2025 VW JETTA GLI
It’s hard to believe that the Volkswagen Jetta is now in its 46th year of production, as the 2025 model is about to roll off the assembly line. With its eighth generation beginning in 2018, the latest Jetta brings with it several changes, but what we might like the most are the things that remain unchanged with the venerable VW.
The new Jetta GLI’s front fascia and grille have been redesigned to give the Jetta a sportier and more defined appearance compared with the somewhat forgettable style of its predecessor. Furthering that burst of personality is the red outline along the bottom of that new grille, which we presume is supposed to mimic the look of a chin spoiler. The combination of new features on the front end makes it feel very Hyundai-inspired. That Korean carmaker influence continues to the revised rear end. A unifying light bar connects The LED taillights across the trunk. The rear valance feels a bit sportier, thanks in part to the more pronounced twin exhaust tips.
Inside, the driver-centric cockpit sees minimal but effective upgrades. Leather seats are complemented by red stitching to offer a slightly sportier feel. The dashboard is now home to an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which operates, among other things, an impressive BeatsAudio stereo system. The driver gets a big 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster as well as a new heated steering wheel. The front seats come with heat and ventilation as standard issue, while the dualzone climate control has transitioned from analog to digital control.
In terms of powertrain, the 2025 Jetta GLI remains unchanged, which we feel is great news. The 2.0-liter turbocharged and intercooled inline-four-cylinder engine offers enough pep to make spirited driving possible, thanks to its 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. But the most exciting carryover is how that power is routed from the engine. A triedand-true six-speed manual transmission (yup, clutch and
all) sends those ponies to the front wheels. We are obligated to inform you that, yes, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is available as a no-cost option.
Tipping the scales at a relatively reasonable 3,537 pounds, the 2025 Jetta GLI can scamper from 0-60 mph in about six seconds and through the quarter mile in the fourteensecond range if you manage to make the most of the electronically-controlled limited-slip differential and reasonably sporty Hankook Kinergy GT all-season rubber. Scrubbing off speed is a set of 13.4-inch vented disc brakes up front and 11.8-inch units in back.
The 2025 GLI comes with Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE safety suite of features, which include blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and rear crosstraffic alert. Although not an EV, the ICE-powered Jetta will keep your bank account relatively safe thanks to its impressive 26/36/30 city/highway/combined mpg rating.
Strangely, the Jetta GLI is only offered by Volkswagen in its single Autobahn trim. On the bright side, this catch-all setup is beneficial for those potential buyers who get overwhelmed by too many if-then option packages that often necessitate prioritizing either comfort or sportiness. The downside is that the Jetta’s base price of $33,940 is as cheap as you can get one of these cars for, and there is no minimalist variant in terms of features or cost.
Though the 2025 Jetta GLI may be well into its eighth generation, this mid-cycle refresh is almost as good as an entirely new car might be. With a plethora of features, respectable fuel economy, and the all-important ability to still choose and row your own gears, the latest Jetta GLI makes it easy to see why this car has been able to stick around for almost a half of a century (and counting).
