stepping out Starting out shooting urban landscapes through a ‘dirty, fungus-growing screw mount’, the self-taught grandson of Kodak Rhodesia’s MD in the 60s reckons it’s in his blood. Riana Wiechers spoke to Myles Dicky about his first-ever exhibited work
Wanting to veer away from a ‘stereotypical exploration’ of feminine beauty, handicapped by time constraints and the scarcity of size seven ladies’ shodding, the simultaneously coy, gritty and evocative piece was put together in only one week. ‘The prescribed theme was ‘The Woman In Me’, and I wanted to take a contemporary approach’, says Myles. ‘Initially, I wanted to use heels to portray female stereotypes.’ There were many challenges sourcing size seven ladies’ heels, and in the end five distinct, characterful pairs of shoes were used instead. ‘The red shoes are sexy and playful, the blue more innocent. The black ones are harsh and sexual. I wanted the masculinity of the feet to contrast the femininity of the shoes. A well-presented mismatch.’
