URBAN REALITY MAGAZINE

e d i t o r’s note A new beginning, good luck to my predecessor …

I

t’s been a long year at Urban Reality Magazine - ups and downs

came with lots of learning and great fun. And now twelve issues later Kele decides to leave… first thought “OMG what is she thinking, we won’t survive, I wonder who’s taking over?” only to find out that I am next in line. Initially I was nervous even thinking to turn the offer to be editor down because it came exactly when I was preparing to move to Cape Town, but then I thought of how I have always wanted to be in journalism and even though I thought this promotion would come much later in my career opportunity it came an I grabbed it! So here I am it’s my first issue as editor and I’m excited and now there’s no stopping me. It’s not going to be easy but anything worth doing will always challenge you and besides I studied PR stakeholder relations and writing is my thing and I’ve got a great team and super contributors so I’ll be okay. Just to put your worries at ease, I promise to work hard with you and for you, especially to ensure that the magazine is kept at the standard and quality you’ve come to know and enjoy. Well… Here goes nothing!

PULL-HER-DOWN SYNDROME… By Lindiwe Dhlamini

I

t could have been

named in accommodation for both gender groups by calling it the ‘Pull Her/ Him Down Syndrome’ but seemingly, it is most common among females than males in the society regardless of status hence it is thus called the ‘Pull Her Down Syndrome.’ The first black female talk show host in South Africa, Felicia Mabuza Suttle is the one who first publicly made mention of this term and currently it has become such a common topic that it was even recently discussed on the SABC 3 chat show with Noeleen Mahlowana Sangqu on 3 Talk, was aired on Kaya FM and was also held in discussion on SABC 1’s youth empowering chat show, SHIFT. It has been discovered or rather observed that women have developed certain tendencies of not supporting each other. Furthermore, those who achieve fame and status more perceive the ones below them as jealous of them and do not encourage them to also work hard in order to reach their level of status. Same applies to the ones who are still striving to make it in life, be it with regards to their career paths, ambitions or in terms of their social status as to who knows who and who has achieved what on whatever grounds. 4 | JULY 2013 URBAN REALITYMAGAZINE

The human dynamic behind pulling others down is simply on the fact that if people can make less of others, it makes them feel more than and better than they are. Women in lower positions in the working industry feel that the senior ones are always being pulled up the ladder, leaving them with little if not nothing to do to ease the way for those at lower levels. Women are guarded by major insecurities, they tend to be selfprejudiced which makes them perceive men as more knowledgeable and adequate than their female professional counterparts resulting in them viewing men as being more superior but at the very same time, complaining about how much women are being taken for granted in the workplace. Clearly this is not just a problem which ends between females but it happens that from time to time, men are being brought into it making women appear as weak.

WHY NOT PULL HER UP? Gil Markus once made an important observation stating that when women have conversations, they focus on the 5% of what is not working in their lives whereas men are likely to focus on what is working. As much as women proudly say out and embrace the “Wathint’abafaziwathint’ imbokodo” (you touch women, you touch the nation) line of women empowerment, they themselves do not empower each other. Unintentionally eavesdropping on a conversation between two young women the other day; I overheard one say to the other “That hairdo really looks good on you hey, but it doesn’t go with the outfit you have on today.” Wouldn’t leaving the compliment as it is without the BUT be more appropriate? Why does it have to be the case that one compliments and criticizes simultaneously? Why does there always have to be a line of disappointment to go with whatever statement a women utters? Or is it maybe because disappointments occur only amongst and between women? I refuse! From a recent hilarious email I received from a friend, it has been stated that there are 3 different categories of women, which is the Chicken, the Hen and the Swan. As explained;

1. The Chicken This is the female that males are easily attracted to and gets by on pure looks. She portrays characteristics and

traits of sexiness, is quite feminine but lacks brains. 2. The Hen This kind of female is the total opposite of the Chicken. She is goal oriented and career driven but lacks the domestic qualities that a woman should have. 3. The Swan This kind of female is a perfect union of both, the Chicken and the Hen. Although she may be flawed, the great qualities that she possesses usually make up for what she lacks. This brought it to my attention that women should just attain acceptance and accept the fact that we are all different and should thus accept each other’s differences and move on with life. It’s just unfortunate that we aren’t all blessed similarly but some may be pretty faces with the lack of brains, some it may be the other way around and for the very fortunate, they may acquire both so pulling each other down is not a constructive move at all. Women have great capabilities and are on the verge of making the greatest contribution to the corporate world at large therefore for those who stand tall, let us support them and for those who are still trying to find their place and make their mark, let’s support them too. If you spend most of your time pulling other people down, you will have very little left to pull yourself up.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH...

