ne of the questions I have frequently being asked is “what criteria do you use to select the men appearing in MAN Magazine”? The answer is simple; we aim to highlight and salute the work been done by men, from different backgrounds and in varying ages, in making our societies, and the country at large, a better place. These men featured however tend to have one thing in common; they all possess a quiet determination that is reflected in their energy, discipline and hardwork directed towards achieving their set goals. It is no wonder then, the men featured in MAN Magazine tend to inspire, educate and motivate others since they are a shining example of what we can achieve when we dare to dream and work hard to achieve our goals. Mohammed Dewji, our MAN on spotlight in this issue, needs no introduction to many. He is a well known businessman who has managed to achieve incredible success at a young age. What perhaps few people know is his uncompromising attitude towards discipline and hard work, his dedication to improve the lives of the people in his constituency and his humble admission that despite his tremendous success, he is just an ordinary guy. His not-to-be-missed interview is both a lesson and an inspiration. Like always, this issue of MAN Magazine is again jam packed with topics that address many aspects of a man´s life. From tips on how to get that promotion to insight about the importance of life insurance, we have got you covered. Why do football clubs blame their coaches when their teams do not succeed? The answer can be found on our sports section. Our health section has been expanded to highlight the many health risks facing men. Did you know that cancer affects more men than women? Or that music can relieve your stress way faster than any beverage or pill could. Read all about these health and stress management tips on our health section. We not only aim to inform you but also ignite your dreams. At the end of the day however, it is your participation and suggestions that will make MAN Magazine grow. First and foremost, I would like to thank all our readers for your continuous support, input and feedback which collectively, are spearheading the growth of MAN Magazine. Our content keeps expanding as we aim to provide a platform for topics of specific relevance to men but of course, of general interest to all. We now have established dedicated sections written by experts in the field to address your curiosity and queries on issues about insurance, starting a business, golf as well as issues pertaining to men´s health.

T

alking about men´s health, between June 12 – 18, 2013, MAN magazine was part of a delegation led by Rev. Canon Dr. Emmanuel Kandusi, a Prostate Cancer Survivor T4, National Coordinator and Founder of Tanzania 50 Plus Campaign to study community outreach work done by Prostate Health Education Network – PHEN based in Quincy, Boston, Massachusetts. The mission of PHEN is to eliminate the African American prostate cancer disparity. Black men in the United States have the nation’s highest prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates. PHEN’s mission also includes advocacy efforts to increase the overall support and resources to wage a war on prostate cancer that will eventually lead to a cure for the disease for the benefit of all men. The one week event culminated on the Father’s Day Rally, where prostate cancer survivors, their families and friends came together at Twelfth Baptist Church in Boston. All of us in the delegation learnt a lot about community outreach strategies and we plan to implement some of the key lessons in future prostate cancer campaigns in Tanzania. We urge our readers, friends and all MEN in Tanzania to join and be part of this noble prostate cancer campaign. We caution all men who are 45 years old and above to take the essential step and do a prostate check-up; bearing in mind that if prostate cancer is discovered early, it can be cured. As you will probably notice in our ever expanding health files section, MAN Magazine continues to support and highlight health issues affecting men. Afterall, knowledge is power and our aim is to increase awareness of the vital, and sometimes fatal, men´s health issues. This MAN Magazine in your hand profiles several Legends In Motion; men from all walks of life who are each uplifting, empowering, motivating and inspiring. We hope a spark will be ignited as you read about them. As always, our social media provides the quickest platform for you to interact with us and share your thoughts and feedback

WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU ON OUR: twitter (https://twitter.com/manmagtz) or facebook (http://www.facebook.com/manmagtz)Once again, your continued support is much appreciated.

Travel can offer adventure, escape and relaxation for even the most tightly wound workaholic, but a language barrier can add stress back into the equation. A good electronic translator can help remove that barrier or at least give you a look at the other side by putting the most useful foreign phrases at your fingertips. A good electronic translator like the Franklin Speaking Global EST-7014, will help you survive the streets of a wide range of foreign countries, getting you from an airport to a hotel to an attraction with ease.

Kindle Paperwhite 3G

Anyone who likes to read on the road should consider a Kindle an essential companion. That’s because a kindle allows you to basically carry a library with you. In addition to being lightweight, perfect for traveling, the Kindle Paperwhite 3G comes with better resolution than earlier eReader models, and it has a built-in light to illuminate your screen perfectly. You can adjust the brightness levels to your liking and your surroundings. Because of the design of the light guided screen, the words of your book will appear crisp and clear no matter where you are reading.

The Powerbag The Powerbag ensures that none of your devices batteries die en route to your next destination. The powerbag is available as a backpack, messenger bag, or briefcase and each has a lightweight, built-in charging station that lets you charge up to four devices at once. You can therefore juice up your cellphone, tablet, e-reader, and GPS while dashing through the airport. That is convenience at its best. www. mypowerbag.com

SMART GATES

The Benefits of Automatic Gates If the security, safety and protection of your home or business are a primary concern, then you need to consider the benefits of automatic gates. Installing an automatic gate is easier and more affordable today than ever before and the advantages of automatic gates are many. Whether it’s for a business premise or a residence, an automatic gate is a great feature to keep family and property safe. There is a variety of automatic gates out there, so the design is limited to one’s imagination. Automatic gates can be made from a variety of materials including wrought iron and wood. Most materials used ensure that the gates are difficult to break open or climb. Most gates are

also equipped with sensors that detect for instance a vehicle that may have stopped midway to prevent closing early and causing damage. This is a safety feature that can eliminate the possibility of injuring people and unnecessary damage to equipment and vehicles. In addition, automatic gates are often equipped with additional battery power to ensure they

It is so simple to open automatic gates by using a remote control from the comfort of your car. Ordinary gates can often be inconveniencing when you have to manually open and close them every time you pass through your driveway, especially during unfavorable weather such as on a rainy day. Hence comfort and convenience are also major benefits of automatic gates. Not only do automatic gates increase safety, but they also often increase the property’s value. They are therefore an invaluable safety feature and a great investment for your home.

The Humble Hyundai Santa Fe The Hyundai Santa Fe has continuously taken a leap in terms of quality and is now regarded as one of the best SUVs on the market. Named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, the first generation Hyundai Santa Fe was first introduced in the year 2001 as Hyundai’s first SUV model and it quickly became the company’s best seller. The better and improved second generation Hyundai Santa Fe, which presented a big step up in terms of styling and performance, was released in 2007 and was named amongst the top 10 vehicles for 2008 based on road tests, comfort, predicted safety and reliability.

R

edesigned for 2013, the latest, third-generation Santa Fe raises the bar even further with its truly impressive performance and attractive styling. With its contemporary appearance and upscale and roomy interior design, this model makes for a respectable 4x4. The Santa Fe packs a 3.3-liter V6 (290 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque). A six-speed automatic transmission is standard across the line, and all Santa Fe models have front-wheel drive as standard, while all-wheel drive is optional. Major Santa Fe options include a navigation system, a panoramic sunroof and a premium sound system. The Santa Fe models provide a quiet, compliant ride. Handling is also impressive, though there have been reports that the steering has a tendency to wander a bit on the highway. Nevertheless, the Santa Fe, provides a decent amount of luxury, solid build quality, tons of useful features, surprising performance and attractive pricing.

Disciplined, hardworking, sharp, determined, as well as, humble and caring. These are just some of the words that can be used to describe Mohammed Dewji. Commonly known as simply MO, he is an astute businessman at the helm of an impressively growing business.

Mohammed Dewji

The ultimate businessman www.mammagazinetz.com • 9

It is no wonder he has achieved success and recognition beyond the borders of Tanzania. His most recent recognition came from Forbes Africa Magazine where he became the youngest African to get a cover feature in this prestigious magazine. MAN Magazine’s correspondent, Sameer Kermalli, caught up with this dynamic leader and discussed about the achievement he is most proud of, the personal and business setbacks he has faced and the essential leadership lessons he has learnt along the way. Read on to discover more about MO.

I guess few people know that I have experienced failures; my life is not only about successes

Forbes Magazine named you the Tsar of Dar. What is your opinion about this title? Tsar of Dar is supposed to mean that I am an emperor or a mogul. I think that title is too big for who I really am. I am just a normal guy. When you begin to identify yourself with grandiose titles, the connectivity between you and the people become quite widened and I do not want that to happen.

You have certainly accomplished a lot so far, is there an achievement

10 • www.mammagazinetz.com

that you are most proud of? Employment remains the biggest problem in the world. Many businesses try to find ways to cut down on employment costs. I, however, like to engage in businesses that not only make money but also allow us to employ a lot of people and that is how METL got to have over 24,000 employees. So to answer your question, the ability to create employment is very important to me and having METL being able to employ so many people is something I am very proud of.

Indra Nooyi, the CEO of PepsiCo once said, that if you want to improve the organisation, you have to improve yourself and the organisation gets pulled up with you. Do you believe in this notion of continuous selfimprovement? I completely agree with this statement, you always have to try to improve and better yourself. For me, efficient time management and discipline are the things that I am continuously trying to improve in myself. For example, even if you are the boss, you have to be at work and put in the hours even though you know no one is going to question you if you slack. You also have to be a good listener and if you are not, you need to spend time to listen more and this ability to listen creates positive vibes that trickle down to people around you and creates a positive organisational culture

Have you faced any major setbacks in your quest to grow METL? The biggest challenge has been attaining the right manpower and expertise. It is the challenge of keeping people motivated and creating a sense of ownership in an organisation. It is not the amount of hours an employee spends in organisation that matters, it is the quality of work produced that makes the difference between a top class organisation and a medium class organisation. Top employees require self-motivation and a sense of ownership and it is always a challenge to find employees who have this attitude towards work. In the long run, attitude outweighs ability and I prefer hiring someone with the right attitude to work over someone with the optimal skills but wrong attitude

to work. To get good self motivated people, to retain them and to keep motivating them is a challenging notion.

