elcome to the 65th Anniversary Celebration of the Virginia Highlands Festival! During the Festival, you will find many opportunities, for young and old alike, to explore the hidden treasures of our area. Through a variety of venues, you will find antiques, kayaking trips, tours, hiking, educational seminars, music, arts and crafts, history, and many other programs reflecting the lifestyle and culture of Southwest Virginia. You can also bring the kids to Remsburg Drive for age-appropriate activities in the Youth area.

This year’s theme, “The Jewel of the Blue Ridge”, is depicted in the signature art piece by Abingdon resident Nadya Warthen-Gibson. Titled “The Whole Is Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts”, her piece is a large acrylic painting on plywood that captures details of the Festival and Abingdon in vivid color. These details are her “…thoughts on the Virginia Highlands Festival and…memories from the town of Abingdon as a whole.” They illustrate “…the little things to discover and to treasure in the eye of the mind.” The Festival is a success because of our all-volunteer committee members! Their donation of considerable time and effort has, again, allowed us to perpetuate the vision of our founder, Robert Porterfield, of an environment for exposure to creative expression and the encouragement of interest in leisure time activities through that creativity. We, also, thank the Town of Abingdon, the many businesses, organizations, and our patrons that help make the Festival possible every year. We hope you explore and enjoy our area of Southwest Virginia and the many activities planned for you by the Virginia Highlands Festival! Julie Donovan 2013 Festival President

We are so excited about the Opening Night Concert! The Return is a Beatles tribute band and they are fabulous! Think early sixties Beatles. Mop tops, black suits, Beatle boots. These guys are meticulous in their look, their mannerisms (“John” chews gum on-stage like John Lennon did), their instruments, and their moves. It’s kind of like being at an actual Beatles concert and makes you feel a little giddy, like you’re seeing the real thing. As they walk on to the stage you almost expect to see hysterical crying girls begging for a handshake. And then there’s the music. All of the early hits that you know every word to and before you know it you’re dancing and singing along. If that isn’t enough, you also get to see Annabelle’s Curse. Hailing from Bristol, they are more than just a local band. Only three years old, they have made a huge impact and developed a loyal fan base and a style all their own. It’s traditional folk with a modern edge. You definitely don’t want to miss this concert.

$12 Saturday Only, $8 Sunday Only, $15 Weekend Pass, Under 12 Free Musical roots in our region grow deep. The roots of our traditional old time and bluegrass music can be traced in part to the Scots-Irish who started migrating to Virginia in 1715 and soon became the dominant culture of the Appalachians. They brought with them their ballads and fiddle music. Do you like your music with a little Scots-Irish flavor? Three words: Celtic Music Weekend. From pub-ready stompers and rocked-out traditional Celtic tunes to a sister act who says their purpose is to “unite one and all in the merriment of Celtic music”, it’s the only place to be. Thirteen years running, the weekend promises some of the highest-octane folks we’ve seen in our region. This year’s schedule packs a heavy punch and includes rock versions of traditional songs about knights and knaves, Irish reels, Scottish ballads, long-haired maiden songstresses and gypsies. Maidens IV have fun and it is contagious. They are unbelievably talented with a repertoire flavor of Irish and Scottish traditionals with a spellbinding glaze of original and contemporary Celtic tunes by the band members themselves. Tempest is another high-octane group headed by lead singer and electric mandolinist Leif Sorbye, originally from Oslo,

Saturday Lineup:

Appalachian Highlanders....................................... 1:00 p.m. Tempest.......................................................2:00 - 3:00 p.m. Maidens IV............................................................ 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Sharon Knight....................................................... 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. Rathkeltair.................................................... 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Sharon Knight....................................................... 8:00 - 9:00 p.m. Tempest.............................................................. 9:30 - 10:30 p.m.