I

n his Long Walk to Freedom autobiography, Former

South African President Nelson Mandela enlightens readers about a tale told to him, by his elders, when he was still a child, The story was of an old and fragile Chief Zwelibhangile Joyi who according to Mandela was so old that his wrinkled skin hung on him like a loose-fitting coat. That statement made by the African National Congress (ANC) stalwart is ironic as he now finds himself in the same shoes as old Joyi. Many debates have ensued and concerns expressed about Tata Mandela’s health condition in the media in recent times. Many people feel he should recover to live a couple more years; However many other people, including his long-time friend and fellow freedom fighter, Andrew Mlangeni, feels that Mandela should be left to finally rest in peace as he’s done all that he could for South Africans and the rest of the world. According to Mandela’s bodyguard of more than a decade, Warrant Officer Shaun van Heerden, various people around the former president cannot be trusted. The bodyguard was surprisingly asked to go home when his services were no longer needed. Van Heerden recently told the City Press that the elderly statesman is literally being kept away from the majority of his friends by doctors from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), comparing Mandela’s exclusion by the SANDF doctors from family and friends to that of when he was serving a life sentence in Robben Island. Van Heerden went on to explain how Mandela’s surgeon-general, Dr Vejay Ramlakan, was livid that Mandela had gone onto the soccer field at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in his last public appearance; being escorted by security guards instead of medical staff.

6 | JULY 2013 URBAN REALITYMAGAZINE

You’ve got to commend the man he keeps going strong through sickness, health and what have become regular visits to the hospital and the bitter conflict and wealth-possession arguments among the Mandela family. Mandela’s long-time friend and Rivonia Trial lawyer, George Bizos, has also been in the mist of the constantly unfolding drama of the Mandela’s. Mandela’s daughters; Makaziwe and Zenani Mandela, have taken the lawyer to court, according to the Mandela siblings. Bizos was not properly appointed by their father to be the major shareholder and the director of Harmonieux Investment Holdings and Magnifique Investment Holdings. In return Bizos accused the lawyer of the Mandela daughters, Ismail Ayob of paying R150 000 each into Makaziwe and Zenani’s accounts from a Mandela Trust account without Bizos’ authorisation. It’s very unfortunate how people close to the iconic freedom fighter seem to have their own agendas regarding the Mandela legacy. The vast and varied reasons why some people want the former president to stay alive shall remain a taboo matter. Mandela is world renowned for his persistent fight against the apartheid regime for a democratic society in South Africa and his philanthropic work after his release from prison. Why can’t we just let things happen as they happen then offer our commentary, this is one situation that requires to just pray for a situation that God or whoever you worship or don’t worship thinks is best for Mandela and everything else will fall into place.

REVIEWS MUSIC Artist: Chris Brown Album: X Record label: RCA Records Release date: 16 July 2013 Description: With Chris Brown’s new single “Fine China” making it onto the playlist of numerous radio stations globally and causing major airwaves, Breezy is set to release another album this month titled “X.” According to him, “X” may be considered almost as a reject as the album defines who he is, whether X may be a symbol of being forbidden or being blunt, it is who he is now. He has tried by all means not to lay focus on past experiences and events but he is now transitioning as a man who has managed to overcome his trials and tribulations. As he best describes it, he states that it is the best unspoken voice from him. Chris Brown draws inspiration from successful and very well-known artists such as Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke and Stevie Wonder hence he has major plans of adding a little bit of a soulful twist in the album to deliver great quality music to all his fans out there. In an interview with Ebony Brown, Chris mentioned that this album is set to take his music in a different direction and that he intends to change his sound from popinfused and sexually explicit to a much more soulful, mature and vulnerable theme for the album. For this album he has worked with producers and artists such as Timbaland, Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Wiz Khalifa and Pharrell just to name a few and as much as many of Breezy’s fans out there are excited for the album, if you are one too, so you should be. 16 July… X has been marked on the spot!

IS IT THE SIZE OF THE BOAT OR THE MOTION IN TH OCEAN? BY DIPUO MONGOAI

Some topics just never get boring; they mature as one gets older just like good wine. Which brings us to our next commonly discussed topic, sizes of “dicks “, oops excuse my blunt language to our sensitive readers, but hey it is what it is. Now I know that’s one topic that women can go on and on about and reach no equilibrium, different strokes for different folks. We did some research and asked a few ladies what their opinion regarding this topic is? Here is what our sisters had to say: 10 | JULY 2013 URBAN REALITYMAGAZINE

SIZE OR MOTION?

