Our role is to make your Sport and Recreation experience a pleasure and help you on your way to improving your healthy lifestyle. ‘Mens Sana in Corpore Sano’ hits you as you enter the UL Sport Arena Foyer to guide you towards our goal ‘A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body’. It is our mission to actively encourage you to achieve the perfect lifestyle balance to achieve your objectives whether that is in education or simply, life. Our major claim to fame is that we have designed a unique Sports Specific Environment that allows the ‘Basic Beginner and the Olympic or International Athlete’ to achieve their exercise goals in the same sporting facility and at the same time each working at their own intensity level but in harmony. Our aim is to be Number One and to offer the best programmes to compliment the best range of facilities available on any University Campus in the world. Our journey is exciting and you get to experience the sporting benefits of the road we have travelled. Last year we upgraded Ireland’s first 50m Olympic size Swimming Pool, the 400m International Athletic Track and the new and exciting Maguire’s Field Team Sport Zone. Well this year thanks to the continued support of UL student population you will see Ireland’s biggest Indoor Climbing Wall rise out of the ground at the side of the UL Sport Arena for you to enjoy. Work has commenced on this magnificent project which will be available for use in the late Spring Semester 2020. Exciting times for Sport and Recreation as the University of Limerick continues to set the standards not just in Ireland but up there with any University Campus worldwide. The facilities and the exciting programmes have been professionally developed specifically for YOU to enjoy but you have to make the initial move to be part of this fantastic Active and Healthy UL Campus.

Alas, this is my last cover address to all after a long and exciting innings as Director, Sport and Recreation at this magnificent University. It has been a wonderful journey filled with great memories and milestones that can simply be described as a ‘labour of love’. My one wish is that you all continue to avail of our unique Sports Experience to reach your goals and improve the quality of your life. Our aim is for you to have a great fitness experience, each time you work out with us in any of Group Fitness classes. Generally people attend a class because the time suits, that’s why nearly all our classes are multi-level. You will find that our instructors will provide options and modifications in all classes. You work at your own level. Our groups get results much quicker in our group formats, rather than working-out alone. Beginners are always welcome and can start anytime. It’s really important to try to arrive at least ten minutes prior to the class start time, to allow time for adequate set up and/ or to inform the instructor that you are new to the class. Our instructors are highly trained, motivated and educated, with many travelling for continuous education, so you will be in good hands. With over 70 Classes per week, we update our timetable weekly, so you can check it out online at www.ulsport.ie or pick up a copy at UL Sport Arena Reception. UL Sport prides itself on innovation so our extensive timetable may change throughout the year. An updated schedule of classes is always available from reception or online at www.ulsport.ie, with regular updates on our social media. AQUA JOGGING Aqua Jogging is literally running in deep water, wearing a flotation belt around your waist, to keep you fully buoyant and is such an enjoyable, effective, non-impact interval workout. Ideal for those who simply enjoy pool exercise, all the way to elite athletes, for performance enhancing and rehabilitation. LES MILLS BODYATTACK™ A high-energy fitness class with moves that cater for total beginners to total exercise addicts. BodyAttack™ combines athletic movements like running, lunging and jumping, with strength exercises such as push-ups and squats. A LES MILLS™ instructor will pump out energizing tunes and lead you through the workout – challenging your limits in a good way, burning up to 730 calories and leaving you with a sense of achievement. LES MILLS BODYPUMP™ BODYPUMP™ is the world’s most successful barbell training class and the secret to this is the ‘rep effect’. High reps with low to medium weight is the formula you need to tone and strengthen muscles and force the body to consume calories. Your BODYPUMP™ instructor is trained to provide lots of options for each exercise, so that everyone who comes to class leaves feeling like they’ve had a great workout. Always arrive early so you can set your equipment up. LES MILLS GRIT CARDIO™ GRIT CARDIO is a high-impact cardio workout like nothing else. Designed to burn fat and rapidly improve athletic capability, this explosive, 30-minute team training session combines high impact body weight exercises and uses no equipment. LES MILLS GRIT STRENGTH™ GRIT STRENGTH is a 30-minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout, designed to improve strength and build lean muscle. This workout uses a barbell, weighted plates and body weight exercises to blast all major muscle groups. LES MILLS GRIT Strength takes cutting edge HIIT and combines it with powerful music and inspirational coaches who will be motivating you to go harder to get fit, fast. FIT FOR LIFE A low-impact conditioning class, ideal for those who prefer less impact and intensity, but would still like a workout which tones and strengthens. A very friendly and non-intimidating class environment, with sections to target upper, lower and mid-body. KICK START LIFT LEAN KICK START LIFT LEAN is one of our adopted Fat Loss and Wellness Programmes and participants have had brilliant success. Under the guidance of Kick Start Coaches, you undertake a new approach to food as you become empowered, via knowledge and training to make the right food choices for you. You also receive online support and back-up, with an abundance of information to keep you going. If you would like to make some changes in your life and 'Kick Start' your body, this programme could be for you. REBOUNDING A low impact, yet energetic, cardio workout on mini-trampolines. A full body workout with many health benefits and especially good for the immune system. Also kind to joints as there is no impact. Ideal if you had to take a break from running on the roads, now you can bounce back, in our new UL Rebounding Sessions. An array of movements to inspirational music, time efficient, stress busting and energy boosting. SPINNING® UL Sport Arena is an Official Spinning® Centre, with a team of highly motivated official Spinning® instructors, trained to teach all levels of fitness, within one class, on a journey of hill-climbs and flat roads, designed to challenge your heart-rate and strengthen your legs. Spinning® classes offer a variety of rides, movements, coaching and motivation that keep riders safe, excited and engaged. 22