It is said that the best leadership lessons come from those who have reached and stayed at the top. What 3 essential leadership lessons have you learnt since becoming the CEO of METL. The first lesson I have learnt is the importance of discipline. As a leader, you have to be very disciplined. It is a constant battle. I am very disciplined about going to the gym. I like going to the gym because it is good for my health and it keeps me sane. I come to the office by 6am and by 1 o´clock, I have put in 7 hours of work so obviously my energy levels drop and I head to the gym to recharge. Indeed, sometimes you do not feel like going to the gym but when you are disciplined, you will look for every way possible to make it happen. Secondly, I have learnt, as a leader, you always have to be calm and composed. You should rarely loose your cool. I do show my dissatisfaction but without resorting to shouting because once you shout, you are walking a fine line between voicing your frustration and disrespecting someone and I believe in always respecting people from all walks of life. Thirdly, a leader needs to know how to delegate. You cannot do everything by yourself. It is important to remember that you should not delegate a job before you understand the job function yourself otherwise you can not keep checks and balances.

METL has ventured into different African countries within the region.

Which African country in your opinion has a lot of untapped business opportunities? The countries that I see have huge opportunities within Africa are Mozambique, Rwanda, Burundi, Eastern Congo, Uganda, Zambia and Malawi. METL is aiming to deploy 150 million dollars in these countries. However, the countries I see the most potential in are Mozambique, Zambia and Ethiopia because they have good population, good GDP growth and stable governments.

In your last interview with MAN Magazine, you noted that your hometown and constituency of Singida has been a forgotten region untouched by development initiatives. What key projects do you have planned in the bid to alleviate poverty in Singida? I have done quite a bit but I have focused mainly on water, education, healthcare and agriculture. Without going into so much detail, I will point out that when I was elected, accessibility of water was 23%, now accessibility of water is 82%. This was made possible through working with the government and receiving funding of almost $35 million from OPEC and BADEA. With regard to education, we have gone from having two secondary schools to now having 18 secondary schools. I have spent 1.3 million dollars building infrastructure and we are now building science labs and since my constituency is mostly in the urban area, we have not experienced the problem of teacher shortages as much as other parts of the country. I have also established the MO Scholarship Fund, which is given to about 50% of the secondary school kids. With regards to health, we have

www.mammagazinetz.com • 11

been able to effectively implement measures to fight Malaria and drastically reduce infant mortality rate as well as helping people with cataract see again by providing eyesight saving operations. Of course tackling HIV is also on the top of our health agenda. In the agriculture sector, we have spent $500 000 in supporting agriculture schemes and increasing the standard of living of farmers.

There is a general lack of mentoring opportunities for young people to benefit from the wealth of knowledge and experience from accomplished business people. Do you engage in any mentoring activities? I do not engage in mentoring activities but I would like to. Due to time constraints, it would be difficult for me to sustainably mentor on a one on one basis but I would love to mentor maybe a group of 20 young and aspiring kids.

You are self-proclaimed workaholic; do you have time for socialising with friends? Hardly. Some of my closest friends are now living abroad and I sometimes feel I am too old to make new friends. Perhaps I simply need to socialise more.

A strong support system is essential for any leader. Who have been your biggest and continuous supporters in your journey so far? Without a doubt, my dad has been my biggest supporter. He is my role model and he has coached and instilled discipline in me. Sometimes I feel I do not know what I would do without him. My wife is also a very important person in my life. She always keeps me on check and has always supported me. I sometimes go through difficult days and times and she is always there for me. It does not

matter to her how much money I am making, what matters to her is how I am and how I feel. Of course, there is also my mom who is my pillar of strength and has always been there for me. Basically, my parents and my wife are my balancing act and continuous supporters.

MAN Magazine recently launched a monthly golf column to highlight the importance of Golf for networking, unwinding and discipline. As a keen golfer, what advice would you give to a MAN aspiring to take up the sport? Golf is a good game. It is a very different sport because it is more of an individual sport. Rather than playing against people, you are playing against yourself so I would always advise people to take up golf. Perhaps in Tanzania it has not quite taken off as a networking sport but once you know the game, you can go anywhere in the world and play as well as network.

What is your favourite travel destination? Dubai. I like it because it is a mix between the east and the west, it is very clean and there are beautiful beaches and very nice hotels. There are also many spots that offer access to prayer rooms and the food is always halaal. It is ideal for a short stay whether on business or holiday.

With the advancement in technology, social media and smart phones, business can easily become a 24 hour non-stop engagement. Do you ever switch off your phone? I do not switch off my phone but I do occasionally keep it on silence. I am also on twitter and twit personally. I twit about politics, religion, sports, business and Africa. I like to twit in

Kiswahili and basically twit what I feel. My twitter handle is @moodewji

Every action we take contributes to what will one day become our legacy. What would you like to be remembered for? I would like to be remembered as someone who not only made money but also someone who gave back to Tanzania. Tanzania is my home, it is the country where I have earned money out of and it is the country I will give money back to.

There are many aspiring entrepreneurs who, like you, would like to make an impact in our country. What words of advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs? I read a report that said by 2035, Tanzania is going to be the third or fourth largest economy in Africa, just behind South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria, so all I can see in our country is growth and opportunity. I will say to any aspiring entrepreneur that you are in the right country at the right time. What is required now is a can-do attitude that allows you to see possibilities to accomplish your goals no matter your circumstances. Also remember, business success does not come overnight; you have to build your business slowly, block by block.

How do you define success? Success is individual output. For some, success means being content and having a job you enjoy while for others, success means having a personal jet. At the end of the day, the measurement of success is an individual thing.

Finally, what is the one thing that very few people know about you? I never made it to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. I was trying to climb too quickly but I will try again. I want to raise money for Singida. I guess few people know that I have experienced failures; my life is not only about successes.

The principled leader Ms. MARGARETH MATABA CHACHA is the first Managing Director of Tanzania Women’s Bank. She has a wealth of experience in the financial sector spanning over 27 years in senior leadership positions in various local and international organizations. Prior to her appointment, she was the Operations Manager for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in New York. She holds a MSC in Information Technology (Business Information Management) from the Queen’s University of Belfast in UK (1996) and BA general Hon. From the University of Dar es Salaam (1983) as well as various professional courses including Bank Management Course at Nsekela College (Iringa TZ), Finance and Business Appraisal course (Philippines), Operations Manager’s Course UNDP New York.

MAN Correspondent, Roohina Doloo spoke to this dynamic leader to get a glimpse about her life and her leadership style. How would you describe your leadership style? Flexible and adaptive to change. I would describe myself as a goal achiever, an excellent marketer and a risk taker who is also perseverant. As a leader, I take the role of a motivator and a mentor and both these roles require good communication.

What are some of the challenges you have faced in your profession? Family affairs have been my main challenge because sometimes I am forced to sacrifice opportunities in the interest of family welfare – for example in 2006 I declined to take up a well paying international post in Sudan because of my family – it was a time when my kids were in their teenage, calling for close emotional parental care and protection. I had to come back home. Other challenges are like constant change of team combination because of high staff mobility. Many new banks are opening so staff especially seniors tend to move following green pastures. Training new staff is costly as they take time to catch up. As a woman manager, I find it challenging because some male officers or colleagues if you prefer, still have a problem taking orders from a woman, thus forcing me to closely follow up on them and sometimes adopting a micro-management style.

Margareth Mataba Chacha. The Managing Director of Tanzania Women’s Bank

Effective leadership 5 activities great leaders do on a daily basis

The habits of a leader determine their level of effectiveness and success. Successful leaders have developed good habits over a period of time which they practice daily. If you want to become a better leader, implementing these 5 activities on a daily basis is a must. different members of the team and constantly reiterate the reasons why you will be successful. Excellent leaders also take time to praise employees who are doing an excellent job on a one to one basis as this maintains a positive morale in the workplace.

Network daily Great leaders recognise the power of networking and maintaining good relations. They hence have dinners with clients, make phone calls, attend events, have business lunches and look for several other opportunities daily to network and meet people.

Manage time effectively Every leader spends a huge chunk of their time on meetings, phone calls and travelling; activities that can be very time consuming and not always productive. A great leader knows the importance of time management and the need to have quiet and uninterrupted time to reflect on targeted goals and strategies being implemented. All great leaders hence ensure that a certain time of the day is dedicated to daily reflection without fail. Some do this by being the first ones to work, others take solo lunches while others insist their secretaries ensure no interruptions what so ever for a certain time of a day.

Transfer Optimism Leadership is a transfer of belief and great leaders inspire their teams to believe they can succeed. Hence an excellent leader ensures that they daily communicate progress to

Personal Growth & Development –Successful leaders have the habit of learning and growing. They are disciplined about reading news, information about their industry as well as self empowerment. They dedicate at least 30 minutes a day in some sort of personal development. These activities would include reading motivational books, listening to inspiring audios and videos as well engaging in further studies to expand their knowledge about the industry. Value fitness and rest Successful leaders know they are more efficient when they are healthy and alert. Hence they value the importance of getting enough sleep. Research makes it clear that sleep has an enormous influence on our mood, health and energy. Lack of sleep may even contribute to weight gain! They also ensure that they make time for a fitness activity whether through a round of golf, an hour at the gym or by doing exercises at home on a daily basis.

