International Legal Studies AT ONU LAW

SMALL SCHOOL WITH A GLOBAL IMPACT Our international law program is designed to provide you with the training and exposure you need to practice law in the global context. Through our unique concurrent JD/LL.M. in Democratic Governance and Rule of Law, a wide range of courses and activities and the opportunity to study with public-minded young lawyers from around the world, you will receive an education in international legal, business and human rights topics.

JD/LL.M. IN DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE AND RULE OF LAW If you are motivated to work in promoting democracy, law reform and development around the world, then our concurrent JD and LL.M. in Democratic Governance and Rule of Law degrees are the ideal choice for you. Beginning your first year, you will take international law courses designed to give you exposure to the needs and demands of countries making the transition to democracy and the rule of law. Unique shared classes and activities enable you to learn alongside our international LL.M. students, who are preparing for public service in their home countries. During each summer term, we place you in an externship

to gain practical experience in the field and generate valuable international contacts. Your first placement will be in international development, law reform or human rights organizations in the United States, such as the World Bank, United Nations Development Programme, CARE USA, Transparency International, Save the Children, Free the Slaves or the Urban Institute. In your second year, you will work with international organizations or governments overseas. Externs most recently have worked in Kosovo, Georgia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. These experiences and contacts will provide you with professional opportunities in law and governance reform around the world.

TAKE NOTE ONU LAW IS NINTH IN THE NATION FOR PLACEMENT IN GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC INTEREST LEGAL JOBS, ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL LAW JOURNAL.

JD/LL.M. SUCCESSES 2013 SUMMER PLACEMENTS One of the most important aspects of Ohio Northern’s concurrent JD/LL.M. in Democratic Governance and Rule of Law program is the summer externship program. Last year, the concurrent students pursued an exciting variety of externships in the U.S. and abroad, learning first-hand about the challenges and opportunities for promoting justice around the world. Whether they are helping assess a human rights program in Laos, working on law reform in Baghdad, or fighting corruption in Kenya, concurrent students see the real-world applications of the knowledge they receive in their classes. Students identify their own opportunities for externships or work with the LL.M. faculty who guarantee a placement both summers.

JD/LL.M. TESTIMIONIAL In May 2011, I arrived in Kosovo to extern at a United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded business environment legal reform project implemented by a leading development company, Chemonics International. From the first day, I was engaged in practical application through analysis and staff support on a number of legal topics, including secured transactions, international trade, property, business organizations, data protection and administrative law. This hands-on application provided tangible experience that opened doors I hadn’t originally expected; by the end of my summer externship, the project manager offered me a long-term position on the project. I deferred my third year of law school and eagerly welcomed this opportunity. My responsibilities were expanded to include management and coordination of project activities across all components. From working with subcontractors and grantees to validating project results to observance of reporting requirements, I have gained valuable experience on a significant USAID project. The ONU JD/LL.M. program has been crucial to this success. Chris Hill, L-3
