From Our Publisher Not every one of us has aspirations of starting our own business, but I think we all want to do the best job possible for whatever position we’re in. And most of us are inspired by the success of others. Inside this edition of Success Stories, you’ll discover how local women are making a difference in the business community. From sole proprietors and small business owners to associates with a larger for-profit or not-for-profit organization, these women have a passion for the work they do. Many of these women would acknowledge they made a few mistakes along the way but grew stronger from them. You will notice some of the women have chosen to feature fellow team members. It is a testament to their appreciation of the dedication and commitment of their staff to the overall success of the company. An apropos quote from Dee Hock comes to mind: “An organization, no matter how well designed, is only as good as the people who live and work in it.” Success Stories, produced by On-Line Publishers, Inc., is an extension of BusinessWoman magazine, an award-winning publication online at www.businesswomanpa.com and in print … so you can read it anywhere, anytime. Beginning with as a one-county senior publication in 1995, we are proud to be celebrating our 20th anniversary of bringing quality publications and events to the Susquehanna and Delaware valleys and online. On-Line Publishers, Inc. has come to produce a diverse line of publications and events focused specifically on the needs and interests of women, boomers, seniors, and veterans of all ages. We have gone from one edition of 50plus Senior News to publishing editions online and in print in six counties, as well as BusinessWoman magazine, (((b))) magazine, Caregiver Solutions, and other specialty publications. Through the combined efforts of a competent, creative, and engaged staff, each year we produce six 50plus EXPOs, four women’s expos, and now three Veterans’ Expo & Job Fairs. I know that you will be inspired by the women included in this edition of SuccessStories. Please read their profiles and then give them a call to see how they may be able to help you in your career or even on a personal level through the products or services. Whether you’re just beginning your career or have reached a level of success, I know when you read the stories you will be inspired. Perhaps next year you will consider being included so others may benefit from your experiences.

C&J Catering opened its doors in January 2005 as chefs for hire, exposing a small group of clients to their passion for great food. In early 2006, C&J Catering moved to its first humble location in downtown Mechanicsburg. And while the business has grown, its fundamental philosophy has not changed. Jamie and her staff are committed to providing excellent food and first-rate service while having flexibility in menu planning and execution bwSuccessStories.com

Financial Services Representative

A lifelong resident of Lancaster County, graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School and Millersville University, and 26-year veteran in the financial services industry, Carol Brian is passionate about serving, educating, empowering, and motivating women to achieve financial independence. Considered one of the top financial services representatives with PennWood Financial Group (an office of MetLife), Carol has experienced both hardship and success throughout her life. Her personal experiences have instilled in her the professional calling to help other women pick up the pieces and move forward after financial misfortune. The youngest of six daughters, she was only in second grade when her 43-year-old father died unexpectedly, leaving her mother with a meager $10,000 life insurance policy to pay for funeral expenses and raise her family. Carol’s mother remarried and spent 20 years with her stepfather until he died in a tragic accident. The emotional toll was difficult, but thankfully, her stepfather had protected the family with adequate life insurance coverage. She grew up respecting the value of money as a result of her family’s struggles. She learned firsthand how poor preparation vs. well-thought-out financial planning can make a difference for the survivors following the loss of a loved one. Just two years after her stepfather died, Carol’s mother bwSuccessStories.com

succumbed to ovarian cancer; Carol was executor to the estate. Appalled by the complexity of the process for settling financial affairs, Carol committed herself to serving as an advocate of others as they navigate the maze of paperwork and procedures. Many of the clients she works with have been left financially vulnerable due to circumstances beyond their control—loss of a spouse or loved one, loss of a job, or loss of a marriage. She helps guide them in making decisions that will put them back on track to financial security. Besides her professional commitments, Carol also volunteers her time to the community as a member of the Lancaster Chamber Women in Business Mentor Program Advisory Group and chairs the Ephrata Chamber Women in Business program. In addition, she is past president and currently serves on the membership committee of ABWA’s Lancaster Area Express Network. Carol is also a member of—with Circle of Excellence distinction—Philadelphia Tri-County Women in Insurance & Financial Services (WIFS). On a personal note, Carol enjoys traveling, hiking, biking, amateur photography, and beach combing. She is married to her husband, Alan, and they have one amazing daughter, Allison. “If you do not have your health, you do not have anything in life.”

