LAUREN RODATO AND ALICE GEE MET PLAYING BASKETBALL FOR WEST ADELAIDE BEARCATS IN U21’S IN 2009. “WE PLAYED IN A TEAM TOGETHER AND WERE FRIENDS FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS BEFORE WE GOT TOGETHER IN 2012.”
On 12 October 2018, Alice planned a weekend away at Lauren’s favourite place in the world - her family vineyard in McLaren Vale. Alice left a note on the kitchen table and asked Lauren to come inside. The note read, “Lauren, I’ve gone for a stroll, wait for my call and meet me in the vineyards. Stay inside until then. Love you, Alice xx” Alice grabbed a bag she had hidden, sprinted out the door and into the vineyards searching for the perfect spot. She set up a rug, cushions, music and a bottle of wine. When she finally got the call, Lauren walked outside to search the vineyards for Alice who was waiting down a row amongst the old Grenache vines. Pinned along the vines were 10 photos of Lauren with a poem on the back of each photo describing something Alice loved about Lauren. At this point Lauren was a blubbering mess! Music was playing, the sun was setting, it was truly perfect. Alice got down on one knee and asked Lauren to be her wife. It was the most magical moment.
“Our advice to other couples planning their wedding is if you have an idea of what you want, then stick with it! A lot of people will bring you ideas (both good and bad) but the decisions rest with you guys, so embrace all of them but stick with what you want! On the day of the wedding, allocate someone to be your decision maker. That way if anyone from the venue, other services or guests have questions, they don’t have to ask you! Don’t sweat the small stuff! Most of the time it’s not going to matter and no one will notice but you. Most importantly, make sure you take a moment to really enjoy what’s happening. The ceremony, for me, went so fast I wished we could have done it again and again just so I had more time to look at the flowers, look at the guests and listen to what was actually being said. I really did try but it is so hard (in the best way)! We spent our honeymoon in Palm Cove, Far North Qld.”
“The staff at Serafino’s were great to us and very accommodating to our requests and needs. Shout out to Michelle Wiley for coordinating the events on the day and for all the time and work she put in behind the scenes to make our day extra special. We loved our flowers from the Wild Flower Company. We don’t know anything about flowers but after one meeting with Kate, she totally understood what we were going for and absolutely nailed it on the day. Special thanks for her efforts in putting everything together as some stock was destroyed in the horrific fires that burned through much of the east coast and the Adelaide Hills. We were so impressed by the two incredible women and musicians Cerys and Claudia who performed our ceremony music. These girls are young but my goodness are they talented. Our celebrant Lucy Short was so lovely from the moment we met. The ceremony was genuine, meaningful and felt so special, she nailed it! Finally, a big shout out to all the staff at M&Co, especially Mandy and Michelle for doing an amazing job with not only our hair and makeup but also the hair and makeup of our entire bridal party.”
“THE THEME WAS BOHO/RUSTIC. OUR WEDDING DAY HIGHLIGHTS WERE LITERALLY EVERYTHING! BUT IF WE HAD TO PICK ONE THING THAT STOOD OUT TO BOTH OF US, IT WOULD BE THE CEREMONY. IT WAS EMOTIONAL, FUN, EXHILARATING AND JUST HOW WE IMAGINED IT WOULD BE.”

