one magazine
Issue #1
editors letter at a stage in your lives when fashion and style is everything to you, it seems crazy that there isn’t a magazine that talks directly to the fashion forward young women of today.
fashion should be all about fun. getting dressed everyday need not be a chore, but more an opportunity to express who you are and explore what really works for you.
i am a strong believer in dressing for yourself and not just to please others. i can recall countless
times that i have brought pieces that were on trend but didn’t suit me; or a dress that was tight enough
to attract whatever boy i was interested in at the time but too restricting to dance the night away with
my friends. the best one of all; that impulse purchase that you just can’t afford and will probably never wear but every magazine that month is telling you just have to have it.
STOP. gone are those days, forget trends, forget him and forget that magazine! throw on a dress that you makes you feel perfect—even if it’s only perfect to you.
it’s all of the above that inspired me to create a magazine for young fashionistas who are sick of trying
to conform to an ideal that just isn’t for them. instead she wants to know about innovative up-and-comers, and how-to guides that are affordable and realistic.
the first issue of one is packed it with summer make- up ideas, recipes, places to go and things to buy. we had so much fun putting it together and we hope you enjoy reading it! until next time...

How would you describe your personal style? A schizophrenic mash up of old, new and eclectic clothing. What is your idea of a perfect day? Wake up at nine. Go to a beach side restaurant for a lovely breakfast followed by a nice long walk listening to my favourite music. I would then head into town for a peruse around the shops and then after hopefully finding something nice, I would head out for some Japanese, maybe with a friend if I’m lucky. Once I am home I would love to go for another walk in the forest behind my home and read a book. When I have accomplished that I would love to have dinner with the family, watch Virgin Suicides and go to bed. What has been your favourite show at fashion week and why? We have just had our Australian Fashion week and from what I have seen the best show was Miss Unkon “Girls With Kaleidoscope Minds”. I loved the bohemian aesthetic of the collection, which used a pleasantly surprising pastel colour palette. What is your favourite item of clothing in your wardrobe at the moment? Oh I just found and purchased these sparkly gold three quarter length pants for a ridiculously cheap price at an op shop which I am slightly obsessed with! Favourite city in the world and why? London. So much culture in the one place. Who is your favourite designer? Rodarte Why do you think blogging has become so influential? I think because blogging is a more personal and relatable form of media. Also the idea that it is less contrived and made by ‘real people’ makes it fascinating. What are the key pieces in your wardrobe? A modesty slip, knee high black socks, a chain for around my neck and a good black belt. What’s on your wish list? Maurie and Eve Clik Biker boot, shakuhachi bell sleeve cream lace dress, prada creepers, the row sunnies, monki lace bra and a cheap Monday chunky jumper. What is the best piece of fashion advice? Aim to please yourself. What are the perks of being a fashion blogger? The perks of fashion blogging is obviously receiving some lovely clothing in the mail, but what I also love is the support and comments I am sent from my viewers. Fashion Icons? Currently, Alexa Chung, Olivia from ‘Lust for life’, Sky Ferreira, Chloë Sevigny and Abby Lee.

blogger profile TRINI
How did you start your blog? I started with photo logging, uploading regular pictures of my friends and I in random moments like parties or trips. It became really popular mainly because of what I wore and almost all the comments I got were regarding my clothing, so after a few years I decided to make it about fashion and to move to a blog where I could upload more pictures and relate more to my readers. Later I decided I wanted it to be even more personal and more professional so I evolved to my on website.
What are some of the perks about being a fashion blogger? There are many perks! Free clothes, invitations to cool events, meeting influential people, even the opportunity to make a career, but for me the greatest of them all is to be able to do what I like whenever I want to and meeting people with the same interests as me that I wouldn’t have met in regular circumstances.
How would you describe your personal style? A bit childish but down to earth.
Who is your favourite designer? Karl Lagerfeld
Why do you think blogging has become so influential? Because bloggers are regular people, people are getting tired of fake celebrities and role models that don’t really represent them. People are looking for somebody that they can relate to and also look up to; someone who like themselves is by no means perfect.
What is your favourite season? Spring
What are the key pieces in your wardrobe at the moment? Black Chanel ballet flats, vintage denim shorts, and lately my Alexander Wang Daria bag. All of these garments can be worn with anything.
Who are your fashion icons? Diane Keaton, Edie Sedgwick, Twiggy, Coco Chanel, little kids and
true gentlemen.
What do you have planned for the future? I would love to have my own line of clothing someday or have my own column in a fashion magazine. What blogs do you read? I love streetstyle, The Sartorialist and Jak & Jil.

