Lynia’s Room ARG Game design

This is an ARG open for the public which aims to reduce public stigma of depression and depressed patients through the combination of detective game and storytelling

10years

How medication works reference: NHS(UK) & Wikipedia

Some depression patients delay to seek professional help for nearly ten years start of depression

Counseling

Slow in reaction Poor memory Suicidal thoughts professional treatment

Antidepressants can promote the secretion of neurotransmitter, and maintain a proper balance in the brain, so that patients have a normal emotional response

reference:TED-Ed:What is depression?

Psychiatry

Insights Afraid of other people’s prejudice when getting treatment in the psychiatry department in the hospital

Too shameful to tell her friends that she has depression

Women suffer from depression twice as many as men, while men commit suicide three times as many as women. This is likely due to men's stigma, refusing to seek help or resist treatment, which makes them worse and leads to suicide

Only about 35% of patients would seek professional help, this low proportion may be related to public stigma and shame For some people, searching for help is particularly difficult, because they take depression as a personal weakness ,which is related to one of the stigmas of depression

Side-effect

reference: drug instructions

Different drugs have different side effects, common ones are nausea, insomnia, increased appetite, loss of sexual desire, fatigue and drowsiness

Define

Many unpleasant feelings in the interaction between depressed patients and their friends/family are caused by cognitive contradiction

Stigma/Misunderstanding of depression & people with depression

pathology

Clinical depression is a serious medical disorder, not an emotion, it affects a person’s emotions, thinking, behavior and physical well-being

Depression is caused by thinking too much

The cause of depression is related to various factors such as family relationship, environment, stress, traumatic experience, genetic factors and nervous system

from depression

image of patients

Listening to music and doing sport can ease the patient effectively and cure depression Medication is bad for the patients and it can not make the patients be truly happy

help the public understand more about depression and how it affects people’s daily life to reduce public stigma then agradually lso reducing self stigma experienced by people with depression

You are just always thinking too much

Everyone can be happy why can’t you?

Just get it over with

about depression & people with depression

Mitaken depression as sadness and don’t recognise depression as a true disease needing professional treatment

of depression

Recovery

The truth

Design Goals

Depression is not just sadness, patients are not capable of curing depression by themselves or”get it over with”. Hanging out, sports or listening to music can't simply cure depression. Curing depression needs professional treatment such as medication and psychotherapy

act weirdly / unpredictable actions/ don’t communicate with others

They are less active or energetic than before but they have ordinary looks and normal lives just like anybody else

unkempt / untidy / dangerous / hard to associate with / unsociable

People who look fine or even happy also might actually be suffering from depression

Before the public realise that depression is a mental illness, not 01 Make an emotion, it affects all aspects of a person’s daily life

02 break stereotype images of people with depression 03 Let the public understand how different behaviors affect patients After

We understand your pain now... don’t lose hope, we’ll always be there to help

Game Setting

Floor Plan & Space

What happened to Lynia Lynia's death was actually caused by various aspects, including long-term depression, her parents' negative reaction, lack of proper professional treatment, her friends' incomprehension, inappropriate responses, teachers' contempt and verbal attacks

Story Background A case, where a 22-year-old college girl Lynia became missing, caused social attention. Her parents were shocked by her disappearance and concerned, so they entrusted detective X (the role of user) to investigate in lynia's room to find out the what happen.

Character Information

Detective X (user) X is a private detective commissioned by lynia's parents to investigate the cause of lynia's disappearance

Lynia’s parents

Lynia 22-year-old college student Lynia is the missing girl in the case. She is kind and friendly, has a wide range of friends, personal interests and good academic achievements

In April, her depression became more sever. She began to be unsociable, refused to hang out with her friends and often kept herself indoors. She also no longer enjoyed drawing and music as before.

In May, she felt disgusted with life and frequently missed classes because she was not able to get up from bed everyday. Her friends only gave useless advise and couldn’t empathize. She blamed herself for not being able to recover

In May, she told her parents that she might be mentally ill , but they just blamed her for thinking too much and being too sensitive. They also said only "crazy people" would get mental illness, which made Lynia too ashamed to search for professional help

Lynia’s friend Nathan

They were shocked by their daughter ’s disappearance, and didn’t know anything about it Lydia's mother once mentioned that her daughter might be "sick", but her words were vague. When detective x asked for more details, Lynia's father interrupted in a hurry

In March, unedr the pressure of study and social life, lynia began to feel depressed, and began to suffer from insomnia , which affected her daily work and study

Experience Map & Scenario Thought

I should find lynia's notebook first and see what leads

The content of her social account seems to be getting more and more emotionally down, but why?

Oh...It turned out to be depression

The diagnosis in a post seems to be an important clue, and it seems to be hidden in the room

My God, i never thought that experience of depression is so miserable and helpless, affecting a person so much

It surprises me that such an ordinary person actually suffers from depression

It's too much for her parents to treat her like this, she is nver the one to blame.

Irresponsible ridicule with disdain could cause such serious harm to people with depression... This is so sad, if she can receive treatment normally, she would never be like this worse and hurt herself

Oh my god?! This is Lynia calling?!! I need to find out what is going on with her Finally got the password!Time to find out more information on her laptop

I will try my best to comfort and persuade her to understand that she is not alone and hopeless.

How do kinksters find partners?

Kinky social platform:Fetlife

There are diverse approaches which can be devided into 2 main ways:In real life or from online Munch

Reliable

Munch is a non-sexual gathering of people in a BDSM community, kinksters can chat openly, and meet potential play partners in a neutral public setting

People from a formalcommunity are ususally more trust worthy

Interaction Access

Fetlife is the largest and the most famous BDSM website . Kinksters can meet different kinds of people and expand their kinky social circle there

Easy to get to know each other

During initial connection there is only online chatting without real life interactions A lot of users don’t have a clear or detailed profile, which makes it hard for others to know them well

Time requirement Munch or local BDSM social events are not always held very frequently

Reliable

The number of people who attend munch is very limited

Privacy protection Chances

Easy to get to know each other

Reliable Share kinks to current sexual partners to see if they want to try kinky new things together or not,if they are also kinky it would be likely to build up a BDSM relationship

Chances (undetailed profiles)

Access

Real-life interactions in a munch makes it easy for people to get to know each other fast

Privacy protection Number of users

Website/app always offers users an access to explore and find ideal partners

People don't want to expose their secret interest in BDSM in real life in a munch

Website/app with a specific BDSM theme attracts a large number of users,it’s more likely to find a partner than in real life

Game pool is a nice way to quickly know each other on some topics and lead to further discussions

The visualization of kinks is also good! I think users can also gain a lot of knowledge of some professional terms with this function

I’m not so sure that the video call will be useful, I personally won’t use it

I still want to see the face photo before I match someone, appearance matters to me and maybe to most of people

I think the photo protection is not very well developed or useful if someone trys to use fake photo of another person or violates other people’s photos