“OUR CEREMONY WAS HELD IN WESLEY CHURCH, PERTH CITY. WE WERE THE THIRD GENERATION OF DEAN’S FAMILY TO BE MARRIED THERE.”
Dean Langridge and Dylan Van Der Walt met in 2010 at a festival called ‘Summerdayz’ in Perth through mutual friends. “We were introduced, got talking, and ended up spending the rest of the day together. We started going on dates from that day. The moment we began setting joint goals and planning for our future was when we stopped and realised things were getting serious. Buying a house with someone for example two years later, is a pretty big statement of both a financial and emotional investment.”
“I (Dylan) decided I would propose... after I got sick of waiting for Dean to do it! So, I went out and bought two rings (because I need one too!) and planned to propose to Dean during a romantic camping trip. Needless to say, the events that followed were less than ideal. We were kicked out of the original camping spot for having dogs. Dean had the ‘man flu’ and the stress of a proposal put me on edge – so Dean proceeded to continually ask throughout the day, “Why are you being so sensitive today?”. We finally arrived at a beautiful lakefront camping spot, got a fire going, and as the sun was going down I got the ring and walked Dean to the lakefront. He was confused by why I was being so serious about having to watch the sun set, before I got down on one knee. When he saw the ring, the whole day made sense. I proposed and his words were, ‘Of course, Yes!’. Following that we thought we would celebrate with a drink. Typical of me, I forgot to buy champagne or bring glasses. We drove to the nearest bottle shop in the small country town which was three hours south-west of WA and asked if they sold champagne. Confused, the shop owner pointed us to the fridge where there was nothing available that was sparkling. We ended up purchasing the most expensive bottle of wine we could find at a modest price of $18 and drank it out of tin camping cups. I love this story because it’s just so typically ‘us’. It’s not the perfect proposal and not everything went to plan, but it was organic and made us laugh, just like the day we met.”
“Our wedding day highlights were saying our vows, the wedding speeches and of course the reception! In general though, the whole day was a highlight. We could feel the overwhelming unconditional love from both families. Our advice to other couples planning their wedding is to start early so you can relax and just enjoy the day when it comes around. Our honeymoon is booked for Greece and Italy, however is currently on hold due to COVID-19.�

Bebeah Love Fest The team at Days Like These Events & Photography were struck down with a little bit (or a lot) of cabin fever thanks to the pandemic that saw the wedding industry, like many others, literally come to a halt. They found themselves craving creativity during this idle time and thought there would be no better way to reinvigorate the wedding industry than to host a styled shoot and networking event for the suppliers at the stunning Bebeah Farm in NSW. From this concept, the inaugural two day ‘Bebeah Love Fest’ was born, pieced together by 35 of the best wedding suppliers from all over Australia. This was not just a working weekend; it was a memorable and exciting couple of days to showcase each business while making lifelong industry friends.

“It was late afternoon when we arrived at Shorncliffe Pier. The sun began to set and I thought the day could not have been more perfect. With COVID-19 causing everything to close and being unsure of how bad things were going to get, it made me so much more certain of what I was about to do. We walked to the end of the pier and I could see the beautiful setting arranged by Memorable Memories. Bri was completely unaware of what was happening. She went to walk past and I had to stop her and pull her back. I said, ‘This is for us’ and she replied, ‘What?’. Confused and unaware, I began with: ‘I know there are a lot of things going on in the world that I am unsure about and what’s going to happen but what I do know is that I have never been more sure about spending the rest of my life with you’. Then I got down on one knee and asked the woman of my dreams to ‘Marry Me’. Kate Reid met Simone Baker at work at a casual job while Kate was still in late high school and Simone was in her first year of university. “I guess we just always knew we would get married one day. We had been together for 19 years by the time Australia achieved marriage equality so it was really time! I came home from work one day to find Simone on the laptop with spreadsheets and stuff everywhere and asked what she was doing. Her response was, planning a wedding’, to which I asked, ‘whose?’ It turned out it was ours!”
“We had seen some photos of Gracelands online and loved the vibe of the place. We wanted a relaxed, intimate feel with great food and wine to be shared among our closest friends and family. It truly was the most magical day.” “Our highlights were all of it! The amount of love that filled the space all day. Standing up and declaring our love for each other in the most beautiful setting was incredible. Seeing all our closest family and friends sharing beautiful food and drinks together.” “Our wedding night was spent at Sticky Fig Retreat in Matcham. We didn’t have a honeymoon, partly in thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and partly because we have 2 children and lots going on with them. We had planned to get away in May 2020 to celebrate Simone’s birthday and a honeymoon but that has been squashed by COVID-19 also. Maybe later in the year!”