Norway. In addition to Norwegian influences their folk rock is a fusion of Irish reels, Scottish ballads and other world music elements. If you’re new to the Celtic rock scene, Rathkeltair is the best introduction band. They are one of the most popular bands on the Celtic rock circuit. Rathkeltair blends compelling and catchy original songs with tight, driving straightahead rock-n-roll, while never forgetting its Celtic roots. Of course when you think about Celtic music you imagine a long-haired songstress plucking her mandolin while singing a melancholy ballad. Sharon Knight is that maiden. Her romantic, distinctive voice and obvious love of storytelling have inspired her musical style that she calls Neofolk Romantique. It’s a Celt Rock celebration! Don’t worry, we didn’t forget the bagpipes. The Appalachian Highlander Pipes and Drums will once again be performing and we can’t wait. They’ve been around for almost 20 years and we still get excited to see them marching out in their tartans. They’re a Virginia Highlands Festival institution, and we hope you’ll stop by to see them. While you’re enjoying all of this awesome music, be sure to keep your eye out for the Misfit Gypsies dancing through the pavilion on Saturday.

Abingdon Market Pavilion Have we mentioned our awesome local music scene? We haven’t? Well, music fans never turn down a good referral, so we’re letting you know about six local bands playing at the Abingdon Market Pavilion on the closing weekend of the Festival. Their styles vary, so if you’re in the mood to rock out or chill out there’s something for you. The pavilion is adjacent to the Juried Arts & Crafts which means you can take a breather after a day of shopping and enjoy some great music. Barlow Gin and the Hatchet Men are channeling some serious rockabilly. Elvis would be proud. Kat Rush and the guys will have your legs shakin’ in no time, pumping out one high-energy hit after another. This Mountain is a collaborative group of friends and musicians making lovely folk-rock tunes for themselves and others. From Johnson City, TN, they have been making music together since the fall of 2010, and have been capturing ears and getting bodies moving in the region. The Addison brothers of Acoustic Reaction have a smooth as silk three part harmony and a creative take on some old favorites. Feel-good Americana music in acoustic versions of classic hits by legends like Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Eagles, The Doobie Brothers, Simon and Garfunkel, The Beatles, Grand Funk Railroad and many more is what you’ll hear. If you like what you hear, hang around for Thomas Taylor and Highrize. These guys play lots of favorites like Conway Twitty, Blake Shelton, Travis Tritt, Elvis Presley. Paul Williams and Victory Trio and Primitive Quartet

“Bluegrass fans love to hear a good gospel tune.” So says Rebel Records when talking about Paul Williams and Victory Trio. It’s true. Many would say gospel and bluegrass are synonymous. You can’t visit Southwest Virginia without experiencing our musical roots. A melting pot of musical instruments, songs and styles brought together through countries and years and molded into what we hear today. Paul Williams has had a legendary career as both a bluegrass and a gospel artist, playing with The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers and Jimmy Martin. He left bluegrass and formed Victory Trio in the 90s and they were nominated for a Grammy in 2000 in the “Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album” category! Primitive Quartet of Candler, North Carolina formed the group while on a fishing trip forty years ago and have been traveling and singing gospel music ever since. Their four-part harmony mixed with traditional mountain shape note style accompanied by acoustical instruments including the mandolin, banjo, fiddle, guitars and acoustic bass, is a beautiful sound.

Gospel singing every Sunday evening from June 2 through August 25. No admission charge — freewill offering. Free refreshments after the performance by ladies of Green Spring Presbyterian Church outside under the trees! Historic Watauga Chapel is a beautiful white church that sits just a few feet away from the spot where the Virginia Creeper Trail crosses Watauga Road near Abingdon, Virginia. Watauga Chapel is sponsored by Green Spring Presbyterian Church. For more information on singing at Watauga Chapel contact Robert L. Gillespie at 276-628-3873. The Jewel of the Blue Ridge

