Get Glowing this Winter! There are so many things to love about WINTER. From matching beanies and scarves, to hot chocolates with marshmallows, it’s the perfect season for curling up with a good book and forgetting about the outside world. But as the temperatures drop and the layers go on, there is one thing everyone needs to remember: skin care! We sat down with Australian Skin Clinic’s National Training Manager, Darlene O’Gara, to uncover the treatments that will keep your skin happy and healthy this winter. CONCERN: VISIBLE CAPILLARIES There’s nothing better than coming in from the cold and jumping into a long, hot shower. Unfortunately, this winter warmer can wreak havoc on your skin. Sudden changes in temperature can cause the capillaries in the face to contract and expand rapidly, leading to broken veins and skin redness. Darlene says the most commonly affected areas are the nose, forehead and cheeks. “Laser for general redness and laser for facial veins are two popular treatments that can effectively reduce the appearance of visible blood vessels, capillaries and general redness,” Ms O’Gara said. “For the treatment of general redness you will generally need six treatments at two-weekly intervals. For the treatment of facial veins, the recommendation is usually one to three treatments at six weekly intervals. Speak to your laser technician who will advise a treatment plan according to your skin type.” CONCERN: DRY, FLAKY SKIN The dry air and low humidity of winter can strip the skin of its natural layer of protective oil, leading to flakey, dry and dull-looking skin. Add central heating on top of that, and you’re in for a skin disaster! While it might not seem as important during the cooler months, drinking enough water is the first step in the fight against dry skin. Not only does water keep your body functioning optimally, it also provides the skin with the hydration it needs to stay soft and supple. Another great way to combat the dehydrating effects of winter weather is with an active moisturiser such as the Balense ReBalense Moisturiser for dry skin. Combined with antioxidants, natural moisturising factors and a sophisticated water delivery system, the Balense ReBalense Moisturiser for dry skin helps skin stay silky smooth and is available at Australian Skin Clinics across Australia. CONCERN: STRETCH MARKS Stretch marks are every woman’s worst nightmare, however, they are a natural occurrence. Winter is the perfect time to prep for that summer body by reducing the visibility of stretch marks. “Australian Skin Clinics’ Fractional RF and dermal stamping can reduce the appearance of skin concerns such as stretch marks and loose skin. The Fractional RF treatment stimulates and re-energizes the skin promoting a reduction of scarring,” Ms O’Gara said. “Prior to receiving Fractional RF, stay out of the sun for a minimum of two weeks, luckily winter makes that easy! We recommend having three to six treatments every two weeks to prepare your winter body for summer.” Following the treatment, stay out of the sun for another 48 hours, and always follow the advice of your clinic professional. Always seek professional advice before adding new products or treatments to your skin care regime. For more winter treatment tips, contact Australian Skin Clinics on 1300 303 014 or visit www.ozskin.com

MACKIE CELEBRANT GOOD TIMES

Your day is exactly that – YOUR day!

Come On!

I have been a wedding singer for 20 years, so have seen literally hundreds of weddings – the good, the not so good, and the ‘Oh my gosh, the celebrant said the names wrong!’ Now I’m out the front, conducting ceremonies that are fun, original, romantic, and in the words of Kylie and Jason –especially for you. With a love for love, in addition to all the legals and standard expectations, as your celebrant I make these vows to you. I promise to - be just as excited about your wedding as you are - hold your tear stained tissues for you if you’ve cried mid-ceremony - not wear any parachute fabric twinsets (unless that’s what you want!) - prepare everything about your ceremony down to the finest details, but to also roll with whatever happens in the moment on the day COME ON - LETS TALK! 0401 819 734 | hello@katemackiecelebrant.com.au www.katemackiecelebrant.com.au www.facebook.com/katemackiecelebrant

Amy & Hughan port douglas, far north qld 9.09.17

O N TREND B R I DA L O N L I N E - SU M M E R / AU T U M N 2 018

Amy Parker met Hughan Seary at a friend’s birthday party at The Gap in Brisbane, where they now live. Amy was new to Brisbane, having just moved from Victoria and Hughan had lived in The Gap most of his life. Amy’s sister was living in Brisbane at the time and had met Hughan through a mutual friend: “We were introduced and spent the whole night chatting away, basically inseparable from the get go!” Amy describes Hughan’s romantic proposal: “It was our five-year anniversary and Hughan, knowing I am a hopeless romantic, had as usual planned some surprise celebrations. It started with a single red rose and then a picnic in the park on dusk. He had packed our favourite foods and hidden the ring box in one of the containers. He encouraged me to open the Tupperware (another love of mine) and when I realised what it was, kneeling in front of me, he asked me to be his forever. We celebrated with dinner and drinks on the river at Watt, New Farm and a night at The Stamford Plaza, another beautiful Brisbane icon close to our hearts.” Hughan is a talented web designer and created a beautiful wedding website for their guests to enjoy: “It included Our Story, an Events page, a countdown timer, a Travel and Accommodation page, information on the location and fun things to do in the Far North Queensland area as we encouraged our guests to make a holiday of our wedding weekend. It also included lots of photos of us from our years together to help tell our love story. The best thing about the website was that all the information was there in one place for our guests. If anyone had any questions, they could easily contact us through the site. It was also environmentally friendly and really cost-effective (didn’t cost a thing!). Feel free to check it out it out www.teamseary.com)” The ceremony was held at The ReNewell House at stunning Newell Beach in Far North Queensland. ReNewell is located on absolute beachfront and boasts views of the Coral Sea. “Keeping with the very relaxed and laid-back style of our wedding, we also held our reception at The Renewell House. This meant our guests didn’t need to worry about a thing, it was all right there for them.” “Our good friend and extremely-talented photographer, AJ Moller, photographed our day. Another good friend and extremely-talented photographer, Sam Scoufos, filmed the day for us.” Amy’s dress was a stunning two-piece, custom Fiorenza gown: “The incredibly talented and beautiful designer, Pina Fiorenza, brought my vision to life and created the dream dress I didn’t even know I wanted! It was a lace play-suit with a double-layered tulle skirt. I described the style of our wedding to Pina, stating it was going to be fun and relaxed. I told Pina above everything I wanted to be comfortable and be able to party!”