*Mpho-Single, Jolly and Outgoing (26)  She says small penises are a turn off period; she does not care if he can use it or not, she needs to feel him and also enjoy his bigness which helps her come. *Lydia –A young mom who just got separated, but is dating again. (24)  She believes as long as the wand can work the magic, she also goes on to mention that it depended on what it is you’re in the relationship for. You can never have it all, if she is treated well and taken care of what more could she ask for, small or not as long as he can use it. *Thimbu – Boss lady in a relationship always calls the shots (25)  Explained how she has never dated a guy with a small dick, all her guys has either been big or average. They made her come and she has always been satisfied. Personally thou because of experience she can safely say that big is the best, then again it’s all about enjoying the sex the coming is the cherry on top. There you have it; I guess its more about preference than it is about size. According to research by Richard Lynn, emeritus professor of psychology at Ulster University, most women believe size is a big deal in a relationship. The question that he directly addressed was, “is it about satisfaction or size?” shockingly most women were unable to provide a straight answer for this question. Lynn also found that for most population’s penis lengths were predictable and confirmed For example he speculates: The men with the largest penises are found in the Republic of Congo with a whopping 18cm on average. 2nd place goes to Angola, Gabon, and Central African Republic anywhere near Congo. 3rd place we have Colombia, Venezuela and Bolivia with an average of 17cm. Last and least (pun intended lol) drum roll please: Northern Koreans imagine. Despite what we think or what science may say size will matter, well at least to the partner you will be conducting this intimacy with. In summary I really think there is more to a healthy relationship than a huge penis, if it is big enough for you or it tickles (these puns) your fantasy hey. As long as you are satisfied ladies that’s all that matters. Now don’t go measuring your partner’s things to prove a point and make false speculation. Happy Mating!

MABOI A SPORTS LADY... This is what went down with Urban Reality Magazines interview with the gorgeous Mpho Maboi...

@URmagazine: You are such a great entertainer, is there anything else you do outside the industry? @mphomaboi: I don't really do anything outside the industry as such because I love sport so much. So most things that I do off TV are still somehow linked back to sport. At the moment I'm busy learning the ropes of being behind the scenes because that's where I'd like to eventually end up. I've also just recently been appointed as the researcher for Sports at 10 with Thomas Mlambo. A role I enjoy greatly. I'm an ambassador for Gauteng Sport and GSport for girls. @URmagazine: In the spirit of 67 minutes for Mandela Day, are you involved in any charities and what does giving back, give to you? @mphomaboi: At the moment I'm not involved with any charity because I had quite a lot happening at the same time and I needed to learn to cope with being a first time mother especially being a single mother, but I'm looking to get into doing more charity work. Giving back is of the utmost importance. They say it’s as equally important to give as it is to receive. @URmagazine: I like you, love sports I don’t really participate, but I’m a very active supporter and it does wonders for the way I relate with men… please tell the ladies what knowing just a little about sport can do for their relationships? @mphomaboi: Ha ha ha. Well for one, you never feel like the odd one out when you're out with your partner and you happen to be the ‘nay’ lady there. You never run the risk of embarrassing your man with an odd sporting question and he's more likely to want to flaunt you because you're more than just a girlfriend, you're a buddy too. @URmagazine: We love a sister of many talents, please tell us about your musical journey? @mphomaboi: My musical journey has been quite an interesting one. It all started when all I wanted to do was fool around behind the mic. I now get a lot of emails asking me to release another single or even an album. Unfortunately music is not my first love. I believe in doing things I am extremely passionate about and I'd rather people get albums from people who truly want to share their music with the world. Not someone who does this as a hobby, like myself. I do promise to release a single soon though.

