RI SO What is
Risograph printing is a technique best described as a ‘digital screenprinting’. The process is similar to screenprinting, but with the convenience of an office copier. It’s known for its vivid colours (that other printers can’t produce) and its specific textures. These machines deliver ‘perfect imperfections’ and provide a cheap and easy method for reproducing work at large quantities, like posters, prints and zines.
RISO is the name of both a printer and ink company from Japan. Noboru Hayama started his company in post-war Japan (in 1946), calling it RISO. The risograph and the development of soy-based ink, was a response to the expensive import on emulsion ink following the end of World War II. The name RISO means ‘ideal’ in Japanese, a poetic name that Hayama chose as he found it important that people should not lose their ideals during this period of despair.

HOW DOES
RISO
WORK
1)When you scan or upload an image to the machine, it first makes a paper stencil and wraps this around the inkdrum - these are called masters. 2)Paper is placed on the feeder and passed through one or two of the ink drums. 3)The machine creates a ‘digital’ stamp of individual colours (which are incredibly vibrant!) and together they create a colorful image.

All of Riso’s inks are vegetable oilbased. Riso ink dries through absorption into uncoated paper stock rather than through heavy chemical dryers or heat. Because of this, power consumption remains very low throughout the printing process. Each ink resides in its own portable drum that is moved into and out of the machine as needed. This eliminates ink waste and the need for toxic chemicals or washing stations between production runs. The Riso drum is simply removed from the machine, the stencil is discarded, and the drum is stored until the next use. Combine the above with the use of FSC certified and high post consumer waste recycled papers, Riso is an environmentally conscious and sustainable print process.

Riso printing can be an inaccurate and unpredictable print process. The machines were designed to make office copies and not for high precision printing. Imperfect registration, smudging, and uneven coverage are a few of the many quirks that come with this print process. Riso ink is also not archival. The colors are limited to Riso ink spot colors and every print studio has its own unique set.
Unlike digital printing, there’s no option to print in standard ink colors like CMYK. This means the creative possibilities with color are endless.

Courier, a slab-serif typeface known for its typewriter-like quality and accessibility, is the industry standard for all screenplays and scripts.
Courier is a monospaced typeface designed by Howard “Bud” Kettler, initially for IBM’s typewriters but adapted for use as a computer font. The typeface was almost named Messenger, but Kettler said of the decision, “A letter can be just an ordinary messenger, or it can be the courier, which radiates dignity, prestige, and stability.” It was released around 1956, and since IBM did not trademark the name Courier, the typeface design concept and name are public domain.

A key feature of Courier’s design is it being monospace, meaning that the letters and characters occupy the same amount of horizontal space. One reason for this is because early computers had memory limitations, and only 40 or 80 columns of text could be displayed on the green monitor. The consistency of the text, however, proved to be an advantage in situations where columns of characters must be precisely aligned, such as for coding or screenplays. A page of a film script needs to have 55 lines and equal about one minute of screen time. If it is typed in 12pt Courier, it will. If it is typed in 12pt Times New Roman or Curlz MT, you can’t rely on its a ccuracy. What’s more, it is vital that the text maintains the same format no matter what system or program a computer is running, and the monospa ce as well as royalty-free qualities of Courier help achieve that.

fi & PMENT Because of its use in coding and programming, Courier was updated with larger punctuation marks, stronger distinctions between similar characters (for instance the number 0 and upper-case O), and other features to increase its legibility. Other variants were also introduced to the family, for example Courier New, Courier Prime, Courier Screenplay, and Dark Courier.
