Laughter

Levity is a release, a response to the gravity of the week, and Shabbat is an invitation to pause, let go, and laugh. We need humor more than ever. With this global pandemic, the shift to remote working, loneliness and depression rising precipitously, many of us have never felt so disconnected. When we laugh with someone, whether through a screen or six feet apart, we get this cocktail of hormones that strengthens our emotional bonds in a way that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. Studies show it makes us more resilient, creative and resourceful. — Naomi Joanne Bagdonas. Humor, Seriously: Why Humor is a Superpower at Work and in Life

Hanukkah is about the freedom to be true to what we believe without denying the freedom of those who believe otherwise. — Rabbi Jonathan Sacks z”l Laughter is the sunlight that drives winter from one’s face. — Victor Hugo Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.

― Brene Brown

The best way to begin a difficult task is by telling a joke. — Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat 30b Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness. — Anne Frank Humor challenges what you’re really holding on to. If you can’t challenge it, then you don’t have control over it. — Zohar Adner, The Gift of Stress When we share something material, we are left with less of what we started. But currencies of spirit, elements such as light, love and knowledge, defy these physical conditions — they increase as they are shared and become eternal. On Hanukkah when we use one flame to light another, the glow is not halved — the light is multiplied. — Micaela Ezra The proper response, as Hanukkah teaches, is not to curse the darkness but to light a candle. — Rabbi Yitz Greenberg Light is an invitation to happiness, and happiness, when done right, is a kind of holiness, palpable and redemptive. — Mary Oliver Laughter is a communal connective tissue. It is an act of faith, rather than doubt, an act of defiance and triumph rather than acquiescence. — Rabbi Ariella Rosen Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness. — Desmond Tutu