Stoltzfus’ Wellness & Fitness Products

Kim Hildenbrand-Stoltzfus, Owner/President Sharon Kreider-Beiler, Nutritional consultant

P.O. Box 200 Strasburg, PA 17579 717. 687.6376

“If you do not have your health, you do not have anything in life!” Kim Hildenbrand-Stoltzfus learned these words many years ago from her mother, who was a naturopathic healthcare practitioner and nutritionist for over 40 years. She and Kim have helped thousands of clients all over the country regain their health and lose weight through a proper diet, moderate exercise, and rest. They have always looked for the best organic, alkaline, gluten-free product lines to offer clients in their office and salons. Stoltzfus’ Wellness & Fitness Products has found an allnatural line that reaches to the cellular level, helping to eliminate toxins and breaking up the visceral fat. The system has done more than $3 billion in revenue in the past 12 years, specializing in four different categories: weight loss, energy and performance, healthy aging, and a chemicalfree skincare line. Kim has been using the products for more than 2.5 years now with amazing results. She had fallen down a flight of steps, injuring her neck, rotator cuff, and back. Suffering from excruciating pain and on top of that, a traumatic, unexpected death in the family, Kim went into a full-blown depression, which led to anxiety attacks. A few months after, she was stung by a bee and had a

severe reaction that left her unconscious for 25 minutes until paramedics arrived. She had no pulse! Once they revived her, the doctor at the hospital told Kim she had a traumatic brain injury from lack of oxygen and it could take up to a year to recover. Despite her 29 years of education and experience on nutrition and wellness, Kim had hit rock bottom. She was working 80 hours a week and helping thousands of clients with their health issues, and now Kim was the one who needed the help. It was then that she started on this line of whole-food products, and in a literally few days, Kim could feel a difference in her body. Stoltzfus’ Wellness & Fitness Products has clients who have now lost more than 100 pounds and others losing 10 to 20 pounds in 30 days with the 30-day cleansing and fat-burning system! They offer a 30-day, money-back guarantee as well. Contact Kim for a free phone consultation at 717.687.6376, or email any questions you may have to wellnessindustry@comcast.net. Get more information at www.TheWellnessIndustry.com or www.YoungerSkinIn14Days.com. Kim is pleased to say that she’s feeling fabulous, fit, and fantastic at 50! 7 TIPS

to Improve Your Memory for Names By Carole Kanchier, Ph.D.

D

o you

have difficulty remembering names during interviews? Have you ever forgotten the names of business associates when you had to introduce them? Are you always saying Carol when it’s Crystal? Do you fail to remember names when you’re introduced rapidly to several people? If so, you’re not alone. Forgetting names can be embarrassing to you and insulting to others. It may also impede career advancement. You can learn to remember every name you want or need to recall. Practice the following:

1. Mental set. Before entering a situation where you’ll meet new people, mentally prepare yourself to succeed. Make sure you feel comfortable and presentable with clothes and grooming. This will minimize distractions. Do homework for important meetings. Know background information, such as titles of people who will be in attendance. Focus attention on introductions. Pause between each introduction. If possible, repeat the name, offering information about each person, “Bob is director of marketing for Company X.”

12

SUCCESS STORIES 2015

BusinessWomanPA.com

Also help others remember your name, accenting the name with timing, voice tone, or pitch. If appropriate, repeat your first name. “Hi. I’m Denise Hall, but please call me Denise.” Exchange business cards. Concentrate on the moment. Pay attention for at least eight seconds to the person’s name and face. Don’t try to remember too many names at once.

Remembering names is an appreciated courtesy you can extend to everyone at work and elsewhere.

2. Observe. Look people in the eyes. Form a clear picture of the person in your mind. Note unusual or unique facial characteristics. Identify one extraordinary feature. Observe how this face differs from others. For example, note heavy eyebrows, cleft chin, or defined cheekbones. Exaggerate this feature to embed it in your memory. Using your imagination, mentally reconstruct the person’s face the way cartoonists do to overstate noteworthy features.

