Before I became a ‘semi-thug’ which, let’s face it, is what some involved in real street combat are - I was an athlete who was enthralled by the skill of what is now identified as WKF Karate. This was my sport, my passion - this was who I was. I became someone different because as already stated - my immaturity clouded my vision. Being a skillful, fit athlete just wasn’t enough, if my Karate couldn’t do ‘as advertised’ then I felt like a fake. Then after becoming that person standing over yet another unconscious wannabe while his mates promised bloody revenge (that rarely happened), I realized I was faking this too. Knocking out thugs on a nightclub door is not self-defence and it certainly wasn’t Karate either. The realization that most of the top self-defence instructors had never been in a street fight that wasn’t somehow connected to being a bouncer, was a light-bulb moment.