2013 Virginia Highlands Festival celebrates its 65th Anniversary as “The Jewel of the Blue Ridge”. The Festival is happy to announce this year’s signature art and theme. 2013 Signature artist, Nadya Warthen-Gibson, resides in Abingdon, VA, and is a member of the Arts Depot. Her work can be seen at the Arts Depot and at Heartwood. Her signature art piece for the Festival is entitled “The Whole Is Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts.” It is a large acrylic painting on plywood and can be seen at the Abingdon Visitors Center, where it already holds a place of honor on display over the fireplace. “This piece contains my thoughts on the Virginia Highlands Festival and memories from the town of Abingdon as a whole,” said Warthen-Gibson. “The snippets of historic narrative, the wonderful arts scene, the wildlife…the little things to discover and to treasure in the eye of the mind.”

“Nadya’s work was unanimously the committee’s favorite,” said Becky Caldwell, Festival Producer. “We sought concepts from four different local artists on the

theme ‘The Jewel of the Blue Ridge.’ Nadya captured every detail of the Festival and of Abingdon with intense color and intricate beauty.” The Festival’s signature art is an annual commission, which carries a $1,000 prize for the chosen artist. Local artists are invited for consideration each fall, and the resulting work is used in all Festival marketing materials as the image of that year’s theme. The 1912 Gallery Exhibit If you have time, take a drive to Emory & Henry College to visit the 1912 Gallery and see Dawn Gettler’s installation unrequited. Gettler’s installations are stunning and her use of materials will blow your mind. Dawn Gettler’s art installation, unrequited, opens in conjunction with the Festival on Tuesday, August 6. Following the Festival, the exhibit will be open TuesdaySaturdays through Saturday, September 21. Hours for each day during the festival and afterwards are Noon-5 p.m. In Gettler’s 3-D exhibit she shows a number of installation pieces that are sculpture-like in form. But in substance they are far from inflexible or stiff; in some cases, clearly breakable and floating. She refers to the process used in her work as “making” and says that her making “is not permeable, it is not always conscious, and it is not always fluid from conception to execution.”

Dawn Gettler’s art installation, unrequited, opens in conjunction with the Virginia Highlands Festival on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at The 1912 Gallery.

William King Museum Gallery Exhibits After seeing the Youth Exhibit you need to tour William King Museum. The museum rotates its exhibits so there’s always something new. And it sits on top of a hill overlooking Abingdon and seeing the view is a must. The Panoramic Gallery gives you that spectacular view and also houses local artist exhibits. During the Festival, works of past and present museum studio artists will be on display.

“The Virginia Dulcimer: 200 Years of Bowing, Strumming and Picking” January 18 through August 11, Price-Strongwell Galleries.

William King Museum will also be hosting the Virginia Highlands Festival Photography exhibit in the second floor gallery featuring youth, amateur, and professional photographers. The other two galleries hold “The Virginia Dulcimer”, which explores the instrument’s journey from northern Europe to the Appalachian Mountains, and “UnShelved: Nick DeFord, Daniel Essig, Travis Head & Robyn Raines”. These four artists from all corners of the region together reveal an interest in text-based images, seeing books as art objects, and working with paper in both traditional and alternative ways.

Youth Tent, Remsburg Drive Daily 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

“Honey, what are we going to do with the kids?” We’ve got you covered. You come to the Virginia Highlands Festival to see juried arts and crafts, fine art, photography, music, theater and more, right? So should your children and grandchildren. If you worry that the Virginia Highlands Festival won’t engage your children, don’t. We have an abundance of family-friendly shows, activities and events. It’s a child’s paradise. In fact, in addition to all of the fun stuff we adults enjoy, they also get carnival games, face painting, magic shows, clowns and the circus! There are events galore for children of all ages. Your young artist can enter the Youth Art Show, on exhibit at William King Museum throughout the festival, and maybe even win an award. There’s a pop music concert featuring Tyler Lane, Story Time, a puppet show featuring a real “live” 8-ft. dragon (you know you’re intrigued), and a pirate/fairy parade to boot! Kids who participate in the parade should be at Cummings St. and Remsburg Drive by 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, in costumes with decorated bicycles or wagons in pirate or fairy style. Judging will take place after completion of parade at the Youth Tent.