3. Get the correct name. If you don’t hear the name correctly, immediately and politely ask for reiteration. Confirm the correct pronunciation. Consider asking the derivative of an unusual name. This confirms interest and offers repetition. Repeat the name to yourself or aloud. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Huang.” When possible, control the length of introductions. For example, ask participants to provide additional information about themselves at meetings you conduct.

4. Associate. Join the sound (name) with a picture (face). Think of a link between the name and the feature you’ve exaggerated. Make the name memorable. Try giving the name a dramatic association. For example, if you’ve met Fred Smith, you could envision Fred Astaire in a blacksmith’s outfit. Also consider color (Joan Black), occupation (Mathew Carpenter), animals (Sylvia Fox), cities (Arnold Houston), or people you know. If you meet someone called Milly, and you have an Aunt Milly, think about how she does

bwSuccessStories.com

or doesn’t look like your aunt. Use amusing or humorous incidents to help. Or, use phonics, a word that sounds like the name you want to remember. For example: Joan, phone; Robert, robber. Senses (see, touch, taste, feel), symbolism, ordering or grouping, and positive images also help.

5. Repeat and review. During conversations, repeat names wherever possible. This involves people more intimately. Also repeat and spell to yourself names of new acquaintances. When leaving, reiterate the names again. Mentally review everyone you’ve met. Where possible, get photographs of the event. Keep a card file, noting the time, place, and date at which you’ve met each new person. Note distinguishing features or distinctive information such as hobbies or career history.

6. Pace yourself. Don’t rush through introductions. Make sure you’ve said at least one personal thing to each person you’ve met. Intend to remember one more name than previously at each new

meeting. For example, if you normally remember five out of 20, intend to remember six next time. Soon, you’ll remember everyone.

7. Practice. Using these memory aids may initially be time-consuming and feel clumsy. Your imagination may seem stiff. But research demonstrates they work. Practice makes perfect. Rehearse the aids with everyone you meet. Enjoy the process. This will enable your creative brain to make imaginative associations. Remembering names is an appreciated courtesy you can extend to everyone at work and elsewhere. When you’ve strengthened your abilities, consider helping others. You’ll gain respect, popularity, and networking skills. This will advance your career. • Dr. Carole Kanchier, registered psychologist, educator, and author of Questers Dare to Change Your Job and Your Life (ISBN 9871936672714), helps individuals and organizations manage change. Tonya McGee has had several role models she can point to that have shaped the businesswoman she is today, starting with her parents and their incredible work ethic. This same work ethic is evident when she is providing comprehensive capital advisory services for her clients to secure financing and/or credit card processing solutions for their businesses. When Tonya was a child, her godmother was named Entrepreneur of the Year in Pittsburgh. The entrepreneurial bug has been with Tonya ever since. As a serial entrepreneur herself, Tonya is able to bring a practical approach to her clients. She is able to speak to them, business owner to

business owner, and provide commonsense advice. Her goal is for each client to know there is a professional by their side who understands what they may be experiencing as a business owner and who can provide guidance and services that work for them. When Tonya met and fell in love with her husband, she knew that he was one of the smartest businessmen she had ever met. She watched, listened, and learned a great deal from him. Tonya hopes to be a conglomerate of the examples set by all of these people to better serve her clients.

Meaningful Meditation Lowering Stress and Calming the Spirit through Stillness By Claire Yezbak Fadden

D

octors and

medical researchers don’t know the exact cause of high blood pressure. Poor diet habits, lack of exercise,

and how we handle the stresses of daily life may contribute to contracting the disease. There are many ways to combat stress— some ways are healthier than others. In addition to prescribing medication, my doctor also recommended that I experiment with meditation. In fact, he prescribed 15 minutes a day of meditation to help alleviate the stresses in my life. bwSuccessStories.com

As I left his office, I wondered where this working mom would find another 15 minutes (in addition to the hour I was supposed to exercise) in my already jampacked day. Surprisingly, fitting in meditation came very naturally. It became a 15-minute hiatus that I deserved, needed, looked forward to, and very much enjoyed. Here are the benefits I‘ve discovered: •

Meditation helped to lower my blood pressure dramatically.