Shae Howlett of Tropical Beauty by Shae did Amy’s make up as well as her two sisters, Mum, sister-in-law and three best friends. “I loved my wedding make up and was extremely happy with Shae - she was so lovely and easy going. She worked really efficiently and everyone looked stunning. Not knowing the area or having anyone to recommend anything, I found her on Instagram.” “Hughan wore a crisp white shirt under a light-coloured blazer - both Calibre, with navy blue slacks and belt - both Saba. He finished off his look with a blue bow tie and navy blue Doucal’s loafers. I had no idea what he was planning to wear on the day and we loved surprising each other. Hughan has impeccable taste and always looks gorgeous, so I knew I was in for a treat. He certainly didn’t disappoint, looking amazingly handsome as per usual.” Amy decided not to have flowers and chose to carry balloons instead. She carried six helium balloons - two Tiffany blue, two rose gold and two rose gold confetti. “They were bright and fun and made everyone smile. Teigan at Balloons etc. in Cairns was amazing! She was so helpful and efficient knowing exactly what I wanted straight away and just making it happen without any fuss or stress. We also had 90cm confetti balloons around the venue as decorations and our niece and nephew carried rose gold love heart balloons, which gave then fun for days after the wedding.” “We had individual brownies from I Heart Brownies in Brisbane, for our wedding dessert. Our guests each got their own brownie in a cute brown box with the signature red love heart. Lulu was amazing, agreeing to let us send them up to Port Douglas with a relative who was driving up to our wedding. We had one mishap with ice water leaking into a brownie box and Lulu came to the rescue, providing us with a new box at the last minute before we flew out!” Amy and Hughan themed the event themselves, with festoon lights and flame-less tea light candles in glass jars and white paper lanterns scattered around the house and garden. They hired white chairs, a ‘Best Day Ever’ sign (which they were married under) and white dry bar tables with stools from Port Douglas Catering and Events who also catered the event. They also hired massive individual letters that spelled ‘LOVE’ and lit up at night, which was a major feature and became the photo booth background! “We prepared our own music using iTunes. Our close friend, Dave, was our DJ for the night, putting together some playlists with all our favourite party tunes and just letting them roll.”

ONTREN D B R I DA L O N L I N E - SU M M E R / AU T U M N 2 018

Amy’s Highlight: “Seeing my beautiful husband for the first time at our ceremony and nailing a totally off the cuff speech that left the whole room in tears!” Hughan’s Highlight: “Seeing his beautiful bride and locking eyes with her for the first time, marrying the love of his life... and the pork tacos!”

“We chose to dance to ‘Mirrors’ by Justin Timberlake. This was totally unplanned as we didn’t intend to do a ‘first dance’. This song was on our list of love songs to play before our ceremony. I (Amy) was ready to dance but the dance floor was empty and we wondered why no one had started dancing yet! We quickly realised that our guests were being very polite, expecting us to dance first, giving them permission to follow. The song came on and I looked at Hughan realising it was also the perfect moment to whip off the tulle skirt and reveal the party play suit! It was perfect timing but all totally off the cuff! Once the song was over the dance floor was open and no one stopped dancing for the rest of the night!” “Our guests all stayed in Port Douglas and were transported by bus to Newell Beach to the wedding party house. I got ready in Port Douglas and travelled with my family to the wedding in a hire car, my brother doing the honours of driving me and walking me down the aisle together with my three-year-old nephew, Oliver.” “We stayed in Port Douglas and Palm Cove for the week following our wedding with our families and then travelled overseas, spending a week each in New York City, Paris and Phuket. We had been to NYC and Paris separately but never together and loved these places, always saying that we would go together some day. Thailand was a beautiful place to finish off relaxing by the beach and drinking cocktails! We took six weeks off work altogether and loved every second together, only wishing we could have more time!” “Our newlywed advice... remember why you are marrying each other and don’t let anyone else come between that. We maintained that as long as we were both there on the day - nothing else mattered. Also remember effort vs impact. Don’t spend a whole heap of time or money on things that you and your guests won’t care about or notice, unless of course they are special to the two of you.” Amy and Hughan chose not to have a bridal party: “We wanted all of our guests to feel special and included and we wanted our ceremony and photos to be intimately ours.” Amy’s sister, Emma, did her hair: “Over the years, whenever we went out, Emma would always do everyone’s hair. She has always been so good at it! I just wanted a simple, low bun and it was a beautiful way for her to help me get ready on the day. I absolutely loved my wedding hair.”

Felicity McShane of Fusion Elements is a qualified, Authorised Marriage Celebrant. Creating powerful, respectful and unique ceremonies, offering tailored packages to suit your life celebrations: D Weddings D Vow Renewals D Commitment Ceremonies D Naming Days D Funerals Fusion Elements represents Life Celebrations... an entwining of the past, the present and the future. Moments in time that have lead you to each other, moments to be cherished and celebrated while creating memories for your future. WE ASKED FELICITY McSHANE CMC,JP (Qual.) FOR HER TOP 10 TIPS FOR A BESPOKE WEDDING CEREMONY Before engaging the services of an Authorised Celebrant, it is always good to have conducted some research on what this person has to do for you, and how they can help you plan your perfect ceremony. Your Celebrant creates an atmosphere at your ceremony so that all of your guests can relate to your personal relationship journey together. It’s a time for celebration. It’s also a time for your married life to begin. It’s exciting and when you are finally announced ‘Mr & Mrs’, that feeling is only enhanced by the fact that your chosen Authorised Celebrant has just made it legal! Yes, that’s right, you are now legally married.

