The One Dance UK Awards recognise the exceptional work and achievements of the many talented professionals who contribute to the dance sector throughout the UK. The shortlisted nominees that we welcome here tonight truly reflect the commitment and innovation that exists across the many parts of our sector, and we are delighted to shine a light on their important work.

Dr. Mena Fombo
Dr. Mena Fombo (hon) is an entrepreneur, a film director and global speaker. She is co founder of Blak Wave Productions creating content for TV, film and digital across the BFI, BBC and Channel 4 and founder of Black Girl Convention. Underpinning all of Mena’s work is her commitment to promoting and campaigning for equity and inclusion. She is also behind the powerful TEDx Talk No. You Cannot Touch My Hair which attracted contributions to the research study from around the world. She is an International ambassador for the City of Bristol and holds an honorary doctorate for work in Equalities from the University of the West of England. She has featured on the BME powerlist, was a nominee for the West Women’s award and Techspark Sparkies award, and previously was a Bristol247’s woman of the year!
PRESENTERS
Cleo Lake
Cleo is a community engagement professional, a researcher and has been involved within the arts and culture sector for over two decades. Cleo is the former Lord Mayor of Bristol (2018-2019) and has a degree in Dance from Bath Spa University and a diploma in Dance Therapy.
Impermenance
Directed by Roseanna Anderson & Josh Ben-Tovim, Impermanence makes work which is theatrical, eclectic, political and entertaining; drawing inspiration from journals, film, poetry, interviews, paintings and historical figures. They are the resident company at The Mount Without - the new historic space for dance in Bristol.
Laura Kriefman
Laura is CEO and Artistic Director at Barbican Theatre Plymouth and Hellion Trace Ltd. She is an award winning choreographer and artist with over 15 years experience as a creative, a producer and commissioner across theatre, dance, and interactive technology.
Victor Fung, Ph.D., FRSA
Dr. Victor Fung is the Artistic Director and Joint CEO of Pavilion Dance South West. As a cultural enabler and award-winning dance artist, his work has been celebrated internationally for over fifteen years, reaching audiences and participants across four continents.

PERFORMERS
Bristol Ballroom Community
Originating in Harlem, New York in the 1920s, Ballroom Culture has since spread across the globe. With its racial inclusivity pioneered by Trans figured heads such as Crystal Labeija, the Ballroom Scene celebrates and prioritises LGBTQIA+ People of Colour. Members of the Ballroom Scene come together for Balls, where individuals and Houses compete in fashion, beauty, realness and performance categories for prizes. The Bristol Ballroom Community formed in 2019, as they were obsessed with the Ballroom Culture and wanted to make a safe space for Queer People of Colour. They eventually reached out to the wider Ballroom Scene.
Impermenance
Nominated for Best Independent Company at the National Dance Awards 2022, Impermenance is the resident company at newly renovated church, The Mount Without, in Bristol. Work for stage includes SEXBOX (“Ingenious Choreography” **** The Guardian); BAAL (British Council international tour); DA DA DARLING (“Precision Crafted” **** The Observer); MAJOR ARCANA (Mayfest 2022). Work for film includes EMPTY STAGE (Birmingham Royal Ballet); LADY BLACKSHIRT (Bristol Old Vic, Sydney Opera House); FERAL (London Symphony Orchestra); BLAST (BBC Four), THE BALLET OF THE NATIONS (Best art film, New Renaissance Film Festival).
AWARDS CATEGORIES
HEALTH & WELLBEING IN DANCE AWARD
This award is for any person, team or organisation whose work has had a transformational impact on the wellbeing of people who dance. Their work will have contributed to improve the physical and/or psychological wellbeing of dancers, communities or patients. The judges have evaluated the subjective stories and experiences of those impacted.
DanceWest Dr. Rosaria Gracia Parkinson’s Dance Science
SCIENCE & RESEARCH IN DANCE AWARD
This award is for research relating to dance that is pushing the artform forward with scientific enquiry. This research will use scientific methodologies, whether in applied practice or in laboratory settings. It will be impacting how dance is created, seen, taught and understood, and will be helping influence the future of the dance industry.
YOUNG PEOPLE’S DANCE CHAMPION AWARD
This award is for all individual dance educators who are championing dance in the lives of young people, regardless of style, genre or setting. This is anybody who is an educator working with children or young people from pre-school through to higher education, whether in or outside formal educational settings. They will be providing quality tuition and guidance, instilling a culture and love of dance, and having a positive impact on those they work with.

