Welcome the Season O u r g u i d e t o a s t y l i s h h o l i day
onekingslane.com
From our home to yours... We’re so excited to gather all of our favorite ideas and inspiration and bring them to you here. Whether you are readying your guest room for visitors, making an arrangement for the table, adorning a present, or decorating with greenery, we want to reinvigorate old and new ideas to make your home the chicest, most comfortable place to be. We believe there are always fresh ways to think about your home. This could mean a few extras on a nightstand to make guests feel pampered, putting a twist on a Thanksgiving table, or designing a salonstyle display of wreaths over your mantel.
No matter the holiday task, you’ll find a simple, stylish solution on the following pages. You may even find a new seasonal tradition. We’ve revealed some of our own and hope you’ll share them with friends and family. The following is a labor of love from everyone here at One Kings Lane. We hope that the ideas and inspiration will help you fill your home with warmth and special memories all season long. Cheers!
Our favorite way to greet guests? With a gift in hand and a glass of Champagne.

Know your ribbon
Ready to wrap?
Ribbon comes in all manner of finishes and widths. Here’s a guide to what to use when.
Setting up a designated area will make wrapping a joy. Here are the essentials and clever ways to keep it all together.
Doubl e - Face d S at in
A ribbon woven to have the same finish and color on both sides. Good for: Bows, as you will see both sides
S AT IN P IC OT E D GE
A flat satin ribbon with a decorative edge. Good for: Adding a bit of embellishment to flat, solid paper
A Keep rolls of paper
in a decorative wastebasket or bin to see your options.
B Bright adhesive notes can go on wrapped presents to keep everything straight.
C A rack with pegs or
individual hooks keeps ribbon organized and handy.
D A glass cylinder or
vase makes spools of ribbon and trim easy to spot.
E Make sure your
scissors are sharp and have long blades. This makes it easier to cut straight lines.
How to wrap a gift
M etal l ic
Shiny ribbon woven with metallic fibers. Good for: Adding extra shimmer to a gift
( p e r f e c t ly ) STE P 1 Start by trimming your paper so that it wraps around the gift box, allowing one inch for overlap.
STEP 4 Fold the left and right sides in, and secure with double-sided tape. Repeat with opposite side.
STE P 2 Position the seam at the side rather than in the center of the box's bottom. (This conceals the seam completely.)
STEP 5 Flip the box over and secure top flap with double-sided tape.
STE P 3 With the box lying face down, fold the top down towards the bottom edge. If your paper extends past the bottom of the box, trim the excess. This is key as it eliminates bulk and will give you a smooth finish and crisp corners. 10 |
fall/winter 2012
STEP 6 Instead of a classic bow, wrap a ribbon around the box and secure with a knot. It’s a simple, modern alternative (and requires less skill and ribbon).

GroS gr ain
A heavyweight, closely woven ribbon with ribbing. Good for: A crisp, preppy look
Ve lvet Ribbo n
A tufted weave with a short, dense plush pile. Good for: An elegant, formal look
Custom Gift Tags We love using embossed or personalized stationery as gift cards. You can tailor it to the recipient and it feels elegant and old-fashioned. A Craft a holiday message using monogrammed stationery. B A place card adds a
three-dimensional look to a flat box.
C Embellish a menu
card with a drawing or personal message.

Fill a linen leather-handled basket with good olive oil, exotic salts and peppercorns, a few cookbooks, and a set of mise en place bowls to make them feel like a master chef.
A silver ice bucket is a beautiful gift, especially when it's filled with a favorite varietal, stemware, a wine diary, and plenty of coasters.

Lots of fowl play going on here.
CELEBRATION
Haute Harvest Thanksgiving is all about the conversation and the sumptuous spread. We wanted to celebrate both by using seasonal fruit as decor and creating a table that is both relaxed and refined. A tablecloth with hits of regal purple and blue is a fashionable base. Glass plates keep the setting from getting too heavy. Lastly, low arrangements allow banter to flow freely.
Fill gold-rimmed bowls with autumnal offerings. We like persimmons, lady apples, pears, and a few gilded pomegranates.
WHY THIS TABLE WORKs THE PATTERN
Choosing one large-scale print makes it easier to blend in accents that have smaller patterns. We chose a paisley that reminded us of classic crewelwork. THE PALETTE
Colors on opposite ends of the spectrum can work well together.
Cool tones of blue and purple add a regal layer to autumn’s warm shades of orange and brown. THE ACCENTS
Use what is readily available to you for a truly natural scene. Findings from a fall walk (crabapples, leaves) feel perfectly at home here.

CELEBRATION
Bold and Bright We wouldn’t normally think of red, white, and black as holiday colors. But selecting deeper shades of each led to a dramatic and festive palette on which to play with bold pattern. We kept the rest of the pieces simple and streamlined. A touch of gold here; a hit of red there. To finish, tiny wrapped gifts are an added treat for lucky guests.
Forced narcissus bulbs scattered among votives infuse your entry with a light, sweet scent.

fall/winter 2012
Fill a threetiered stand with votives for a glowing centerpiece on the buffet.
Glassware is a great opportunity to add unexpected color like these ruby-red tumblers.
What a memorable meal. Tiny rosemary wreaths (or any you like) will ensure guests remember this party.
WHY THIS TABLE WORKs THE PATTERN
Two bold patterns work best when their colors are identical and the scales are similar. Our zigzag and graphic floral look as if they were made for each other. THE PALETTE
THE ACCENTS
You don’t need holly or jingle bells to signal the holiday. Drop subtle seasonal hints in the form of a paperwhite narcissus in the entry or a rosemary wreath on the back of a guest’s chair.
Don’t feel hemmed in by “traditional” colors. Be inspired by favorite places, pictures—anything that makes you feel happy and festive. Make a Memorable Toast

DAY’S TRADITION VP of Merchandising, Branded Sales
“I collect colored glassware and printed napkins. I love that around the holidays, I have a number of fresh looks for my parties. My friends are always excited to see what they will sit down to.”
Have fun. Sprinkle fragrant petals instead of confetti on each plate.

Exotic Escape Our resolution for a New Year’s table? Take guests on an around-the-world trip. Our inspiration was India, but pick your own exotic escape. The key is strategic texture and color. Woven accents are a nice contrast to more pristine white china. Hits of hot pink (the navy blue of India) add energy. Flower petals, porcelain bud vases, and gold almonds are alluring touches. The effect is global glamour to ring in 2013.
Luminarias made from cutouts of Indian temples are a transportive touch.
WHY THIS TABLE WORKs THE PATTERN
Texture can function much like pattern. The more you layer, the richer the feel. Try knit place mats, glossy chargers, and woven plates. THE PALETTE
For more festive entertaining ideas, visit
Make your own drama. While many think New Year’s is a time for black and white, choosing a softer shade like pink was more surprising, not to mention super flattering
for guests when illuminated by candlelight. THE ACCENTS
Don’t take it all too literally. Covering the table in Indian accents would have resembled a Bollywood set. Instead, we allowed ourselves the room to mix in other global touches that still felt right.

Deck Your Halls We love the classics of the season‌ greenery, glimmering ornaments, candlelight. But how to make it feel fresh? We let the materials lead the way and found new places to showcase their natural beauty.
Greenery The moment you bring greenery into your home, the color and scent announce that the holidays have arrived. While garlands and wreaths always look fabulous on banisters and doors, they can also be infused into a room’s decor to change up the look of the space.