How sweet words can spice up your marriage

Praising your spouse in public and calling her by sweet words is one of the most important investments you can make in your family and in your marriage.

This is important for at least five reasons: You get more of what you affirm. Have you ever noticed that when someone praises you, you want to repeat the behaviour that caused it? This is just human nature. It can be a form of manipulation if it isn’t genuine. But it can be a powerful way to motivate others when it is authentic. Affirmation shifts your attitude toward your spouse. Words are powerful tools. They can create, or they can destroy. They can build up, or they can tear down. Most people have a drive to align their actions-and their attitudes-with their words. If you start speaking well of someone, you start believing what you say. Affirmation helps strengthen your spouse’s best qualities. Encouragement is also a powerful force for good. All of us need positive

reinforcement. This is why when we are losing weight and people notice, it gives us the strength to stick with the program. This is true in every area of life. Affirmation wards off the temptation of adultery. When others see you are happily married, they are less likely to proposition you. It’s like a hedge that protects your marriage from would-be predators. You simply stop being a target. Affirmation provides a model to those you lead. To be a truly effective leader, you must lead yourself, and then you must lead your family. Your marriage is a powerful visual of how you treat the people you value the most. When you speak highly of your spouse, your followers are

More marriages might survive if the partners realized that sometimes the better comes after the worse. THE

RISE OF FAKE FRIENDSHIPS

True, loyal and faithful friends are indeed a prized possession supposed to be treasured forever. Their friendship is timeless and eternal. “For without friends,” Aristotle says, “no one would choose to live, though he had all other goods.” Good friends are like two bodies with one soul. Regrettably and ironically, genuine friendships are hard to be found in our modern materialistic world where money and personal gains are considered as yardsticks or criteria for having friends. All the folk tales, stories, great sermons extolling the virtues and setting great standard of friendship seem to have mostly lost their core meaning in our present age. True friendship is fast disappearing especially in our jet-set age, where moral values are blurred and eclipsed by greed. There was a time when it was unimaginable for a friend to cheat his friend. The spirit of selfsacrifice for the sake of a friend was a common and worthwhile quality. Friends were always mindful of each other’s interests and gave each other support. Jealousy, envy, prejudice, hatred, greed, hypocrisy were foreign in the world of friendship. It is indeed very painful to say that

such an ideal friendship is rare in our present era. In their wild attempt to be part the of rat race to hanker after worldly riches and benefits, friends, shockingly, have adopted an indifferent and devil-may-care attitude towards their friends who are less fortunate than they are. This “who-cares!” attitude is a grim reminder that genuine friendship has been adversely affected by our irrational and selfish desires for progress. All this paints a bleak, depressing and pessimistic outlook but all is not grim in the world of friendship. Despite the fact that materialism reigns supreme in our times, loyal and devoted friends can still be found. These types of friendships are increasingly rare that they deserve not only to be cherished but lavished with gratitude.

THE HONEYMOON IS OVER.

NOW WHAT?

Every relationship goes through that stage of extreme euphoria where the couple cannot get enough of each other and all they want to do is hang out and be together in the same space, breathe the same air and basically bond and be one (literally!!). It’s scary I tell you. When you are in it, there seems to be only two people in the world; you two! For some people it is a real honeymoon (that special trip after a wedding). For others it’s those first few months of a relationship.

Sadly this does not last. After a while of being in a relationship, the downs after the ups start. Now some couples are lucky to fight it out, weather the storm and ultimately stay together for long periods of time. However this stage is very tough for many couples because it is a reality check for both of you; you suddenly start seeing things you never saw at the beginning of your relationship; or maybe they were not in the way for you then but now they are.

Let’s list a few of them down, shall we? THOSE ANNOYING HABITS

Are you working for your money or is your money working for you? Assets and Liabilities are two of the most misunderstood things in this world and for most who do not have great financial habits understanding them is one thing that can help tremendously to bring things in line for you.

Assets Vs Liabilities “An Asset is something that puts money into your pocket without the need to work for it.” Using money you have earned to invest into a venture that makes you more money (over and above your original investment) is an Asset. Renting out a house you own (as long as the rent collected covers your costs) is an asset. Money in savings or money loaned out that is collecting interest for you is an asset. Shares bought in a well chosen, high performing company that gives you a handsome return periodically is an asset. Well researched precious metals bought that continue to go up in value is an asset. Any business that has made more than the cost of setting up and running it (including start up capital) is an asset. Any item that you have either made or bought that you sell or resell at a profit is an asset. A car that works for you, i.e. a taxi or limo service that makes more than what it costs to run is an asset. A computer that you use

to make money online (after the cost of the computer and what it takes to run it is taken out) is an asset.

“A Liability is something that takes money out of your pocket.” Your house, if you own and live in it, is a Liability. If you paid cash for it, it owes you that amount, if not then you are paying the mortgage, utilities, insurance, maintenance and any other costs associated with owning and living in a house. Only when you sell your house and you make a profit (after all costs have been deducted on it) does it become an asset. Your car is a Liability. You must pay to maintain it, insure it and put gas into it. The exception would be if your car was an integral part of your business and the profits far outweighed the costs, it is then an asset. Grocery items, insurance, entertainment, purchases for the home, hair cuts.....

anything that is only taking money out of your pocket is a liability and the big shocker is your job....most jobs are liabilities, why? Ask yourself this question: Are you being paid what you are worth? You are trading time for money and working for your money instead of having it work for you. For most, the daily grind of going to work, paying the bills and saving a little for vacation and retirement is purely an existence in liability. Making the switch in your mind from liability thinking to asset thinking can be challenging but where there is a will there is always a way. It is a great thing to have your fingers in several pies but start off with one at a time and build up.

So, the lesson to be learned here is to earn your money first then make sure to invest the bulk of it in things and activities that will continue to earn you more money. www.mammagazinetz.com • 25

• INSURANCE •

Life Insurance simplified Love! When you love someone, be it your wife, husband or children, you always want what is best for them. You want to give them the best that life has to offer. Yet sometimes things don’t happen the way you would want them to, especially when faced with the reality of death forcing you to leave them behind. When that time comes, you want to make sure that everything else will be okay for those that you’ll leave behind.

H

ave you ever asked yourself this question? If I die, what would happen to my family? Will they be able to cope with life’s hardships? Whatever the answer, one thing is for sure; Life will still go on for them no matter how painful, no matter how hard it may seem. However, you have a chance while you are alive to make things easier and simpler for them when you are gone. How, you might ask...By taking a life insurance cover so that in your absence, your family and loved ones will still be able to go through life’s financial difficulties with ease. So, what exactly is life insurance? Life insurance is a type of insurance that pays money when the insured person in the policy dies. It is a contract between the person insured and the insurance company where the insurance provider would pay a certain amount of money to the beneficiaries of the insured person so long as the insured person’s premiums are current and up to date. The next question you might want to ask is, “do I need insurance?” Usually people

with families and loved ones that they want to provide comfort to when sudden situations or emergencies arise would say yes. Having life insurance is a form of relief from financial troubles when a major turn around in life takes place. You may think that life insurance is for old people who would have the tendency to use it more than the younger generation does. Unfortunately, accidents and sicknesses that eventually lead to death can happen at any point in life regardless of age. The reason why people need life insurance is to provide a financial cushion for your loved ones when your partner or loved one dies. Life insurance is a way of continuing support and care for the loved ones left behind, making the financial difficulties of living without you a little easier to handle. Life insurance is not only for those people who have families to take care of. Even single people should have life insurance as it would ensure that all your expenses in connection with hospital and burial are well handled. Having beneficiaries doesn’t mean they have to be blood

relatives. Beneficiaries can be your best friend or even a charitable institution. It is important to note that, there are certain types of life insurance covers that carry a cash value. This type provides you with a valuable asset that can be used as a bond on loans or even against the policy itself when the need arises. There will be times in your life that having a cash value in your life insurance would be a great help to tide you over during these hard times. In conclusion, there are different types of life insurance covers and it is important to familiarize yourself with the different options available before selecting a life insurance cover for yourself. Remember, life insurance policies should not only offer protection and security for you and your family, but it should also provide you with peace of mind and comfort when you need it.

To choose the best cover, always speak with a reputable insurance agent or provider that will answer any queries you may have.

Becoming a pilot is an answer that many children give when asked what their dream career is. Yet few go on to pursue this fulfilling and exciting career path. MAN Magazine spoke to Angelo Fernandez, a pilot with a passion for flying. He gives us an insight on how to pursue this noble career, as well as the highs and lows of being a pilot. To become a pilot is considered a dream career by many. Did you always want to become a pilot? Well, growing-up I was always fascinated by flying and airplanes, but I have to admit I never really aspired to become a pilot. In fact it was only a month before I actually signed up for flight-school that I really focused on a career in commercial aviation. Everything just suddenly fell into place, I stumbled across an E-mail advertisement that proclaimed “Learn to Fly” and just felt compelled to give it a try and so went on a Fam-Flight (familiarization flight). It was after the FamFlight that becoming a pilot became a real aspiration. And now I cannot think of myself doing anything else, it has become more of a hobby than a job really. I love flying and being a pilot.

Where did you train for your pilot licence and how long did the training take you? I did my pilot training and acquired my commercial aviation license in Vancouver Canada through a program with the University of British Columbia. Normally the training period is about six months if done all at once, but it took me about a year and a half as I did the training in parts over a couple of periods.

What do you enjoy about your job?

for several days without prior notice. This can make personal plans and scheduling difficult, especially around the holidays. It is one of those things about being a pilot, your personal life is shaped by your flying, but ultimately this is a minor bother really.