There’s nothing complicated about
Delilah
With a debut album and a solo set at Glastonbury to look forward to over the next 6 months, Delilah talks to Chloe Forde about her very simple life.
Delilah opens the Chase and Status track ‘Time’ with stunning vocals that are soft and sincere pulling you in from the first open. Her tone is effortless but yet has the ability to really make an impact. So it comes as little surprise that her solo track ‘Breath’ does nothing but send shivers up your spine. It’s one of those songs that if you play in your headphones it somehow draws on every emotion and pulls on all the heart strings in your body in just 4 minutes. Two tracks in and I am officially a fan. Breath is an emotional track that makes you feel like Delilah is allowing her audience to get to know her. On meeting Delilah she confirms everything I had imagined from listening to her music. She is easy going but in a very assured way, She has a calming and carefree presence that compliments a serious side to her personality. Within a few minutes of talking to her about her recent US tour with Chase and Status I realise that she is not only wise beyond her years but also ridiculously dedicated to her work. At just 20 years old Delilah has, amongst so much more, toured America, played at
Glastonbury, KOKO, Coachella and bestival, all of which she takes in her stride and is humble, almost embarrassed by her achievements, playing them down by saying: “Oh but there just small sets”. There is nothing small about this young lady’s talents, with a power house voice and a nearly finished album (“I have got six weeks to complete that baby”) of self written material that is touching and sure to resonate with anyone who’s ever fallen in or out of love. She signed to Atlantic Records at just 16 years old after what might be described as a stroke of luck: “I had been writing since I was about 12 years old and it was only when friends and family heard it that they convinced me that it could be something good. After studying music at college my uncle’s friend who was a sports manager said they were doing interviews at Buena Vistsa (Disney). I met Beyonce’s dad and he wanted me to do some Disney crap that just wasn’t going to work. After recording some demos at a grime producers studio in Tottenham Hale, by a stroke of luck an AR from Island records came in heard my track and he got in touch. Once one got in touch, they all did.”
16
one FEATURE or 3T. “Oh, I feel so young. Mine was Destiny’s Child No No No.” Her first purchase doesn’t come as a surprise. Delilah says that growing up she listened to a lot of r’n’b, soul, Latin music and drum and bass. Her dad owned an independent record label so she has always been surrounded by music. “It was a mix of people like Erykah Badu and the Fuggees and later artists such as Destiny’s Child and SWV.” But her dream collaboration would have been with Michael Jackson, “He’s just amazing.”
Delilah’s story is the kind that kids dream of, but things could have quite easily gone the other way. “My dad died when I was 12 and that was the only reason I started writing music. I didn’t know how to express the ways I was feeling. I hated school and to be honest I never really went in. Music saved me.” Delilah talks in a very honest and frank manner. She is not afraid of addressing her reality yet not employing it as her sob story. I’m interviewing Delilah on a rare evening off .“I’ve just back from tour so I have got a few days rest, but back tomorrow, my cabs coming at 8am. Very early.” I meet her at her mum’s house and her 3-foot tall puppy greets me. “Yes, she will grow at least another inch.” Then her mother appears, she is kind and welcoming and instantly makes me realise where Delilah gets her strength, warmth and self confidence from: the type of mum you’d want, she’s cool in a very uncringeworthy way and has an aura of an empowered woman who doesn’t take any BS. That’s my kinda mum! Delilah’s sits at the breakfast bar in their beautiful kitchen, She’s in house clothes: a grey tracksuit material all in one (far more Alexander Wang than Primark). Her hair is a golden warm mix of blondes and brown, and has a natural beach wave to as it falls just past her shoulders. She looks tired, (the effects of a 6-week long tour) yet beautiful and well groomed. I notice a matching mani/pedi and a simple diamond ring gracing her middle finger. I ask her how she manages to look so radiant after so many nights on a tour bus, “It’s good genes”. Delilah laughs, (see I told you about that mum!) “No, really, I’m just obsessed with a good routine of face washes, cleansing, toning, everything! I don’t wear a lot of make up when I’m on tour as it’s really not that glamorous, so I just believe in a good warm shower to end the day.” Delilah has amazing skin but promises me that it used to be awful.
“delilahs story is the kind that kid’s dream of” The conversation soon turns girly and Delilah tells me that at the moment she is pining after another Mulberry bag. Yup, you read right, another! She has a great sense of personal style but says that ultimately its just about being comfortable. “I like dressing up for shows and stuff but I think a big part of fashion is just about feeling comfortable, making an understated statement.” Fashion and music are becoming more and more intertwined and for any up-and-coming artist their look is incredibly important if they want to establish a name for themselves in this fashion savvy world. This said, not every girl needs to sport black lipstick and claw-like nails. “I feel like there is something really stylish about a girl who wears a white t-shirt and jeans. It doesn’t have to be complicated.” She may be easy breezy about her own style but she knows exactly what she wants in a man. She ohhs and ahhs as she describes how her boyfriend should dress and we agree on a hip-hop rocker guy but “he should never wake up in the morning and be able to throw on your skinny jeans. Nope, definitely not.” With men, music and fashion out of the way I feel like Delilah has really let me into her life and what really goes on in the busy life of Atlantic Records’ new signing. Even though in the last year she has travelled around Asia, America and Europe she still says that on a day off she enjoys a long breakfast and an even longer walk with her dog. It seems like Delilah has made a conscious effort to keep everything in her life, from fashion to music, as uncomplicated as possible. I don’t think I have ever heard a 20-yearold woman sing a ballad with such ease.
After a family meal we get talking about music and what inspires her when she’s writing. She says that everything from the rain to her own life dramas and when they run out she turns to the dramas of her friends. She is inspired by life. Delilah grew up as a 90’s baby living in London so I’m eager to find out what was the first CD she remembers buying with her own money. She laughs for a while and, in an attempt to make it less embarrassing, I tell her that mine was either Peter Andre
There’s no need for complication I guess!