1. CHOOSE A CELEBRANT ON PERSONALITY AND PROFESSIONALISM... NOT BUDGET Choosing the right Celebrant to perform what will be one of the biggest and most special moments in your life is an investment. I am often asked “How much do I charge?” as the first question, without the couples really understanding the work that goes into a ceremony. On average, we spend 10-15 hours per ceremony, meeting with the couples, sending out emails to make sure we have the correct information, ensuring that if something legal comes up, it is dealt with correctly, filling out paperwork, researching topics of discussion, liaising with wedding vendors working on the same wedding and writing, and rewriting, and rewriting until we have a ceremony worth presenting, rehearsing and conducting. It’s important to take note that an Authorised Celebrant is running a small business. They must be fully registered with the Attorney General, attend Ongoing Professional Development days to keep up to date with any changes in the Marriage Act, abide by a code of practice, provide resources and a PA system, be fully insured for Public and Indemnity Insurance, provide transport and the general everyday running costs associated with their business such as communications, marketing, resources and memberships. Choosing the right Authorised Celebrant is an investment. This is the person who ensures your wedding meets all the legal requirements and validates your marriage. Your Authorised Celebrant ensures your ceremony is conducted professionally and with the utmost respect given to the responsibilities of marriage. It is always a good idea to speak with a few different Authorised Celebrants to gain an understanding of what you are looking for. Ask yourself: Are they friendly? Am I getting the correct information? Are they professional? Are they qualified? Are they registered with the Attorney General? Are they fully insured and, most importantly, are they willing to work with you to achieve your dream wedding? Ensure when planning your budget for your wedding that you are prepared to invest a little bit extra for something that can leave a lasting impression on your marriage. 2. HAVE IDEAS THAT YOU WANT TO INCORPORATE INTO YOUR CEREMONY It’s important to have an idea of how long you would like your ceremony to be? What rituals, if any, you would like to incorporate? Do you want to include people who are not already in the bridal party? There are so many different ideas that can be included and it really does come down to personal preference. From traditional, cultural, spiritual, religious and family, come many symbolic gestures that may have special or different meanings to be celebrated. We live in a multi-cultural society and couples like to acknowledge traditions from their own heritage. This helps the couple to retain their own connection with their traditions/culture. Whatever the ritual, it gives the congregation a sense of belonging and specialness in the eyes of the couple and can be seen to strengthen the bond between the couple. As a Celebrant, being open to suggestion and being able to perform any type of cultural/tradition ritual is a given. If we are not certain how to perform it, then we research it, practice it and learn it. A ritual can create a powerful moment between the couple involved and evoke a sense of deepened love not felt before towards one another. It is a privilege and honour to be asked to be a part of that and make it all happen.

ONTREN D B R I DA L O N L I N E - SU M M E R / AU T U M N 2 018

3. ORIGINALITY IS THE KEY TO THE SUCCESSFUL DELIVERY OF YOUR CEREMONY The more information about yourselves you can give your Celebrant the better. I believe in creating powerful, respectful and unique ceremonies that are tailored to your individual needs, fusing those elements of love that are true to your dreams of your special day. Keep it real. Keep it simple and the elegance will flow. We can only write your story with the information we are given. There is nothing worse than going to a wedding and not being able to relate to what the Celebrant is saying. During your sessions, make sure your Celebrant has your story correct. It’s about all of those moments in time that have lead you to each other, moments to be cherished and celebrated... and creating memories for your future. Celebrants won’t always use all of the information you give them, however, they will be looking at how you interact with each other, your body language towards each other, how you speak in conversation with each other. This gives the Celebrant a well-rounded view on who you are in your relationship. 4. BE IN THE MOMENT ON THE DAY AND LET YOUR VENDORS DO THE STRESSING FOR YOU The stage is set and its show time! By now, all of the planning is done, the things that could go wrong have come and gone and on the day, what will be, will be. It won’t matter now if the cake doesn’t look right, if the sashes on the chair are the wrong shade of purple or if the flowers aren’t exactly how you imagined. You’re about to walk down the aisle and pledge your love to your best friend for the rest of your life. So just enjoy the moment. Feel amazing, eat loads of food and drink loads of water during the preparation phase so you have energy to entertain your guests. No-one else will know about the things that won’t go to plan anyway. They are all there to support your marriage and celebrate in the moment with you. Only you will know the difference and it no longer matters. Your vendors will all be busy making sure you can enjoy yourself with your guests and relax. It is up to them now to make sure everything is sorted for you. 5. ALWAYS HAVE A WET WEATHER BACK UP PLAN AND BUDGET FOR IT You can’t predict when Mother Nature will strike and when picking a date, the most important item for planning your ceremony venue option is to consider budgeting for a wet weather plan! Whether you are having a garden ceremony, beach ceremony or a backyard ceremony, it is always a good idea to consider an undercover area for those times when the heavens open up and it doesn’t stop raining for a few days. Your day won’t be ruined by the wet weather. A different plan of attack is put in place. Allocate someone to be able to contact all of your guests as to the new arrangements. Make sure you let all your vendors know in advance what you have decided. There is nothing worse than showing up to a ceremony area and not having half of your vendors there!