What advice would you give to someone who is aspiring to become a pilot? Aside from a visceral love of flying and being lucky to do it as a career, it is a very fulfilling occupation. I know what I do requires a level of expertise and responsibility. I also enjoy the respect and prestige of being a pilot. I enjoy interacting with my passengers, I always get a warm and pleasant response from my passengers, and it feels great to know I got them where they needed to be. I have also flown a lot of Medivac flights which are the most fulfilling because they afford me the opportunity to save lives, to really make a difference when it matters most. It is an aspect of my occupation that I am very proud of and feel very fortunate that I can make such a difference.

Just go for it! It’s the most satisfying job I know and I have never come across a pilot who regretted becoming one. It can be very difficult at first and it takes a lot of commitment. I can remember times when I wondered whether it was even worth it, but as you near the thousand hour mark (1000 flight hours) you see the light at the end of the tunnel and it all becomes second nature. I certainly have no regrets and thoroughly love what I do, so again, just go for it.

What do you find challenging about your job? The only aspect of being a pilot that I find challenging is the sometimes uncertain scheduling, there are occasions when operations require that I fly a trip that may have me out of station (Dar-Es-Salaam)

Get that PROMOTION!

Advancing in your career is something you should take ownership of. For many men, the biggest challenge at work isn’t trying to do the work well. No, for most of us the challenge at work is to get acknowledged -- to have the good work we’re already doing get noticed by our superiors and coworkers. Here are few things you can do to increase your chances of standing out at work and getting one step closer to that desired promotion

Learn to communicate well

education

Being able to communicate well in all forms can help you to stand out in many ways. Your writing is noticed by clients and colleagues. The way you speak on the phone and handle calls professionally is also noted. Having the ability to conduct presentations and speak in front of others can help you to be seen as a leader.

Education can help you earn the credentials you need to be eligible for a promotion at work. Take advantage of any on the job training and industry certification opportunities that come your way. Go back for that college degree you’ve always wanted. Then make sure your boss and the HR manager know how much you want a promotion and that your education is the key to this advancement.

Don’t sit quietly in meetings Speak up, participate, but don’t monopolize the meeting; you don’t want to be that guy in the meeting who seems to love the sound of his own voice. Making your voice and opinion heard may be a key part of standing out at work, but listening to other people’s views is equally important.

Keep yourself well groomed Dress for the job you want, not the job you have! Style and grooming play a critical part in how others perceive you. Taking a few minutes to look sharp every day can do a lot for how people perceive you. If your hair and nails look clean and well groomed, and your breath is fresh, you’re halfway there.

Keep a bookshelf

Books in the workplace are a sign of intelligence. A few good reads, especially business books, give the impression that you are trying to grow yourself professionally. If you’re trying to get promoted, that’s the exact kind of message you want to send.

Be a doer not a complainer Instead of constantly complaining about how things are at work, do your best to make sure your contribution is one of building things up. Give suggestions for improvements rather than simply distributing pessimism.

Succeed at selling Having a business idea is one thing but selling that idea to other people is a total different ball game. If you can’t sell your idea it is practically worthless.

A

lthough most people do not openly admit this, sales people have been creatures of resentment in the society for years. That is why we never hear of parents encouraging their children to become sales people. Yet no business has ever succeeded without effective selling of a service or a product. Think about it; Where would we be if it wasn’t for great sales men and women who sold to us great ideas? Now the BIG question is, how can you become a great salesperson? That can only be possible if you follow these rules:

more out of emotions than they do out of logic. You get a headache, you buy panadol. Someone steals your mobile phone, you get angry you go look for a cheap one. You’re single and want to attract good looking girls, you buy a nice car. Understand the underlying prospect’s emotions and tell them how they will feel if they buy your products or service. If they feel good, they will buy.

This is by far the most powerful form of selling than any other method I know of. Educate your customers and clients before making any sale. When you educate, they feel that you care. And when you care for their wellbeing they will love you for it and pay you money. Lots of it.

Become a Social Entrepreneur What is social entrepreneurship? There is no universal definition of it but generally Social entrepreneurship is a way of solving most pressing social problems by using entrepreneurial and business principles. In social entrepreneurship we take an advantage of skills which have made conventional entrepreneurs and businessmen successful and use them to establish social initiatives in form of business or projects focusing on solving crucial social problems. These established ventures go by a title of social enterprises or social businesses depending on their model of operation. Success in social entrepreneurship is measured by positive social impact and not profit made. This means that profit is just a means to an end and not an ultimate goal and it should always be used to expand the same social enterprise and sustain it and not find itself going into someone’s pocket. Social entrepreneurs empower poor people economically or by an unusual way of doing business.

Can you give examples of businesses that can be considered as social enterprises?

ERICK CHRISPIN: is an experienced national and international trainer on Social Entrepreneurship

34 • www.mammagazinetz.com

Wonder Workshop in Dar es salaam is one of the biggest examples of a social enterprise existing in Tanzania. This workshop was made to serve disabled beggars in Dar es salaam city by creating employment for them through training them to create artistic products out of recycled materials like metal, leftover wood pieces, glasses, used papers, pineapple tops, onions peels etc. Different designs of products made out of these materials are sold and the income generated helps to pay salaries to these disabled people and workshop’s

running costs. Apart from supporting these disabled people who were beggars, Wonder Workshop contributes in cleaning the city for it uses used materials and leftovers which could be dumped somewhere in the city. This is an example of a social enterprise which runs in a business model. Kigamboni Community Center (KCC) is another example of a social enterprise which was setup to help street children and youth not only to go back home, but also do something to develop personally. These children are convinced to come together at KCC and get trained in different talents like acrobats, traditional and modern dances etc, from which they perform on different occasions and get paid. The income generated pays them for the work they do, support KCC running costs and also support many other children from poor families in Kigamboni community to get free tuition education at KCC.

a dream to make a positive change in the world, if you want to leave a mark and be recognized before you die, then being a social entrepreneur should be your channel of choice. You may have a lot of money but if you lack a sense of humanity then satisfaction is not easy to achieve. If you were to talk to most social entrepreneurs, they will tell you how good and proud they are being part of a minority group of people who are contributing in making their society better by changing the lives of others, especially the poor. Social entrepreneurship is a real demonstration of how empowering poor people can help reduce poverty especially in developing countries.

What is the most rewarding aspect of social entrepreneurship?

Social entrepreneurship has proved that people are naturally eager to contribute in their society and the world at large thus explaining why there is a high influx of people now engaging in it. If you have

I always tell those who participate in my trainings that if they have a desire to make change in this society then they need to turn their thinking to the social entrepreneurship approach. This is because the free market environment in Tanzania gives one the needed room and freedom to use their creativity and the locally available resources to do something that will be supported and accepted by this market. While doing this, change in the society will be realized. Let us be social entrepreneurs and forget the CHARITY syndrome, which deprives our people of the power to being independent. Erick Chrispin is an experienced trainer, author and a talented motivational speaker. He trains on Social Entrepreneurship in 5 regions in rural Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar. He is currently involved in international social entrepreneurship trainings to youths under the ActionAid Denmark Global Platform Tanzania. He is also training, writing and speaking on personal development, leadership, management, business and entrepreneurship psychology development to organizations, companies and individuals in Tanzania.

Are there any facilities that assist people in becoming social entrepreneurs? To start a social enterprise first of all one needs to have an entrepreneurial mindset, meaning you must be resourceful. You need to look at the many pressing social problems surrounding you, then generate a brilliant idea that will need you to probably start a social enterprise by using available local resources, ensure its sustainability from which it must follow entrepreneurial principles. The outcome of its application in the real world could be realizing an intended impact in the society. This idea is what will determine all the facilities you need to start your social enterprise.

What advice do you have for someone interested in becoming a social entrepreneur?

What are some of the challenges a social entrepreneur can expect to face? A social entrepreneur here in Tanzania is likely to encounter many challenges, caused by majorly he lack of understanding of this concept. For instance, many people struggle to differentiate social entrepreneurship with the traditional entrepreneurship especially when it comes to distributing the profit that comes out of your social enterprise. However, if your intention for starting the model was not to make profits but to change society through the profits you make, then it becomes easy for you to overcome the challenges. A social entrepreneur should never be motivated by money, but by positively changing lives.

The Business Wisdom of Steve Jobs: 250 Quotes from the Innovator Who Changed the World

By: Alan Ken Thomas Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Inc., was truly one of this generation’s most innovative and forward-thinking entrepreneurs. Apple, under his vision and direction, changed the way people interact with each other and think about technology. Known as much for his genius as his privacy, the advice and knowledge he did share with the world gives exclusive insight into the mind of this great leader and innovator.

Words of Wisdom “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma—which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.” Steve Jobs

Imany calls herself a proud black woman. One of ten children, Imany was born in 1979 as Nadia Mladjao on the Comoros Islands and grew up in suburban Paris. She started modelling in her teens and worked as a sought after model for several years in the US before heading back to Paris to start a music career. Within a few months she had gained a good reputation through her performance at gigs in jazz bars and clubs. In 2010, she became the opening act for the Angie Stone tour.

