum. Neetu joined the collective when her husband was unemployed and the family badly needed money. She has just completed her secondary school final year by distance education, we are very proud of her achievement. Neetu is not only a good embroidery worker but a great person to go off to the market to get things done – she bargains brilliantly! Roshan Roshan, at 17, is our youngest employee at the moment. She left school after Grade 7. Her father is sadly too ill to work, so she and her two brothers work to support the family and pay medical expenses. She’s a hard worker with a cheeky sense of fun.