my city NEW YORK by claire matern
Metropolitan Museum of Art, is one of my favourite avenues to walk. Neue Galerie on the corner of E. 86th street and 5th avenue is the best, not because of the exhibitions, which are wonderful, but because of the food. Café Sabarsky is the perfect location for a late lunch of creamy chestnut bisque while settling into a cozy booth table with the New York Times. Not much reading gets done though with all fabulous people watching opportunities, both inside the restaurant and out on 5th avenue. Evenings in New York are not to be taken lightly. In a city where literally anything can happen a girl has to know what she likes. I am one who prefers a quieter establishment to a thumping club and a favourite of mine is a little speakeasy in Long Island City, Queens called Dutch Kills. Having been introduced recently for my birthday I have fallen in love with the dark wood booth tables, low lighting, live music, and a fabulously full bar. The drinks menu is incredible but my suggestion would be to ask the bar tender for a recommendation. These guys are artists with spirits and bitters, which lucky me just happens to be one of my favourite mediums! In honor of my birthday a drink coined “A Touch of Grey” was mixed up for me, a wonderful concoction of my favorite flavors. Gin, violette, a dash of orange, and honey go down pretty easy. With a few drinks in me, marvelous chat from close friends and heels that desperately need to be taken off, the time to call a cab and head home eventually comes. New York might be the city that never sleeps but in order to live here a couple hours certainly doesn’t hurt!
With winter drawing to a close here in New York it’s been easier to brave the streets. Still though, the wind is no laughing matter and when out and about and in need of a cup of warmth I will duck into my favourite neighborhood bakery Almondine. A large hot chocolate or foamy latte with the perfect accompaniment of a chocolate éclair makes any winter day a little warmer. Sometimes a lemon tart is needed as well—a girl can use all the padding she can get in the blizzards we experienced this year. I will worry about bikini season when I begin to see grass pop out from the slush and snow. For now, bring on the treats! After pulling on my Hunters and buttoning my coat I will often venture to Prospect Park, the largest in Brooklyn, and right now just round the corner from where I live, perfect as it is the best place to watch the seasons change. The autumn foliage offers picture-perfect views when walking on a crisp day and snow-covered meadows now make for wonderful winter trudging. A short walk around the park brings me to one of my favourite childhood memories, The Carousel. With real horsehair tails the horses of the Prospect Park Carousel make me feel five years old again. Once a year I toss my embarrassment to the side of being the tallest child in line and take a ride. If I’m in the mood for an “indoor day outside,” I will take the subway into Manhattan to stroll around the museums on the Upper East Side. Museum Mile, the twenty or so blocks chock full of different galleries, including the

my city LONDON by chloe forde
crepe place in Hampstead’; my usual is the milk chocolate with hazelnut and extra butter, always order the extra butter. It’s the perfect way to spend one of those quiet summer evenings with a group of girls gossiping away and the fact that its open until at least midnight means its filled one of my many midnight cravings with the girls.
When settling down to write a piece about how wonderful London is, the city I have lived in for over two decades, I suddenly feel somewhat... stuck. Not because I don’t love London, but just because I’m not exactly sure what it is that makes me love it! That said, maybe that’s exactly it, the fact that you can’t quite put your finger on what it is that makes the big LDN such a fabulous place to live in. London has just got that vibe, even in the wealthiest neighborhoods; there is still something completely raw about London, the fact that there are streets with beautiful homes and gorgeous driveways and then at the end of the road a wall of graffiti and a crazy guy peeing in the corner. Classic!
Aside from stuffing my face at any given opportunity I love London because of the people, we may not be known for being the friendliest bunch, but boy are we eccentric. I used to sit in Borders, order a tall skinny Caramel Latte from Starbucks with a stack of magazines and I’d spend 20 percent of the time flipping through Vogue and i-D and spend the rest of time people watching. Its seriously the best pastime, London is full of different people, I’d hear a billion languages, see a ton of different styles, hair colours, gadgets and accessories. London is a place where you can truly be yourself, nobody cares if you have blue hair or enjoy wearing your pyjamas to do your morning coffee run, I think everyone is just too wrapped up in their own little world… but that’s just fine.
The good thing about living in such a large city (and having the handy ol’ oyster card) is that finding new places to eat or shop can pop up when you least expect. One of my favourite places is an old crepe stand in Hampstead, North-West London. It’s a little hut on the corner of the high street and every time I’ve been, there’s a queue wrapping round the block (which is always a good sign). But trust me, it’s worth the wait. The hut has no name, just known to its greedy customers as ‘the amazing

my city BARCELONA by laura roca alonso
I love everything about Barcelona; the weather, the people, the food and just the whole Mediterranean vibe in general. Barcelona really is a unique city, an exciting collage of different areas where there is always something to do no matter what mood you are in. Even the beach is only a short tube ride away, how good is that?! Gracia is perfect if you are looking for a friendly neighbourhood feeling and charming narrow pedestrian streets, they have great al fresco nightlife and my favourite Japanese restaurant in the world, Kibuka! Its super cheap and the perfect place to fill your stomach with good friends and good conversation. El Born is the place to go if your in need of a boutique shopping session or drinks with the girls, if I want to switch it up a bit I love going to Gòtic or Raval areas for a more underground kind of night- think Camden town but in the sun, amazing! On a lazy weekend there is only one place to be and that’s the colourful food markets such as La Boqueria, where you can buy everything from fresh groceries to exotic fried insects...yummy! Barcelona is such a lively place with so much culture to offer, there are endless small gigs happening all of the time, art galleries, museums, musicals, etc not to mention the modernist architecture that can be seen all over the city, especially Gaudi’s famous pieces. Barcelona is a place to explore, to get lost and to simply enjoy!! Buen viaje!

