CASINO RAMA
Luck lives north
One of eight famed restaurants
While Casino Rama boasts a newlyrenovated gaming floor, it’s the impressive line-up of A-list acts at the Entertainment Centre that has Jennifer Grenier excited. The mother of two has planned recent trips to Casino Rama to see classic rock bands and stay at the luxurious all-suite hotel with her husband. “We love live entertainment so the casino is a great way to do that and get away,” she said. “The entertainment feels intimate. I’d rather see a band there than at a larger venue.” The Greniers were able to enjoy a delicious gourmet dinner at one of the eight famed restaurants on site, see more live entertainment and have a few drinks at the new pub-style restaurant, Simcoe Yard House, and gambled a bit before Jennifer pampered herself at the spa the next day. “Everyone is so friendly and accommodating,” she said. Jenna Hunter, director of public relations, agrees and notes that Casino Rama is an entertainment destination.” At Casino Rama, it’s all about the customer. Every customer is valuable to us whether they come because they want to dine, because they want to see shows, spend time at the spa or play on the gaming floor.” 6
The multi-phase, multi-million-dollar renovation project reflects this sentiment. It starts with a canopied central main entrance and continues throughout the 94,220-square-foot gaming floor, offering a dedicated high limit table and slots area, central bar, and wider aisles. The purpose was to upgrade the facility and introduce new customer service features such as an electronic map system of the gaming floor and all-inone kiosks that are ticket redemption centres, bill breakers and ABMs - All the while ensuring that customers still feel as comfortable as ever. “When we were doing the renovations, that’s where our new tag line ‘Luck Lives North’ came in,” said Jenna. We wanted to retain that very welcoming, comfortable northern feel because that’s who we are. We don’t ever want to lose our identity.” For the latest updates and exclusives from behind the scenes, visit www.CasinoRama.com or call toll free 1-800-832-PLAY (7529)

something to
peddle? Hills of Oro-Medonte
Cycle tourism rolls through Ontario’s Lake Country
8
Located in the heart of Oro-Medonte, where tree-canopied roads and rolling hills make up the landscape, and with a close proximity to the famed mountain bike trails at Hardwood Ski and Bike, Doug and Tricia Frost see their share of cyclists at Forks in the Trail Bed & Breakfast.
“We find in the summer time, we get both mountain bikers and road cyclists,” says Doug. “We’re completely surrounded by thousands of acres of County forest so it’s full of trails and mountain bikers use them all the time.” Mountain bike enthusiasts can also look to the trails at Hardwood Hills where thousands are enticed every season. In fact, its Mountain Bike Park, with new challenging courses such as the Boneshaker and the Grunt Climb, that
Guardians of the Forest
will play host to the top male and female riders when they compete at the 2015 Pan Am Games. Oro-Medonte has also played host to the Centurion as well as both national and provincial mountain bike championships. Thousands of acres of trails and hundreds of kilometres of smooth, paved roads are what enticed Gillian Lee and Dave MacLean to the area when they planned their cycling weekend. After a day of mountain biking, they chose to cycle a picturesque, 70-km route through the country roads of Oro-Medonte and along Lake Simcoe on their second day of staying at Forks in the Trail. The route offered both hills and flat riding for the pair who have different levels of experience. Dave has been cycling for 20 years and Gillian has one season on her tires. “It was lovely and surprising. The conditions of the roads were really nice,” said Dave, who added he would recommend the area to other cyclists. “We would definitely come back to road bike and to mountain bike,” added Gillian. “There are a lot of off-the-beaten path mountain bike trails we’d like to try.” Recently, local bed and breakfast operators have started working together to provide B&B tours that complement the tour maps
Cycle Simcoe has created for cyclists. With the Cycle and Stay B&B Tours, they will plan a route for the cyclists, based on what they want, and then transport their luggage to the next B&B they visit. The routes include Oro-Medonte, paved trails through Orillia, as well as Severn and Ramara Townships, and further west along the shores of Georgian Bay. For more information visit www.CycleAndStaySimcoeHuronia.ca. It’s all part of the vision of Cycle Simcoe to create a sustainable plan for cycling in Ontario’s Lake Country and the surrounding areas that is safe, accessible and fun.

