PROJECT DESCRIPTION THE MISSISSAUGA PUBLIC LIBRARY PROJECT IS AN ADAPTIVE RE-USE STRATEGY FOR THE MAJOR RENOVATION AND ADDITION TO THE LAKEVIEW, PORT CREDIT, AND LORNE PARK BRANCH LIBRARIES, ALL DATING FROM BETWEEN 1956 AND 1967. THE THREE RENOVATIONS HAVE BEEN STRUCTURED AS ONE PROJECT, A STRATEGY PUT FORTH BY THE CLIENT AS A MEANS TO USE PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE STIMULUS FUNDS IN AN EFFICIENT MANNER. THE RESULTING DESIGN TRANSFORMS THREE TIRED MODERN FACILITIES THROUGH A COMPLETE GUTTING OF THE INTERIORS, A RE-CLADDING AND EXPANSION OF ALL GLAZED AREAS, THE REFURBISHMENT OF EXTERIOR MASONRY AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CANOPY FRAME SYSTEM AND SET OF EXTERIOR TERRACES INTENDED TO CHANGE THE AESTHETIC OF THE BUILDING, ENGAGE WITH THE STREET AND PARK SETTINGS .

THE ORIGINAL THREE LIBRARIES WERE DESIGNED AS MID-CENTURY MODERN BUILDINGS, DISPLAYING SIMILAR PHYSICAL AND AESTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS. AS SUCH, THE DESIGN FOR THE PROJECTS IS BASED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SINGLE VOCABULARY OF CONSISTENT PARTS, APPLIED TO EACH OF THE THREE LIBRARIES IN A VARIED MANNER. THE SOLUTION OFFERS A BALANCE BETWEEN AN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE TO THREE VERY SIMILAR, HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND AN EFFICIENT SOLUTION FOR A FAST PACED SCHEDULE.

COLUMN INFILL

CONTEXT EACH OF THE THREE LIBRARIES ARE SITUATED IN PARK SETTINGS; LAKEVIEW AND LORNE PARK ARE EMBEDDED WITHIN ESTABLISHED 1950’S SUBURBAN NEIGHBOURHOODS AND PORT CREDIT IS SITUATED ADJACENT TO THE CREDIT RIVER ALONG LAKESHORE ROAD, THE COMMERCIAL ‘HIGH’ STREET OF THE OLD TOWN OF PORT CREDIT.

SUSTAINABILITY SUSTAINABLE INITIATIVES INCLUDE : SIGNIFICANT PLANTING OF SHRUBS, FLOWERING GRASSES AND TREES, MAJOR INCREASES IN DAYLIGHTING THROUGH THE USE OF LARGE EXTENTS OF ENERGY EFFICIENT GLAZING, CUSTOM CERAMIC FRIT PATTERNS AND EXTERIOR SOLAR SHADING TO REDUCE SOLAR HEAT GAIN, USE OF LOW VOC MATERIALS, USE OF LOCALLY AVAILABLE MATERIALS WHERE POSSIBLE, USE OF SUSTAINABLE CARPET TILE FLOORING THROUGHOUT, INTRODUCTION OF A LARGE SOUTH FACING READING ATRIA FOR ADDITIONAL DAYLIGHTING, THE USE OF FULLY UPDATED ENERGY EFFICIENT MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, AN ADAPTIVE RE-USE STRATEGY WHICH TRANSFORMS, RATHER THEN DEMOLISHES THREE EXISTING PUBLIC LIBRARY FACILITIES.

THE DESIGN FOR THESE LIBRARIES TRANSFORMS THREE DILAPIDATED PUBLIC FACILITIES INTO WORKS OF VIBRANT, CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE. THIS, IN CONJUNCTION WITH CITY’S PROGRESSIVE SERVICES, HAS INCREASED LIBRARY ATTENDANCE, DRAWING BACK EXISTING CUSTOMERS AND INTRODUCING A NEW GENERATION OF USERS TO THE COMMUNITY LIBRARY.

