Javanese people known for their hospitable action, towards stranger and friends. This custom is supported by “teras, a room just like lounge located in front of house. Teras provide area for local society to gather and hang out. Cart merchant usually pass by and sell their items, then people eat, drink, gossiping, tell tale and such at this teras. Sadly, this room doesn’t seem too important in apartment.

“carrying tradisional custom in a modern way” “Noble life demands a noble architecture for noble uses of noble men. Lack of culture means what it has always meant: ignoble civilization and therefore imminent downfall.”

Mind, body and soul Orthopaedic Hospital with Organic Architecture approach Thesis studio | 2013
organic architecture “Building is an organism only if in accord outside with inside and both with the character and nature of its purpose, process, place and time. it will then incorporate the nature of the site, of the methods by which it is constructed, and finallly the whole - from grade to coping, ground to skyline - will be becoming to its purpose.”

organic hospital Hospital, a house for the sick. Hospitals often gives a feeling of grim, frightening and gripping. Every patient who were treated hospital and sentenced themselves to the hospital as a place of isolation, a prison rather than a healing place. Consciously or not, this process slows down the healing process. The goal of this challenging project is to combining a healing space that regenerate mind, body and soul as a single unit. Sometimes people is “sick” and it needs more than just physical treatment. Especially in urban community, where human is cut off from nature.

site development Living things made up of small cells that grow independently, but by joining together, these cells could become a more complex organism. Like cells in living things that have a function and its own role, each activity in this building has a function and a role to contribute to the building (hospital) and then building the city. The hospital building is not only environmentally friendly, but also helps reduce the environmental impact on the city. Provision of public open space for the surrounding community, the waste management system to watershed lands to preserve water.

centralize Service area is centralise in the centre. Even if the building keeps growing, this servis area (lift, emergency, nurse station, etc) will located in the same location.
module growth

the dance Dancing with nature. This building mass growth curvaceous, to the rhythm of the sun path. If plants are organisms that survive by the sun, then the hospital as a living organisms need patient as primary needs. Hospital character and nature of it’s purpose is to treat patient. In this case, the hospital grew with the number of patients. User, site and activity. The mass movement of the building itself is very attention sunlight, temperature and relations with th e outside space. Because human are creature of nature, deep down inside they longing to be close to nature. A connection that has been sealed by the city walls. This movement is like a dance, a collaboration. Where buildings, environments and user collaborate to show their best performance, without overthrow each other. Like a dance. A rhythm. A poet about men, building and city.

About me In my early year in architecture school, a professor once asked me a question. “Why do you choose site with bad conditions, road side, dusty and crowded just for an ice cream cafe?”. This thought never occur before, because the only reason is this site is the perfect match for the cafe. In my last year in architecture school, i finally understood the answer to this question. That architecture is a tool to extract the positive side of a project, eliminating the negative side and process it into a hospitable design, by users and nature. We could build a house on a cliff. But why? This site has many negative effects on strucutre, way finding, nature, etc. But on the other side, house on the cliff could provide a very unique sense of space and extraordinary view that couldn’t be achieved by other sites. So many people asking why and I always asked my why not. Narrow site, crowded area, flooded, climate, etc I think this the reason why I love architecture. The challenge, the problems, the technology and the problems solving, are reasons that architecture never dull. Problems and challenge is a nourishment for my passion in architecture.