6. ASK YOUR CELEBRANT FOR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS Celebrants are unique in that they get to work with so many wonderful industry professionals including venues, photographers, musicians and DJs, stylists, planners, hair and makeup artists, florists, cake decorators and more. If you are having trouble narrowing down your own search, just ask the Celebrant if they have any feedback on the vendors you are considering. 7. DISCUSS YOUR VISION FOR THE FULL DAY WITH YOUR CELEBRANT Your Celebrant is in the best position to make any announcements to advise your guests what will happen once the ceremony has concluded... so in the planning stage of the ceremony, you will need to discuss things such as any special instructions regarding the area, fire exits, group and family photo positions, what time the canapÊs and drinks will start and where, etc. Announcements ensure there is no confusion among your guests and most importantly, they won’t have to worry the Bride and Groom with these details. 8. BE REALISTIC IN YOUR EXPECTATIONS The last thing any vendor wants to hear is that the Bride and Groom did not enjoy their day because something happened and nothing was said or done about it. It is really important to communicate all of your plans for your day with your vendors. As professionals, we can all offer support and guidance on different situations and it is up to you to communicate specifically what it is you want and can work with. Sometimes working from a run sheet can help with timing, lists for photography options, music, ceremony start time, transport... everything has to run like clockwork in order to maintain a smooth transition into your evening and meal time. All of your vendors will work with one another to ensure we meet the standards for what you have planned as your vision for your special day. 9. LET YOUR CELEBRANT KNOW ABOUT ANY CONCERNS YOU MAY HAVE WITH GUESTS Sometimes in life, families and friends come together and may not necessarily co-exist in harmony! This can add to the stress of making sure your day will be everything you have dreamed. Whether there are blended family situations or not, it is an everyday reality. So how do you deal with it? You will find that because they are attending a wedding, they will be on their best behaviour. This is called wedding etiquette. Sometimes, out of respect for both the Bride and Groom, a third person is allocated the task to facilitate the seating arrangements and make sure that people are separated during the ceremony and reception. It is usually a family member, however, it has been known that on occasion the Celebrant is allocated this for the ceremony duration and then the venue wedding coordinator will take over. It is very rare for anyone to have to step in but it can be done when necessary to ease the minds of the couple involved.

ONTREN D B R I DA L O N L I N E - SU M M E R / AU T U M N 2 018

10. PUBLICLY THANK YOUR VENDORS - A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY Your day has come and gone. Your expectations were exceeded and now you have an opportunity to let the world know just how much your special day meant to you and how your vendors helped create it. Show your appreciation for your vendors by leaving them a testimonial and review that can be shared with future Brides and Grooms. There are so many public sites that offer a rating system. This does have an impact on their business and your testimonial could be the key to ensure that not only are you promoting them because they were amazing, but they could be amazing for new clients as well. Vendors love hearing feedback to make sure they are on the right track when it comes to their work. It’s important to receive the feedback as this helps us to identify our strengths and weaknesses in the world of weddings. You may even find yourself in a new situation at the end of all of the planning with some of your vendors and become lifelong friends.

Your ceremony should have the necessary legal components, it should be professionally presented, well organised, modern, romantic, happy, relaxed and although serious - it should be a fun and enjoyable occasion. Many years in the hospitality industry has moulded me into a person who is comfortable and relaxed in the presence of many, able to communicate with confidence and guide you through your ceremony with the greatest of ease. This is a rewarding vocation for me, to see the love, feel the emotion and fulfil your dreams, as I pronounce you husband and wife.

When it comes to

Wedding Skin Care And

Beauty Prep

there’s no such thing as starting too soon! Don’t leave it until the ‘Last Minute’ to think about your skin – the longer you have to correct any skin issues, the better! Follow this Wedding Beauty Countdown from the fabulous team at BEAU AESTHETICS to prepare your skin for your big day...

MONTHS BEFORE: Go for a Consultation By scheduling an appointment with the Doctor early, this allows you to find out more on what we have to offer without committing to any service. Don’t be shy about asking questions – this consultation allows us to work with you to design a personalised program... based on your budget and needs.

MONTHS BEFORE: First Treatment Depending on your areas of concern, a series of treatments are usually required to achieve ideal results. Here are some of our most popular pre-wedding treatments: - Anti-Wrinkle Injections (minimum one month prior) - Dermal Fillers Injectables (minimum two months prior) - Chemical Skin Peel (minimum three months prior – a series of 4-6 for tnightly treatments) - Emerge Fractional Skin Resurfacing Laser (minimum four months prior - a series of 4-6 treatments, every 3-4 weeks) - Pellevé Radiofrequency Wrinkle Reduction (minimum four months prior - series of 4-6 treatments, every 3-4 weeks) - Sculpsure Body Contouring (minimum five months prior – series of 3 treatment/area required at 6, 12 and 18 week intervals).

MONTHS BEFORE: Practice Good Skin Care Maintenance Wearing broad spectrum sunscreen with good SPF coverage and having a skincare regime from our Physician’s Only IMAGEMD Range will help maintain results of your in-office treatments and boost your Pre-Wedding Glow!

BRISB ANE BRIDE BRIDAL BEAUTY

MONTHS BEFORE: Make time for a Complexion Check-In Book in with us so we can see how your skin is responding to the treatments and products. At this point, there is still time to ‘tweak’ your regimen and in-office treatment so we can achieve the best results by your wedding day.

MONTH BEFORE: Brighten up Your Smile To ensure your smile is camera-ready, we recommend booking a professional clean and in-chair Zoom whitening procedure with our par tners at Total Care Dental Studio for Instant Whiter Teeth (+Add on Package Deals Available).