Kate Bonanno and Steph Charge met in 2013 through a mutual friend. “Steph had just turned 18 and was still figuring herself out. I had moved out of home two years before to find a more accepting place in the world and was still looking. When I met Steph, I knew I had met the girl that I wanted to marry but it took her a little bit longer to cotton on. For a little while we settled on being friends, or so she thought. On one of our early ‘friend dates’, I picked her up and we went to a theme park at night. I hated both heights and the dark, so this was my idea of hell, but I knew Steph wanted to go so badly. I put on a brave face and bought the tickets. She loved every second of it and I loved every second with her.” “SOMETHING CHANGED THAT NIGHT. AFTER WEEKS OF TELLING ME WE SHOULD JUST BE FRIENDS, ON THE WAY HOME, SHE KISSED ME.”
“After a few years of hounding Steph with the question, ‘Will you marry me?’, she finally said ‘yes’ one night... sort of! I had planned to take her up to a restaurant at the lookout that we loved and to propose on the grassy area where we had spent so many nights sitting and looking at the beautiful city that we live in together. When the moment finally came, I chickened out. I had asked her playfully at least 100 times, knowing that she wouldn’t think it meant anything. But this time it did. I had the ring in my pocket and had been checking on it all night to make sure it was still there. At this point she already knew my plan, and on the way home turned to me and asked, ‘So will you marry me?’.”
“Planning our wedding didn’t take much after we’d found the venue. Steph fell in love with Hillstone the second she walked in. Aside from the stunning views over the golf course, the classic feel of the place and the million fairy lights set up around the place, the team at Hillstone were relaxed, organised and down to earth. Scott Palazzi met Keith Russell through mutual friends one night at The Beat in Fortitude Valley. “Our paths crossed again five years later when Keith contacted my flatmate to catch up with her, not knowing I lived there. We’ve been inseparable ever since. The proposal was probably not the most romantic thing! We were talking about jewellery and Keith has a lovely gold and diamond ring that his father bought for him before he passed away. One day Keith suggested we should buy a ring for me, to which my reply was, ‘I’m only getting one if it’s an engagement ring’ and that was that!”
“Our wedding theme was Modern Country with white and gold accents. We made our own wedding favours which were 110 jars of mustard pickles (Keith’s specialty). Our advice to anyone planning a wedding is that it’s easier said than done, but try not to stress over the small stuff. It will all come together in the end, but whatever you do, don’t forget the table numbers! We reversed the usual and had our honeymoon the year before the wedding. We went to England, Scotland, France and Spain and it was the best trip we’ve ever been on.”

Deb and Jess met online. “Isn’t that where all the best ones start? It was an instant attraction and connection. As they say: ‘When you know, you know’. We were lucky enough to have two proposals!” Deb proposed to Jess while holidaying in Victoria to celebrate her finishing her last-ever doctor exam and buying their first home. They stayed in a delightful little stone cottage along the Great Ocean Road. Deb hid the ring in the firewood hoping Jess would find it and it would be a super-romantic moment, but she didn’t see it! Deb told her to put more wood on the fire and when Jess did this, she was a millisecond from throwing the ring into the fire! They had a laugh about it, in their usual style. Little Master N gave Jess a matching sapphire necklace and earrings and asked her to be his mum. The little man came as a bonus package to Jess after falling in love with Deb. Some months later, Jess hid the ring under the bed and Deb found it whilst vacuuming and continued cleaning with it on her hand! Because Deb isn’t very good at keeping secrets, she told Jess she had found it and Jess presented it to her properly that evening.
“There were so many highlights but it was more the kindness of people in the leadup. Becoming married while the rest of the world was ‘on hold’ was very special. Also, the rawness of the occasion because we decided to bring the date forward (and to shrink the guest list from potentially 150 to 5) because we realised what truly mattered. We forged precious friendships with our three vendors. Australia Post lost our wedding rings so the jeweller was kind enough to rush a second lot in time for the wedding, free of charge. The hens night over Zoom the night before the wedding was different and not what was originally planned, but beautiful all the same. Another highlight was having our son approved by the authorities to be in attendance. He played a big part in our day and we couldn’t imagine it any other way. We had family and friends watching the ceremony via Zoom from the UK, South Africa and LA. We spent a few hours getting photos as the pink sunset washed over the horizon, which was pretty spectacular.”
The theme was Bohemian/Rustic/Farmhouse. Deb spent weeks DIY styling the celebration. She is very clever on the power tools! As everyone was in lockdown, and Jess was working long hours on the frontline, there was little support. Many of the DIY touches were small surprises for Jess on the day. Their beloved neighbours (John and Maree) let the photographer, Danielle scout their paddock for the photoshoot. John and Maree followed the girls around (at a Covid-safe distance) with water bottles to ensure they stayed hydrated. John also drove the tractor out to use for some great photos. “Our advice for other couples planning their wedding is to really listen to what your hearts want and do that!”