THE BOY It’s a documented saying that the best accessory to any woman’s outfit is a well-dressed man. Whilst some believe this to be untrue and would in fact say that the best accessory comes in the form of shoes, bags and jewellery. There is something terribly pleasing about seeing a guy who knows how to rock an outfit. So the hotspot for you and your boyfriend has changed from the sofa (accompanied by pizza and chocolate) to a restaurant! Major steps in your relationship are being made. Long gone are the DVDs and in their place are heels and red lips! You’re going out. So the outfits picked: Black skinny jeans, a loose fit grey t-shirt, wedge heels and your brand new oversized blazer. You look amazing. Teamed with Red lips, a vintage clutch, and your hair in a loose bun. Once again amazing! So after the 5th time of calling your boyfriend to meet you at the door, the disappoint written all over your face as he tumbles down the stairs is more than acceptable. Not only are you not the biggest fan of his slightly too big t-shirt as it is but teamed with the jeans with a ketchup stain from a week ago is enough to make you want throw your wedge at him. This just isn’t going to work. Since when did making an effort become such an after thought for the men in our lives? Nobodies asking for an impeccable suit that rivals Chuck Bass (but hey if your offering we’ll take it). But a simple iron of the clothes or a pair of jeans that actually fit wouldn’t hurt. The perfect dinner outfit in a man consists of: chino’s that are fitted yet slightly loose, a clean yet plain t-shirt and a chunky knit cardigan. Shoes can vary between converse and boating shoes (certainly no church shoes or flip flops allowed) and of course the only accessory needed is the well dressed woman, which is already sorted. Its probably best not to force this style change on your boy, you need to make him feel he has made these changes all by himself. Allow the art of suggestion to be your friend. Be subtle yet convincing. If all of the above fails then it may just be a case of accepting that you are indeed the most fabulous, well dressed, innately stylish and effortlessly perfect person in this relationship. And to be honest there is never room for two fashionistas on the same sofa.

you are incredibly successful, how did it all begin? i worked incredibly hard and did lots of work experience at various magazines and newspapers. i
won the guardian jackie moore young fashion journalist prize as a student so that really helped as my first proper job was writing a fashion show report for the guardian newspaper on the paris
couture shows which they sent me to with their fashion editor. after that i hustled my way into a job at my favourite magazine sleazenation where i ended up being fashion director. i’m quite a brave soul and always taught myself how to get ahead
-
i remember phoning galliano’s pr in paris and
telling him i wanted to interview him when no one had a clue who i was. i guess i just believed in my own ability and that’s important in something as competitive as fashion. later i started supersuper with the ex-editor from sleaze and the rest is history.
you seem to have your finger in every pie, what do you love most about your job?
the fact that i created my own style of magazine and i don’t feel like i have to compromise
because the style inside it is reflective of the way i see the world. i also love working as basso and
brookes stylist and muse
- i’ve travelled the world with them and we have done shows in brazil,
shanghai, korea, russia and berlin. also i got the chance to develop other skills like music. how many fashion directors can say they have their own rock band?
so what’s a typical day at work like for you? sometimes i’m just in the office all day having meetings, sitting at my computer, drinking coffee
and looking at lookbooks etc. the next day i might be shooting somewhere and the day after that i could be at portugal fashion week singing at a fashion party like i will be next week!

ER WOMAN this maybe a stupid question but who is your favourite designer? basso and brooke of course! i love them dearly, but also because they are the true masters of digital print. i hardly go through a day without wearing a basso and brooke something or other.
what change would you like to see in the fashion industry? people’s attitudes towards a more womanly body shape, fashion fetishises youth and that’s a bit of a shame.
what do you love and hate most about the fashion industry? i would like to see a bit more depth in people sometimes
-
a bit more emotion
and less superficiality. but i do love the effort that people go to to create something beautiful and exotic
what are your go to items in your wardrobe? cut off denim shorts

do you have a favourite song lyric of all time? this whole bit from roxy music
OUT OF THE BLUE I don’t mind If it’s only A passing craze Throwaway lines Often ring true If I were you I would stay For a little while I you were me Would you walk out In style?
where is your favourite place in the world? moscow was amazing
- quite colourful and scary but i love mexico too.

THINSPIRATION An incredibly famous woman once said “‘Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”. These precious words have since caused havoc on the internet. The sentence has been reblogged thousands of times and has acted as a source of ‘thinspiration’ (or commonly known as thinspo) for many teenage girls. Chloe Forde explores just how powerful these blogs really are.
jog, we know you can do it.” Katie, a successful blogger, compares her blog and the lifestyle that goes with it to a netball team at school. “We all encourage each other, I seriously couldn’t have done it without the other girls”- kind of like a fashionable Weight Watchers. When Katie says ‘it’, she is referring to her weight loss. Katie is aged 14, 5”9 and is 8.5 stone, however in the next three weeks her aim is to be 7.8 stones. This will leave Katie under her BMI and the rapid weight loss is extremely unhealthy for her body. Worse than the effect this lifestyle is having on her physically, is the effect it is having on her mentally. Katie says she doesn’t have an eating disorder, but does feel guilty every time she eats and hopes that in two weeks time her collarbone is more prominent when she wears her bandeau American Apparel dress at her best friends’ 18th birthday.
“You can tell me that I don’t need to lose weight, that I’m really skinny, but at the end of the day it’s not you who’s standing in front of the mirror, staring in disgust at the fat girl looking back. I’m unhappy so I will do whatever I can to be happy with my body.” Rebbecca* writes a very popular thinspiration blog. She is 18 years old and is “definitely not an anorexic.” A thinsipration blog is the term used by its readers and followers to define a blog that gives inspiration to those with one goal… to be thin. Like any magazine that has a hope of being successful, One magazine went about setting up all of the relevant social networking pages. It’s whilst creating a Tumblr page for the publication that in the midst of reblogging a mix of style posts, the thinspiration blogs started popping up.
There probably isn’t a woman out there who at some point in her life hasn’t felt body conscious or even inadequate and the never-ending body conscious media outpouring doesn’t do much for a woman’s self- esteem. It would be fair to say that the fashion media have a lot to answer for. At the forefront of the ‘size zero’ debate the industry is more than accustomed to being laden with the blame for the increase in anorexia amongst young women.
Thinspo’s are dedicated to posting images of beautiful, yet very thin girls: pictures of outfits revealing rib cages, child like arms and spindly legs. These are done in a very different way to pro-anorexic sites and in fact may leave the reader with a slightly more uncomfortable feeling. The blogs are glossy, fashionable and could quite easily lull readers into believing that they are promoting a healthy lifestyle. The pictures on the blogs show a variety of girls in bikinis, amazing denim mini shorts, sheer vintage shirts and over sized Chanel sunnies. Very a la Alexa Chung, but the main focus being how tiny they look within their outfits.
Thinspo blogs confirm everything the critics say about the fashion industry. They glorify body images that can only be described as perverse and disturbing. Flicking though fashion magazines is often compared to slipping into a dream world. We fantasise about owning amazing designer bags, silk shirts and a variety of maxi dresses: the images of long flowing hair, clear skin and slim figures can often distort one’s conception of what beauty really is.
As well as posting pictures the editors of the blogs also update their followers with their daily calorie intakes, miles run and achievements made. “I now have hip bones! Yey.” The inspiration part of the title comes from the inspiring quotes bloggers post each other. “Put down the sandwich and go for a