URBAN REALITYMAGAZINE JULY 2013 | 13

MORE OF MPHO MABOI... @URmagazine: You are a young mom, what will you teach your child about growing up in South Africa now? @mphomaboi: Well for starters I plan to teach my child the importance of Ubuntu. No man is an island and you need to respect everyone no matter who they are and where they come from. I’d also love for him to learn about the rich history of our rainbow nation and how we came to be. Not forgetting the importance of travelling, especially a country as beautiful as ours. Travelling opens up one’s mind. @URmagazine: You’ve always been an indie gal, Y’fm and Supersport, what has your move to the SABC been like? @mphomaboi: So far it’s been amazing. I've been welcomed with open arms and I look forward to shining under this great brand. @URmagazine: Do you believe in the youth and their potential? @mphomaboi: Yes. I sadly feel that the youth does not believe in its potential. There’s a lot of talent and business ideas just waiting to be launched in order to make this country shine. @URmagazine: What does being a Gauteng sports ambassador involve and how to you plan to approach the role? @mphomaboi: My roles and responsibilities include the below but are not limited to:    

Attend and participate in their awards related programmes and build-up events. Make appearances in road shows, flash mobs and charity programmes Create an interest and promote awareness of the awards on several public & social media platforms and, Be the voice and face of the awards.

In a nutshell, promote sports and participation in our province. I plan to deliver the above mentioned and avail myself for any of the events that Gauteng Sports will be hosting or participating in. @URmagazine: I don’t donate blood because my mother contracted HIV from a blood transfusion using donated blood (true story); As SANBS ambassador how would you convert a sceptic like me? @mphomaboi: I'm so sorry to hear such sad news and no words can ever take something like that back or take the pain away. The only thing I can say however is that the blood testing process has changed a lot in recent years. The utmost care is taken in order to ensure that occurrences such as the one you mentioned are not commonplace and are in fact eliminated. Many mothers die during childbirth due to loss of blood. Being a mother myself, I know that no child deserves to grow up without a mother. Your blood can and will save a life and maybe someday even save yours. A great thank you to Maboi, for taking her time to have this interview with us, and wishing you the best your career ahead and as a mother!

IS POWER FM THE COPE OF RADIO? By Mongezi Mosotho

W

hen I 1st heard about

Power fm I thought oh well here's another radio station, then I heard they are starting off on a R90 million budget and I was stunned and I looking for my National Empowerment Fund application forms. What made me question their capabilities is their recycling of radio personalities and the fact that they've placed themselves on the Kaya FM and Talk Radio 702 level but then again what do I know about radio not to mention about the future. So I took to my contact list and spoke to a few people on their opinions, I've been closely looking at this station and I confidently believe they'll do well. 18 June saw curious minds like myself tune into 98.7fm as the station went on air for the 1st time and all went well without any technical glitches.

The Gauteng based talk station's target audience are your 25 – 49 year old South Africans who appreciate mature conversation, business talk and a bit of musical entertainment. I am not shy to say they got exactly that on the day of the launch. “We intend to spotlight conversations that take place in private environments but are not sufficiently shared in the public arena. We want to fill a gap that exists in broadcasting and be a platform for engagement for those South Africans who want to see their lives improve and a country at work.” - Given Mkhari, Power FM Chairman and CEO of MSG Africa Investment Holdings. Talking about recycled personalities Power FM will have the voice talents of Paul Mnisi (Rude Boy) we first heard and got to like him on youth radio station Y’FM and saw him on TV shows where he did alright, on Power FM hosts the

Power Weekend Breakfast. I wonder if the soon to be 36yrs old Mnisi still goes by the name Rude "Boy" Paul, I understand even Pro is not a Kid anymore. The station also has some not only talented but beautiful hosts like Ursula Chikane, Pabi Moloi, Masechaba Lekalake who is an experienced TV personality with a current affairs background - and must say the promise of experienced and entertaining personalities is a great selling point but I also hope it doesn’t make anyone confused - as if they’ve tuned into many stations. But that doesn't mean there aren't any new voices the likes of Tshidi Madia and Mandla Maluleke. Will they stand the test of time and comply with Broadcasting Complaints Commission of SA's codes of conduct? I certainly hope they live up to the standard of entertainment they’ve seem to be aiming for.

SPOTTING GOOD BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES... BY SIFISO KHUMALO

T

ake a second to think

about this... business opportunities are everywhere but does that mean all of them are meant for you? Before acting on an opportunity it’s wise to take time to evaluate yourself and see how much time you can commit to the business, how much start-up capital you can raise, and who among your network can help you in this venture and most important you need to be sure that you are passionate about going into business. Once you’ve spotted a good opportunity and determined the niche you’d want to go into. It’s time to look for opportunities that are in line with your skills and passion. Remember to focus on what you are good at, don’t pay attention to business ideas that are not suitable with your lifestyle and personality and are just not within reach.

