2012-13 After-School Activities Handbook Grade 3-8 Students

AMERICAN SCHOOL OF PARIS

Founded 1946

Dear Lower and Middle School Parents, Welcome to term1 after-‐school program! We look forward to having your children participate in an exciting year of fun-‐filled activities! This handbook will give you a quick overview of our many offerings, including art courses, sports activities and dance classes. You will also read about our teachers and find all the necessary information about registration procedures, tuition fees and the first term calendar. One key area of ASP’s Strategic Plan is to enhance our school’s French language Program. This year, our aim is to develop and implement a comprehensive Extension/After-‐School program that will include both ASP outreach to the French community and increased opportunities for ASP students to enhance their French language skills in full alignment with ASP’s school mission. The After-‐School program will also introduce French clubs at all levels – a Language Exchange Club for ASP and Extension Lower School students. Please note that the Lower School Program will start on Monday, September 24 and the Middle School Program on Wednesday, October 10. Registration will begin on Thursday, September 13, and is on a first come first serve basis. Please drop off your forms in the After-‐School Program Box located in the Extension Office (building 6/top floor). A confirmation email will be sent to Lower School parents on Thursday, September 20, and to Middle School parents on Thursday, October, 4. We want to make our after-‐school program an enjoyable and enriching experience for our students. Your ideas and suggestions are always welcome to help us achieve this and to continually improve. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or suggestions. We wish you the best for a successful and rewarding school year! HAVE FUN IN FRENCH!

My name is Daphne Chadzynski and I’m a French native teacher with numerous experiences working with children, teenagers or adults, in various places including the United States where I’ve been working for 5 years. Now back in France, I’d like to share my experience, love of Arts and French language with learners who will enjoy fun, hands on activities, speaking focused games and songs! Take part in great competitions and get free rewards (such as enjoying an ice cream at Bertillon or a box of macarons from Ladurée)..… So have fun in French and just bring yourself – no paper no pencil required – except when we’ll be using our artistic fiber!

AIKIDO THE LANGUAGE EXCHANGE CLUB

David Bell has been a student of Aikido for over twenty years and has been teaching Aikido for more than 10 years. As an instructor, David, has served as the Assistant Instructor at East Lansing Aikikai (Michigan, USA) and Assistant Instructor at Dragon Hill Aikido in Yongsan, South Korea. Most recently David served as the Chief Instructor at Seoul Foreign School in Seoul, South Korea teaching Elementary, Middle, and High School students as well as adult classes. Finally, David is a certified Udansha by the United States Aikido Federation and the International Aikikai Foundation. Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art created by Morihei th Ueshiba in the early 20 century. Aikido strives for the ultimate goal of peaceful resolution of conflict rather than defeat. Aikido movements may seem circular and soft on the surface but with some application of force Aikido can be devastating in nature. Ultimately, Aikido teaches calm, control of the self, awareness and respect for others, and the fundamental concept that, improving the world begins with improving yourself. At ASP the focus of Aikido training is the fundamental techniques that are taught worldwide. Classes also adhere to the strict etiquette that is found in traditional Aikido Dojos (training schools) around the world. The ASP Aikido classes are also taught so that students have the skills, confidence, and knowledge to continue studying Aikido no matter where in the world they may travel. A Gi (uniform) can be purchased for about € 40. Not mandatory.

Daphne Chadzynski and Corinne Ott will be proposing to ASP and Extension students exciting cultural and linguistic opportunities in French and English that will help participants to improve their language skills, share an international perspective, and make lasting friendships.