Industrial LUXE meets RUSTIC The inspiration for this styled shoot was a copper pipe candle holder. The bold colour scheme was inspired by the white canvas with splashes of teal at the Luna Event Space. The perfect combination of teal and copper in a playful mix with white flowers to soften and bring elegance. A collaborative effort from some very talented suppliers brought all of the elements together to create a unique, fun tablescape. Luke and Simone wore casual yet elegant outfits to express the playfulness of the occasion.

ALEXANDRA (ALEX) RUNGIE AND JAY (MARJEAN) VAN BAALEN HELD THEIR CEREMONY AND RECEPTION AT ‘FORBES HILL’, THE RUNGIE FAMILY 10 ACRE PROPERTY IN ALDGATE, ADELAIDE HILLS.
Alex was new to Mount Isa after returning from deployment in Iraq with the Australian Army and accepting a nursing contract at the Mount Isa Hospital. After six weeks of not getting to know many people, her best friend, Benita told her it was time to get out of the nursing quarters and visit the town. Alex took herself to a local bar called The Buffs. She had been there when she first arrived in town and had noticed an interesting woman working behind the bar. As Alex walked up to the bar the woman she had noticed weeks earlier was serving and her name was Jay. As the night wore on, Alex built up the nerve to give Jay her number (some liquid courage was involved). It took Jay two weeks to pluck up the courage to send Alex a message. Their date started with beer and the longest game of pool in history at The Irish Club. Then Jay took Alex to her favourite place in Mount Isa, the Civic Centre amphitheatre steps, where they talked for hours. They went back to the bar and danced the night away, both realising they had met someone special! In the weeks that followed Alex and Jay got to know each other and their fondness for each other grew. Alex was due to leave at the end of her contract but in a brilliant turn of favour, a permanent job came up at the hospital and she threw her hat in the ring. She got the job the same day and as she knocked off at 3am in the morning, Jay was waiting outside the hospital doors to congratulate her.
When Alex was on her second deployment with the Australian Army in Iraq, for her recreational leave the couple went for a holiday to Sri Lanka. While there, they bought a beautiful yellow sapphire so that, one day, Jay would make it into a ring and propose to Alex. While deployed, Alex’s father became unwell. She made the decision she wasn’t going to wait around for a ring to be made and Jay to propose. Alex made the decision that it was going to happen as soon as she got back to Australia and bought a ring. Alex flew from Iraq to Adelaide to see her family and to spend time with her parents. Jay couldn’t be in Adelaide when Alex arrived but flew from their home in Mount Isa, Queensland, three days later. Alex requested that their family and close friends come to the airport on a Sunday evening to surprise Jay. Everyone agreed thinking that it would be a nice surprise not knowing it was going to be a proposal. Jay came up the ramp and saw everyone standing there except for Alex. The crowd parted and Alex, on one knee, asked the question. After the shock wave passed, Jay said ‘Yes’ with the cheers from friends, family and strangers filling the airport.
“Highlights were our vows to each other, Jay playing two songs to Alex on the acoustic guitar and having an absolute ball on the dance floor. Our advice for other couples planning their wedding is to remember why you are getting married. It’s about the love and commitment of two people for each other. Block out all the rest, it’s just white noise. Also, this kind of celebration costs money! But we wouldn’t have had it any other way. We unfortunately haven’t gone on a honeymoon yet but we will visit Jay’s family in South Africa once international travel has resumed after COVID-19.”