A “real Canadian” treasure with taste! Maple syrup – a natural gift
When Tom Shaw is asked how he likes to eat maple syrup, there is not a moment’s hesitation when he answers. “On top of vanilla ice cream and bananas,” he says and then admits, “I probably eat a lot more syrup just sampling it throughout the season.” With his family’s name being synonymous with maple syrup for the 10
last 110 years, Tom has had his share of syrup samplings every spring, when the sap flows in Ontario’s Lake Country. Located on Oro-Medonte Line 14, close to Carthew Bay, Shaw’s Pancake House is open from mid-February to Mid-March and during that time, self-guided and on-demand tours of their sugar bush and maple syrup production are offered.

Thousands of people delight in Shaw’s famous maple syrup and products every year. While Shaw’s 6,000 taps produce about 160,000 litres of sap to create approximately 4,000 litres of maple syrup, there are smaller operations in OroMedonte, Severn and Ramara that also boast the tasty syrup. Trevor Hewitt of Hewitt’s Farm Market & Bakery on Townline Road in Warminster estimates that after 17 years, his two sugar bushes produce an average of 400 litres of syrup each year. Although when the weather cooperates with minus three-to-five degrees overnight and plus three-to-five degrees during the day for several days, his bounty almost doubles. Hewitt’s produces about 25 different maple syrup products, from barbecue sauces to maple butter. Bert and Lori Harrington of The FarmGate on Ramara Road 47 between Brechin and Lagoon City, started producing maple syrup for themselves about six years ago with just 12 trees. Last season, they had 120 taps, which produced 132 litres of syrup.
“Some of our product ended up going to Finland, Australia and California,” says Bert. “We thought it was kind of neat that a Ramara Township product is in different countries.” The large barn-shaped, post-and-beam style building with the evaporator out front garners a lot of attention from passersby. The Harringtons encourage the curious to stop by to see their maple syrup production during the season. Lori’s maple soaps, shaped like maple leaves, have been a big hit and are offered at various museum gift shops in Orillia as well as at The FarmGate, along with bottles of maple syrup. Ontario’s Lake Country is home to both large and small maple syrup producers and some of the best syrup in the world. These producers are highlighted on the Tap into Maple route through the area in March, April and May. Visit www.TapIntoMaple.com to plan your Maple Route.

Orillia Perch Festival – Catch Some Fun There was something about that spot bathed in sunlight on the bank of the canal leading into Lake Simcoe. It wasn’t the quietest – in fact lots of giggling and squeals of excitement could be heard. Those fishing weren’t the most intense with the best and latest fishing gadgets – no, they were a pretty typical family with little kids dressed safely in life jackets clutching their fishing poles. But boy, were they pulling in the perch. And that definitely made the trip from Milton, Ontario to the Orillia Perch Festival very satisfying. “It’s a chance for us to be together and have fun,” said Lisa Straka, whose five-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter were reeling in perch as she spoke. “We’re having a picnic; we’re with our best friends; and it’s a beautiful day. How can you go wrong?” They are just a few of the approximately 4,000 people who cast their lines into Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching during North America’s largest registered fishing derby each year.
12
And there’s good reason, says festival organizer Doug Bunker. With more than 60 tagged perch worth $500 each, plus thousands of dollars in daily, weekly and Grand Prize draws, anyone of any age can walk away with not only great fishing stories, but some cash in their pocket. For this live release event, it’s not the size that matters, as long as the fish are brought in and registered, they are entered to win. He tells of one year where both a three year old and an 87-year-old grandmother caught a $500 tagged fish. “If you can hold a stick, you’re pretty well set,” he laughed, but also noted there are some hard-core anglers out there who enjoy the challenge of bringing in the scrappers. “Perch will fight like the dickens. If you get a little perch on your line, maybe five or six inches, you’ll swear you have a two footer.” The 35th Annual Orillia Perch Festival takes place April 18 – May 9, 2015.