WEEK BEFORE: Time to slot in one last skin peel Our Signature Facelift Peel is gentle yet effective, with no downtime involved. Alternatively, you can slot in one last Pellevé Treatment for instant tighter and glowing skin. (Note: Immediate plumping of skin aka ‘Cinderella Effect’ is best achieved when done 2-4 days prior to any special occasion).

THE DAY OF THE WEDDING: It’s time to Relax, Enjoy & Savour Every Second. Happy Planning!

ADRIANA STORNO & ANDREW PANELLA 20.08.16

Ceremony: St Mary’s Star of the Sea, West Melbourne Reception: Stones of the Yarra Valley Photographer: Darin Collison Bridal Dress: Leah Da Gloria “The most important thing to me when I chose my gown was how I connected with the designer. I had a vision in mind, but it was up to the designer to lead me on the journey. Leah was laid back in her approach and not OTT, and that was super important to me. My dress was different, I hadn’t seen anything like it and I was so happy with the outcome.” Hair & Makeup: Cassandra Lusi & Rokk Ebony HOW DID YOU MEET? “Andrew and I met through mutual friends, while we were both on Christmas Holidays, on the beach in the Mornington Peninsula.” TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL “During a weekend away at my parent’s holiday house at Lorne, and after a very long and beautiful day of sightseeing down the Great Ocean Road, Andrew proposed at one of our favourites places in Lorne at Teddy’s Lookout.” DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING DAY STYLE “Laid-back and glamorous. A winter styled winery was perfect for this and Stones of the Yarra Valley nailed that brief. Our hanging chandelier of florals with tea light candles, along with hanging fairy lights, really set the mood. There was an open fire pit outside the back doors overlooking the vineyard, it was perfect! WOULD YOU CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR DAY? “I can honestly say I wouldn’t change anything. Nothing is perfect but to us, our wedding day was stunning and most importantly, it was a huge celebration with friends and family, filled with love, laughter and of course, great food and wine.”

BRIDE’S HIGHLIGHT “Fireworks, of course! I’m a sucker for those big, bright sparkles in the sky, and Andrew knows this. Part way through Andrew’s speech, he surprised me and our guests with a show of amazing fireworks over the vineyard. It was magical.” NEWLYWED ADVICE “Be organised – there is no fun in last-minute stress sessions. In the last 6 months, set your TO DO list and arrange it in priority. The highest priority items, set to action 6 months prior, and work the list backwards so that you have certain things to action every month. Plan to have a blank TO DO list 2 weeks prior, because things will pop up!”

COURTNEY + CURTIS tropical glamour wedding PALM COVE, FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND 23 JUNE 2017

e

Courtney Margaret Constance Barker and Curtis Stuart Browning met at a mutual friend’s 21st birthday party at Southbank Surf Club in Brisbane. “It was certainly a night to remember!” On the day of the proposal, Curtis recalls: “I was so nervous all day! We were in Port Douglas for a long weekend. I had organised for a helicopter to take us to a private sand clay out on the reef with a picnic and champagne. Of course, the weather was not our friend that weekend! The evening before, I received a phone call from the helicopter company saying that it wasn’t looking promising but they would leave it until morning to make the call. Morning came, and I received the call that it was off! I had a reservation at a nice restaurant that night but wanted to propose before dinner. Courtney and I jumped online to look at the weather map and there was nothing over Cape Tribulation, so I put the ring in my bag and we drove up chasing the sunshine. We arrived and after ten minutes, it started to pour and Courtney wasn’t happy... onto Plan C! I thought I’d have to do it at the restaurant. We got back to the hotel and it cleared up. I suggested a walk on the beach and finally dropped to my knee…” Courtney recalls: “We were in Port Douglas because Curtis had a few days off training. It was unseasonably wet, and certainly not the postcard photo view I had in mind. It was miserable, but we made the most of the time we had off. I had no idea until Curtis had to go ‘make phone calls’ to his manager about his upcoming footy contract. I was a little suspicious, considering he would always make calls in front of me. I now know he was trying to organise some extravagant helicopter ride to an island to propose, but the torrential rain prevented his perfect plan. So, he had a backup plan, and for a split moment the sun came out and he hurried us down to the beach. I was even more suspicious when he decided to put on a button-up shirt to go for a walk and he kept walking like a crab! (So I couldn’t see the ring box in his back pocket). After I finished being precious about where we were going to sit, because there were so many sand flies and bug things around, he pulled me up and got down on one knee. Apparently, I didn’t say ‘yes’ for a while…. had to keep him guessing - right - no, I was just in shock, even though I had a hunch.” So many people helped to create the perfect wedding for Courtney and Curtis. Renae McKenzie from Venecia Designs: “She was great. Because we were living in France, we did everything via email. She nailed the invites and stationery.”

ONTREN D B R I DA L O N L I N E - SU M M E R / AU T U M N 2 018

“The ceremony was performed by ‘our amazing’ celebrant, Darlene Woodward, at the Alamanda Chapel in Palm Cove (South Pacific Bridal). The staff there are wonderful - Sherie was very helpful and made me feel extra special on the day. Everything was timed perfectly.” NuNu Restaurant in Palm Cove was the venue for the reception: “It is only 10 metres from the chapel, and was very convenient for our guests to wander over after the ceremony with their freshly-opened drinking coconuts. ‘Got to make sure the guests are hydrated before the Champagne!’ And Claire... what can we say - she was the best onsite wedding planner we could ask for. Any request was accepted and executed beautifully.” “Yumi from South Pacific Bridal took the most amazing photos and that’s why we had to have her!” Courtney designed her dress together with her ridiculously amazing mum, Tracey. Tracey sewed, stitched and finished the dress by hand. She even personalised an embroidery patch with the wedding date and a love heart, which she stitched on the inside of the dress, close to Courtney’s heart. The bridesmaids’ dresses were also made by Courtney’s mum: “I was pretty easy about what the girls wore. I wanted them all to be comfortable and wear something that suited each of them. They all looked incredibly beautiful and my mum surely outdid herself with these creations. As well as these dresses, mum also made her own dress and the flowergirl dresses for my daughter, Penelope and niece, Sierra. I think all up, she made nine dresses (including my costume changes) and that’s not counting the dresses for the hen’s party, my daughter’s christening the week before and all the other dresses my sisters and I needed for our week in Palm Cove.”