“Being thin is at the forefront of thinspo blogs but the underlying
message that it is fashionable, cool and
attractive to starve yourself is the most disturbing part of all.”
In the UK alone 1.5 in every 200,000 children under 10 have been diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa and children aged between 14-16 account for one in every three patients treated in hospital with the condition. These figures are astonishing. Many people’s memories of being younger than 10 are of being carefree and oblivious to social pressuresnot of battling a mental illness that is in fact killing you. Catherine Lockhart, the mother of a 15-yearold, Jasmine*, who was diagnosed with anorexia at just 11 years old describes the pressures the media exerts as ‘disgusting’. Like many other children, Jasmine grew up in a loving family, which enjoyed eating meals together, every evening and who all had a healthy relationship with food. Catherine explains, “It was around the time of Jasmine’s 11th birthday that her father and I noticed the change in her behaviour with food, just small things like having fruit in the morning instead of toast and asking for extra vegetables with her dinner.” Small changes are unlikely to set off alarm bells in any mothers mind and, as Jasmine had always been small yet healthy, Catherine had “no idea of what was happening to my child”. Spotting symptoms of
anorexia amongst your friends and family is often harder to notice than you might think and sadly it’s only when the illness is in full swing that the signs are there. It was only after Jasmine accidently left her laptop open that this awful problem started to unravel. Catherine recalls: “Jasmine had joined a thinspiration blog. Using her webcam she had posted pictures of her spine and collarbone. I looked at these pictures and started to cry: it was only through the screen of the computer that I realised my daughter looked gaunt, sick and a shadow of her former bubbly self.” Whether or not Jasmine had issues with her weight prior to signing up to a blog is somewhat beside the point. The mere fact they aided her weight loss and encouraged her to ‘keep going’ is unsettling enough in itself. Being thin is at the forefront of thinspo blogs but the underlying message that it is fashionable, cool and attractive to starve yourself is the most disturbing part of all. Unlike anorexia blogs, where the images are of unhappy, pale and malnourished women, thinspo blogs post images of well dressed, tanned and happy looking, yet incredibly thin, girls. The fashionable ‘Weight Watchers’ tone these blogs take let girls believe that bloggers are their friends and that when everyone tells them to stop what they are doing they can take comfort in the 10,000 odd girls sitting behind their screens saying “put down the sandwich and go for a jog, we know you can do it”.

TOPKNOT
Along with the infamous scrunchy, piling your hair on top of your head is usually confined to the bathroom. Now seen on the likes of Whitney Port to Chloe Sevingy, the topknot is coveted in all style arenas. Whether it‘s messily gathered as high as you dare or slicked back a la Audrey Hepburn it’s this season’s hair fail-safe. The easy-going up do has graced the catwalks of Louis Vuitton, Erdem and Fendi and is sure to be sticking around for the coming hot months. Practical yet perfect for hiding bad hair days or if you just need a stylish way to disguise hair between washes. With influences from the ballet scene turning up in forms of nudes hues and romantic flowing skirts it only seemed right that the classic This timeless look owes itself to lots of hairspray and a handy cheat in the form of a hair doughnut to create that traditional rounded chignon.
bun got a look in.
The
history of the hairdo delves a little deeper than the catwalk and the ballet studio with variations seen all over the world but
mostly prevalent within Asia.
Whether it’s the Samurai or sumo wrestlers, the topknot or ‘chonmage’ has been used for years as a
traditional hairstyle in Japanese culture. Although a customary style for almost a thousand years, it has been adapted to many variations including turning the bun in to a fan-like shape or making the bun loop forward. In true androgynous fashion the knot was only ever seen on men where as women were seen decorating their hair with real flowers and ornate hairpins. In
Korea men wore their hair in
a long plait but when they found their leading lady and got married their hair was knotted up high.
How to create the perfect topknot Step One: using a hair band, put your hair in a high ponytail at the top of your head. you can make it as tight or as lose as you like, depending on how you want your topknot to appear. Step two: depending on whether or not you want it to look super sleek or more of a messy look pull out strands of hair to create a more wispy effect. Step Three: wrap the hair from your ponytail around the hair band and secure it with a few kirby grips. Step Four:
once everything is pinned in place use liberal amounts of hairspray to ensure that it stays throughout the day.
with thousands of years in the making, be sure to wear your topknot high and wear it proud.