This award is for any person or organisation who is using dance as a tool to create, strengthen and/or build communities with non-professional groups in any setting and with any age group. They will be passing on a passion for, and enjoyment of dance, bringing its benefits directly into communities, whilst showing that dance is for anyone and everyone.
THE DANCE SPOTLIGHT AWARD
This award is a chance to shine a light on those whose work is vital to the production and support of dance. Bringing those back of house to front of house, these individuals and teams work tirelessly to help make dance happen, making it possible for people to see, engage with and work within dance.
THE DANCE CHANGEMAKER AWARD
This award recognises bold, brave and impactful work that has driven progress in our sector, improving access to dance for all, and championing diversity and inclusion. This could be for a person, team, organisation, campaign or movement. They may be taking risks to challenge norms, or using dance as a tool to drive positive change, and will be able to clearly demonstrate the impact they’ve had.

THE GREEN DANCE AWARD
This award celebrates any form of work that uses dance as a tool to spotlight and respond to the environment and climate crisis. This could be a specific project or person whose work has helped raise awareness, changed industry behaviours or responded artistically to environmental issues. Work can be in any genre, scale, location or remit within dance.

This award recognises an individual or organisation who has made a significant contribution to the dance industry in the last year, and is is selected based on a public vote. Whatever their area of work, be that as a dancer, choreographer, advocate, educator or beyond, this individual will have helped to raise the profile of dance amongst the general public.
THE BOB LOCKYER AWARD FOR DIGITAL INNOVATION
This award recognises the use of digital and technology to innovate how we see, experience and understand dance. For example, this could be for work in: film, photography, VR/AR/XR, live and digital performance, marketing, dance science, dancers’ healthcare, work in inclusion and diversity or education.
ARTISTIC INNOVATION IN DANCE AWARD
This award is to recognise innovation in the artistic elements of dance, and how they can unlock new ways of storytelling, exploring themes, and challenging how we think. This can be for any artistic work regardless of genre, location, setting, resources or scale.
JANE ATTENBOROUGH AWARD
The Jane Attenborough Award honours an individual working in dance who has made an outstanding contribution to the artform throughout their career. An award that is 20 years in the making this year, and named in memory of the founding Director of Dance UK (later becoming One Dance UK), this award aims to highlight the important, contributions made by exceptional individuals who make a real difference to how dance is created, supported, and seen.

The Award is named in memory of the founding Director of Dance UK, Jane Attenborough (1955 – 2004).
A dynamic and passionate advocate for the arts, and in particular dance, throughout a 25year career Jane made a huge impact on the arts sector working for the Royal Academy of Dance, Arts Council of Great Britain (now Arts Council England), Rambert Dance Company (now Rambert), Dance UK (one of the four organisations that merged to form One Dance UK) and The Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
Throughout her career, and particularly as a founding executive director of Dance UK, Jane used her vast experience of arts management, lobbying, fundraising and administration to contribute to the promotion of the dance sector and improving conditions for dancers. Her forward-thinking work resulted in ground-breaking and long-lasting legacies for the dance community, including the creation and development of our Healthier Dancer Programme, which continues to undertake vital work in advocating and providing education to support dancers’ performance and physical, psychological, and social health to this day.
Every year One Dance UK recognises the incredible lasting impact Jane had on the dance sector by dedicating an Award in her name. This Award is presented to individuals who, like Jane, have gone above and beyond the call of duty in order to move dance forward and enable the art form to thrive.
ABOUT THE BOB LOCKYER AWARD
This year, the dance sector lost an incredible innovator, collaborator, director, patron, founding member of One Dance UK and so much more, Bob Lockyer OBE truly was an inspiration, a mentor and a friend to all of us in the sector.
The team at One Dance UK have formally changed the name of our new Digital Innovation in Dance Award to pay homage to Bob and his incredible legacy. From now on, this award –one that showcases work using technology and digital to innovate how we see, experience, understand and use dance – will also pay tribute to Bob’s incredibly vibrant mind and all the innovation he bought to the sector.