“Beki proposed to me on 7 September 2018 at a really nice, fancy glamping camp called Paperbark in Jervis Bay. She prepared the tent with rose petals everywhere, strawberries and candles. She gave me a bunch of cards that explained things she loved about me and with the last five cards she popped the question and gave me the ring. It was the sweetest thing ever and I cherish every single memory of that day.�
“The wedding theme was Romantic Rustic. It was very touching to see Beki coming down the aisle with her mum and we had a violin and cello playing in the background which was the biggest highlight of the day for me. For Beki, the ceremony by the river and saying our vows was the best part. We had to overcome so much to get to our wedding day which made it so very special to see we had made it.�
“Our advice to other couples planning their wedding is to have a wedding spreadsheet and folders for invoices and emails. Beki had these which was a great help as we had to plan the wedding from Sydney.�

An unsuspecting Nat Woods and Kay Metcalfe were introduced by a mutual friend running a gazebo at Fair Day, 2012. They both say that from the moment they met it was easy, as if they had known each other before and their inner selves knew that this was ‘it’. A connection formed that was so strong that even Kay disappearing for weeks without a word shortly afterwards, to witness the birth of their first grandchild, could not diminish the feeling of ‘rightness’. Kay often says that she waited 50 years to meet the right person and then suddenly she just appeared… in a park… under a tree… at Fair Day!
“After five years of love and life together, Kay decided it was time to cement their partnership in marriage. With much discussion of jewellery during the intervening years, she knew exactly the ring Nat admired and placed the order with their favourite jeweller mere days, if not minutes, after marriage equality was finally ratified. Kay hoped to surprise Nat with a Christmas proposal, surrounded by their children and closest family. Unfortunately the exact ring was hard to come by, being just as unique as Nat, and it looked like Kay’s dream proposal may have to be delayed! But somehow everything aligned, and the ring arrived just in time! So on Christmas Day 2017, Kay was able to get down on one knee in front of their loved ones and ask Nat to be her wife. (Nat did cotton on though that something was happening as their best thing, Manda, couldn’t contain the happy tears flowing when she saw what Kay was about to do and alarm bells rang for the innocent Nat – who does not understand happy tears!)” Shoshana, Curator of Love Stories

“WE MET ON 3 MARCH 2010 AND WERE MARRIED ON 3 MARCH 2020 (10 YEARS LATER). OUR WEDDING WAS INSPIRED BY OUR INCREDIBLE VENUE, PRESTON PEAK WINERY FUNCTION CENTRE, WHICH OVERLOOKS THE PLACE WE FIRST MET.”
Jordan (Jordii) Auld met Rebecca (Becca) Mataio while Becca was working for Jordii’s mum. “Becca was considering moving out of home and mum and I had a spare room in our house. We became friends and later realised our feelings were stronger. We both proposed! I proposed first, on a whim. It was New Year’s 2018 and we had just shared our first New Year’s kiss (8 years after we got together). We had always been in the company of family and didn’t want to make people feel uncomfortable (not because we’re a gay couple, just cause PDA isn’t big in our families). This year we did though. We’d had a pretty crappy 2017 and wanted something to be better about the next year of our life. So I proposed, no ring, no plan, no great big speech. Just a simple ‘Marry Me?’. Seven days later, after our rings came in, Becca took me down to the place we first met and told me we’d take some photos of her wearing her ring (she told me to wait for mine). She set up a video camera and we took a couple of practice snaps, right before she got down on one knee and asked me to be hers. Both moments equally perfect.”
“There were so many wedding highlights. The morning of our wedding we had both bridal parties, our parents and siblings all come to our house. We sat around eating beautiful breakfast grazing platters, drinking mimosas and opening presents. Both our dads made beautiful little speeches and our favourite tunes played in the background. It was the perfect, calm, intimate start to our day. Another highlight was the beautiful cultural aspects built into our wedding. Becca is NZ Maori and in the ultimate display of love and acceptance, her brothers and parents presented us both with a Maori korowai (a traditional Maori cloak made of feathers). Becca was presented hers in the morning and I got mine after the ceremony. We also had a traditional pōwhiri (welcoming) and haka at our reception entrance.”
“Our advice for other couples planning their wedding is to pick vendors that you love to spend time with and aren’t afraid to be intimate in front of. We chose girls who became incredible friends; berfore, during and after our wedding. Because we spent so much of our day with our photographer, videographer and makeup artist, we never once felt like we were missing out on time with our loved ones because we spent our whole day with some great friends. We would also recommend spending the day together (that sounds silly!) but at no point (other than getting ready) were we apart. Our day was truly OUR day. We made sure to stop and take in all of the important moments of the day. We took a moment post ceremony, before the reception, during the reception and on the dance floor to step back together and take it all in. Give people a chance to support you, love you and be genuinely proud with you and most people will surprise you. We were so certain we would encounter ‘haters’ or be dismissed or treated as different and we never were. We spent our honeymoon on Waiheke Island, New Zealand.”