LEGACY THE MISSISSAUGA PUBLIC LIBRARY ACKNOWLEDGES THE HISTORIC RELEVANCE OF MODERNISM BY UTILIZING AN EFFICIENT AND RESPECTFUL STRATEGY, TRANSFORMING THE FACILITIES BY WAY OF EXPLORING AND ACCENTUATING THE EXISTING MODERNIST CONDITION. THE RESULTING BUILDINGS ASPIRE TO ENGENDER A NEW PUBLIC APPRECIATION FOR MODERNIST PUBLIC BUILDINGS.

CONCEPTUAL VOCABULARY THE ADAPTIVE RE-USE STRATEGY FOR THE PROJECT IS BASED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DESIGN VOCABULARY OF CONSISTENT PARTS WHICH CAN BE APPLIED TO EACH OF THE THREE LIBRARIES IN A VARIED MANNER. THE VOCABULARY IS BASED ON A THREE DIMENSIONAL LAYERING OF COMPONENTS WHICH FIT INTO A FRAME. THE HORIZONTAL MEMBERS OF THE FRAME ARE THE SAME DEPTH AS THE EXISTING FLASHING CAP, APPROXIMATELY 300 MM. THE VERTICAL MEMBERS OF THE FRAME ARE SLENDER 100 MM DIAMETER COLUMNS THE FRAME IS IN FILLED WITH ELEMENTS SUCH AS SOLID CANOPY MATERIAL, SOLAR SHADE DEVICES, COLUMNAR TREES, TALL GRASSES, VERTICAL LED LIGHT FIXTURES, PAVING MATERIAL (WALKWAY / RAMP), AND RECESSED PLANTERS. MPL 01 LAKEVIEW LIBRARY

THE LAKEVIEW LIBRARY IS THE FIRST OF THE THREE BRANCH LIBRARIES WHICH COMPRISE THE GREATER MISSISSAUGA LIBRARY PROJECT. THIS BRANCH IS LOCATED ADJACENT TO SERSON PARK, WITHIN A MID CENTURY SUBURBAN RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY. THE CANOPY SYSTEM COLONNADE ENGAGES WITH THE MAIN ACCESS STREET, ATWATER AVENUE ,TO THE NORTH, PARKING TO THE WEST AND A PARK SETTING TO THE SOUTH AND EAST. LARGE FIELDS OF ENERGY EFFICIENT, DOUBLE GLAZED GLASS ARE USED AS VIRTUAL VOIDS WITHIN THE ENVELOPE. THESE VOIDS HELP TO ACCENTUATE AN ELEVATIONAL RHYTHM OF VERTICAL SOLIDS AND VOIDS WITHIN THE ORIGINAL BUILDING DESIGN. STRUCTURAL GLASS PARTITION WALLS AND LOW SHELVING HELP TO REINFORCE A MATERIAL VOCABULARY OF TRANSPARENCY THROUGHOUT THE FACILITY.

MPL 02 PORT CREDIT LIBRARY

THE PORT CREDIT BRANCH LIBRARY IS LOCATED ALONG LAKESHORE ROAD, THE MAIN COMMERCIAL STREET OF THE OLD TOWN OF PORT CREDIT, NOW A PART OF THE GREATER MISSISSAUGA AREA. THE CANOPY SYSTEM CREATES A COLONNADE WHICH ENGAGES THE MAIN STREET TO THE SOUTH, MEMORIAL PARK TO THE NORTH AND WEST AND A PARKING AREA TO THE EAST. THIS PROJECT INCORPORATES A SMALL ADDITION OF NEW BUILDING AREA ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE FACILITY. THIS NEW AREA CREATES MORE SPACE FOR A BACK OF HOUSE STAFF WORK ROOM. FURTHER TO THIS, THE ADDITION ALLOWS FOR A COMPLETE OPENING UP OF THE EXISTING COLLECTION AREA. A LARGE READING ATRIUM HAS BEEN PLACED AT THE WEST END OF THIS AREA. THE WEST WALL OF THIS SPACE HAS BEEN DEMOLISHED AND REPLACED WITH FLOOR TO CEILING GLASS FROM WHICH TO VIEW THE PARK AND THE CREDIT RIVER BEYOND. 3.