TOTAL BODY WORKOUT Total Body Workout is an energetic workout in our Main Sports Hall (and it’s included in your membership) with a friendly atmosphere, pumping tunes and cardio choreographed sections, with or without handweights, finished off with a core section. Richie Clifford and his team would love to have you join them in one of Ireland’s largest Fitness Classes. TRACK ATTACK Track Attack is a unique circuit training experience, which takes place on our Indoor jogging track (first floor). Push yourself as hard as YOU want to. A perfect place for beginners to start or an ideal class to push your limits. You literally perform an exercise and move along the track to your nextstation. A great atmosphere and non-intimidating class environment. TRX® TRX (Suspension Training) is a popular workout that leverages gravity and your bodyweight to perform hundreds of exercises. You, the participant, will be in control of how you wish to challenge yourself on each exercise, because you can simply adjust your body position to add or decrease resistance. A versatile workout for 'everyone', TRX Suspension Training will help to strengthen your core, increase your stamina, making you feel and look your best. ULOVE TO LIFT ULOVE TO LIFT is UL Sport Arena’s very own barbell, weights & conditioning class, with each session having a unique feel. ULOVE TO LIFT is taught by UL Sport Instructors who have a passion for creative conditioning and strong backgrounds in Strength & Conditioning, Personal Training, Crossfit, Athletics & Core Training. ULOVE TO LIFT is a guided weights class, and will give you a time effective full body workout.

HIIT (HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING) HIIT is an extremely efficient way to get leaner and gain great results. It might not always ‘feel’ easy as you alternate between high and low intensity, but the beauty is you work at YOUR high intensity (NO ONE ELSE’S) Look out for our HIIT Challenges – where we will mix your HIIT workouts up, on a daily basis. HIIT is suitable for beginners and experienced alike. You just need to listen to your body and enjoy the variety. PILATES (MIXED) A series of mat-work exercises designed to lengthen, strengthen and condition the body, based on the teachings of Joseph H Pilates. Focus on classical Pilates fundamental body awareness and strong technique. SPORTS PILATES All of the benefits and movements from a classical Pilates class, with the added incentive for those from a sporting and/or fitness background to take that opportunity to enhance flexibility and core strength, to up your game and performance. POWER PILATES All the fundamental Pilates movements, with an infusion of flow and movement patterns, adding power and full body strength.

You will love our Yoga Classes at UL Sport Arena. Yoga has become so important to many, and we are really proud of our Yoga programme. If you are new to Yoga you are so welcome, just please always tell the instructor if it’s your first time.

CORE VINASA FLOW YOGA Vinasa Yoga is a highly popular strong flow style class that uses breath connection and body weight to build strength as well as flexibility. SPORTSYOGA® SportsYoga® will take your sport, fitness, strength and flexibility to another level and you will create balance in the body, muscular groups, alignment, mobility with enhanced strength. Prepare to work and be challenged. Reap the rewards in the rest of your sport or fitness performance. YOGA BASICS A relaxing end to your day or an amazing way to start your yoga practice. Come and find out more about the world of yoga and learn new postures. Nobody loves people arriving late for YOGA Please do not enter a YOGA class once it’s started.

UL SPORT RUNNERS Whether you enjoy the occasional jog or you are seasoned participant in longer running events, why not join our experienced running coach Derek, in our exciting, new UL Sport running club. These sessions will motivate you and assist in taking your running to a new level in a fun and focused environment. STRONG BY ZUMBA A new fitness innovation which is ideal for those motivated by music (but is NOT a Zumba dance class). An interval class, where each move is matched by the beat of the music. Come and try and see if you like it. ZUMBA is dance fitness at its best. Beginners start anytime. MIND BODY FUSION A blend of Yoga based postures, Fitness Pilates and relaxation, set to ambient music. Suitable for all levels. 29

1-1 PERSONAL TRAINING Train 1-1 with a UL Sport Personal trainer and you will benefit from a truly personalised workout experience. Learn how to safely and effectively work out so you don’t waste time at the gym with little or no results. Your trainer will motivate you, track your progress and ensure you complete each exercise with good technique thereby maximising training effects and preventing injury. These sessions are fun but also get results. PARTNER TRAINING (2 INDIVIDUALS) If you prefer working out with someone why not grab a friend and split the cost of training! A UL Sport Personal Trainer will work with you and your partner to design a workout program that will challenge both of you. These sessions are a great, budget-friendly option that add an additional layer of motivation to your training.

