prayers. Three more things to be here for.

HERE FOR CORONATION If during the previous month, God was in the field, meeting us and giving us a chance to be face to face with God, today is the opposite. “Everything that has been made will know that the divine made it; every action will understand that it was actioned into being by the divine” say our prayers. Today we recognize the force that empowers everything around us, the spark of inspiration that lives everywhere. Without recognizing that, our upcoming year will be completely lacking in - sparkle! The coronation creates a reality of divine presence everywhere.

HERE FOR THE PRIMAL SOUND What is the purpose of the shofar, the ram’s horn that is blown today? It connects to so many things, and like any wordless moment, it can be interpreted in different ways. I like to think of it as the

others). But there is another set of three things - the three blessings that constitute the heart of our Rosh Hashana

selves), Tfilah (our prayers, our voice and the shofar’s call to action) and Tzedakah (righteous giving and help to

most primal sound, that reminds us of something that is both dirty but innocent. A cry - inwards and to the heavens. As an artist, I also recognize how difficult it is to blow the shofar, and even though it is sometimes excruciating to be present at a moment during which the shofar blower has difficulty getting the sound out - I find it a harrowing reminder of how hard our own process of internal reflection is. Will we be able to do it this year?

HERE FOR REMEMBERING This holiday is called the Day of Remembering. This is a very deceptive name. It’s easy to think of it as the traditional old-fashioned image of God sitting in the sky, remembering what we did or didn’t do, and judging the world. However, it definitely isn’t God who needs to do the remembering. It’s us who need at least an annual reminder of why we are doing what we are doing. A reminder of the beauty of our world and our community, and of the fragility of everything around us.

HERE FOR BIRTH One final idea that our prayers leave us with - and this isn’t part of any of the sets of three - is the constant repetition of the phrase “today the world became conceived”. ‫ היום הרת עולם‬- The pregnancy of the world, its gestation, began. And when will it be finished? Has it even been fully born yet? Is it still in its infancy? It is

upon us to guide and care for the world.

From the narrowness I called to you and you answered with divine boundless space.