Aaniin/Greetings Aaniin/Greetings, We are the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, a proud progressive First Nation community. Throughout our history, the Chippewas of Rama First Nation have been known as a caring and sharing people. Our Chippewa territory is ‘the gathering place’, where ancient travellers journeyed to seek counsel or medicines, to rest before continuing on, to attend great meetings or witness important agreements. Chippewas of Rama First Nation is an exciting place to live, work and visit. Our community is located 90 minutes north of Toronto, on approximately 2500 acres of interspersed land on the eastern shore of Lake Couchiching. From the earliest of times, our people have been entrepreneurs, artisans, craftspeople, fishers and hunters. We later operated as guides throughout the area for tourists, marketing crafts, produce and services. Today, Rama is part of Ontario’s Lake Country and the blossoming business community in Simcoe North. We are happy to welcome visitors to Rama First Nation. TOURING
Best boating anywhere! When Dave Eastwood retired, he had one thing on his mind that first summer. He wanted to take Crossover, his 24.5-foot mini troller as far as he could along the Trent-Severn Waterway(TSW).

started at the end of June 2014 and finished Labour Day Weekend, on a loop from Trenton to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. But his favourite part of the trip was right here in Ontario’s Lake Country.
He had made an attempt in 2011 and got as far as Parry Sound, travelling the waterway from Trenton, Ontario, across Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching, and through the TSW to Georgian Bay.
“The best part of the trip for me was the marine railway at Big Chute (Lock 44),” he says. “I’ve been on it twice now and it’s very easy. They look after everything for you. They grab your lines and it’s easier than it looks.”
But last summer, retirement offered more time and flexibility and the Ottawa resident took full advantage. From his stay at the beautiful Port of Orillia – a favourite overnight stop for him on Lake Couchiching – he tells of a lengthy and picturesque voyage that
The Big Chute Railway is the only marine railway still in operation in North America and works by cradling boats in slings and moving them along a railway track that lifts them out of the water, over a waterfall, and then places

them gently back in the river on the other side. It is an attraction for boaters and non-boaters, alike. History buffs will also take note of the historical Mnjikaning Fish Weirs, at the Atherley Narrows between Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching. Dating back more than 5,000 years, these wooden fish fences were used by the HuronWendat people to harvest fish and are now protected and have been declared a place of national historical significance.

This area is also home to great fishing and the nearby Port of Orillia, a favourite stop for many. Known as ‘The Jewel of the Trent’, it is just steps away from restaurants and shopping, and offers transient docking with 206 fullyserviced slips, as well as washrooms with showers and change rooms. The Trent-Severn Waterway, a 386-km national historic site, can literally take a
boater anywhere in the world, but for most, the sights, amenities, and large lakes along the route through Ontario’s Lake Country keep them in this area throughout the boating season. Lakes Simcoe, Couchiching and Sparrow are well-known for great fishing and boating, and the TSW is known for its multitude of marinas and restaurants where good food and friendship can always be found.

Jane Dunlop still remembers the soft, sweet donuts of Cornell’s Bakery when she was a young girl. Born and raised in Coldwater, Ontario, Jane fondly remembers the taste, as well as the basket of goodies Art Cornell would leave under the tree for Christmas morning. “Every Christmas Eve he had certain families that he would go to and he would leave a bushel basket of candies and fruit under the Christmas tree while we were sleeping,” she recalls with a smile. “I think

There is no doubt Coldwater is one of the most welcoming communities you will find, with beautiful flower arrangements throughout the streets and friendly people greeting you as you walk along the sidewalks. A centre for manufacturing in the early 20th Century, the idyllic village that

The Music Barn Amphitheatre doubles as a stage for outdoor performances, as well as the Coldwater Farmers’ Market, July through September, which draws hundreds to the area each Saturday morning.

