I grew up hunting, fishing, and golfing in a small town in South Georgia called Thomasville. My hometown was the inspiration behind our Fall 2017 collection. Thomasville is the heart of the Red Hills Region. Named for its rolling hills of red clay soil, the area is comprised of around 300,000 acres in South Georgia and North Florida. The Red Hills are home to 64 endangered plant and animal species and the region is one of the largest contiguous pieces of privately held land in the United States. Many of these acres are still in the same families that came to Thomasville in the late 1800s and thankfully most are under conservation easement in order to protect both the land and the traditions that go along with it. Fragile plant species below join with towering Longleaf Pines above to create a breathtaking landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see. This is the natural habitat of the Bobwhite Quail, and some of the most notable families in American history have spent their winters chasing these birds around on horseback accompanied by mule drawn wagons. While quail is king, Thomasville is much more than prestigious hunting properties. We are lucky to have a thriving retail corridor along the original brick streets of downtown, and Glen Arven Country Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in America, founded in 1892. There are so many interesting stories about Thomasville. I have included some of my favorites in the pages to follow. I do hope you enjoy our Fall 2017 collection (and the stories that accompany it) because it means so very much to me. MAIN STREET VALUES Thomasville came to prominence in the late 1800s when it was home to three grand hotels, as well as massive privately held quail shooting plantations and winter cottages for the northern elite. In 1887, Harper’s Bazaar called Thomasville ‘the best winter resort on 3 continents’. The brick lined streets of downtown are still a vibrant shopping destination for locals and tourists alike. If you find yourself in the area be sure to check out our storefront at 115 North Broad Street, which at one time would have been housed in the historic Mitchell House Hotel (circa 1886).
