The Brave New World...

F

or all of us in the group, the meaning of welcoming is strongly linked with a positive value, an exchange, and a very human concept. It’s about a connection between the people, their environment and therefore, the things surrounding them. The notions of personal spheres and property physical or intellectual - are the core of this issue. The multiple ways of creating interactions and relationships between beings and things, places, signs or cultures are its language. Then, in order to analyze the welcoming process, we decided to look around through different medias, experiences and gestures surrounding us and speaking about it.

T

hus, four main axes could emerge at the very beginning of the study. The acquisition of material infos and images in situ was the first step.

Then, the collection of publications, newspapers and printed medias allowed us to create a first map on the topic. The last two steps consist in a exploration both of the web a of our home countries and cultures. This last method gave us a wider field of vision and took advantage of our different perceptions and backgrounds. In all these four cases, we kept in mind that a welcoming sign is not always obvious. We tried not to underestimate any kind of message, even though it was weak.

M

atching our datas during these two weeks, we began to draw a path, and to get a precise idea about the notion of welcoming and the several forms it can show. Indeed, we admitted at a certain point, that

the welcoming could be generated through a message, but also a sign, a word, and even a shape or a simple trace on the wall. It can be cultural, social, artistic and sometime conceptual. More than a notion, it’s a state of mind, an attitude that can be spotted in almost every type of media, physical or not.

I

n a world where communication increase everyday, cultural identities are more and more relayed by the technologies, and distances are shortened by the medias and the progress, welcoming has become a central issue, but also an essential tool for the new experiences our this world provide us. therefore, we can expect this notion to change and materialize into new approaches and values, probably more adapted to our everyday mutations.

n the last few years the Polytechnic of Milan and the Chinese University of Tonji have started a productive twinship, whose main purpose is to reach a know-how interchange between the students from both countries. Every year each University selects 6 or 7 students who have to follow a special program in the host University for an academic year. A new team from China has just been welcomed by some of us. ( See the picture above / below ). At first the foeign students need to understand the schedule rules and the organization of the Polytechnic. Their italian partners act as tutors also illustrating students’ life, meeting points, providing helpful tips. This cultural exchange promoted by both Universities is greatly appreciated by students and professors likewise and appears as the tangible evidence of a real global vision.

Checkmate and Knockout Tired of sitting for the boring chess game? Or the same punches in boxing? Well try both, chessboxing. It was found by a Dutch artist, Lepe Rubingh and not long after that it was launch in UK with 51 members. How it works, participants will box for 3 minutes then they have to focus and think strategically on to the chessboard for 4 minutes. It’s a thinking and fighting sports combined together. Once a checkmate before 6 rounds of chess or knockout before the 5th round of boxing

is made, then we have the winner. It doesn’t matter how bad you are in the ring you still can win on the chessboard by a checkmate and also the other way around. The idea is to train people to be able to adapt quickly to stress or panic and be calm when needed. Also to remind people that fighting is not just about the muscle, but need to be supported by strategic thinking too. “ChessBoxing Tournament News” “Packing a punch: the hottest fitness trends for 2009”

etroweb, the optic fiber network in Milan decided in June to launch an artistic project related to the underground network of Milan, the most wired city of Europe. More than 15 artists were invited to design the manholes that allow acces to the fiber network from the street. This colorful integration in the city landscape invite people to think about the changes happening sometimes under their feet, and not under their eyes. It's also a gift to people, citizens and tourists, a detail that you may notice or not, but also a colored spot in the grey environment of the city. Beyond the beauty that this contrast create, it's also a way to show the passer-by that the city cares about him.

There is this traditional track, used by farmers for going to interurban travels with animals and vegetables, this track is very colorful and made of wood its name is chiva, nowadays we don´t use it anymore as a transport, inside of it there is a huge party with a music band included, so meanwhile you are crossing the Colombian streets you are having fun and dancing Colombian rhythms inside the truck.

his project is held now in milan, and is divided in three steps. The first one is about spreading the message and the idea of the project. Everywhere in Milan blank papers were left, asking one of these three simple questions: “what are you doing” , “what are you thinking” and “what are you feeling”. This message invite people to think about their identity, based on the cultural changes and new social behaviors that the socializing networks have made. It interests specially on the widespread status update phenomenon. the second step consists in the collection of people’s answers, written on these papers. The third step is a event where photo shooting will be made, completing the posters and allowing IS to hang them all around the city. This project is a reflexion on people’s changes due to Facebook or Twitter, etc. It explore the very essence of people’s personality through a simple media and a short ad visual sentence about it. The place has dispenser machines where you can get whatever you want and eat at your place, the places lacks of chairs and table which means is not possible to enjoy your meals there. ritical Mass is a bicycle event, typically held every last friday of the month in more than 300 cities allover the world. Founded in San Francisco, the purpose of this event was to draw attention on the problem of welcoming bikes in the city. Seen like a "protest by cyclist reclaiming the streets", these events should be viewed as "celebrations" and spontaneous gatherings, and not as protests or organized demonstrations agreeing to Critical Mass participants. This organization differs from many others in its rhizomal - rather than hierarchical structure, and therefore, was often called an "organized coincidence". The routes are decided spontaneously and the movement is free from association costs and hierarchical leadership. The only requirement is to get a sufficient "critical mass" to ride…

People from completely different backgrounds join themselves every week around this generous meal, and share opinions, tastes or simply thoughts about their city or cultures. He answered, and precised then, that he will open a special facebook page for the animal. The impact of Fulvia was amazing! More or less 500 people were asking something about it on the night, and later, when we passed by in the same spot, people were saying hello, showing pride to know the name of the most crazy and trendy attraction of the night. This stuffed fox has now a facebook page and a lot of friends, that will probably get to know each-other through Fulvia. ost Italian architecture is characterized by massive buildings with thick walls, hiding their treasures inside. But in the last few years the opposite process has been catching on even in Milan. Important architects such as Claudio Silvestrin, Rudy Dordoni, etc. are applying a new vision of space abolishing borders and breaking down barriers. The concrete walls are replaced by glass, thus establishing a continuous contact between the inside and the outside. This can be considered as a further development, a new trend aiming at showing people our heritage, welcoming them to see who we are...

uided walking tours to see all the important sights is a common part of a visit in a foreign city. But g.w.t., which are dedicated to one special topic in the past of the city are not existing in Milan. You can find special tours dedicated to one special topic, but not in the context of the past. To learn something about the history based on a special topic could be a new trend in the infrastructure of tourism events. New people in the city get in contact with the past and can learn special information about the history.

riving a car in Milan to move into this kind of tiny and crowded city is nonsense. An alternative transportation could be a folding bike. You can fold your bike within a few moments and store it without using a lot of space in your flat. You can combine perfectly different kind of transports with this type of bike. Ecology and sustainability are now changing our mentalities regarding our habits and behaviors in the city. This smart trend coming from Berlin is more and more appreciated allover Europe, and soon in Milan!

One leader of the group, the organizer, has to stay sober, manage and control the group. The aim of pub crawling is to get in touch with new people and with different places allover the city. Tourists and local people are very fond of this kind of events, often used to welcome friends from abroad.

usic and food are the main ingredients for the 27th “Paolo Sarpi community party” but not only...Via Paolo Sarpi is the street crossing the area with the highest number of Chinese immigrants in the city. The yearly party is one of the nicest opportunities for the people living in that district to know more about their area and to make it known and appreciated to as many people as possible. This faovours new relationships and helps sweeping away cultural and social prejudice.