F

or Imany, Africa is often her inspiration. “I wanted to improve the way I drew, so one day a designer friend of mine suggested that I closed my eyes, thought of something and let my hand do the drawing. At the time I was thinking of the continent. When I opened my eyes I realised I’d drawn a broken heart,” she admits. “Then it hit me: when you look closely, Africa has the shape of a broken heart. From that, a song was born.” That, and the name of her debut album, The Shape Of A Broken Heart. It was released in 2011 and has gone platinum. Critics lauded it for her blend of afro soul and

funk and she earned comparisons to her idol Tracy Chapman. Her first single from the album, You Will Never Know, has racked up over 5million hits on YouTube. Her deep husky voice is a great contrast to her slender body and distinctly beautiful face. She believes her voice, something that she was ashamed of for a long time, has become her greatest asset. She has said “as a young girl, I was very ashamed of my voice and yet I secretly dreamt of one day being a singer. I overcame what I considered a flaw and made it into a quality. Took me a long time but now I think it’s my greatest success”. Her soothing and meaningful songs are the perfect accompaniment to any relaxing and unwinding activity. With her melodic and surprisingly deep sounds, Imany is creating music that is timeless. One thing for sure is that, Imany is destined for greatness.

Vibrant Beijing Soaring high with its towering skyscrapers, Beijing is one of the busiest cities of Asia. With busy roads teeming with speeding cars, plenty of high-rise buildings and more under construction, high levels of pollution and industrious people, it’s hard to not be daunted by this city. Yet, when you see the grandeur of the Forbidden City, the splendour of the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven and the magnificent world wonder called the Great Wall of China, you forget the chaos of the city and look forward to see more of China’s heritage on display.

T

he 2008 Olympics gave the city a complete makeover enabling better facilities and efficient public transport for tourists. With plenty of palaces, monuments, temples, attractive gardens and more than a hundred museums, Beijing is definitely a place worth visiting. Since the city faces extremes of temperature, it’s better to visit in the milder seasons of spring or autumn. Apart from the above mentioned attractions, Beijing also has the Beihai Park, the Beijing Aquarium, the Great Bell Temple, Tainanmen Square and The Beijing National Stadium. The Beijing World Park, Sony Explorascience Museum and Happy Valley Amusement Park are a few places where kids can have their share of holiday fun. Unlike many other capital cities, Beijing

40 • www.mammagazinetz.com

has plenty of tourist attractions; so time your visit in order to get the best out of your holiday here. Beijing’s size and traffic can make it hard to pack different attractions into a day’s schedule. The best way to move around would be by using the subway or renting a bicycle. Shopping is unavoidable in Beijing. Get great deals on China tea, jade, electronics, antiques, watches and jewellery in one of the many markets and malls. Main shopping haunts include Xiu Shui Market, Xidan, Hong Qaio Market and Liulichang. Beijing Tea Street is an interesting place where you can get not only the best of teas, but also lovely tea sets and tables. Of course, the food you eat in Beijing has to be Chinese; but not the western version of Chinese takeaway food. Explore authentic Chinese food in food streets like the Donghuamen Night

Market, Guanganmen Snack Street or Gui Street to experience the real taste of China. While it’s a sin to visit Beijing without sampling its famous Peking roast duck, make sure you also try other dishes from the lengthy menus of Chinese restaurants. An advantage about visiting Beijing is that, in spite of being a capital city, it isn’t very expensive, especially when compared to the city’s western counterparts. Decent accommodation along with food and travel by public transport can work out to be very cheap when compared to major cities in Europe or America. Just make sure you don’t get caught in tourist traps like cheap “foot massages” or free shopping trips to a silk factory or jade factory. Since English is not widely spoken, it may be tough to get around without a little knowledge of Mandarin. Keep a handy translation book or gadget ready.

Are you a Resident or a Citizen? Destinations to visit When you travel within Tanzania, the best places and easily accessible to visit and enjoy a safari include Arusha National Park, Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Serengeti National Park, Mikumi National Park, Udzungwa Mountains National Park, Saadani National Park and of course the famous Selous Game Reserve.

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara and Tarangire can be visited all the time.

How to get there To get to any of the destinations listed it depends on your budget also. Transport options include; water way – speed boats which run between Dar Es Salaam and Zanzibar, commercial flights between Dar Es Salaam to Selous, Mafia, Zanzibar, Ruaha and Saadani National Parks. There are also

some commercial flights operating between Arusha and Serengeti, Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Mwanza, Lake Manyara, and West Kilimanjaro. Ruaha and Katavi National Parks can also be easily accessible through regular flights. Arusha, Mkomazi, Mikumi and Udzungwa are easily accessible through surface roads as other parks. For your information, TAZARA railway passes through Selous National Park.

Duration It depends on your availability, pick up and drop up, means of transport, etc. Even one day can be enough. It is very possible to spend one of your weekends in wild environment.

Best Time to Visit June to November is Tanzania’s dry season and is the best time to visit all the parks, especially Tanzania’s Southern Parks. They become more difficult to reach during the wet season and during the dry season the animals tend to congregate around permanent water and it isn’t so hot and humid.

Mbudya

Island

Mbudya Island is an uninhabited island on the north of Dar Es Salaam. It is one of the four islands of the Dar Es Salaam Marine Reserve(DMRS).

Mbudya Island is this month’s MAN Magazine hotspot for several reasons: •

It is easily reachable by means of a mere 20 minute motorboat ride from Kunduchi hence making it an ideal day trip to escape the hassle and bustle (and traffic) of Dar on the weekend. • It has clean and white sandy beaches bordered by crystal clear warm blue waters, so whether you simply want to lie by the beach or have a relaxing swim in the sea, Mbudya caters for both. • If simple, affordable and delicious seafood is what you are after, then the cooks at Mbudya do not disappoint. You can enjoy a lobster and many other types of seafood while sitting under one of the islands hundreds of palm trees. Once done, you can hire a Banda and take a nap that is sure to guarantee sweet dreams. • The Island is easy to reach. To get there, one of many local motorized dhows and ngalawas can be hired. The hotels i.e. White Sands, Silver Sands, Kunduchi Beach, Beach Comber and Bahari Beach are able to provide more modern transport to the island. So there you have it. Mbudya is piece of paradise right on the door steps of our great, but sometimes oh so stressful, city of Dar-es-Salaam.

Excel at Teamwork

The other day my little boy was going about his business as he always does when he found himself alone with no one to play with, well, except the dog. I guess the dog had gotten tired too and decided to take a nap, but the young one not wanting to sleep decided to keep himself busy with his toys. Most of the times he plays with cars, robots, planes, etc…. a typical boy.

However on this day, he was busy putting together some pieces of a bird puzzle we had bought him some time back. To get the actual bird image, you would have to put each piece in its rightful place until eventually, you come up with the complete bird. It took me a while to figure out the right place for each piece, and that’s why I was pleasantly surprised to find that my four-year old was doing it so easily; he had managed to figure out exactly what piece went where to finally come up with the complete bird image.>>

Reliability

No one wants to work with someone who cannot be relied on or depended upon. A good team member is one who gets work done and does his fair share to work hard and meet commitments. He or she follows through on assignments and goes an extra mile. Besides delivering, he/she is consistent in the sense that you can count on him or her to deliver good performance all the time, not just some of the time.

As I sat there watching him, it occurred to me that the same concept he was using works for teams. Every member of whatever team, be it a sports team or a project team must have certain characteristics in order to play their role effectively. Like the broken pieces of the birds, every member of the team represents a piece of the puzzle that makes up the team (bird), and unless each piece is placed where it should be, then the final bird will not be derived. So, what are the characteristics of effective team players? Below are ten characteristics that each team member should ideally possess in any successful team:

48 • www.mammagazinetz.com

Constructive Communication - Teams need people who speak up and express their thoughts and ideas clearly, directly, honestly, and with respect for the work of the team. Such a team member does not shy away from making a point but makes it in the best way possible — in a positive, confident, and respectful manner, thus, communicating constructively.

Active Listeners - Good listeners are essential for teams to function effectively. Teams need team players who can absorb, understand, and consider ideas and points of view from other people without debating and arguing every point. Such a team

member also can receive criticism without reacting defensively. Most important, for effective communication and problem solving, team members need the discipline to listen first and speak second so that meaningful dialogue results. It is not by chance that we have two ears and one mouth; we need to listen more than we speak!

Active participants - Good team players are active participants. They come prepared for team meetings and listen and speak up in discussions. They are fully engaged in the work of the team and do not sit passively on the sidelines. Team members who function as active participants also take the initiative to help make things happen,>

and they volunteer for assignments. Their main focus is always; “What contribution can I make to help the team achieve success?”

Share openly and willingly - Good team players willingly share information, knowledge and experience. They take the initiative to keep other team members informed. Much of the communication within teams takes place informally. Good team players are active in this informal sharing. They keep other team members in the loop with information and expertise that helps get the job done.

They Cooperate and pitch in to help - Cooperation is the act of working with others and acting together to accomplish a job. Effective team players work this way by default, as second nature. Good team players, despite the numerous differences they may have with other team members concerning style and perspective, figure out ways to work together to solve problems and get work done. They respond to requests for assistance and take the initiative to offer help.

Committed to the team - Strong team players care about their work, the team, and the team’s work. They show up every day with this care and commitment up front. They want to give a good effort, and they want other team members to do the same.

Work as problem-solvers – I am of the opinion that the whole reason why teams are created is to address particular problems. Good team players are willing to address all kinds of problems and find the appropriate solutions. They are problem-solvers, not problem-dwellers, problem-blamers, or problem-avoiders. They don’t simply rehash a problem the way problemdwellers do. They don’t look for others to fault, as the blamers do. And they don’t put off dealing with issues, the way avoiders do. Team players get problems out in the open for discussion and then collaborate with others to find solutions and form action plans.

