BLACKBOARD Blackboard Overview Objective The objective of this overview is to introduce new users to Blackboard and provide basic instruction in setting up their individual Blackboard course sites. Description This hands-on session will provide an overview to the Blackboard learning management system. Participants will learn how to upload and organize course materials, send announcements to students, and how to embed media in their Blackboard course space. No previous experience with Blackboard is necessary to attend this session.

Instructional Design in Blackboard Objective After attending this seminar, participants will be able to customize their Blackboard course using Universal Design principles to create an effective learning environment. Description This seminar will focus on the pedagogy of your Blackboard course design. We will discuss proven strategies that have helped other instructors create an efficient and engaging course space in Blackboard. This course is for instructors looking to go beyond the default settings in Blackboard, and consider customization features such as learning modules. Bring your questions and suggestions and be prepared for some enlightened discussion.

Objective After this seminar, you will become more familiar with using the collaboration tools available in Blackboard (discussion board, blogs, journals, wikis, and email), and how these tools can enhance the student learning experience. Description This seminar will focus on the main tools that instructors and students can use to communicate and collaborate within Blackboard. We will also discuss the pedagogy behind using communication and collaboration tools in the online environment. General familiarity with Blackboard or previous attendance in the Blackboard Overview seminar required for participation in this session.

Groups and Adaptive Release in Blackboard Objective Participants will be able to create groups and learn how to assign activities, assessments, and assignments to specific groups and individuals using adaptive release settings. Description Did you know you can create assignments and assign them to specific students or groups within your Blackboard course? This seminar will focus on how to assign various activities to a specific person or group using adaptive release. These settings are useful for students who need accommodations such as extended time to take an exam, or an extended deadline for an assignment.

Blackboard Mashups and Embedding Objective Participants will be able to embed media from YouTube, Flickr, and Slideshare in their Blackboard course using the Mashups tool and the embed HTML code. Description Easily integrate rich media learning content into your course using resources from YouTube, Slideshare, Flickr, and more. Faculty can supplement their course content and incorporate Universal Design principles by incorporating audio, video, and images into their Blackboard course.

Assessments and Assignments in Blackboard Objective Participants will be able to configure, develop, deliver, and grade online assessments and assignments in Blackboard. Description This session will focus on the tools in Blackboard that can be used to collect and evaluate student work. This will include the assessment tool that can be used to create and deliver online quizzes and surveys. These assessments can be automatically graded or graded manually. Also covered will be the assignment tool, which allows students to submit electronic materials that can be evaluated by the instructor. Feedback given by the instructor can easily be returned and displayed to students. Join us to find out how Blackboard can assist with the evaluation of your students. General familiarity with Blackboard or previous attendance in the Blackboard Overview seminar required for participation in this session.

Using the Blackboard Gradebook Objective Participants will be able to collect electronic assignments ad input grades for students, which students can then view in Blackboard. Participants will be able to create columns in their grade center, and configure weighted total columns to use to calculate final grades. Description Organizing the Grade Center and using the assignment tools for the collection of electronic assignments will be the focus of this session. How to set up a weighted total column to calculate a final grade will be detailed. Additionally, the download and upload of the grade center will be demonstrated along with a discussion regarding submitting your grades from Blackboard to the Registrar’s Office. General familiarity with Blackboard or previous attendance in the Blackboard Overview seminar required for participation in this session.

ADOBE CONNECT Introduction to Adobe Connect Objective Participants will be able to create and manage a virtual meeting using Adobe Connect. Description This session will introduce you to the functionality of the Adobe Connect webconferencing system. This overview will demonstrate the capability of the system to communicate online in real-time with one to many other virtual participants. Other options, including audio, video, and desktop sharing options will be demonstrated. No previous experience with Adobe Connect is necessary to attend this session.

TEACHING WITH TECHNOLOGY Turnitin Anti-Plagiarism System Objective Participants will be able to create a Turnitin assignment within their Blackboard course. Description The integration between Blackboard and Turnitin allows instructors to add Turnitin assignments to their courses within Blackboard. Once students submit papers, originality reports are generated and can be viewed by instructors and students. This workshop will focus on how to create, grade, and produce originality reports from Turnitin. Newer features, such as Turnitin Voice Comments, will also be discussed.

TurningPoint Student Response Systems Objective This session will enable participants to create a TurningPoint presentation, add polling questions, integrate their class roster with TurningPoint, run a polling session, and send session data to the Blackboard grade center. Description Student response systems, sometimes referred to as “clickers� allow instructors to collect real-time feedback from students during class. Come learn how these devices can be used to poll students, assess student understanding, or deliver pop-quizzes.

Expressions (WordPress) Objective After attending this session, participants will be able to access and develop their own WordPress site to use as a blog, portfolio, class website, etc. Description Expressions is a Syracuse University service that allows students, faculty, and staff to create their own WordPress sites. Make a website, customize your theme, and start expressing yourself! This workshop will focus on how to get started creating a WordPress site, as well as some of the basic features that you have access to in order to further customize your site.

SOCIAL MEDIA Twitter Objective Participants will be able to demonstrate a general understanding of Twitter, including terminology, and how this technology can be used in the classroom for educational purposes. Description This presentation will focus on using Twitter more effectively in the classroom to increase student interaction and engagement. No previous experience with Twitter is necessary to attend this session.

A Practical Approach to Blogging in the Classroom Objective Participants will gain an understanding of how blogging can be used as an effective writing tool in the classroom. Description Blogging is all about writing for a public audience. Students tend to write with more enthusiasm when they know they have an audience reading their entries. This seminar will focus on how instructors can apply blogging techniques to their classrooms. We will define the term “blogging�, and will discuss how blogging can be an effective collaboration tool for students.

YouTube Objective Participants will be able to create a YouTube account, upload videos, add captions, and publish their videos. Description YouTube is the world’s most popular online video community. It allows people to create, discover, watch, and share video. Online video offers a new way for educators to communicate with their students. Video can be used to connect with all of your learners in a concise, vivid, and compelling way.

Prezi Objective Participants will be able to create dynamic, non-linear presentations with Prezi, incorporating video, images, and text into their presentations. Description Prezi is a Flash-based presentation tool that lets you break away from the traditional slide-by-slide approach. It allows you to create non-linear presentations where you can zoom in and out of a visual map containing words, links, images, videos, etc. The nonlinearity format encourages dialogue and helps the audience and presenter to remember more of the presentation by stimulating spatial memory.

Symbaloo – Personal Learning Environment Objective Participants will learn how Symbaloo can be an effective tool for creating personal learning environments and organizing information. Description A personal learning environment (PLE) describes the tools, communities, and services that constitute the individual educational platforms that learners use to direct their own learning. PLEs represent learning model where students draw connections from a growing matrix of resources that they select and organize. Symbaloo allows you to locate and organize all of your favorite websites into one easy location.