Those creative minds can learn to make instruments from household items, books and wooden toys. And if they just need to release some energy there are plenty of activities to help them get the sillies out. If you do get them calmed down, head over to portrait artist Aline Backes to preserve your memory with a quick sketch or portrait in charcoal, pastel or oil, or maybe a fun caricature. And be on the lookout for ventriloquist Trish Dunn strolling through Arts & Crafts.

For a wild, out-of-this-world experience be sure to take a ride in the Gravity Ball, a low gravity simulator. Astronauts in the Kennedy Space Center use a similar machine to train with. And Lowe’s will be doing a build-aworkshop where kids of all ages can create a wooden toy. Come join the fun. It doesn’t matter which day you’re visiting the festival, it’s sure to be packed with activities for your little and big kids, and adults, too. And it’s convenient because almost all of the youth activities are centrally located on Remsburg Drive, adjacent to the Arts & Crafts Show. So bring the whole family and have a great time!

Okay folks, time for a history lesson. No groaning. It’s going to be fun!

that was occupied by invading Union troops late in the war.

Do you know that Abingdon has nine properties on the National Register of Historic places? Or that our 20-block historic district falls under design guidelines that help protect the character of the area, which includes properties dating back to the late 1700s? How about that the Tavern is not only the oldest building in Abingdon but also one of the oldest west of the Blue Ridge?

Be sure to take the tour of Fields-Penn 1860 House Museum and see what ‘modern’ home living was like back then. If you are looking to travel a little farther back in time to Colonial days, that’s definitely doable. Local groups are reliving yesteryear in the backcountry on the Muster Grounds, and crafters and tradesmen will be selling their wares at the Colonial Trade Faire, so do some Colonial-style shopping.

Abingdon is a town focused on history and historic preservation, and the Festival’s Living History program is a great way to learn a lot about our town and region (and country), or brush up on what you already know. And, history buff or not, it is always fascinating to see the past brought to life. So don your hoop skirts and your forage hats and head over to the Muster Grounds for Civil War Weekend to talk to Gen. Robert E. Lee about life during the War between the States and see the home, ‘Retirement’,

Take a walk through Sinking Spring Cemetery and join the Living History tour for a glimpse into the personal lives of local families. The cemetery is hands down one of the most beautiful places in town. If you need to unwind a bit, there are a lot of lectures and short tours (one-room schoolhouse, restored mill), and you can end the day at the Muster Grounds with a picnic and an outdoor viewing of a documentary about the Civil War’s impact on our region and the ghost stories it left behind.

Workshops: “A Crash Course in Fiction Craftsmanship” by Silas House (AM & PM) Silas House will offer an intensive “crash course in fiction” writing workshop that will focus on creating vivid beginnings and characterizations, conjuring effective sense of place, writing the best dialogue, and more. “Mood: From Creative Setting to Vessel for Meaning” by Sofia Starnes (AM) This poetry seminar will explore the role of mood in poetry: how the creative mood ushers in a poem, what role mood plays in a poem, how it bears and actually becomes the meaning of a poem. “Out of Emotion, Into Image” by Sofia Starnes (PM) This poetry seminar will focus on the journey we take, as poets, from an emotion-laden, inner event to an objective image. We’ll explore how the

60

emotion that fuels a poem must rely on imagery for its survival, and how we can maximize the tension between the two for the making of a poem. “Dramaturgy for the Stage” by Nicholas Piper (AM) What is dramaturgy, anyway? What role does it play in the shaping of a new play? This workshop will offer tips on everything from developing your new play to preparing your play for submission. “Playing with Time” by Jim Minick (PM) When we write, we become gods, creating a world with every page. So as gods, we have many gifts, one of them being the ability to play with time. The diverse ways that writers manipulate time on the page, from the micro-level to the macro, will be explored in this workshop.