Respectful and supportive Team players treat fellow team members with courtesy and consideration — not

just some of the time but consistently. In addition, they show understanding and the appropriate support of other team members to help get the job done. They don’t place conditions on when they’ll provide assistance, when they’ll choose to listen, and when they’ll share information. Good team players also have a good sense of humor and know how to have fun (and all teams can use a bit of both), but they don’t have fun at someone else’s expense. Quite simply, effective team players deal with other people in a professional manner. There could be many other characteristics of successful team players, but we believe most have been captured in the ten we have summed up above. If your team has been failing, now you know where you could have been going wrong. Work towards acquiring the above characteristics and you will have one of the strongest teams around. Characteristics of effective team players highlighted are adapted from Managing Teams for Dummies.

Exhibit flexibility - Teams often deal with changing conditions. Good team players roll with the punches and they adapt to all the ever-changing situations. They don’t complain or get stressed out because something new is being tried out or some new direction is being set. In addition, a flexible team member can consider different points of views and compromise when needed. He or she doesn’t hold rigidly to a point of view and argue it to death, especially when the team needs to move forward to make a decision or get something done. Strong team players are firm in their thoughts yet open to what others have to offer — flexibility at its best.

• MANAGEMENT • By: Azim Jamal

Achieve a balanced life If you define balance as requiring equal portions to different areas of your life then most successful people – CEO’s, Nobel Prize winners, Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Bono, Mother Theresa - would not be living balanced lives! These are people who are too busy doing what is really important.

W

hat one needs to consider is that balance means putting enough quantitative and qualitative time to what is important

to you! So really what you are looking for is a meaningful existence and place for all your passion, versus just covering the bases. The secret to Maya Angelou, who is one of the most popular living poets, Emmy Award winning actress and producer and mentor to Oprah Winfrey, is finding many ways to feed her soul. Balance for you may also mean, “finding many ways to feed your soul”. So what does balance mean to you?

What does balance mean to you? For some it may be the balance between home and work; between body, mind and spirit; or between materialism and spirituality. Some feel balanced if they are able to spend enough quantitative and qualitative time in what is important to them. Others look at being balanced when they are centered and able to navigate challenges and opportunities. Balance is not static. It is a dynamic blend of body, mind and spirit. Balance can also be looked at as a marriage of passion and reason – seeing with “both eyes” as the Sufis would put it. The eye of reason and the eye of passion. Reason without passion is lame and passion without reason is blind. Gibran says, “For reason alone is a force confining; and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to its destruction.”

Taking clients out for breakfast, lunch or dinner has long been an effective way to build relationships, make the sale or seal the deal. These business meals are essentially business meetings. By. Dr. Tengio Urrio The study analyzed data entered into cancer registries across the U.S. between 1977 and 2006. Of the 36 cancer types reviewed during this 30 years period, men had lower death rates than women from only three rare cancers: cancer of the covering in the abdomen (peritoneum), the fat in the abdomen (omentum), the section of the intestines that carries the blood vessels (mesentery); cancer of the gall bladder and cancer of the rectum.

According to the study, the top five biggest disparities in cancer death rates were for the following 5, again, rare types of cancers: 1. Cancer of the lip - 5.5 men died from cancer of the lip for every one woman who died of the same; 2. Cancer of the larynx (voice box) 5.4 men died from cancer of the voice box for every one woman who died of the same; 3. Cancer of the hypo pharynx - 4.47 men died from cancer of the hypo pharynx for every one woman who died of the same; 4. Cancer of the esophagus (food gullet) - 4.1 men died from cancer of the esophagus for every one woman who died of the same; 5. Cancer of the bladder - 3.4 men died from cancer of the bladder for every one woman who died of the same. The above were comparisons of cancer deaths for the rare cancers (rare in the US) lip, voice box, hypo pharynx, food gullet and the bladder. Men also die at much higher rates from the most common forms of cancers that affect both men and women. The study found out that over the course of the 30 years

hearing LOSS

The human ear is composed of three parts, each a part having a designated function. This means that hearing is a step by step process that depends on the proper functioning of the various parts of the ear. Needless to say, the whole process takes a fraction of a second to complete. Malfunctioning of any part of the ear causes a hearing impairment. In order to understand more about hearing impairment, it is imperative to have a general understanding of the parts of the ear, its construction and functions.

The STRESS killer

Most of us are familiar with the fact that music has an effect on our mood and feelings. It can allow us to relax or help us to come alive. Some people even find it hard to function without continuous background music. The great news is that music has been shown to effectively reduce stress and anxiety. If you are looking for a quick and easy way to reduce stress, then perhaps it’s time to try a regular dose of your favorite music. Read on to find out how music can help you reduce stress and anxiety.

FATHER, SON

The fire of anger can, it seems, be ignited by any number of negative conditions or situations from disillusionment, to abandonment, loneliness, even social, personal or sexual disappointment, to the realisation that our political and religious leaders have lied their way into our hearts and minds, etc. The list of situations is endless but the one common thing is that once the stubborn flames of anger are ignited, they may seem almost impossible to extinguish.

• INTERIOR DECOR •

Organized, well-decorated spaces offer comfort and enjoyment to both men and women. But the interior decorating tips and ideas most home decorating sources provide for women often leave men feeling left out. Masculine decorating doesn’t have to be a challenge, and even men who are intimidated by the term “interior decorating” can create a fitting living space. Gone are the days that if you cared about decoration, you were thought not to be a straight man. I am talking about little changes that can make a huge difference in your place, and turn your pad from a living space to a stylish guy’s palace.

Manly Decor

Let the following ideas inspire you to upgrade your place and constantly improve your image; besides you are where you live, right? Wall Painting Use neutral colors when decorating so you can add bold accessories to your living space without overwhelming the area. For instance, paint the walls beige, grey or pewter, so your black or dark blue sofa, white love seat, or artwork that features a number of hues will look great in the room. While neutrals are a “safer” option, softer shades of earth tones are gaining popularity. Some popular wall colors include cappuccino or mocha brown, sage green and light blue. Don’t limit yourself to one-dimensional options; you can consider a more textured painting technique, or you can opt for “special effect” paint, which has different textures like denim, suede, linen, and sandstone, which can add a whole other effect to your walls.

68 • www.mammagazinetz.com

A splash of red in a room is a dramatic touch for man’s home.

• INTERIOR DECOR • Masculine Furnishing Comfort is key when choosing furniture for a man’s home. Delicate chairs and flowery patterns are not appropriate, but furnishings in the contemporary style suit a masculine look. Try furniture colors such as brown, beige, dark blue or black for a masculine contemporary home. Toss pillows in a bold color prevent the furnishings from becoming boring.

Other living room accessories that can create drama in man’s home are 1. Coffee table: An ottoman can also serve as a coffee table. Side stools are good for serving drinks to guest 2. Rug: You can go funky with a bright shag carpet or classic with a traditional area rug. 3. Aquarium with exotic fish 4. Flower Vases filled with fresh bamboo, stones, or apples, pears, lemon, or lime 5. A recliner chair is a man’s room staple feature. 6. A small personal bar added to a living or dining area will create that smooth, classy look that is also functional. Heavy granite counter tops of gray match well with deeply stained mahogany wood. 7. Metallic lamps and lighting fixtures complete the modern look in a masculine home. Have multiple layers of lighting in your living room and bedroom to control the amount of light in the room.

Some of the earliest thermometers—used in the 1600s—contained brandy instead of mercury. The liquor was eventually replaced with mercury due to the latter material’s wider range of liquid-state temperature.

Brandy is the alcoholic beverage that causes the most severe hangovers.

Cognac is the best known type of Brandy in the world, a benchmark by which most other Brandies are judged

Brandy typically contains between 40 and 45 percent alcohol by volume, and it is considered a relatively high alcohol beverage.

In ancient times, Brandy was used as a sleeping aid to help people suffering from insomnia.

The scent of the liquid tickled her nose hairs and she squeezed her eyes shut, knowing that her next action would have unpleasant consequences. She tilted her head back and poured it down her gullet, sputtering miserably at the burning sensation in her mouth and throat. Her belly was on fire. Elizabeth stuck out her tongue in a vain attempt to ease the terrible spiced burning in her mouth. Suddenly, she understood why men sipped their brandy. http://www.fanfiction.net

Understanding Golf The word Golf originates from the Dutch word ‘kolf’ or ’kolve’, meaning ‘club’. Later, the word evolved and became ’goff’ or ’gouff, in the Scottish dialect and since the latter part of the 16th century, the word Golf has existed. The most popular acronym for Golf, heard mostly among men, is that Golf stands for ‘Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden.’ Of course this is not true, as golf is perhaps one of the most equal and unisex sport around.

Don’t Blame It On The

Coaches www.mammagazinetz.com • 83

Every organization, as you very well know, has its vision, mission…… well I should just say, an agenda for where they want to go. The wise ones always look at the past to see where they want to be in the future by gauging market trends, checking the competition and engaging in constructive board meetings. What I am saying is quite obvious but some don’t realize that sports organizations run on the same principles as corporate business entities.