HOW TO...
NAILS STEP ONE
Purchase a set of nail pens, if you cant find them on the high street they are all over Ebay, costing about £1 each.
STEP TWO
Keep your nail varnishes in the fridge to stop them becoming too thick and sticky
STEP THREE
Once you’ve selected your colours, give your nails a good file so they are all shaped evenly. Use the pointy bit of your nail file to push down your cuticles.
STEP FOUR
Always use a base coat, this will prevent your nails from becoming stained. Once dry apply an even coat of nail varnish. You can use a different colour on every nail or choose one colour throughout; this is entirely up to you. Apply two or three coats on each nail and leave to dry
STEP FIVE
Select the Colour pen you’d like to use, black is always a good one if you want it to be really bold. Shake the pen and squeeze the ink to the tip, this will allow you to make more fluid stokes when you start drawing on the nails.
STEP SIX
decide on the pattern you are going to do before you start (if you make a mistake you will have to go back to step one). Here we decided to go for a tribal print as it’s easy to do and very on trend, we used a variation of squiggled lines, polka dot spots and criss cross patterns.
STEP SEVEN
Leave the patterns to dry and then apply a top coat, this will help prevent the polish from chipping and will also leave your nails looking glossy! now get ready to have all your friends asking you to do it on them!

I also want to move on to using different fabrics and textures.” It would be fair to say that Whitney Port may have started as just another reality TV Star but she for sure isn’t finishing as one. How did Perez Hilton.com start? It actually got started by accident, I thought that it would be fun and fairly easy to start a blog so on a whim
I decided to give it a try. I think what instantly
separated me from other blogs at the time people was that people were using theirs as online journals,
“to-
day i had a bad day at work and went on an awful date” that never interested me!
I always knew that I
wanted to talk about celebrities because a lot of them are completely crazy and lots of fun to talk about.
What’s
a typical day like for you at perezhilton. com?
A typical day begins extremely early for me, I wake up at 5 am, which is actually sleeping in, I used to wake up at 4.30 but I have a new alarm clock, which has seriously revolutionised my life!! At 5am on the dot I’m up and on the go. I make a bunch of radio calls in the morning because I have a syndicated radio show that’s on a 150 channel in America. Then I have the website of course that I work on from 5.30 am to 3.30 pm, then I take a break to go to the gym. Later i work on interviews and other tasks that change daily, I try to be in bed by about 11.30pm. You work incredibly hard, maybe harder than people would originally think. Yah I don’t really go out to parties and events, I hibernate during from Monday- Friday. I really try and keep going out for the weekends. In the week I work, work, work, I’m completely in the zone, grinding and hustling. especially not during the week,
What is your ideal day on a day off? I
love going to concerts,
Last week I went to go see Friday night and then on Saturday I went to see Ricki Martin and onto a friends barbeque, that’s a very typical weekend for me. ke$ha on
Perez Hilton
Who
would you say is the best-dressed person in
Hollywood and the UK?
That’s a tough one, but in Hollywood I would have to say January Jones, she has been looking amazing on the red carpet, during awards season she looked stunning. I would also say that Dita Von Teese is flawless. For the UK It has to be Daphne Guinness, she isn’t everybody’s cup of tea but I love that she isn’t afraid of taking risks.
The most infamous celebrity blogger, Perez Hilton gives Chloe Forde an insight into what goes on behind the computer screen.
What are Perez Hiltons top style tips for summer? I’d say a fabulous hat, there were some amazing Americans got so inspired, you Brits do hats better than anyone! So if your going for a day at the park it would be fun to mismatch your outfit, wear cute jeans with a fierce statement hat to shield the sun. Fashion and Practicality all in one!

fashion The most coveted job imaginable, not even the numerous horrendous internship stories can deter you from running around a big city in Louboutin heels and your perfectly tamed tresses flowing in the wind as you pick up your editor’s Soya, (extra hot, no foam latte- and you better not get it wrong!) The coffee runs are really the smallest part of becoming successful in this industry. Relevant qualifications will help you to stand apart from those who don’t have them. Angelica, explains: “I didn’t go to university and decided to intern straight from college, but it’s been hard and I think sometimes it just looks better to have stuck out at a course, especially if you go to a well known fashion school.” But, with or without a university degree, what you will need to do is be prepared to work really hard and once the ball starts rolling its just about keeping up with it. Angelica’s first internship was with Glamour magazine: “You really need to get an internship, sending your CV absolutely everywhere is necessary! But once you get your first internship, if you work really hard and show how keen you are, it’s likely your boss will refer you on to friends within the industry.” Since then she has spent the last two years interning across a variety of magazines and has now been working for three months as a beauty assistant at Grazia Magazine. “I love fashion, but that’s the great thing about interning. Through it I learnt a lot about beauty and so when I heard about the job being advertised at Grazia magazine I knew I had to apply for it.” In order to get a job in the fashion industry you have to be 100 percent sure that you want it. It’s definitely not a place for the faint hearted. You’re likely to be working for free or very little money (so don’t give up that part time job just yet). At times you feel like you are working for very little recognition and you could be doing anything from 8-15 hour days. That said, the pay off will be worth it. There will be days when you feel like giving up but once you’re over the difficult hurdles a career in fashion can be exciting with endless opportunities.
television For a successful career in television you really need to get yourself out there. It’s a given that you will have to start at the bottom and work your way up (unless of course your father is an executive at the BBC). So start applying for internships at production companies or channels that you like. Isaac explains: “I dropped out of university after realising it wasn’t for me. I needed to be far more active and practical! I sent my ideas for TV shows to every production company under the sun and finally got a work placement at Remedy Productions.” Isaac was very lucky in his career as, after interning at Remedy, where he was meticulous in every task set, he was referred to another production company for a job in development. Television like many jobs in the media is all about putting in long hours of hard graft. Making countless cups of tea and holding wires on set will eventually pay off. Whilst interning it’s also an idea to start sending your ideas off to production companies who take unsolicited work. But protect yourself! Copy write your ideas and don’t let someone steal them from right under your nose. Isaac says: “ there have been a few times this year that I’ve been watching TV and seen a variation of the idea I sent in to the channel 6 months back! Now I’m a lot more careful about sending out ideas.”