Love and laughter filled the air for this romantic styled shoot in the rustic rooms of the historic Fort Lytton. Created to showcase the contrast of vintage furniture and beautiful flowers, the joy of balloons and celebrating marriage equality in Australia. Love is Love. The Beauty of Love. Serena and Monika were the perfect couple and shared a fun-filled day with a beautiful connection with plenty of laughter throughout the day. The set and flowers were beautifully created and styled by our talented photographer and floral stylist, Natasha Simpson from Dawn Photography. The ladies looked absolutely stunning with their three different looks of hair and makeup created by the talented Makeup by Stace. The breathtaking gowns by Darb Bridal and Goddess by Nature provided many ‘ahhh’ moments. The elegant custom-made jewellery and hairpieces by Redki Couture Jewellery completed the looks perfectly.

Loredana Costantino and Megan Campbell met at a long weekend event at the Factory Theatre, Marrickville. Meg was invited by some friends but they were a ‘no-show’. Trying to look busy at the bar, someone gave Meg a shove from the back and Loredana was there telling her, ‘people are pushing in front of you, it’s your turn to order’. Meg thought this was ‘pretty crazy-kind!’ They parted ways but ended up running into each other again on the dance floor. One thing led to another and they hung out all night. Meg knew that Loredana would require a ‘special’ marriage proposal that needed to be very personal. It had to be romantic, despite what Loredana would have everyone think. On a rainy Sunday morning, Meg snuck out super early to drive to Balmain to get Loredana’s favourite croissant from Labancz Patisserie-Boulangerie. On her return, she set up a ghetto blaster in her neighbour’s garden, which can be seen from their kitchen window. She rang Loredana and asked her to get up and feed their cat. Loredana got up, heard their favourite song playing and thought it was odd, but didn’t think to look out the window to see where the music was coming from. She fed Ruth and went back to bed. Meanwhile, Meg was still standing outside in the pouring rain. She turned the music up embarrassingly loud and Loredana finally came to the kitchen window, saw Meg out there and immediately knew what was up. When Meg passed her a croissant (with a ring sticking out of the top) through the kitchen window, the answer was, ‘Yes’ followed by, ‘Can we eat breakfast now?’.
“Our wedding theme was Rustic Cocktail. What seemed at first like things going ‘wrong’ actually turned into some of our most beautiful wedding moments. Even though all our weather apps said ‘clear’, the steady drizzle said otherwise. We had to move our ceremony inside, leading to a lot of getting ready stress, in turn leading to us being an hour late! In the chaos, all our family and friends at the hotel left for the venue (so they wouldn’t be late), leaving the two of us stranded for a lift to our own wedding. Luckily both our parents came to the rescue, doubling back to pick us up. This meant that we inadvertently turned up and walked in with our parents, siblings and nonna to an expectant, cheering room full of our nearest and dearest. We hadn’t planned a traditional walk down the aisle for either of us, but this little twist turned into a gorgeous moment we hadn’t anticipated. The feeling of love and joy in the room was overwhelming. We had a pre-wedding honeymoon in Italy in 2019.”

“Our advice to anyone planning their day is to plan and organise the wedding your way, no matter how traditional or non-traditional you want, it’s your day. Be as organised as possible and stick to a schedule and budget, but understand that it won’t work out 100% and that’s OK. A lot of the things that went ‘wrong’ turned into our best moments. Try to delegate jobs and if you, like us, don’t have an event planner, put your best boss friend in charge on the day, someone who will make tough decisions (ours made the weather call for us). Meg wishes we’d organised a longer event - it truly flies by.”