With the recent trend of firing coaches of teams that did not do well on the league, I’m surprised that coaching as a profession has not been declared “hazardous to health”. Even more puzzling is, why do coaches take up jobs with teams that sometimes have unreasonable, albeit optimistic, expectations? My guess is that they have the passion and love for the game as well as the experience and skills to believe they can make a team better and hopefully, win all key matches. So, is it fair to blame the coach when things don’t go accordingly? My answer is a resounding NO! Think of it this way; before a company decides to employ key people into their administration, they do a thorough background check on the individual and once satisfied, the job interview is often just a formality. At least this is how I think it should be done. My point is that, when a football organization decides it wants a certain coach to take them to the land of milk and honey, they already know his track record and abilities. Obviously, with experience comes wisdom and it is that wisdom that has given them the names they have as the best coaches. Let’s take a few obvious names like Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, and Arsene Wenger - yes him too:-). From my personal perspective, what I see being the challenge in some areas is that coaches are not being given complete control to make decisions. It is hard for me to imagine that many people ever opposed Sir Alex Ferguson’s

Yes there are things and areas that have been controversial but he has quite a record on him. Then we have Arsene Wenger, so economical with the millions at Arsenal, so into his own style of play and players and still at the club. Yes he has won titles before, the only problem is that many are struggling to remember when that was. Personally, I like that the top brass at Arsenal still believe in him and have faith in him thus far. I read a tweet recently @101greatgoals-”Tony Adams: It’s time that Arsenal won something again, even the FA Cup or League Cup. But I can’t see it. They are miles off the title”. ‘They call it garbage;

we call it opportunity’

Mr. Said M. Said is determined to make waste management and beautiful public spaces everybody’s business. This hardworking, committed and innovative environmental entrepreneur talks about the dangers of a dirty city and the changes the NIPE FAGIO initiative seeks to bring about. MAN Magazine correspondent, Nils von der Assen, spoke to him to learn more about his determined quest for a cleaner and greener Dar-es-Salaam.

Mr. Said Said

www.mammagazinetz.com • 87

You are tackling environmental and waste management challenges in Dar-es-salaam head on. Can you tell us a little about the Nipe Fagio initiative? ‘We founded Nipe Fagio in 2005 with Adam Kasale and the group, out of passion and need to be the change agents that this city needs in order to build a platform for environmental care for all with a common vision to design, share, cooperate, inspire, celebrate and sustain a culture of cleanliness. Just like other major cities across Africa, we were not spared challenges, untill we met with Tania Hamilton, Anton, Mandy Fuller after the Jagwani flood, who added a new force to our team. Together with our co-founders we had the common interest and chemistry to work for the environment, for the benefit of the citizens, driven by the citizens themselves. Tania and the group added a new focus and zeal for NIPE FAGIO to stay focused and on course. We are an environmental advocacy organisation seeking to raise nation-wide awareness about environmental pollution, specifically problems occurring from a surplus of waste, as well as to introduce innovative solutions to these problems. We believe that every single citizen of Dar es Salaam has got a role to play when it comes to battling the problem of urban pollution/waste.

70 per cent of the city’s population is based. Considering the fact that these informal settlements and the people that inhabit them are growing in number fast – Dar’s population is expanding at a 4.7 per cent rate –we are talking about a very large group of people who face a high and increasing risk of diseases brought about by poor sanitation levels. There is an increasing demand for action and NIPE FAGIO is part of that action - by joining hands with Government initiatives and all stakeholders on deliverables.

What prompted you to start this initiative in Tanzania?

With the problem so omnipresent and large-scale, ‘wiping the city clean’ seems like a Herculean task.

I have been working in the environmental field for the past twenty years. I grew up in the Canadian city of Toronto and was for a long time intrigued by environmental issues and what I found in the Tanzanian Cities. During my years in Toronto I became involved in initiatives that were working towards a cleaner environment in big cities. When I moved to Dar es Salaam, I learnt that , 2- to 3000 tons of waste is produced every day, and only 30 percent of this is eventually taken to a dump. Naturally, this is in every aspect an unhealthy situation. Disease is rife, especially in informal areas where

It is, and it is up to all of us to take action. NIPE FAGIO wants to play a leading role in a practical way through our platform “I’m the change”. In 2006 and early 2007, we freely issued special giant, stainless-steel litterbins to the districts of Kinondoni and Ilala and installed them as a means to make citizens, special groups and the government aware of the problem and our intentions to form a platform. We see the need to educate Dar es Salaam’s citizens from top to bottom regarding waste handling, management and its features, social, economical benefits and environmental

88 • www.mammagazinetz.com

as well as risk associated with no action to resolve the current situation. The government does not have to deal with the issues of waste alone as for the longest period there were no specific budget or agenda concerning waste management and handling. It is our goal to assist in creating the positive change that will cause the top levels of ministerial and government agents to see the need to establish a ‘green economy focus group’ within the city, through which the need for a cleaner environment, best practice with regard to climate change and other environmental friendly policies are prioritised. This green economy, and a revolution in waste management, has the potential to bring about so many positive changes. Many people might call it garbage, “we call it opportunity”.

What kind of opportunities does waste management bring? Firstly, precisely because Dar es Salaam is such a big and heavily polluted city, we need many hands to ‘pick up the broom’. A largescale waste management system advance scheme will create many job opportunities, for the highly-educated, the professionals, the skilled and unskilled potential workers. Secondly, by protecting the environment, we will

be taking a big step further towards sustaining a healthy living environment for Dar’s citizens that will increase the level businesses settlements and tourism. A healthy living and safe environment, with clean, coordinated streets, will ultimately benefit people’s health, social and economical activities. Diseases caused by waste and unsanitary environment will drop, as will the demand for medical care for individuals. Finally, a cleaner city will attract more tourists, investors causing an appreciation on property values. Now, the bulk of tourists visiting East Africa see Dar es Salaam as a gateway to Zanzibar, a city to pass through rather quickly. To them, it is just crowded and way too polluted and we can’t sit back and relax.

work to add value to their work and collaboration as well as coordinated environmental think tanks for seeking and unlocking the potential for clean environment mind set in all aspect of clean energy, green economy, clean and safer communities. I think that, as long as we remain idealistic and keep believing in what we are doing, we will eventually bring about change. Success is often preceded by failure;

What challenges have you faced in trying to implement NIPE FAGIO’s vision? Indeed, our goal is not an easy-toreach one, precisely because we need massive cooperation from top to bottom. It is hard to change people’s mindset towards the environment, where there minds are tuned to depend on government and donors. We are having a hard time convincing decision-makers that urgent action is needed, especially those operating at the city and municipal council level, through the inter ministerial level” Waste Management and Environmental care. There are key issues that are integrated within the government’s ministerial setup when it comes to key planning, responsibilities and actions. There is a lot of bureaucracy to deal with, and we have had to deal with disappointments along the way. In 2004, ILO trained a group of women in recycling and in effective road cleansing and waste reduction. The training was a success, but nothing was done afterwards. A big challenge is to ensure that councils will follow up on such programmes.

How do you see the future of NIPE FAGIO? I look at NIPE FAGIO as a platform For many players in the field that will

NIPE FAGIO came after many failed attempts at similar projects. Now, with the help of expertise from Tanzania, Germany, Canadian partners and SAS Tanzania, as well as companies from , South Africa, and Mauritius, things are looking promising. I am very excited about our newest project, which concerns handling and transporting waste by rail to the first private landfill in Tanzania. We intend to provide a value chain in waste management by applying all logistics necessary to facilitate constructive utilization of waste products. We have the right skills, drive and experience required to turn a “dirty problem” into an opportunity; We are here to bring change through the use of innovation, creativity and market driven solutions.

If you could advise aspiring entrepreneurs who want to make a real difference, what would you tell them? Experience has taught me that it is very important to read policies and regulations in your field of operation, in order to understand which bureaucratic

hurdles you might face, so as to think ahead to formulate the relevant strategies to surpass them. You also have to have a clear vision of what the public needs, so that you can tap into the void by building the necessary networks and relationships. Avoid the trap of a corrupt mind-set that you might face and encounter along the way, by being knowledgeable of the people you are working with and set your standards and working principles and live and operate by them. Bring in expertise and a great number of bright minds, for example from universities, PRIVATE SECTORS, Corporates and NGOs. NIPE FAGIO is currently in a fruitful collaboration with the University of Dar es Salaam, JEMA, Roots and Shoots, Seasense, Borda, Schools, Businesses etc.

Last but not least, don’t be put off by a lot of charanga, of “bla bla” work to achieve and be patient, read and gain knowledge for you to better position your dream. www.mammagazinetz.com • 89

How Do I Get Back My Ex After I Cheated On Her

Dear Uncle MAN I have a big problem and I hope you can help me. I would like to get back my ex after I cheated big time on her. She found me out then she dumped me. I now regret cheating on her and I still love her and want her back in my life. I have been in touch with her and apologized, but she does not want to listen and gets angry with me when I call her. Do you have any tips on how I can win her back?

Desperate Dan

Dear Desperate Dan It is good that you realize you made a mistake and you would like to make amends. The first thing you need to do is to try and understand why you chose to cheat, as it is more than likely that you did not plan this originally, as we do not go out of our way to hurt the people we love intentionally. Also understanding the repercussions of your actions can also help you realize that cheating is definitely not an avenue to go through again. You need to start to work on yourself so when you do get in touch with your ex you could inform her that you are going through changes for the better, in the hope that if she does get back with you, she will know that you are no longer a “cheating man”. Give your ex some time before you get in touch with her, and when you do, instead of asking her to get back with you, ask if she if she would like to discuss the breakup with you. Tell her that you know what you did was wrong and if

she needed to ask any questions or release any frustrations that are as a result of your infidelity, she is more than welcome to do so. When you do see each other again, stay calm, apologize and allow her to express any emotions about your cheating that she had bottled up. After that you could tell her that you still care and love her deeply and you understand that you pained her deeply and understand that you broke her trust. You should also point out that you would be grateful if you could make amends with her, and that you are willing to do whatever it takes to get the relationship back on track, and to regain her trust. Remember that it does take time for a relationship to heal after a partner has cheated and whereas some relationships will make it after a partner has cheated, there are other relationships that cannot be repaired.

Be ready to accept either outcome.

When you do see each other again, stay calm, apologize and allow her to express any emotions about your cheating that she had bottled up

IMPRESSING

When I take a long time, I am slow. When my boss takes a long time, he is thorough.