In such a busy place why do I still feel so alone? 500 friends on facebook, 52 bbm contacts and yet you still have those days when you feel like the only person in the world. we all know what its like when you’re dying to talk to somebody about him, her or you and it just feels like everyone’s busy or might not understand.
I have been seeing this guy for about 3 months and we recently started having sex, I really enjoy it and I feel very comfortable with him. I’ve only told my two best friends, they both said that I should have waited because my boyfriend may only want me for the sex, I’m now worried he is using me? Lydia, 16 Essex
I’m having a problem and I don’t know where else to turn. Recently I think I’ve started to have feelings for one of my closest girl - friends and I don’t know what to do about it. A few months ago at a sleepover for a dare, we kissed and although I think she’s forgotten all about it, I can’t stop thinking about her. I get nervous when she’s around and I’m starting to worry our other friends will notice. I’ve had boyfriends before who I’ve fancied, but nothing serious...but now I’m wondering, am I a lesbian? And how do I make these feelings go away. I don’t want to ruin our friendship and make things uncomfortable, but I don’t know how I can change this? Amanda, 15 Brighton
Hi Lydia, Sex is a very intimate thing between two people so only you and your partner will ever know the true intentions of your sexual relationship. I will start by saying no matter who you are sleeping with it is very important to remember to be safe- I know you’ve probably heard it 100 times but you need to be sure to always use protection and there is no shame in carrying a condom. You mentioned these two girls are your best friends so I am sure they have your best interest at heart, if you really feel there is some truth behind what they are saying then discuss this with the guy, tell him your fears and if he cares about you I’m sure he will do his best to reassure you. Aslong as you are happy with this guy and your relationship isn’t based solely on sex then I’m sure you have nothing to worry about.
Hi Amanda, Your teenage years can be confusing especially when it comes to sexuality; you have a million and one feelings running through your body and this is totally normal. Not only will you be experiencing physical changes but your emotions can also be very confusing. I will start by saying whether or not you are into boys or girls there is nothing to worry about, along as your happy! Amanda having feelings for someone of the same sex is a very common feeling at your age and for some girls these feelings change but for some they stay the same. This may sound confusing but at your age everything is subject to change. For now I would advise you to enjoy your friendships and if they naturally progress into relationships then enjoy those too, for now don’t rush into anything.
My boyfriend is a bit older than me, I’m 17 and he’s 24, we have been together for nearly 6 months and have been having sex for about a month. He really wants to film us having sex, I really don’t know I how I feel about this, he promises he wont show anyone and I’m worried that if I say no that he will think I’m just being immature. Chelsea, 17 North London Hi Chelsea, Don’t do anything you are not comfortable with if your boyfriend doesn’t understand this then quite frankly he’s too immature for you. However if you are thinking about doing it and it’s a decision made by the two of you, I would suggest really being sure that you are 100percent confident in the trust between you and your boyfriend. 76

In such a busy place why do I still feel so alone?
I have become completely obsessed with looking at female celebrities, not in a sexual way, but I spend hours going through fashion magazines, blogs and websites to see everything from what they’re wearing to what they are eating. I know everyone loves celebrities but I think I’m obsessed. I really wish I was as slim and beautiful as them, its also quite distracting as I’m falling behind with coursework as the minute I open my computer I cant help but look at celebrity sites. Becky , 16 Sussex
I am quite confident about my body but I hate the fact that I’m really hairy. I have to shave my legs and armpits every day but I also have quite thick eyebrows and even a bit of hair on my top lip. Its very embarrassing and I really want to get rid of it. A girl in my class suggested shaving my arms, but im worried about stubble! Please help. Gurda, 14 London Every woman is different when it comes to the amount of body hair, but I do understand that having to shave every day is a bit of a pain! There are lots of different hair removal methods. With regards to facial hair, definitely do not shave it- you could try threading or tweezers! But do remember that thick eyebrows are very on trend at the moment! With body hair some women prefer waxing, as it takes longer to grow back. Its different for everyone, so I would say it’s a case of trial and error.
This is a very common problem so don’t worry there is nothing strange about what you are describing. We are presented with images of famous people that portray perfect lives and it’s almost like reading a Cinderella story. The worrying part of your problem is that you say that you wish you were as beautiful as these womenyou need to remember that often the images you are seeing have been photoshopped to perfection, secondly these celebrities are incredibly wealthy which allows them to have access to personal trainers, make up artists and stylists- comparing yourself to these women is unrealistic. If you really feel this problem is distracting you from your own life, I would suggest starting a new project, something that you love that doesn’t involve the Internet and if you have to be on the computer for coursework, disconnect your Internet.
I spend a lot of time on Facebook and this has started to spiral out of control. I don’t ware the same outfit twice because I’m worried that people will have seen the pictures on Facebook. Even when bored at home I always put the opposite on my status. Im not a stalker but I spend hours looking at ex boyfriends and there new girlfriends, sometimes I find myself looking at pictures of people I don’t even know. Am I crazy?! Taylor, 20 Kent No Taylor, you are not crazy at all, I think a lot of girls could agree with you that at some time or another they have done the same. Facebook can be very addictive, I would honestly say you should take the brave steps of disabling your Facebook for a short time, this will make you realise that you don’t depend on it as much as you might think.

