Holland
Your Portal to Offshore Wind Power Europe is the global leader in offshore wind energy, and is focused on the further expansion of the industry to achieve its climate goals. The North Sea is the most important location in the world for offshore wind farms, thanks to the beneficial wind conditions and relatively shallow waters. The Netherlands has a strategically advantageous geographic location: its seaports border all offshore wind farms in operation, under construction, or under development in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands itself. Renowned international companies in the supply chain recognize this natural competitive advantage and choose Dutch seaports as a high-quality and safe base from which to perform their offshore operations as costefficiently as possible. The Dutch government is strongly supportive of the offshore wind industry. You can be sure that the Dutch government, at all levels, as well as any Dutch partners involved, will facilitate your offshore wind energy ideas to the best of their ability.
Your Best Strategic Location
Stable Base for Business Growth
Conducive Innovation Environment
Dutch seaports form the most efficient connection between the most important European shipping routes and the vast hinterland via a dense, high-quality infrastructure. The Netherlands is the number one country in Europe in deep-sea shipping, and the largest transhipment point for deep-sea and short-sea shipping. As a result, Dutch ports outperform many other North Sea harbors because of the significant lower in- and outbound logistic costs.
The Dutch government sees offshore wind energy as a key driver of economic growth and innovation and supports this by offering attractive incentive schemes. The objectives of the Netherlands are: 1) to achieve a 40% cost reduction in offshore wind energy and, 2) to strengthen its leading position in offshore wind technology. This will increase opportunities for all parties in the wind energy supply chain.
Holland’s open innovation approach and well organized public-private partnerships offer a favorable environment for companies looking to accelerate business growth. Together with a mind-set of creativity, collaboration and reliability - and a top scientific sector Holland is able to guarantee the most important drivers in ‘innovation location‘ choices for foreign investors. Moreover, according to the World Economic Forum the Netherlands is rapidly harnessing new technologies for productivity improvements.
Your Competitive Advantages in the Netherlands: • Centrally located among the future European wind farms • Best logistics performance in Europe • World leading R&D position in offshore wind turbine technology • Lots of space for assembly activities in ports • Skilled and stable workforce • Collaborative offshore wind energy cluster • Flexible labor regulations and relations • Transparent, reliable and business friendly authorities • A competitive fiscal climate • Attractive incentive schemes

Holland & Offshore Wind: Where Your Business Accelerates The North Sea is the most popular location for offshore wind farms due to its favorable maritime conditions. More than 70% of existing (and planned) European offshore wind farms are located here, with an estimated growth in capacity to 90 GW (source: European Wind Energy Association). Attractive Incentive Schemes The Dutch government is committed to achieving EU climate goals, and has set a target of increasing the use of renewables to 16 % of total consumption by 2023. Offshore wind energy plays an important role in reaching that goal. The Dutch government wants to strengthen its top position in offshore wind, and is committed to supporting and stimulating innovation. Offshore wind energy is part of the Dutch Top Sector policy. Accelerating Business Growth Based on broad national consensus (Energy Agreement) the Netherlands strives to reduce costs for offshore wind energy by 40% in 2020.
Continuous innovation is key to achieving this. To lower the perceived risk for investors and facilitate easy market entry for these innovations the Dutch Top Consortium for Knowledge and Innovation Offshore Wind (TKI Wind op Zee) is developing public-private test and demonstration sites which offer a favorable environment for companies looking to accelerate business growth. Growth Opportunities The Dutch on- and offshore wind energy sector employs approximately 8.000 people (2012) and contributes 1.1 billion Euros to GDP. Fifty-nine percent of the total wind energy turnover of 3 billion Euros is
generated by offshore windpower. The sector estimates significant annual growth in employment. Growth opportunities include wind turbine design, wind turbine production, offshore maintenance and wind farm development and exploitation. Facts The Netherlands’ strategic central location provides a significant edge in serving the world’s largest consumer and industrial market, and does so cost effectively: • First place in EUROSTAT’s ranking of deepsea shipping • The largest volume of transhipment in deep-sea and short-sea shipping • First place in the DHL Global Connectedness Index 2012 • The Port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest seaport • Amsterdam Airport Schiphol named best Airport in Western Europe in 2014 • Fastest internet connection in Akamai’s ranking of Q4 2013 (EMEA-region)