If you struggling to find that big business opportunity, one of the questions you should ask yourself is; “What problem can I solve?” Think of ways to fix problems, create new products, be innovative and improve on existing ideas or products, be futuristic in your thinking maybe you can solve a problem that doesn’t exist yet or one that people haven’t identified as such, there are countless possibilities – all you need is creativity, focus and willpower. A business idea is useless unless it’s put into action. People spot good business opportunities every day, but choose to remain passive and daydream of the possibilities. Don’t fall into that trap. If you’ve came up with great ideas, keep in mind that they don’t go far if your time and money are invested in bad people and poor partners. Evaluate who you are getting into business with – partners, customers, suppliers and investors and even staff ;these stakeholders can kill

your dream if you do not do enough and careful environmental scanning. If you have multiple opportunities, compare the people involved in each one. Who can you trust more? Who will give you more time, effort and money? And who is as passionate about making things work as you are? When you’ve found the next big thing in business bear in mind that there should be mutual relationships between your life and your customers’ lives, between your dream and your employees’ dream, between your passion and the market demand, between your profit and your customers’ satisfaction, between your business and the business world. “Success does not simply come from only a ‘good idea’, It also comes from some basic knowledge about the product or service, good information about the market, and having the right business skills represented in the members of your team.”

H

ere is an extract from the

Under30 CEO Blog for new entrepreneurs to get better at spotting opportunities.

These are 5 tips to get you started: 1. Keep an Opportunity Journal Not every opportunity will be a goldmine, but keeping a list will help make sure you capture all the opportunities you find. Seeing the business opportunities you have spotted may also lead to more opportunities. You might see a connection you would have missed. Write down in a journal any experience you had with a product or service that wasn’t what you thought it should be. Also note how you thought the product or service could be improved. 2. Read about the Opportunities Others Have Spotted Entrepreneurs love to talk about the opportunities they have spotted. It is only natural because they are excited. Knowing how other entrepreneurs go about finding market opportunities will prime your brain to see more opportunities. 3. Ask Yourself “How Can You Make It Possible Making the impossible possible is what entrepreneurs are supposed to be good at. By making something possible, you will find new ways of doing things that others have not thought of. If these new ways of doing things involve products or services, you have found an opportunity. You should work to train your mind to ask, “How can I make this possible?” For example, if you don’t have the money to buy something, ask yourself, “how can I afford this” rather than saying “I can’t afford this” 4. Outsource Entrepreneurs are used to delegating tasks. However, they usually confine themselves to tasks within their business. Expand your perspective, and look for ways to outsource all the tasks in your life. The point here is not to use the services that you find (unless you want to), but to find a hole in the market. Try to find someone to do everything for you from mowing your lawn to grocery shopping, to running your business. Is there a company that can provide that service for you? Is the quality or price of that service great? If not, you found an opportunity. 5. Ask For More Than You Think You Will Get People are afraid of being seen as unreasonable. People think it is embarrassing to ask for more than you think you will get. But, entrepreneurs know better. They build their businesses by asking for more and more. So, ask for more than you think you will get. If no one can give you that, you have found an opportunity. Chocolate Rum and Raisin Pudding Melted butter, to grease

Vanilla custard, heated, to serve

150g unsalted butter, at room temperature

- Rum & raisin syrup

155g brown sugar

95g raisins

3 eggs

185ml water

75g self-raising flour, sifted

100g brown sugar

75g plain flour, sifted

1-2 tbs dark rum, to taste

60g milk chocolate, coarsely grated Method: Preheat oven to 180째C. Brush six 250ml capacity dariole moulds with melted butter to grease. Line the bases with non-stick baking paper. Use an electric beater to beat the butter and sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the combined flour. Fold in the chocolate. Divide among the prepared moulds. Use the back of a spoon to smooth the surfaces. Cut six 15cm square pieces of foil. Fold each piece to make a pleat in the centre. Brush the matt side of each piece with melted butter. Place, butter-side down, over the moulds and press firmly around the sides to secure. Place the puddings in a large roasting pan. Add enough boiling water to reach halfway up the sides of the moulds. Bake for 50 minutes or until a knife inserted into the centres comes out clean. Set aside for 5 minutes to cool slightly. Meanwhile, to make the rum & raisin syrup, place the raisins and water in small saucepan over low heat. Cover. Simmer for 10 minutes. Add the sugar. Simmer for 10-15 minutes or until syrup thickens. Remove from heat. Stir in the rum. Remove the foil. Turn the puddings onto serving plates. Drizzle over the syrup and top with custard to serve.