SMALL GROUP PERSONAL TRAINING Why not train with some friends or bring a couple of family members? Our UL Sport Personal trainers will train up to 4 people at a time. You will still get plenty of attention as the group is small and sometimes having a bit of competition among friends is very motivating. The trainer still includes exercises that focus on the individual needs of each person. JUMPSTART Our Jumpstart programme aims to teach children the fundamentals of movement e.g. jumping, throwing and running. Sports covered will include Athletics, Gymnastics with games such as Lacrosse, Basketball and many more. The classes will introduce children to a variety of sports movements, which will challenge their fine and gross motor skills. Kids with dyspraxia or other movement issues will be welcomed. Fun guaranteed!! MEDEX Our MedEx classes are designed for people who have had a cardiac event such as a heart attack, bypass or stent. Clients must be referred by a hospital based cardiac rehabilitation programme, cardiologist or GP. Referrals can be sent to medexul@healthmail. ie. For queries contact Sinead Kelly on 061213555.

HEALTH ASSESSMENT - EVALUATE TO SUCCEED A Health assessment gives you the opportunity to review your physical condition based on a wide range of health measurements. A health assessment can be booked by both members and non members. All assessments are accompanied by a complete breakdown and analysis of results. Tests Include: Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, Waist-Hip Ratio, BMI, Body Fat %, Vertical Jump, Flexibility, Grip Strength, VO2 Max testing. Only â‚Ź40 with report. V02 MAX AND LACTATE THRESHOLD TESTING We can now offer lab based V02 max tests in conjunction with the PE and Sport Science Department. NORTH CAMPUS Ireland’s largest all-weather floodlit facility This multi-purpose fully floodlit all weather synthetic grass park contains 2 full size 3G soccer pitches, 1 full size 3G rugby pitch and a full size 3G GAA pitch. This is the largest artificial grass development in Ireland to date designed to World Rugby, GAA and FIFA specifications. The 3G All Weather surface plays like natural grass and is designed for full contact. In addition to the state of the art playing fields, there is a Sports Pavilion which includes a Reception Area, 8 changing rooms (all with underfloor heating), 2 squad meeting rooms and The Pavilion Bar & Restaurant. UL SPORT ACADEMY The UL Sports Scholarships are designed to support elite athletes in pursuing and excelling in their sport while also undertaking study at the University of Limerick. SCHOLARSHIPS ARE OFFERED UNDER 3 CATEGORIES GOLD Support towards a training grant, accommodation, registration, sports science support, coaching and gym membership. SILVER Support towards a training grant, accommodation, registration, sports science support, coaching and gym membership. BRONZE Support towards a training grant, sports science support, coaching and gym membership. In addition, UL will support all the athletes with workshops and academic mentoring to assist them in achieving success in both academic and sporting careers. WHO CAN APPLY? The scheme is open to ALL current UL Students or to those applying to come to UL for the first time either through the CAO or transferring at undergraduate or postgraduate level. HOW TO APPLY? Sinead Loughran (Ireland Hockey Player). – "Having access to UL sports facilities and being provided a scholarship by UL, is something I’m extremely grateful for and proud of. For me, it’s not about the title of “winning a scholarship” or having financial support, it’s more than that. It’s knowing that your University is backing you and helping you to be the best student and athlete you can be, and that, in my eyes, is priceless. Utilising resources such as nutritionists, gyms, and pitches, allows you to tap into that 1% you need to enhance your game and take on any challenges you face. You meet different athletes on the same journey as you, and together, you push to be the best. Conducting a Medical degree is hugely time consuming, as is playing international sport. Having access to great facilities and support from UL staff, allows me to balance the two, and gives me the best chance to succeed both on and off the pitch." 59


WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES (WUG) This multisport event, which takes place every two years, is the second biggest sporting event to the Olympics and UL is very fortunate over the past number of years to have students selected to represent UL & Team Ireland at these Games. Our most recent success saw Thomas Barr win Gold in the 2015 WUG in Gwangju, South Korea in 400m hurdles! Thomas then went on the following summer to reach the final of this same event in the Rio Olympics- although placing 4th at that time he was crowned the 4th fastest athlete in the world such was the enormity of his run and fastest ever, Irish athlete, for 400m hurdles. Words of advice from Thomas – “Never give up on your sporting dream, the experience of my first multi-sport event, the 2015 World University Games, prepared me for the biggest sporting stage of my life, the 2016 Rio Olympics and for this I will always be truly grateful…. Next stop Tokyo 2020”.
