Emergency 911 — Public Speaking
T
he lights went out, laptop was broken, MC didn’t come,
participants were still too few. “You can’t control your external world, but you can prepare yourself to anticipate things you do not want” Often events that we don’t expect may happen during presentations. Some of the events I’ve experienced and that way I handle them:
1. The Light Goes Out How to overcome this: You can give participants time to form groups and discussion points they learned earlier.
2. Laptop is Broken Create two backups to avoid this from happening: 1# Backup your files on a flash disc so if your laptop is damaged, then you can use another laptop for presentation. 2# Simply present the presentation material in the email. Same with the first point difference is only means of file storage only. 3# Print out the manual of your presentation material so that if your laptop is in trouble you can still make a presentation with “cheat” in the manual. 3. MC doesn’t Come You can start the event without the need for an MC. 4. Microphone Can’t be Used Come closer to the participants while waiting for the microphone to be fixed. To prevent this from happening then at the beginning of the presentation you have to ensure the condition of microphone and backup microphone sink and replace battery microphone with new battery.