Steampunk Festival
Coldwater Steampunk Festival by Judy McLaughlin
Coldwater is known for its fun and fascinating events, such as the Witches Walk, Steampunk - All Things Victorian Festival, the Mad Hatter Tea, Candlelight Walk, rubber duck races, parades and fairs that attract people from all over. Even without a special event taking place, visitors may come across impromptu jewellery making on the sidewalk – a favourite for kids – or relish an ice cream cone while enjoying the view of the famed river flowing by. At the end of summer, many drop a fishing line in the river and take advantage of a time when the salmon are running. Although things like ship building and carriage manufacturing are industries of the past, the unique shops, restaurants and landmarks, as well as the friendly atmosphere, draw in visitors from all over, making Coldwater a hub of activity on any given day. ARTS
The Shilling’s
A family that connects through art
Rama artist experiences his paintings Beyond the flash of Casino Rama, there are many pockets of tranquility within Rama First Nation. Travis Shilling knows these nooks well, as this is where he grew up, where he watched his famous father paint and was surrounded by his art books, art supplies, his music and his influence. The youngest son of Arthur Shilling, the highly acclaimed Aboriginal artist, Travis says he never felt pressure to follow in his footsteps. “It was more inspiration,” he says, recounting a time when he was 15 and he went up to his father’s studio. In front of him lay his paints and unused canvases, and he decided to try. “It was a way to relate to him because I didn’t really know him,” explains Travis, who lost his father in 1986, when he was seven. He shares his artistic passion and talent with his older brother, Bewabon, who is an accomplished portrait painter and has also been working on an abstract series for five years called The Black River Series. 42
Travis sold his first painting when he was 16 and has sold many, many more through his exhibitions over the last 15 years, including his recent solo exhibit at the Ingram Gallery. Although he is known for his conceptual art, his portraits have also earned him high praise. He recently moved back to Rama from Toronto. In Rama, he creates through the late hours of the night, in the same studio as his father, listening to much of the same music. His pieces are deeply personal and reflect struggle and survival. It’s not really about painting as it is about experiencing, he notes. “Everything I do now is for me. It’s important. It’s about the painting ritual. It doesn’t matter anymore what it turns out to be. I just have to make the piece and walk away.” For this same reason, he admits it’s difficult to let go. In the Orillia area, Travis has contributed his work to local art shows such as Starry Night and Streets Alive. For more information on Arts & Culture see page 48

CAMPING
There’s nothing like swinging through the air and letting go into the cool water of Lake Simcoe on a hot day. Fourteen-year-old Ethan Witjes has been coming to Point of Mara Resort & Trailer Park all his life. His mom, Heather Witjes chuckles as she recalls the hours that Ethan and his friends spend swimming in the clean, cool water. For her, camping provides an opportunity for family to come together over campfires, picnics and barbecues. She says she loves the intimate atmosphere and the fact that Point of Mara is family operated. While Christine Kaiser-Reid’s family has been providing a personal touch since the early 70s when her parents purchased the park, she and her husband Doug Reid have taken the 18-acre resort to the next level building it to 75 seasonal trailer sites and 20 transient sites accompanied by six motel suites and a three-bedroom cottage – all complemented by a marina, cozy outdoor furniture throughout and organized activities for all ages.
Nearby McRae Point Provincial Park and Mara Provincial Park, are also on the shores of Lake Simcoe in Ramara, and offer nature trails, playgrounds, boat launches, beaches and the best swimming. McRae Point Provincial Park boasts 203 campsites while at Mara Provincial Park, you will find 105 camping sites. Both offer comfort stations with showers, flush toilets and barrierfree washrooms. Many will tell you that Ramara boasts the best sunsets over Lake Simcoe and it’s part of what draws people from all over the world to camp here. “We have people who come from everywhere in North America,” says Christine. “We have tourists from (Europe) who come with their rented motorhomes. They just love it here.” And, not far away, Bass Lake Provincial Park on the other side of Orillia offers hiking and cross-country ski trails as well as 182 campsites. From private to provincial campgrounds, there is lots of choice in Ontario’s Lake Country for family camping fun! For more information on Camping see page 51
