brief brief history history of of america«s america«s cup cup According to historians, the origin of the regattas dates back to the year 1661, when King Charles II of England and the Duke of York sailed from Greenwich to Gravesend betting who would be the fastest. King Charles II won. Half a century later the first English Yacht Club was founded with the purpose of organizing regattas. The first official sailing regatta involving boats from America and England was held on August 22nd, 1851 on the Isle of Wight, on the south coast of England. This would later be known worldwide under the name of America's Cup. A famous anecdote persists from this first regatta in which Queen Victoria I of the United Kingdom asked who was going first, to which one of her servants replied: ÒThe America, Your Majesty.Ó The trophy was donated by the owner of the schooner America to the Yacht Club of New York, to promote competition among nations by organizing a regatta that had the trophy as a prize. Since then the trophy was renamed the America's Cup. New York held the trophy from 1870 until 1983, the year they lost the regatta against the Australians. In the next edition, however, they regained the trophy. In 1995 New Zealand took the title from the Americans once again and kept it in their possession for two editions. The Swiss boat Alinghi captured it in 2003 and elected Valencia, Spain, as the venue for its defense in 2007, keeping the trophy in their possession.