“Our hair and makeup was done by Rachel Gregory – miracle worker! Mum even said: ‘Oh gosh Rachel, people are going to think I’ve had work done!’ Rachel made me feel fabulous. My baby was six months at the time of the wedding and I was still waking up twice a night to feed, so you can imagine how tired I looked. Rachel made me glow and I felt like I was glowing too. And I can assure you… there were no dark circles under my eyes that day!” Curtis wore a custom suit from The Cloakroom in Brisbane. The groomsmen suits were custom made Harry’s Suits, an online company. “We took a gamble, but they turned out perfectly. Mum made the bow ties too!” The flowers were from Pink Moss Flowers by the wonderful Christina: “That flower crown was to die for! OH MY GOSH! The orchid was grown in her garden.” Cake This created a beautiful red velvet and coconut cake. “It was HUGE! We were eating leftovers for weeks!” Musician Steve Rockman rocked!” While the bridal party had photos, Steve played acoustic guitar and the guests enjoyed drinks, nibbles and freshly shucked oysters on the deck. After dinner the party started and he played requests. “The dance floor went off. There was even table top dancing by me… very classy of course!” “We danced to ‘Strangers in the Night’ by Frank Sinatra. We love a bit of Franky… who doesn’t? The song explains how we met and how we were inseparable ever since that night.” “After the ceremony we had a fresh, drinking coconut bar. This was supplied by Casey from Beach Harvest. We highly recommend it! They were also the perfect photo prop in amongst the palm trees for our tropical glamour wedding.” Courtney never thought she would have a beach vibe wedding: “I always thought I wanted a 1920’s inspired wedding with champagne fountains and a carousel, a bit dramatic I know. But sitting at NuNu Restaurant the night after Curtis proposed, I turned to him and said: ‘this is the place’. I didn’t even look anywhere else. Our guests really got on board with the tropical glamour dress code. There were lots of bright coloured dresses and floral shirts. It was amazing to see the sea of colour while standing at the front of the chapel. Plus, I was able to incorporate two of my favourite things… flamingos and coconuts!”

O NTREN D BR I DA L O N LI N E - SU M M E R / AU T U M N 2 018

Courtney says: “I’ve always been one to have my own fashion/style. But I have to take advantage of my amazing mother as she sews me outfits for whatever occasion I may have on. I just wanted everything to be simple. I didn’t want to spend a fortune on table pieces and decorations. The palm trees and festoon lighting were perfect and didn’t need anything else added. For the tables, I just went with a simple touch of coconuts with flowers to hold the table numbers and they looked so cute.” “We didn’t get a chance to have a ‘real’ honeymoon. Curtis had to get back to France to start rugby training again for the new season. I stayed in Brisbane for a couple more weeks before making my way back to France. Curtis did surprise Penelope and I with a weekend away at the beautiful Halcyon House in Cabarita. It was, I guess, a pre-honeymoon. I have always wanted to go, and it was just as I imagined. Hopefully we get to have a few more trips to Halcyon in the coming years.”

Newlywed advice from Courtney and Curtis: “Just take it all in and go with the flow. It all goes far too quickly. Enjoy the lead up, enjoy the day and enjoy the time together after, because before you know it, it’s all over. Also take a moment in the night to step away from the party and look back on everyone having the best time together. We shared a romantic moment on the beach together while the fireworks went off. We were able to look back on the restaurant and see all our loved ones together celebrating. It was magical.” Courtney’s Highlights: “Where do I start? It was certainly an emotional day. It is the strangest of feelings, all mixed together… It’s the day that every girl has dreamt of. The look on my sisters’ and parents’ faces when I came out of the room in my wedding dress was priceless. I felt incredible. Waiting outside the chapel before walking down the aisle was also breathtaking… literally! Dad held my hand and made me feel very supported. I needed it… not only were my shoes incredibly high (and I hadn’t worn heels in yonks) but I was shaking with nerves and excitement. Maybe dad was too, but he never let on. Being announced as ‘Mr & Mrs Browning’ was pretty special too… It was so cool to hear everyone cheering for us. Our little family was signed and sealed! Which meant I now have the same last name as our daughter, Penelope.” Curtis’ Highlights: “Definitely seeing Courtney walk down the aisle. She looked absolutely breathtaking. I was really nervous standing up there waiting for her. You know it’s all going to be ok, but standing up there with all eyes on you for a good 20 minutes felt like an eternity! Tracey, Courtney’s mother walked down first with our beautiful daughter, Penelope and all my nerves left. I was overwhelmed with happiness and emotion. Seeing the girls follow them down was incredible too, all building up to seeing my beautiful bride, which was definitely the highlight.”

ee

Courtney and Curtis also had what they describe as: “The best recovery day! Kickstarted with an amazing shared brunch at Portofino. We had the entire restaurant to ourselves and they set up two gorgeous long tables with white tablecloths and floral centrepieces. The food was fabulous and the coffee was definitely needed! We had arranged for coaches to transport everyone that afternoon from Palm Cove to Cairns Marina for a sunset cruise. Lots of cocktails and plenty of good tunes! The cruise sailed for about two and a half hours, before returning to our transport and back to Palm Cove. A kick on followed at Jack and Shannan’s on the Esplanade in Palm Cove… if you ever go there remember to ask for a Snickers Shot! Yummmmmm!”

