not quite as much as I do) and they are such a perfect symbol for everything that is going on for us now. A treasure map, a trail, a path through the woods - maps help us show up, and get where we are going. We need a map so that we can be here.

HERE FOR OUR JOURNEY Tshuva is, before everything else, a journey. It isn’t just about saying sorry, or just about feeling bad, or about moving forward - it’s all those things together, and more. Each stop on the way is another step towards reaching a pure and vulnerable place in order to be recharged on the High Holidays.

HERE FOR THE BIGGER PICTURE Sometimes it’s easy to look only at ourselves. Especially in times like today, when we are all struggling with extra issues, we might forget that others have the same or more going on. A map reminds us of the lay of the land. It shows us where we are, and it shows us that there are other people out there as well.

WEEK FOUR: The Journey of Return

Though it is a month of internal reflection, part of that is remembering where we are in the world.

HERE FOR GOD’S REALM “The ruler is in the field” is a wonderful concept for this month. God is not separate from us at the moment. God will be, on Rosh Hashana. But right now, the divine is near to us, journeying through the land, meeting us face to face. When have you seen or felt the divine this month?

HERE FOR THE PATH One of the main ideas behind “tshuva” comes from the word itself, which means return. During the year we may have strayed from the path we would like to be on. Now, during these days leading up to the new year, we need to zoom out and look at the bigger picture - we hold the map, and we see where we were, and where we want to be. This is the time to get back on the path. To return.

HERE FOR X MARKS THE SPOT We are finding the place within us that is pure. That is where we want to get to that is what our journey is for. And in this time of disease and distrust, we all need to take time to look for that in ourselves and in others.

There is purity inside of all of us, and Elul is our time to find it and return to it