The way I deal with stress in my life is better. I don’t fly off the handle (well, only rarely), and I’m better able to pick my battles. I feel more peaceful within, and as a result, my relationships—with my husband, kids, siblings, friends, and coworkers—have improved.

I’m able to give more without feeling like I’m empty and have no energy left for me.

My creative thinking is sharper, which makes me better at home and on the job.

And, to my real surprise, I have more time than ever to get stuff done. Somehow being more centered helps me to be less fragmented and more productive

What is Meditation? Meditation is a way to use your inner self to connect and harmonize the body, mind, and spirit. “In everyday life, your mind is constantly processing a barrage of sensations, visual impressions, emotions, and thoughts,” says Stephan Bodian, author of Meditation for Dummies. “When you meditate, you narrow your focus, limit the stimuli bombarding your nervous system, and calm your mind in the process,” Bodian says.

Should I Meditate? Why should we strive to attain the inner peace and spiritual wellness that others have found through meditation? Like anything that’s overfull, your mind needs to empty itself of all of life’s distractions on a daily basis. That’s when you can turn your attention inward, focus on stillness, and be part of the moment. The meditation experience is different and always changing for each person who undertakes it. Bodian comments that meditation is a gradual process and you

can’t do it wrong, unless, of course, you don’t do it at all. He stresses that it’s important not to look for results. “You probably won’t notice any flashing lights or sudden jolts of energy,” he adds. “Just trust in the process and let the changes take care of themselves.” How do you improve on your meditating technique? “That’s something you work up to slowly by practicing your meditation and gradually focusing and simplifying until you’re doing less and less while you meditate—and being more and more,” says Bodian.

Get Started It doesn’t take any special skill or years of training to begin meditation sessions. All you need is a will to try, a quiet place, and five to 20 minutes of uninterrupted time. After turning your answering machine on and putting the dog out, find a private area where you won’t be disturbed. Don’t be concerned about meditating perfectly. It’s important to approach each session with a relaxed attitude. It’s not necessary to be perfect. Sit in a position that is comfortable for you. The goal is to quiet the mind. There are several ways to arrive at this goal. Start by breathing deeply. Notice the rhythm of your breath and how your chest rises and falls. Traditionally some meditation techniques use mantras to help relax the body. A mantra is a meaningful word or phrase repeated over and over to aid in reducing stress and increase peace of mind. Some common mantras include “inner peace,” “I am a good person,” or my favorite, “I have all the time I need.” Other individuals use visual stimuli called mandalas for their meditation sessions. You can gaze at a candle, look at an object, or contemplate nature. Mudras—physical gestures—are also

• • • •

Increases energy Lowers blood pressure Calms the spirit Increases self-acceptance and self-esteem

used by a meditating person to help link action with the body and mind. Hands can be folded. A common mudra is sitting with both hands open, facing upward with both hands cupped toward the ceiling. Another popular form of meditation, known as mindfulness meditation, centers on breathing. In this version, the meditator allows her mind to wander, simply focusing on her breathing. Three experiences are possible during meditation, and all three are correct. 1. You may feel bored or restless, and your mind may fill up with thoughts. This is an indication that deep stresses and emotions are being set free. By continuing the meditation, you can help remove these influences. 2. You may fall asleep. If this occurs during meditation, it suggests a need for more rest. 3. You may slip into the gap. When the breath becomes very settled and refined, you may enter the space between thoughts, beyond sound and beyond breath.

Reaping the Benefits Remember that your meditation sessions are a quiet time for you. They are a time to empty out your mind and clear it for the next day’s challenges. Meditation is an opportunity to train yourself to be present in the moment; it’s your trek to a peaceful oasis where relaxation and simplicity can be found. Plan for this time, as you would any other important appointment for your wellbeing. As you become more conscious, your inner light, love, and wisdom will continue to expand. • Freelance writer Claire Yezbak Fadden is a Pennsylvania native. Follow her on Twitter @claireflaire
