RE:GENERATIONS CONFERENCE 2019

Welcome.

Andrew Hurst Chief Executive, One Dance UK

Welcome to Re:generations – dance and the digital space, we are thrilled to see so many of you here. I would like to give a special welcome to our esteemed keynote speakers, Amanda Spann, Karen Gallagher MBE and Dr Thomas F. DeFrantz who will be sharing their insights and expertise with us. I would also like to thank IRIE! dance theatre, Middlesex University, dance Immersion and The Lowry for their support and partnership on this key sector event. The theme of the conference is‘dance and digital space’, looking at the way digital technologies impact, support and progress dance as an art form and its contribution to the UK and beyond. As the Sector Support Organisation, it is important for us to bring together leading artists and practitioners; creating a space for critical debate, sharing of best practice and development of a strong and sustainable future for dance. Hopefully many of you are already familiar with One Dance UK and the work we do to represent and support the dance sector. We welcome new members, so if you have just discovered us and would like to find out more about joining, please do speak to one of the team about the current membership offers. Thank you again for joining us today. We hope you have a stimulating, thoughtprovoking and rewarding conference!

Mercy Nabirye FRSA WLF

Beverley Glean MBE

I am delighted to be part of the welcoming team for this year’s gathering. We have enjoyed putting together a stimulating programme for you, blending a mix of old and new perspectives from across the globe. This fifth edition is knowledge packed and filled with sessions not to be missed. The discourse is increasingly richer, open and breaking new ground in many ways. As the space we occupy transitions, it is inevitable that we boldly explore further afield and transition to be able to build on what we have achieved so far.

IRIE! dance theatre is once again delighted to be a partner of Re:generations International Conference 2019. We have had the great honor of being associated with this groundbreaking initiative since the first conference took place in London in 2010.The aim is always to ensure that the overarching mission of the event remains constant. “…bringing the dance community together to stimulate critical debate, share current practice, research and innovation and encourage new perspectives for the future.”

Dance and the Digital Space is a response to feedback from past conferences. We know that we have only scratched the surface of this theme. However, we hope that this showcase platform, raises awareness and triggers your curiosity to action.

With each conference the conversations, workshops and performances continue to carry an energy and excitement that’s engaging, inspiring and set the tone for moving forward. Hence, the focus for the next three incredible days‘the digital space’. It is critical that we the advocates of Dance of the African Diaspora (DAD) stay abreast of developments that impact the sector. We must continue to grow the conversations globally, which is the ultimate reach for the conference.

Head of Dance of the African Diaspora, One Dance UK

Many thanks to all the contributors of this year’s conference. Thanks to the past conference contributors in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016, who have helped to build the foundation on which this 2019 Re:generations stands on today. We welcome you to share and widen connections and hope that your experience impacts your career paths.

Artistic Director and CEO, IRIE! dance theatre

This partnership allows me to play a significant part in shaping the event and I am in awe of the generosity, passion and dedication of the team of individuals involved in fundraising and planning to ensure the success of Re:generations 2019.

Artistry Youth Dance (UK) A Cure for Longing A Cure for Longing explores the involuntary human instinct to pursue a sense of belonging. This key component of identity and esteem is often found synonymously with one’s connection to a tribe; family, state, country, a people, trends or friends. To us all, this pursuit, at times, becomes a painful survival-task with the inability to find a tribe commonly treated as a social illness that is to, by all means, be avoided. The fear is we may never recover. The pursuit of belonging is spent at all cost, even when connecting to the tribe could come at the loss of belonging to self.