UR SPORTS AYA GQAMANE – LONG AWAITED TALENT

BY Mandilulame Manjezi

I

t only takes two scrambled eggs and a few

slices of toasted brown bread to get Chevrolet Warriors’ all-rounder, Ayabulela Gqamane, out of bed the sportsman with the most humble demeanour which he attributes to his upbringing. UR Magazine had the privilege of spending a morning session in the gym with the talented cricketer, who at the time was preparing for the upcoming domestic cricket season which gets underway after the winter period.

Born in the grassland area of Mdingi, a rural village on the outskirts of King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape, Gqamane relentlessly states that his recent success with the Warriors has been a dream he long had since cricket was introduced to him by his brothers at the tender age of five, he can now spends most of his time East London and Port Elizabeth where would often find Aya steaming in from his bowling mark in black and green Chevrolet Warriors colours with number 14 placed boldly on his back. Weighting only 65kg, Gqamane relentlessly keeps other Virgin Active gym members in Greenacres,

Port Elizabeth, astonished when they notice him squat a warping 150kg on the squat machine press. "It's all in the mind. People just don't seem to understand that you have to rise up to the challenge with positive mind and in doing so – finding joy in what could potentially hurt you" says Gqamane. It was the Border Cricket Union and its development academy which discovered Gqamane in Mdingi; granting him a scholarship to enrol at Dale College Primary School in King William's Town, one of Eastern Cape's top sporting schools producing a number of Proteas and Springbok capped players. After spending time at Dale College, Aya felt a change of scenery was needed, so in 2005, the sportsman enrolled into the prestigious Hudson Park High School where he matriculated in 2008. It was in 2008 that Ayabulela with his Border U19 cricket team achieved major success finishing first place in the inaugural CSA U19 Khaya Majola Coca-Cola Cricket Week. Soon after his U19 cricket week success, Aya was granted a firstclass debut two years later for Border against the bowling-dominant North West outfit in 2010. However, in the two years after he matriculated, Ayabulela decided he had to find himself as a person and in the processes went through many soul-searching moments in his life, one of those moments was when he went to England for a minor cricketing stint; playing Minor County Cricket for Coventry and North Warwickshire. "I stopped playing for a year after my matric year to focus on my social hockey. I was not really sure were my cricket was going at the time, despite me being in Border Cricket’s plans. It was only when I started to miss cricket dearly ,that I took it upon myself to go to England and play some club cricket there during the South African winter period," the player confessed. After a decent club cricket season in England, Gqamane then returned to South Africa where he surprisingly found himself being selected for the Border Amateur provincial team to tour

Potchefstroom in the North West. “I was surprised by the call up. I didn’t expect it whatsoever. But I rate because of the decent season I had in England and them [Border] needing an allrounder in the team, they opted to select me,” Said Gqamane. This tour to Potchefstroom would be the beginning of his rise to the top. After a sterling debut season for the Border outfit, Aya at 21-years-old secured himself a Warriors franchise contract; after being the third highest wicket-takers in the CSA 3-Day Challenge Amateur competition. After a year spent waiting on the side-lines, Gqamane was eventually called up for his professional franchise debut for the Warriors against the Highveld Lions in Johannesburg in the domestic Sunfoil Series. 4/46 and 7/24 was deservedly placed next to Gqamane on the scoreboard. In the next Sunfoil Series fixture against the Nashua Titans, the outstanding player again stunned by scoring a remarkable 86 runs off 89 balls batting as a tailender at no.10. These and many other consistent performances forced selectors to keep an eye on the talent; selecting him for the SA Invitational Squad to play against Pakistan in early January this year and the SA Emerging Squad which played in a triangular series against Namibia and the Netherlands in Windhoek. “I was disappointed not to have played against Pakistan in East London, but I was pleased to be selected for the SA Invitational Squad. It gave me great satisfaction as I would have never in my wildest dreams; dream that I would be selected for such a squad in my first season of professional cricket. Regarding the tour with the SA Emerging Squad, I got as much as I could from the entire experience. Building friendships as well with guys like Mangi [Mosehle] and Khaya [Zondo],” said Gqamane with a grin on his face. There's not a doubt that Gqamane lives for the gentlemen’s game and after his sterling debut professional season for the Warriors, I’m sure if Gqamane keeps up the hard work in the gym –he shall soon find himself wearing the green and gold.
