Vision of the session In all my years of EYP, I have attended sessions where the delegates know what it means to be a part of the European Union and every day, to benefit from its freedoms and ideals. This session gives us the opportunity to share our experiences with delegates who come from a very different background. Here, we will be given the chance to gather in a country outside the EU’s borders and work with Turkish youth in debating the most pressing issues that the EU faces today. The theme of the session is “bridging gaps-sharing ideas-resolving conflict” and throughout the session, the participants will test their ability to live up to these statements. Bringing together young people from in and out of the EU will allow us to foster meaningful cultural exchange and encourage mutual appreciation of ideas and opinions.

“Changing the world is good for those who want their names in books. But being happy, that is for those who write their names in the lives of others, and hold the hearts of others as the treasure most dear.”

Our challenge, as officials, will be to create a comfortable environment for the participants to openly share their views. I firmly believe that it is only when we are able to freely express our ideas that we can truly appreciate other viewpoints. And it is only when you fully appreciate someone’s view that you can come to a meaningful conclusion.

For the first time, these delegates will experience what I consider to be the defining aspect of every EYP session – they will build friendships and establish connections that will stay in their lives for years to come. From my time in EYP, I have always put a strong focus on academic rigour and, although I will aim to ensure this does not falter here, it is my desire to really bring a feeling of togetherness as well as active and collaborative debate to the session.

Vision for the board

Vision for the chairs team

This session will provide the board with an experience like no other they will have had in their previous roles. It is often the convention that chairing a few times adequately prepares an EYPer to VP. This is something I fundamentally disagree with; I believe that vice-presiding requires a very different skillset to chairing. What I will aim to do in this session is to provide the board with what I believe to be the necessary preparation for outstanding session leadership.

This setup will allow for the pre-session work to be less time-consuming than a normal VPing experience. We are looking for a chairs team that is young, dynamic, and has a passion to learn. I strive to bring together a team that is united by a collective commitment to support each other throughout the session, as well as learn from one another. The session board will provide the chairs with all-round backing, and in addition to that, the chairs will be continuously encouraged to carry out mutual observations within the team, feeding back to fellow chairs and focusing not just on ensuring their own committee’s performance, but on contributing to a high standard at the session overall.

So what’s different? The vice-presidents at the session will not be chairing committees. There will be a strong focus on them preparing, leading and evaluating chairs’ training. Reflecting on my experiences as a vice-president at two international sessions, I learnt so much from not having a committee and being afforded the freedom, time and resources to analyse and perfect the leadership element of the role. I will use my international session experience, valuable reflections from the T4ET I attended, as well as my day-to-day practices as a classroom teacher to provide my board with a unique, challenging and eye-opening experience. Additionally, the session board will receive training led by an international session president who will fulfil the role of the session trainer.

Prior to the session, the chairs team will receive carefully planned training modules run by the session board; these will review the basics of chairing supplemented by specialised modules that focus on specific aspects of chairing and leadership. What does the role of a vice-president entail? • Help the president select and phrase four topics for their buddy group • Aid four chairs in the preparation of pre-session material • Work with the president and trainer to prepare, run and evaluate the chairs’ training

“To command is to serve; nothing more, nothing less.”

• Provide support to four chairs in their buddy group throughout the session • Be responsible for the resolution typing process for those four committees • Lead buddy group meetings • Observe chairs in their committees and provide feedback based on their observational notes • Provide the president with wacky new ideas to use at the session

The training will not conclude with the arrival of delegates – it will continue throughout the session. Yes, the chairs will have a fully packed schedule at the session and will undoubtedly face a demanding role; however, I guarantee that this will be a session that will broaden their horizons and truly enrich their experience as chairpersons and as young leaders. As president, I will have high expectations for my team; but at the same time, my team can expect a lot of attention and support from me. In the whirlwind of intense activities at the session, I will be there to remind my team to enjoy themselves, relish the cultural setting they find themselves in and take that all-important moment to appreciate the people surrounding them. Those who have worked with me in the past will know I love pulling little surprises out of my sleeve to make sure my chairs are truly rewarded for their hard work!

With around 150 delegates expected to attend the session in March, the 19th National Session of EYP Turkey will be a huge event to be a part of next year. With the support of an excellent organising team, we will have some extraordinary opportunities to make the session our own and show 150 first-time EYPers the best our organisation has to offer.

“Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care”

I sincerely hope that you will join me in Turkey in 2016. Warmest wishes, Vivek 19th NSC Vision

Dear EYPers, It is with great enthusiasm that we would like to officially introduce and invite all EYPers to the 19th National Selection Conference of EYP Turkey that will be held at our school Robert College between March 24-29th. And here is the story of why we believe that you should apply to our session at Robert College, a prestigious private high school where EYP Turkey was born. It was 1999 when a Robert College student organised the first conference in the EYP format in Turkey with the vision of providing young people a platform where they could speak freely on social and political issues. EYP Turkey started out as a youth club under the roof of Robert College and has come a long way since then. With the 1st Istanbul Youth Forum (IYF) organised by Robert College, EYP Turkey’s first steps were taken. Robert College not only organised the first 6 NSCs and 7 IYFs in Turkey, but also has been sending delegations to international sessions to represent EYP Turkey since 1999. Later, other schools also became eligible to host conferences and EYP further spread and developed in Turkey. Robert College sustained its active and effective participation in EYP until 2012. Due to some conflicts between the school administration and the RC EYP, the club was shut down. After a year, a group of dedicated EYPers (Berk Manav, Can Goksen and Deniz Saip) worked to reopen and revitalise it. As the first members and later board members of the new RC EYP club, we have helped and watched the new RC EYP raise from its ashes. As the head-organisers, we have worked really hard to regain school’s and EYP Turkey’s trust to host the 19th NSC at Robert College. With a dynamic and enthusiastic organising team consisting of experienced EYPers, we believe that we will regain Robert College’s reputation by hosting a session full of activities and at perfect venues at the heart of Istanbul.

Robert College Robert College of Istanbul is a private high school in Turkey. Founded in 1863, Robert College is the oldest American school still in existence in its original location outside the United States. Robert College is also where EYP Turkey’s first steps were taken and where first 6 NSCs and 7 IYFs (International Youth Forum) took place.

Hamam Peak Hotel Located in a unique location, in the heart of Istanbul, Peak Hotel is just walking distance from congress and business centers, historical and touristic destinations, entertainment centers, consulates and metro stations. The most popular and safest places of entertainment in Istanbul are just walking distance from The Peak Hotel. Istanbul nights are waiting for you with broad alternatives ranging from traditional entertainment to night clubs.

Hamam, also known as Turkish bath, is a traditional place where people go to cleanse and relax. The Turkish bath starts with relaxation in a room (known as the warm room) that is heated by a continuous flow of hot, dry air, allowing the bather to perspire freely. Bathers may then move to an even hotter room (known as the hot room) before they wash in cold water. After performing a full body wash and receiving a massage, bathers finally retire to the cooling-room for a period of relaxation.

Plateau Plateau, soccer field with an astonishing view of Istanbul, and gym are where we will do our teambuilding.

Our vision for the 19th National Selection Conference is to bridge the gap between Robert College EYP sessions by hosting the greatest NSC with most national and international participation in history of EYP Turkey. We kindly ask you to consider applying to Istanbul 2016 for an amazing time in a vivant city. Sincerely, Şule Kahraman & Mert Ege Açıkgöz