According to national youth organisation, HEADSPACE, 75% of all mental health issues emerge before the age of 25. In fact, 1 in 4 young people aged between 12-25 years old have experienced a mental health issue in the last 12 months – a higher prevalence than any other age group in Australia. With suicide considered the leading cause of death in young people, the need for early intervention and holistic support is paramount. Committed to providing the youth of Australia with the resources and support they need, professional hair detangling brand, DESSARTA, has partnered with HEADSPACE to raise awareness and funds to assist in the development of mental, physical, vocational and substance-related support programs. To recognise the collaboration, has released an exclusive range of limited edition detangling brushes where $5 from every brush sold is donated to HEADSPACE. Titled ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE, the colourful print pays homage to the flamboyant flower power era of the 60’s and 70’s and celebrates the promotion of love, peace, equality and freedom. Available in the maxi - ideal for thicker hair; original - best for normal or thin hair; and mini - suitable for travel and children; the ergonomic brush moulds to the contours of the user’s hand for effortless brushing and unlike its competitors, detangles knots, even 24-hour ones, using innovative triple length bristles made from a break-resistant gel.

Bree-anne Veling & Ashley Condon 27 May 2017 Photography: WE ARE TWINE Our Love Story... “We met at the Brisbane Oktoberfest RNA Showgrounds on 18 October 2013 - on the dance floor. Ash proposed at South Bank on 23 December 2015. After a normal date-night, consisting of dinner and drinks, we went for a walk eating icecream and he got down on one knee in the Epicurious gardens to pop the question. He proposed with an interim ring so we could design one together which he had custom made by the jeweller.

“My bridesmaids were my four closest friends, who were with me every step of the way. Velbella in Brisbane created beautiful hair and makeup bridal looks for all of us. I wanted all of their individual styles to shine. They were given a colour palette range of blush/ champagne and choose their own dresses. It worked perfectly!”

“Flower Heart Designs kept the flowers for my bouquet simple, with textured white flowers, loose greenery and tendrils. A delicate pendant and brooch from my Oma and Grandma was also pinned on for sentimental reasons. The girls had pops of peach and pastel tones to complement their dresses. The soft colours flowed into the ceremony arbour and reception centrepieces.”

“We had our ceremony and reception at Bundaleer Rainforest Gardens with 94 guests at the Waterfall Deck. We wanted to ensure we had a beautiful outdoor greenery setting and were fortunate to have my cousin, from Inner Circle Ceremonies on the Gold Coast, marry us in a heartfelt ceremony. This was followed by canapes and champagne on the outdoor deck with yard games for guests and young ones. The reception was held at the same venue in the Treetops Room in an intimate banquet style setting. It was important to us that our ceremony and reception was at the one location so that once our guests arrived they could relax and enjoy the day and not have to travel between venues. The banquet also helped with the relax vibe and encouraged our family and friends to share our first family style meal together. What was the highlight of the day?” OUR HIGHLIGHT: “The indescribable excitement you feel just before walking down the aisle. The music starts and the nerves fade away as soon as you lock eyes with each other. Although all eyes are on you, there is still this moment where it just becomes the two of you.”

“I found my dream gown at Made with Love Bridal on the Gold Coast... the moment I tried it on, I knew it was the one for me and matched everything I was looking for. The soft, delicate lace, thin straps and exposed back were just stunning! Although it was figure-hugging, it was so comfortable.

“The Groom chose his three mates from basketball and a brother to stand beside him. The groom was dapper in his custom-made navy suit from Institchu, crisp white shirt and bowtie. As he and a number of his groomsmen are definitely not off-the-rack guys, we got custom made for all. The boys had theirs made on the back of a bucks trip to Thailand by RK Fashions, Phuket. They all wore superhero cufflinks unique to their personalities.

“As it was about the location for us, we wanted to keep the greenery and scenery at the forefront. Our style was to match the outdoor feel and intimacy by keeping it simple and using lighting but also adding some personal touches with handmade nametags. Our cake was created by Cake Ninja and served as dessert... so it had to be a big one! With over 6kg of chocolate, it was a three-tier double-layered chocolate cake with a white ganache rustic finish. It was kept simple with flower cake toppers and was made by my beautiful and talented cousin. Video Production was by Incolour Productions. The seating chart was created by KB Lettering and invites by Paperless Post.”

“We wanted the dance floor to be one of the main focuses so we hired a DJ to play our favourite songs and to adjust to the vibe of the guests throughout the reception. We also had some percussion instruments available which the guests seemed to enthusiastically enjoy! Our first dance was to All of Me by John Legend. We chose this song one night in bed when we were running through songs together. It is a beautiful song and something we both could see us dancing to. We took lessons leading up to the day, which I highly recommend as all eyes are definitely on you! It was a fun and intimate thing to do together and built our confidence for the day. Entertainment was provided by Sheila Finke, Byron Bay.”

