PROPOSAL TO RECLAIM MONSOON DRAIN @ JALAN PAJAM SALAK, NILAI, NEGERI SEMBILAN
NILAI
PROPOSED SITE 3
ST.THERESA CHURCH
KTM NILAI STATION
EXISTING MONSOON DRAIN CHARACTERISTICS The existing monsoon drain is located along the backlane of Jalan Terminal Nilai and Jalan Pajam-Nilai-Salak. The whole stretch of the monsoon drain received water from surface drainage on high land area, and was designed and built to cater high precipitation during monsoon season. The drain is approximately 7m width with 2m depth.
EXISTING MONSOON DRAIN CONDITION Due to the occasional functions of the drain, it was often ignored and turned up to be a negative spaces along the monsoon drain, leaving no concentration nor activities at the back lane.
Trashes and domestic disposal have been stucked in the drain for a long time.
THE DESIGN PROPOSAL
The revitalized monsoon drain will feature floating gardens, wetland ecosystem and public walkways / community trail. The approach will improve the urban image for the town of Nilai, gaining popularity through its leisure and recreational development in a different way. Visitors will be able to engage and appreciate the ecosystem.
BioHaven floating islands Concentrated wetland that mimic the filtration and pollution-conversion functions of natural wetlands, besides treating agricultural runoff, suburban runoff. The solution was just a cover rafts with plants, and set them afloat in the monsoon drain.
Floating Islands construction 1. Layers of mesh made from recycled plastic are assemble into a floating raft, and top it with soil and plants. 2. Launch the island into designated lake, pond, stream, drain, anchoring it in place. 3. When
roots grow into and through the
porous matrix, it descends into the water below.
4. At the mean time, bacteria colonized island, assembling into sticky, slimy sheets called Biofilm that coat the floating matrix and the suspended plant roots. 5. The Biofilm bacteria consume nitrogen and phosphorous, while plant roots also absorbing some of these substances. 6. The organic debris that attached to the underside of floating island become a source of food for fish and other aquatic organisms, and the island itself provides new habitat for birds.
The Fish Habitat Aquatic macrophytes as a fish habitat Macrophytes are large plants that dominate in wetlands. The majority of aquatic macrophytes are flowering plants, but also include ferns, mosses, liverworts, and large algae forms such as Chara. Macrophytes are divided into two groups: free floating, and rooted (submerged) From the shore toward deeper water there are three different zones: emergent plants, floating-leaved plants, and submersed plants.
Mini Floating Pool Barge Allow people to swim adjacent to the drain but clear from the not-clean yet water of the drain.
Dipped platform & Bike path / Promenade Allow people to cycle through the back lane, enjoying the scenic view of the landscape, while creating dipped platform to interact with water features.