A man asks a trainer in the gym: “I want to impress that beautiful girl, which machine can I use?” The trainer replied; “Use the ATM outside the gym!!!”

When I don’t do it, I am lazy. When my boss doesn’t do it, he’s too busy. When I do it without being told, I’m trying to be smart. When my boss does the same, that is initiative. When I please my boss, that’s brown-nosing. When my boss pleases his boss, that’s co-operating.

FUNNY BOSS

When I do good, my boss never remembers. When I do wrong, he never forgets

The boss returned from lunch in a good mood and as usual called the whole staff in to listen to a couple of jokes he had picked up. Everybody, but one girl laughed uproariously.

Innocent prayer

Once a woman invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said, “Would you like to say the blessing?” she said. “I wouldn’t know what to say,” the girl replied. “Just say what you hear mommy say,” the woman answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, “Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?”.

“What’s the matter?” grumbled the boss. “What happened to your sense of humor?” “I don’t have to laugh anymore,” she replied. “Friday is my last at this job.”

Money for my business

I am inspired

I read article about “7 ways to get money for your business idea” in your last issue of MAN Magazine and it was a real eye opener. I have struggled for one year to find some funding for my business. Your article gave me some really good ideas about different ways I could get money for my business and I am going to try them out. Thank you so much for this article.

I am a student from Dar-es-salaam and I was very inspired by your articles on leadership and the interview of Mr. Zebadiah Moshi. I am studying to become a mechanical engineer but I also would like to have a leadership position one day. From your articles, I have learnt many great lessons about what it takes to become a leader and I hope I get a chance to put them into practice in the future.

Thomas Kitabu, Arusha

Edson Pambani, Dar-Es-Salaam

Ed: I am glad that the advice and tips were helpful for you. Many people have great business ideas and struggle to put them into practice because they are not aware of the different varieties of business financing options available. I hope you will find the necessary funding and your business will become a resounding success.

TANZANIA 50 PLUS CAMPAIGN:

USA Community Outreach Study Tour. Hosted by Prostate Health Education Network – PHEN; of Quincy, Boston, Massachusetts, USA CANCER A MAJOR CONCERN IN TANZANIA: Cancer is a serious problem in the developing world, especially in Africa and Tanzania in particular. Cancer threatens to rival many other diseases in terms of morbidity and mortality in the coming decades. Cancer kills more people each year than HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis (TB) combined. The rise of cancer patients in Tanzania is alarming. Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI), the only cancer institute in Tanzania, reveals in its reports that new cancer cases were 48 in 1975, 916 in 1989, 1639 in 1995, 2866 in 2004, 2,807 in 2006, 3,138, in 2007, 3,480 in 2008 and

5,244. In 2012 ORCI estimated that 21,180 people were diagnosed with cancer yearly and out of which 16,000 die from the disease. In the country as whole, about 95% of cancer patients die at home and about 5% in hospital. In 2012, during a Channel Ten Television interview, Prof. Twalibu Ngoma, Executive Director of Ocean Road Cancer Institute, attested to the fact that 100 cancer patients die in Tanzania per day. With lack of adequate Cancer Registry in Tanzania, the estimates are a reflection of only 10 percent cancer patients registering in hospitals for medical attention. Not much is known on morbidity and mortality of the remaining 90 percent.

ENEMY NUMBER ONE IS IGNORANCE:

USA COMMUNITY OUTREACH STUDY TOUR:

One of the major problems causing a lot of cancer incidences; suffering and deaths is ignorance about the disease. As it is written, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” Hos. 4.6. Tanzania 50 Plus Campaign: Prostate Cancer Literacy, Advocacy and Support Initiatives with its primary goal to reduce the sufferings and deaths caused by prostate cancer have currently intensified cancer education through community outreach techniques’ from within and outside Tanzania. The campaign believes that, “Knowledge is the best defense against cancer”. Knowledge on what cancer is will liberate people’s minds from rumors, false, misconceptions, misinformation, and myths and get rid of syncretism associated with the disease. For those who have fallen prey of the disease, knowledge about cancer can empower them to deal with the disease positively and so live quality life.

It’s through this rationale that from the 12th to the 18th June 2013 a team of four went to USA hosted by Prostate Health Education Network – PHEN of Quincy, Boston, Massachusetts to learn from their community outreach activities which culminated with the Father’s Day Rally. The group leader was Rev. Canon Dr. Emmanuel J. Kandusi, Prostate Cancer Survivor T4, National Campaign Coordinator and Founder of Tanzania 50 Plus Campaign and Mr. Dismas Leone Massawe, CEO and Executive Director Euro Commercials Ltd who publishes MAN Magazine, (MAN Magazine has published several articles to raise awareness about prostate cancer). Ms. Mariam Nassoro a Community Outreach Worker and Mr. Shedmin Luvanda a friend of the campaign in Diaspora were also present.

DANA-FABER CANCER INSTITUTE: Our first visit was Dana Faber Cancer Institute. Since its founding in 1947, Dana-Farber has been committed to providing adults and children with cancer with the best treatment available today while developing tomorrow’s cures through cutting-edge research. Reading in their history one sees breakthroughs in resources that help us support the health in their neighborhoods and communities. The role of DanaFarber’s Community Benefits office is to support the Institute’s goal to reduce cancer risk among medically underserved populations. In its community outreach programs DanaFarber works with city and state health departments, community partners, and Boston-based coalitions to assess and monitor the needs of local residents with respect to cancer control. In collaboration with staff throughout Dana-Farber, the institute serves as a

DanaFaber is on the front lines of supporting and collaborating on programs designed to eliminate disparities in breast, colon, and prostate cancer; it educates diverse populations about clinical trials; and strengthens support system for medically underserved populations. In short, Dana-Faber is committed to making care and research findings more accessible to everyone within and outside its walls. The institute’s ability to do treatment, research and community outreach incorporating target communities and patient-advocates is worth emulating in Tanzania. Our group had a lot to learn on fundraising activities, how individual philanthropist, community based initiatives and corporate companies are contributing to sustain the Dana-Faber Cancer Institute.

PHEN FATHERS DAY SYMPOSIUM: On Father’s Day June 13th 2013, PHEN’S inaugurated the first “Father’s Day Prostate Health Educational Symposiums” hosted in selected cities through out USA. The symposiums, including breakfast or lunch, was held in partnership with churches within each city and they were free and open to the public. The symposium gave opportunity to all participants to celebrate fathers, the health of all men, and the wellbeing of families. Our group had an opportunity to participate on one of them at Twelfth Baptist Church, 150-160 Warren Street Roxbury, MA 02119. The symposium agenda included nine modules: The Prostate Cancer Crisis in Black America; About the Prostate Cancer; Prostate Cancer Early Detection Screening; A Prostate Cancer Diagnosis; Selecting Treatment;

Recurring Prostate Cancer; Advanced Prostate Cancer; Clinical and The importance of Faith in Healing. Mr. Thomas A. Farrington, PHEN Founder and President in his Father’s Day in his Father’s Day greetings had this to say:

“We begin our recognition and celebration of fathers with educational symposiums aimed at increasing the knowledge that families need in the ongoing fight against prostate cancer. PHEN’s mission is to educate and mobilize Black America in efforts to eliminate our devastating prostate cancer crisis. As the population most impacted by this disease, we must become the most knowledgeable and active. I am eternally thankful to those churches and other organizations that support our mission and have joined with PHEN to host the symposiums and the “5th Annual Father’s day Rally Against Prostate cancer.” In spirit I stand within each of our partner

churches on Father’s Day, joining hands and receiving prayer with every survivor who stands and comes forth. On this day we share and we celebrate. However, we are also reminded of the challenges that we face to eliminate the prostate cancer crisis from our churches and our communities. Happy Father’s Day to all and May God continue to bless our efforts.” The symposium was as eye opener to our group. We increased knowledge about cancer and prostate cancer in particular. We also learnt that occasions like Father’s Day are some of the opportunities we can also bringing together survivors and other target personalities in our communities. Definitely this experience will affect future plans of Tanzania 50 Plus Campaign work.Definitely this experience will affect future plans of Tanzania 50 Plus Campaign work.

Really Smart Phones Samsung Ativ S Taking design cues from the extremely popular Samsung Galaxy S3, the Ativ S offers up a solid Windows Phone experience and is ready to challenge the likes of the Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X. The Ativ S is an intriguing proposition packing a huge 4.8-inch display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, huge 2,300mAh battery and an 8MP rear camera.

The Nokia Lumia 820 The Nokia Lumia 820 carries plenty of unique features and costs less than the Lumia 920, making it a tempting offer for anyone considering making the move to Microsoft’s OS. Nokia is building a solid line-up of smooth, competent Windows handsets that started with the original Lumia line-up last year and continues through to the Windows Phone 8 era.

Google Nexus 4 The latest Google-branded smartphone is made by LG, and it’s a stormer. The Nexus 4’s quad-core 1.5GHz processor runs Android 4.2 incredibly quickly, and its 4.7in 1,280x768 display has a similar pixel density to the iPhone 5’s Retina screen. There’s also a high-quality 8-megapixel camera. This phone has some of the best specs around but it’s not just great value, it’s fantastic value.

Motorola RAZR i The RAZR i has an Intel rather than ARM processor, and it’s seriously quick around the same speed as the iPhone 5 in the Sunspider JavaScript benchmark. It runs Android 4.1 incredibly smoothly, and the operating system looks great on the phone’s 960x540-pixel Super AMOLED screen. The RAZR i has a 4.3in screen, which is big considering how compact the phone is. It’s also incredibly slim, and the rubberized back looks great and makes the phone comfortable to hold. It’s a classy handset all round.