THE HONEYMOON “It was easy for us to decide what we should do on our honeymoon... go to Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany since this is were it all began for us in Brisbane... but this time do the real thing! We ended up spending three weeks in Europe exploring the magnificent scenery and driving through the Swiss Alps in Springtime. The adventure was wrapped up with a Buddymoon... meeting friends in Munich to celebrate Oktoberfest before coming back home.” OUR ADVICE: “Each wedding is unique as it is fitting to the couple’s style. We made sure we stuck to what was important to us and that was the people we had sharing our magical day - our family and friends. We wanted to ensure once they got there, it was easy for them to just relax, enjoy and have fun. Trust your vendors... I was fortunate enough to have family in the industry and I trusted their advice and referrals which meant I could relax, enjoy and soak in the day.” Bree-anne & Ashley

LOCAL JEWELLER CREATES WORLD’S RAREST STRAND OF PEARLS World renowned Brisbane jeweller, Margot McKinney, is the proud and passionate designer of what is believed to be the world’s rarest strand of South Sea Pearls, valued at approximately $3.8 million. The strand was a key feature of Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival 2017 accentuating a bridal gown designed by bespoke Brisbane couturier, Paul Hunt. McKinney, a fourth-generation jeweller and internationally recognised precious gem designer, has very aptly named this extraordinarily rare and lustrous piece,

Once in a Blue Moon...

“It could take up to another 10 years for a strand of such high quality and consistency to be produced,” says McKinney. “These are perfectly round, beautifully graded and have spectacular natural colour and lustre.” The strand comprises 26 pearls of 18-21mm in diameter; a size that is extremely rare and which can only be produced in pristine Australian waters. These particular pearls were grown in East Arnhem Land by fifth-generation pearler and long-time friend of McKinney, Aji Ellies.

FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE

Top Tips to Help Protect Your Big Day Abroad

Australian couples are increasingly bucking tradition in favour of a wedding with an exotic back drop and a reasonable price tag. And given the average wedding now costs more than $65,000, this is no surprise. Claudio Saita, Deputy CEO and Executive Director in Australia for Tokio Marine, underwriters for award-winning World2Cover travel insurance, warns that some of the most precious items are often inadvertently left at risk when planning a wedding abroad. “Twenty eight per cent of brides spend over $2,500 on the all-important wedding dress2, but when travelling, most luggage is only covered up to the value of $1,000 per item – leaving a big shortfall should anything happen during the trip.” For anyone planning to get hitched overseas, the team at World2Cover have provided 6 TOP TIPS top tips to ensure their dream day doesn’t turn into a disaster: THE RINGS – The good news... the rings can be entrusted to the Maid of Honour or Best Man as they do not have to stay with the insurance policy holder to be protected. However, check your cover prior to departure as there could be exclusions if they are left in checked luggage or unattended in a vehicle. THE DRESS – If you don’t want to let it out of your sight, you can transport the dress as carry-on luggage. However, being a larger item, you will likely be asked to store it in an overhead compartment during take-off and landing. Other options include shipping it beforehand or even buying the dress its own seat on the plane! THE DESTINATION – If you’re planning to go to an exotic location, add a reminder in the SAVE THE DATE for guests to check with their doctor about any required immunisations. How long you’re going for and the season you’re travelling can also affect which vaccinations you need, so the more detail you can provide the better. THE FOOD – Food-borne illness is a major cause of sickness overseas. While buffet service is popular at weddings, leaving food in the open for long periods can increase the chances of disease-causing bacteria and viruses. Help evade any unwanted tummy bugs by avoiding seafood dishes and providing guests with hand sanitiser. CANCELLATIONS – Flight cancellations can and do happen. This could impact on your venue, caterers, celebrant and more, if you can’t get to the altar in time. Check travel news sites before you book and prior to departure as well, as your dream destination could be flagged as a DO NOT TRAVEL ZONE at little to no notice. If you purchase travel insurance as soon as you have booked, this won’t be an issue as you are covered for cancellations and if the destination becomes an off-limits area*. HONEYMOON PLANS – Whether you’re planning to relax by the pool or fill your days with adventures like scuba-diving or cruising, after saying I DO, purchase an insurance policy that covers your entire trip – from the day you leave to the day you arrive home, including all the activities inbetween. “More and more Aussies are heading off-shore to popular beachside destinations such as Bali, Thailand and Fiji, as it is predicted they can save up to three times what they would pay for a wedding at home. Of course, total costs can vary depending on the destination and number of guests, but savvy couples can opt to reinvest any extra cash into other items – from the rings to unique honeymoon experiences, which will stay with them long after they return home,” Mr Saita concluded. For more information on the coverage options from World2Cover, visit www.world2cover.com.au. *Limits, conditions and exclusions apply. Please read the PDS and full policy to ensure the cover is right for your circumstances.

Ceremony: Chelsea Beach Reception: Chelsea Yacht Club Photographer: Darin Collison “Darin is awesome.” Bridal Dress: Rue De Seine “I had already found a dress when I was on a trip in Queensland, but I wanted my mother in law and my bridesmaids to come to a dress fitting so I arranged one in Melbourne. When I came out of the change room wearing my dress, everyone cried so I thought, I guess this is the one.” Hair & Makeup: Make Up With Me THE PROPOSAL “Pat recreated our first date down to the car he was driving at the time. Funnily enough we had never been back to the same restaurant that we went to for our first date. He proposed on the pier where we had gone for a walk after our first date. You would think that I would have clued on to what was happening but it took me by complete surprise!” YOUR WEDDING STYLE “Fairly relaxed, kind of Boho I guess, with LOTS of fairy lights. It was a team effort. My mother sewed so many white cones for our white paper decoration - it took nearly a year to make! My mother-in-law made the delicious take homes. My dad made the frames that held all our place cards. Quite a few other bits and pieces were created in some crafter-noon sessions with my bridesmaids. A lot has been re-used at other weddings since which is nice.” HIGHLIGHT Jessica: “Locking eyes with Pat as I walked down the aisle.” NEWLYWED ADVICE “Have fun.”