JUST EBAY IT How often do you look through your wardrobe thinking about the items that you really don’t like anymore? Clothes that you would much rather weren’t looking up at you whilst you try and decide between a plain white tee and a plain black tee (serious decisions being made here.) Yet still you don’t part with the pitiful items because of the hard earned pounds that you spent on this impulse purchase of a green felt hat! EBAY IT. Not a new phenomenon we know, but definitely a prospect that for many is just a bit blughhh! Where to start? How to do it? All just a bit scary! The team at One Magazine have just discovered how easy Ebay actually is and now we are literally obsessed! Ok so on a sneaky shopping trip I found a pair of shoes that I literally skipped a heart beat over, the price...humn not so much, £85! I backed away form the shoes, feeling like I was saying goodbye to a boyfriend at the airport! Sad times! Not so sad when I got home, pulled up e-bay and there they were £19.99! You’ve got to be kidding me! And sure as anything they arrived five days later, in the box, unworn and happy to have a new owner. So in order to make back that £19.99 (£22 with postage and packaging included) I decided to whack up some of my own bits, trifling through the wardrobe I found a pair of skinny levis, a Topshop clutch bag that I’ve given up on and an oversized American apparel t-shirt that hasn’t seen the light of day since I brought it home. Up on Ebay, 5 days later and wham I’ve made £65 from three items brought a billion years ago and were collecting dust behind new items brought less than a billion years ago!
Step-by-Step Ebay guide Log on and set up and account. Really easy unless of course you spend ages trying to think of a fancy log in name Have a look around at other people’s stuff. How much do they sell for? What kind of titles are they using “Brand new amazing Topshop clutch” usually works a bit more than “brown old bag that I don’t want anymore” Go through your wardrobe and find a few bits that have no use in your life anymore. Pull out the trusty iPhone, bb or digital camera and snap away! Try and get images of every angle of the item, if its something designer then make sure you have enough images so the buyer knows it’s the real deal! Click sell item, upload the images, add a description and click “list your item.” Download the Ebay app to your phone and click refresh every 5 seconds! Watching people bid can get seriously addictive
GOOD LUCK LADIES!

cupcakes or

Chloe Forde talks to Giselle Le Pompe-Moore about Fashion and Food.
Whenever I come across people that are really good at things, I’m always in complete ore of them. Seriously, anything ranging from table tennis to some sort of championship gardener, I always feel inspired to ‘start a new hobby.’ So over the years I have managed to accumulate an eclectic mix of nail kits, water paints and a heap of electronic devices. So when I came across Giselle La-Pompe Moore, editor of food and fashion blog, lipstickandmarzipan.blogspot.com I could feel a trip down to John Lewis coming. A cute set of cake cutters, weighing scales, cupcake holders… really the spending could go on forever. Giselle has been a ‘foodie’ for longer than she can even remember; her Grandmother really sparked her love for all things yummy! “My grandmothers a pastry chef, so I have been baking since I was about four years old. She always made wedding and birthday cakes. She used to cater the most amazing parties so I very quickly learnt how to ice a cake!” Giselle, like most good cooks watched somebody in the kitchen and picked up the skills needed, the rest is all down to being really passionate about food and of course a fair bit of trial and error! Lipstick and Marzipan is a mix of high fashion and brilliant food. It’s a great website to visit if you want to keep an eye on latest trends, fashion show reports and Giselle’s amazing vintage finds. I would say it’s an equally great site for recipes and pictures of food that will literally leave you starving. The blog has been running for nearly three years and now has a regular following from both the food and fash packs. The mix between fashion and food is great, and both are discussed in equal measure. When talking to Miss. Moore we spoke about both food and fashion and even how the two worlds have collided, “Because we are bombarded with food images all of the time, it has now become more visually enjoyable rather than just a necessity. The likes of Nigella and Jamie have really made food become a whole culture of its own” Whilst Giselle is borderline obsessed with both and food and fashion, she admits that if she had to choose between the two, it would have to be fashion. Like many women she says she enjoys the idea of playing dress up, escaping into a difference character all aided by specific outfit choices. Giselle leaves One Magazine with one of her favourite recipes, YUMMMM!

Melting Meringues & Raspberries
Summers here and a fresh fruity desert is exactly what you need after a barbeque! Topped with berries its the perfect end to any summer’s day
Serves 6 Ingredients 2 Egg Whites Pinch of Salt 150g Caster Sugar 1/4 tsp Vanilla Extract Pink/Red Food Colouring
Method 1. Preheat the oven to 140C/Gas mark one and line two baking sheets with parchment/greaseproof paper. 2. Put the egg whites into a bowl with high sides and add a pinch of salt. Whisk this until soft peaks form. Then add the sugar gradually, a tablespoon at a time. Make sure to whisk after each spoonful. Keep whisking until the meringue has a satin finish and forms stiff peaks. Then do the bowl over head move to make sure its ready. 3. Fold in the vanilla extract with a metal spoon, then scoop with a spoon or piping bag into individual meringues on the baking sheets. 4. To add some swirls, dip a skewer into the food colouring and swirl it through the meringues. 5. Bake in the oven for 30mins, test one by pressing the bottom of the meringue. It should be crisp, but break with slight pressure. 6. Turn the oven off and leave the meringues in there to cool completely, with the oven door slightly open. *Lipstick & Marzipan Tip* I served these with greek yoghurt and raspberries, but you can mix some whipped cream, raspberries and icing sugar together and sandwich this between two meringues...yum.
